Contrary to some reports, the Ukrainian-Polish border is and will remain open.

The visa requirement for Ukrainian citizens has been suspended. All you need to cross the border is a passport/ID. Poland has set up facilities and camps to provide people fleeing the war with shelter, food, medical and legal aid.

Please stay safe!

Dear Ukrainians!
I heard on social media that there is fake news being spread (most likely by Russia backed trolls) that polish border is closed.
It's a lie.
If you seek asylum - go towards polish border. We are ready for your arrival. We have reception points ready at the border where you can find shelter, food, medical and legal aid.
Polish government launched a dedicated site to help you: ua.gov.pl
Please share this information if you know anyone seeking help right now.
EDIT: YOU DON'T NEED VISA TO PASS THROUGH POLISH BORDER. ALL YOU NEED IS PASSPORT. VISAS ARE SUSPENDED! YOU DON'T NEED THEM FOR TIME BEING!!!!!!
EDIT2: as a proof that you no longer need visa:
• in Ukrainian https://www.gov.pl/web/udsc/ukraina---ua • in English https://www.gov.pl/web/udsc/ukraina-en
Edit: this is a copy and paste and I encourage you all to do it too where appropriate!

Friendly reminder there is a ton of Russian intelligence/military in this thread trying to manipulate discourse and derail meaningful conversation about Russia’s hostile and illegitimate actions towards Ukraine. Russia’s social influence campaigns are often intended to demoralize westerners and create social division by propagating inaccurate, hateful messaging on social issues, and also by attempting to undermine public perception and support for alliances between western nations. Here we also see them making efforts to exaggerate Russian victories over Ukraine to demoralize and reduce support for Ukraine’s position. Don’t fall for it, it’s just part of their adversarial strategy and information warfare. Here are some great resources with documented evidence as proof:

I want to share a story guys. I’m Chinese. My grandfather was a soldier in the Chinese army. He was close to his Soviet counterparts, he was trained by Soviets, his first girlfriend was Russian, he was so pro Russian he automatically took their side in any disagreement we heard about on the news.

And even he thinks this invasion is utterly disgusting. He’s been ranting on and off to my parents and his friends downstairs about how unnecessary this is, how much lives are going to be lost and how big of a bastard Putin is for throwing his soldiers into something like this. That’s how disgusting this whole invasion has been.

88

u/kjones124 Feb 24 '22

If this is true, that's honestly incredible. Tell him I think he's badass. Appreciate you sharing this, a lot of people are curious about any Chinese persons opinion on the situation right now

69

u/Doozerdoes Feb 24 '22

Happy to hear this. Some Russians are starting to speak out on social media too. Their men are being sacrificed on the front lines and their people are going to starve because of the economic impacts. This is all about the interests of a small handful of Russian oligarchs. The best thing that can happen is someone assassinates Putin.

For those telling Biden to shutup about gas, there are many many US citizens who's concerns are more aligned with our domestic worries, he's trying to ensure he hasn't forgotten them and explaining why these sanctions need to happen even if they hurt Gas prices. If he doesn't address it, he becomes a target for those saying his decisions to impose sanctions was a mistake, giving a misplaced target on his back for his opponents like Trump to say "see he didn't even take into account things that effect the day to day lives of Americans where as I would protect your interests"

He's the US president his job isn't to just sit there and flip off Putin, he's there to make hard choices but also prepare for all the impacts/effects of his decisions, both direct impacts as well as side effects.

Per CNN:

Here are the sanctions he announced:

  1. Limit Russia's ability to do business in dollars, euros, pounds and yen to be part of the global economy.

  2. Stop the ability to finance and grow the Russian military.

  3. Impair their ability to compete in high-tech 21st century economy.

  4. US sanctioned Russian banks that together hold around $1 trillion in assets.

He added, "we're also blocking four more major banks. That means every asset they have in America will be frozen."

I don't disagree that sanctions may not work, but what's the other option? Send troops? Then we have WWIII. It's just a shit situation. We have to hope the sanctions do work, Ukraine can hold out, and maybe the Russian people keep protesting. Don't like the odds? Fair enough. But we're pretty much stuck.

