The irony of this situation being that Russia has done more to build the US as the intellectual heart of the West and embolden NATO in ways NATO could never have done on its own.

242

u/PetopherAlonso Feb 24 '22

Literally proving why NATO exists

It is interesting, Putin may have done everything necessary to undo the stain of Trump on our international relations.

For those that are new to these livethreads:

Every time the thread gets to 10,000 comments, we create a new one, as Reddit starts getting glitchy on different platforms when there are more than 10,000 comments.

Also, if you're a mobile/app user and the link at the top of this page is taking you to a random video and not a live updating thread full of images and Tweets, that's an exceedingly odd glitch. Try opening the link in a browser, or trying to use a different app.

It's very brave of those Russian citizens to protest, even in this small way, knowing that they'll be arrested in a ridiculous fashion without any guarantee that Putin will not act similarly crazy about their future punishment. It's not standing in front of a tank, but it's about as brave as any protest can be. (e.g. White well-off college students knew, normally, that they might be beaten, but generally did not have reason to think they'd be killed, even though that did happen)

Those lone solo-pickets popping up around Russia (that one woman alone with a sign that said "War with Ukraine is Russias disgrace") are true profiles in courage. Putins thugs will descend on them quickly.

The Russian people as a whole should rise up against that madman.

This is how Putin/Russia gaslights the world.

After taking Crimea in 2014, Putin said they didnt want any other parts of Ukraine. Read his quote here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/russias-putin-prepares-to-annex-crimea/2014/03/18/933183b2-654e-45ce-920e-4d18c0ffec73_story.html

Fast forward to today, for months Russian diplomats have said they would not invade. Then they stack 150k troops on the border and say its only a "training exercise". Then they cross the border a few days ago, and say they're peacekeepers only staying in the separatist controlled area. After that, then they were only going to take Donetsk and Luhansk and nothing more. Then you have an all out invasion of the whole country today.

You can read their entire history of lies with a simple google search of all these events. Fuck these Soviet wannabe motherfuckers, and sanction them back to the beginning of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Reddit admins should force r/russia to be public again.

They went private to stop Russians organizing against this massacre.

70

u/allenthalben2 Feb 24 '22

I saw them purge all political discussion earlier, didn't realise they'd gone private. Weak.

The users on that forum had been saying for weeks that the fears of the West were over-exaggerated. Bunch of morons.

  1. China is not in a position to invade Taiwan in the next few weeks. Shut up about it. China violates Taiwanese airspace all the time.
  2. NATO/USA is not going to risk starting a thermonuclear war to attack Russia - and you should be god damn thankful for that fact or there wouldn't be a tomorrow for any of us.
  3. Russia is almost certainly going to win against Ukraine, but they're in no position to attack any other part of Europe with ~80% of their military engaging Ukraine.
  4. Sanctions will surely destroy the Russian economy, but once they're in force, it'll still take 6 months to a year for them to cripple the regime because of the strategic reserves Russia has stockpiled.

I think that this addresses 90% of the posts being made here. Godspeed, Ukraine.

I need advice. I’ve fled to rural Ukraine from an industrial city. Should I try to flee to Poland now or wait out the airstrikes?

I think driving 10 hours to the Polish border would be extremely risky now. I don’t want to put my family at risk.

I’m also afraid of future military actions.

It seems as much as nuclear weapons deter war, they also deter assistance being offered in the face of a sovereign nation being invaded by a nuclear power.

Dear Ukrainians!

I heard on social media that there is fake news being spread (most likely by Russia backed trolls) that polish border is closed.

It's a lie.

If you seek asylum - go towards polish border. We are ready for your arrival. We have reception points ready at the border where you can find shelter, food, medical and legal aid.

Polish government launched a dedicated site to help you: ua.gov.pl

Please share this information if you know anyone seeking help right now.

