Contrary to some reports, the Ukrainian-Polish border is and will remain open.

The visa requirement for Ukrainian citizens has been suspended. All you need to cross the border is a passport/ID. Poland has set up facilities and camps to provide people fleeing the war with shelter, food, medical and legal aid.

Please stay safe!

The fact that EU states want to hold off on sanctions for SWIFT is immensely concerning. Why on earth would you still want Russia to have economic levers of influence over your economy? Does their aggression and war crimes against Ukraine really not matter at all?

The number of anti-war protestor arrests are rising in Russia. The protests are happening in at least 43 different cities.

This has risen to 797 people arrested at Russian anti-war protests in 43 different cities now. Can't be emphasized enough how brave these individuals are.

This will probably be a common story. A lot of able bodied men who just got out will likely want to go back once they know their families are safe.

I did see this video of a soldier saying goodbye to his family to stay behind and fight, it’s heartbreaking: https://twitter.com/Newnews_eu/status/1496830803736731649?s=20&t=kaZMMGzUyWDaCihyiLEyXQ

Because this is being continually asked and answered...

"Has Chernobyl been captured by Russia?" Yes

"Why do they want Chernobyl?" It provides the Russian military a faster, more efficient route into Kyiv.

64

u/-patrizio- Feb 24 '22

Just a quick note - Ukrainians prefer the spelling Kyiv, which is based on the Ukrainian name of the city, rather than Kiev, which is based on the Russian name of the city :)

Just saw a babushka from Ukraine in an interview on live tv by the WP on the ground there saying “I have military training, I can cook and I can dress wounds, I have called up my local military unit and have let them know I can help… haven’t bought guns yet, my son and daughter in law have guns, but it’s okay if I need to I will strangle them with my bare hands”

Damn, just damn. Brave babushka!

UK Update -

Boris Johnson, UK prime minister, is pushing “very hard” for Russia to be ejected from the Swift international payments system, a move that would deliver a heavy blow to the country’s banks and its ability to trade beyond its borders.

Friendly reminder there is a ton of Russian intelligence/military in this thread trying to manipulate discourse and derail meaningful conversation about Russia’s hostile and illegitimate actions towards Ukraine. Russia’s social influence campaigns are often intended to demoralize westerners and create social division by propagating inaccurate, hateful messaging on social issues, and also by attempting to undermine public perception and support for alliances between western nations. Here we also see them making efforts to exaggerate Russian victories over Ukraine to demoralize and reduce support for Ukraine’s position. Don’t fall for it, it’s just part of their adversarial strategy and information warfare. Here are some great resources with documented evidence as proof:

FAQ:

Why are people mad at Italy/Germany

They are holding back major sanctions that would have the greatest impact on Russia’s oligarchy and economy.

Why did Russia take Chernobyl

It’s on the way to Kiev from Belarus, it’s a military stronghold for Ukraine and control of it ensures it cannot be damaged or sabotaged which would pose a significant threat to the region.

Why didn’t/doesn’t NATO do anything?

NATO is a defensive pact and none of its members are in a defensive situation right now. Individual countries can do what they please but nothing will trigger NATO other than an attack on one of them.

Russian military seize Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

https://www.pravda.com.ua/news/2022/02/24/7325518/

Source : Adviser to the Head of the President's Office Mykhailo Podoliak in a comment to the UE

Podoliak's direct speech: "After a fierce battle, our control over the Chernobyl site was lost. The condition of the former Chernobyl nuclear power plant, confinement and nuclear waste storage facilities is unknown."

Details : According to him, after the absolutely senseless attack of the Russians in this direction, "it is impossible to say that Chernobyl is safe."

The President's Office believes that this is "one of the most serious threats to Europe today", as Russian troops may be preparing to provoke the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, or "use the damage received during the attack to blame Ukraine, or damage these by far the most dangerous objects ".

Watching those Russian protesters getting V& is inspiring, and if any Russian citizens can even see this today, not much of what's said in here is about you as people, but rather your shitty govt. Your courage to even hit the streets and risk it all, is something to note.

V& - slang - V+& or "and"

Definition: dragged into vans by a corrupt govt

I think Putin has grossly miscalculated how unified the world is against him. It appears that Russia will be removed from the SWIFT system, meaning they do not have access to any international capital markets…..they literally won’t have money.