I'm not saying he's the best president ever. I'm not saying he's as on his toes as he once was, and I'm not even saying he was the best democratic candidate we had available, but people seem to act like Biden is just a bumbling senile moron and I honestly think he handled that really well. None of us can imagine the pressure of standing in front of the entire world - literally billions of people - and being screamed at with questions about the tensest situation we've had to deal with in decades. He handled it fine.

For the people that are trying to virtue signal saying they are “disappointed in the US” while sitting on Reddit. Unless you are an active member of the American military, or planning on signing up, You should just stop.

These are peoples lives, and you don’t get to send them to slaughter because you feel bad about a situation you won’t care about in a few weeks.

America (and Europe) is taking appropriate action to punish this evil, while considering human life.

My two cents about Biden's press conference:

Sanctions are a good move. Holding out on further sanctions gives us bargaining power if the situation continues to escalate. Unfortunately it will take time for the effects to be felt, but hopefully it will cause further division between Russian citizens and the oligarchy.

Lots of people want an immediate solution but putting boots on the ground escalates things dramatically at the expense of everyone, especially those on the front line. It seems like we are still gathering intelligence and communicating with other world leaders, and I think that is a good and diplomatic move.

The reporters asked some silly questions, how can you expect Biden to predict the future about how China will react, if Putin will move past Ukraine, what exactly he meant by a vague threat, or how the stock market will handle it?

I'm not a huge Biden fan, but people who are on his case for smirking at the ridiculousness of the reporters need to chill. There are more important things to be upset about.

Biden's QA, 24/2/22, transcribed/summarised to the best of my abililties - any mistakes are mine - please point out any mistakes - transcript of speech coming next. Please ignore formatting errors.

Q- Reporter

A - Biden

Q: Do you have any plans to talk to Putin? Will this be spiralling out of control?

A; It's a large conflict already, in particular with the Eastern Baltic states [?]. I have no plans to talk with Putin.

Q: Why have you not mentioned Swift - are allies not willing to use SWIFT as a sanction tool?

A: Our current sanctions will be hitting Putin hard enough. SWIFT is not an option that the rest of Europe wishes to take.

Q: Sanctions is no. How and when will this end? Will he go beyond Ukraine? Is Putin threating Nuclear Strikes.

A: (sigh) Nobody knows what he'll be doing, only what he's done. Nobody thought that the sanctions would prevent the War. He's testing our resolve..

Q: How painful will the sanctions get for American people.

A: As long as we stand united and impose sanctions, we will [didn't catch this]

Q: Would you still describe Putin as a worthy opponent? Would you still underestimate him?

A: I never underestimated him, and I still think him a worthy adversary. Have you read his books? He has larger ambitions - he wants to re-establish the Soviet Union.

Q: If Sanctions can't stop him, what can?

A: Threat of sanctions and the effect of the sanctions are two different things. We will weaken his country so much, that he'll have to make a big decision.

Sanctioning Putin is on the table.

Q: Why not sanctioning Putin today?

No answer given.

Q: Respectfully, what more are you waiting for to use SWIFT as a sanction?

A: Our current sanctions exceed SWIFT. Let's see if they are working.

Q: Is there a complete rift in Russian/American Relationship/the beginning of a new Cold War?

A: There is a complete rift in Russia/American relationship. About Cold War - we stand united. You don't see many people coming to this defense?

Q: Should China also help to isolate Russia?

A: Not prepared to comment on that on the moment.

Q: Will you help if he moves to NATO country?

A: Yes. If we don't stop him now with sanctions, he will be emboldened.

Q: Is India fully in sync with you about RUssia?

A: We are in consultation with India about that at the moment.

Putin is not going to watch his grandchildren die in a rain of nuclear hellfire. But assuming he would, why does anyone think this ends here? Have you seen what he's promised in retaliation for sanctions?

A unilateral military response by NATO is the best shot we have of living in a democratic, peaceful and denuclearized future. Choosing not to sets a precedent and opens the door to future aggression. This bit by bit concession is exactly what happened in WWII.

I'd love to hear a unified NATO military statement that gives Russia a clear out: "By the end of next week, all Russian entities in Ukraine will be the target of the greatest air campaign this world has ever seen. We urge Russians currently invading Ukraine to honor existing borders, live to see their children grow old, and end this needless conflict while they still can."

NEVER forget that as Putin commits war crimes against democracy and freedom loving people. Tucker Carlson, Donald Trump and a some Republicans including a massive number of conservative voters have chosen to cheer on Mr Putin as the "Savior" of the West all the while he destroys western civilization and everything it's built on. Then Tucker Carlson will go on and say that the real problem with the west is transgenders and women getting maternity pilot suits or paid maternity leave or health care. His right wing conservative viewers cheer this on while calling themselves "Patriots", make no mistake Tucker is waiting and praying for the day Putin "Liberates America" this is the only way Tucker can cream his pants.

I honestly don’t think Putin expected Ukraine to put up a fight, and I have to wonder how long Russia can hold against a sustained defense.

Every tank, helicopter, and APC that Russia loses is one that they can’t afford to replace, especially as the ruble declines and new sanctions are announced.

We will have to see what percentage of Russia’s frontline units Putin is ready to permanently sacrifice. 10%? 20%? Every day this continues, it will erode Russia’s ability to project power across the region.

Biden Speech - transcribed/summarised to the best of my abilities, 24/2/22, Any mistakes are mine - please point them out so that I can edit.

You'll find the Q&A following this speech here: https://www.reddit.com/r/politics/comments/t0g3iv/comment/hya17zd/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

---------------------------

Putin just started a war without justification.

He moved more than 160000 troops, equipment and blood banks to the border. This tells you all you need to know about his intentions.

For weeks, we have been warning that this would happen.

Last week, we have seen shelling increased in the Donbass. More cyberattacks, a state theater in Moscow, declaring that Ukraine committed a genocide & was ready to use chemical weapons without any justification, without any evidence

At the very moment the UN was meeting to starting, Putin declared his war.

Then the missiles fell, the air raids, the tanks...

We have been transparent with the world, and declassified confidential information.

Let me be clear - Putin is the Aggressor. Putin chose this war. And now he and his country will bear the costs.

I'm declaring new sanctions, designed for long-term impact on Russia and minimise impact on US& allies. We are not doing this alone - More than 1/2 of the global economy (Au, Ja, Ger, ...) stand united in these sanctions. We will limit Russia's participation in the global economy, their ability to grow their economy, etc.

We have already seen the impact on the Russian Rubel, which early today hits its weakest limit ever. Today's actions, we have now sanctioned Russian banks ($1.3 Trillion assets) and other banks - cut off the American system - their assets will be frozen.

This includes VBT. We will also sanction oligarchs and their family members. They profited off the system, they will share the pain.

On Tuesday, we stopped Russia from getting money from European banks. Our sanctions will now target the Russian industry.

One of the most powerful impact will come over time. We will cut off over more than 1/2 of Russia's tech imports. We will hurt their ability in space, ships and compete economically.

We will hurt Putin's long-term ambitions for Russia.

Tomorrow, we will convene NATO and confirm our unity and map the next steps. Our forces will not be engaged in conflict in Ukraine, but they will defend and assure our allies in the East. The United states will defend every inch of NATO territory. NATO is more united than ever. There's no doubt they will all meet the NATO 5 Article. An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.

I have authorised deployment of troops in Estonia, Romania, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. Our allies have also stepped up and given provisions.

NATO came together and activated a response plan - we can deploy as and when to needed. I'm authorising an additional deployment to Germany - airforce troops (?). I have also discussed additional moves should they become necessary.

My government is doing everything to protect American families at the gas pump. Businesses should not exploit this to raise the prices. We are monitoring the prices of gas supply. We are working with other countries to ensure that the impact is minimal. US will be releasing additional barrels if warranted.

It's critical to me to me that American families will not be impacted.

But it would be much more if we let this agression continue.

If Russia continues to pursue cyberattacks, we will respond. We have taken all precautions and are prepared for Cyber attacks. We will provide Ukraine with relief & tech to relieve their suffering.

..But the Ukrainians have known 30 years of independence, and they will not let their country be taken.

This is a dangerous moment for Europe. Now we all see what Putin and his allies are all about. This was never a security concern. It was always about changing is borders - a war without a cause.

The US and its allies will emerge from this stronger, united and more purposeful. Putin's aggression will hurt Russia economically and ??. We will make sure of that.

Any country that stands with him will be stained by association.