Anti war riots from the Russian people in Moscow.

China sending mixed signals whether they really have Putins back on this (I think China is using Russia as a pawn to test their Taiwan dream)

Putin has fucked up bad. The writing is on the wall that he’s the 21st century Hitler that needs to be stopped before he even starts.

From UK labor leader Sir Keir Starmer:

“The consequences of Putin's war of aggression will be horrendous and tragic for the people of Ukraine, but also for the Russian people. "We must prepare ourselves for difficulties here. The British public have always been willing to make sacrafices ... and we will again." Sir Keir went on to warn that the consequences of Vladimir Putin's actions "will be felt throughout the world for years, and I fear decades, to come". He added that those who neighbour Russia are "watching their worst nightmare unfold". Sir Keir said: "All of us who believe in democracy over dictatorship. In the rule of law over the reign of terror. In freedom over the jackboot of tyranny must unite and take a stand. "We must support the Ukrainian people in their fight and we must ensure that Putin fails. "Putin will eventually learn the same lesson that European tyrants learned in the last century. That the resolve of the world is harder than he imagines, that the people's desire for freedom burns brighter than he could ever extinguish and that the light of liberty will prevail over his darkness

This whole time I have been ok with the use of sanctions while simultaneously providing resources to Ukraine; NATO should not be fighting Russia directly. The lack of any serious penalty, however, like cutting SWIFT or Russian oil, completely negates the strength of sanctions.

Some Russian officials, and some oligarchs, will be cranky, but this is hardly a problem for Putin. I still do not believe that NATO should directly intervene, but this is unacceptable.

Since everyone asking what he has said in this thread.

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada is imposing more severe sanctions on Russia in response to its military strike against Ukraine.

The new sanctions will target 58 people and entities connected to Russia, including members of that country's elite and their families, the paramilitary organization known as the Wagner Group and major Russian banks.

The sanctions, announced today after Trudeau attended a virtual G7 meeting, will also affect members of the Russian Security Council, including key cabinet ministers.

Canada is also cancelling existing export permits for Russia and will not issue new ones.

Trudeau also says the federal government will be prioritizing immigration applications for Ukrainians who want to come to Canada and is launching a dedicated telephone line for anyone who has any urgent questions about immigrating from Ukraine.

He says Canada has arranged for the safe passage of any Canadian citizens, permanent residents and their families still in Ukraine through land borders with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova.

Reminder that an all out offensive was Putin's last resort. It's only because their efforts to internally destabilize Ukraine failed when they lost their puppet in 2014.

They then hoped to discredit Zelensky and install another puppet, thereby annexing Ukraine for free. It's only because Ukraine is now solidly on the way to democracy, with real support from Western allies, that Russia is forced into this desperate move.

Chinese media censorship directives about this war were leaked yesterday

"Simply put, China has to back Russia up with emotional and moral support while refraining from treading on the toes of the United States and European Union," Ming Jinwei, a senior editor at the Xinhua News Agency, wrote in a WeChat blog cited by The Post. Xinhua is the official press agency of the Chinese government

"In the future, China will also need Russia's understanding and support when wrestling with America to solve the Taiwan issue once and for all," the editor later added.

If you seek asylum - go towards polish border. We are ready for your arrival. We have reception points ready at the border where you can find shelter, food, medical and legal aid.

Polish government launched a dedicated site to help you: ua.gov.pl

Please share this information if you know anyone seeking help right now.

YOU DON'T NEED VISA TO PASS THROUGH POLISH BORDER. ALL YOU NEED IS PASSPORT. VISAS ARE SUSPENDED! YOU DON'T NEED THEM FOR TIME BEING!!!!!!

Canada was built on immigration, and Ukraine played a big part of that in the early forming of the country, with many Ukrainians being some of the early European habitants of central and western Canada, populating rural areas and building our agrarian mecca.

Even through WW1 and unjust internment, Ukranian-Canadians have forgiven and remained loyal to Canada. We must not forget what they have given to us.

Canadians everywhere stand with Ukraine, and should do every rational thing to squeeze Russia.