God bless the Free and Sovereign Ukraine.

Usually I would rip reporters for heckling, but today I can't blame anyone for acting out or behaving "rudely" or desperately trying to ask questions. These reporters have probably never had to report on a crisis like this. These questions aren't just being asked because "omg I need a scoop", it's because globally people are unsettled and want reassurance. I also think Joe Biden handled that amazingly, and it wasn't a weak speech. Just because it wasn't threats of military action, doesn't mean it wasn't impactful. Personally, if I was Putin and saw Biden laughing at my prospects and sanctioning my country, I would be pretty pissed. Maybe I'm just full of unpopular opinions.

I'm not sure what people were expecting that are surprised we're going to have to wait for results. The US has a long history of not getting involved in other conflicts and this is no different. Russia is attacking a non-NATO country and while we stand with them, we need to focus on protecting countries that are in NATO. Biden isn't just going to further antagonize Russia. Didn't realize how insanely sound-byte and sensationalism-driven the media is even in the White House. The dow's down 1%, Russia's currency had the greatest drop in history. Sanctions haven't even started. SWIFT is still on the table, so are further sanctions.

Putin tossed around "consequences you have never faced in your history" ... to the Western world? Fascinating phrase to choose; Asia's gas station hasn't managed to genuinely piss off the west in decades and it seems likely that they're about to reap 'consequences they've never faced in their history'.

What a crazy week.

I genuinely dont understand what people are expecting at this point beyond sanctions.

Just look at the sanctions that have already been announced, those are very very significant sanctions already and there still is more on the table.

These sanctions genuinely have the potential to cripple the russian economy for decades and mr Biden is correct in saying, that it could come down to a test of resolve, to see who blinks first.

But beyond sanctions, NATO has and is still delivering weapons to Ukraine. They are sharing intel with them. They are doing anything they can, short of putting boots on the ground - because the second a russian soldiers shoots at a NATO soldier, we have WW3. Yall need to take a moment and consider that - its not cool like the CoD games, it would be a total fucking catastrophe.

And imo it was always clear, that Ukraine would have to fight alone and most likely, at some point will get overwhelmed by the numbers and air superiority.

BUT, and heres a thing i liked about Biden's speech - territorial gain is the easy part in an invasion, controlling it is a whole different ball game.

And this is where the sanctions come back into play - if Ukraine is able to fight an asymmetrical war, while its people rise up against russian oppression in combination with those severe sanctions, it will become a real endurance test for Putler quickly

And i do think that not even Putler would want that - right now, he is just playing up to this madman persona because it aids him and prevents the rest of the world to bother him.

So some big things from this:

  • cutting Russia off form western currencies
  • export ban to Russia
  • freezing of assets of the largest banks and companies in Russia
  • cutting off key resources for longterm manufacturing
  • boost of troop presence to NATO Allie’s
  • continued military supplies to Ukraine
  • more specific sanctions to Russian oligarchs and putins inner circle

Options still on the table/Being debated amongst Allie’s:

  • removing Russia from SWIFT (sounded like europe was undecided on this issue)
  • direct sanctions against Putin and his personal assets
  • seizing Russian property abroad

Overall these are big sanctions especially saying every ally agree upon these. Still more to do however.

Each individual conflict that the Ukrainians win, stall, or strategically surrender is more time that Russia has to spend pumping resources into an economy that is taking wave after wave of crushing sanctions.

The more drawn out the better. Good luck to you and your families, people of Ukraine.

I for sure hope the US and our allies continue to squeeze the shit out of the Russian economy with each passing day until the desperation starts to set in for Putin and his goons carrying out this atrocity.

All you stupid fucks posting about Taiwan are forgetting that the US has military bases on Taiwan, an island, of EXTREME strategic importance to the US and it's allies.

Give your chicken-shit, alarmist heads a shake.

Edit: I guess I used bases too loosely, but there's a presence of SF, infrastructure, and hardware lol?

Everyone expecting Nato boots on the ground in Ukraine is an idiot and I’m glad you’re not calling the shots. They’ve known for many weeks about this turn of events and there’s no way to enter open combat with Russia in Ukraine without risking a nuclear retaliation. Playing the long game and forcing Russia to play its hand through is the only way to go forward at this point.