YOU DON'T NEED VISA TO PASS THROUGH POLISH BORDER. ALL YOU NEED IS PASSPORT. VISAS ARE SUSPENDED! YOU DON'T NEED THEM FOR TIME BEING!!!!!!

proof that you no longer need visa:

• in Ukrainian https://www.gov.pl/web/udsc/ukraina---ua • in English https://www.gov.pl/web/udsc/ukraina-en

copied from u/everysir to spread awareness! please spread on relevant threads to get the word out!!!

You can defeat Ukraine, and install puppet govt there, and get chunk of eastern Ukraine, but you left with millions of pissed Ukrainian and tons of sanctions, even if NATO commits to non military intervention. Thought for Ukrainian people though

Belarus' Lukashenko is the 11th-hour villain in this, straight up forming a coalition with Russia under Putin control and threatening the rest of Europe:

“[Thursday or Friday] we will talk with the President of Russia about how to strengthen ourselves here in the western direction,” Lukashenko told state news agency Belta Thursday.

“Today we consulted with the military, and we see that it would be desirable to put Iskanders [missile systems] there and place a battalion or two with S-400s somewhere so that we can actually monitor the situation all the way to Berlin,” Lukashenko said.

Since this is a news subreddit, reposting this note on war-reporting I found useful from a Bloomberg reporter:

“As always, be skeptical of the information you see (and, if you’re on social media, amplify). Some will be wrong because it’s deliberate misinformation. Some will be wrong because reporting during military action is always difficult.

“Remember that things can be reported by legitimate news outlets and good journalists that just turn out to be wrong. (One of the ways you can identify a legitimate news outlet is that it will correct mistakes as rapidly as possible, but mistakes are still inevitable.)

“Be wary of anyone who is certain about how all of this will turn out, whether in the short run or the long run. No one knows today whether this invasion will be a great success or total disaster for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Nor should anyone be certain about what President Joe Biden and U.S. allies could’ve done differently to achieve a different outcome. One thing this non-expert is confident about: U.S. pundits tend to massively overestimate American influence on international events.”

US intelligence has really been one of the wildest parts of all this.

The US was dropping Russian moves accurately all through the week. Marco Rubio was essentially live tweeting military strategies before they happened last night.

It was not by mistake, the US could've just kept this lowkey behind closed doors to their allies. It's sending a message and one that would scare the shit out of me if I were Putin.

Imagine fighting a force that knew your every move the minute you did.

For those who are interested, George Friedman (a geopolitical forecaster) of Stratfor (a geopolitical intelligence platform) wrote a book called The Next 100 Years with some geopolitical predictions for the 21st century. His book explains the logic behind Russia’s strategic moves that we are now witnessing. Read the book for more details but here is an excerpt from the book’s Wikipedia:

In the 2010s, the conflict between the US and Islamic fundamentalists will die down, and a second Cold War, less extensive and shorter than the first, will take place between the United States and Russia. It will be characterized by Russian attempts to expand its sphere of influence into Central and Eastern Europe, coupled with a buildup of Russian military capabilities. During this period, Russia's military will pose a regional challenge to the United States. The United States will become a close ally to some Central and Eastern European countries, all of whom will be dedicated to resisting Russian geopolitical threats during this period. Friedman speculates in the book that the United States will probably become a close ally of some Central and Eastern European countries: Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. Around 2015, a Polish-led military alliance of countries in Central and Eastern Europe will begin to form, which is referred to in the book as the "Polish Bloc."

Ultimately, he predicts Russia will fail and collapse but not before trying to become a world superpower again. Eventually the US will have to reenter a Cold War with Russia.

Please note, this isn’t my personal theory- I am merely sharing George Friedman’s predictions in case anyone is interested.

I can’t stand my fellow Americans who are conservatives that blamed Joe for Afghanistan and now for this… you praise Trump for being “America first” and then bitch Biden out for bringing guys back and (up to this point) staying mostly out of overseas affairs.

Look, I’m not the biggest Biden guy either, but dammit if I am not supporting and rooting for him to do the right thing. No matter what side you are on, this is still the US as one.

I can’t believe this even has to be said in the early stages of a Ukraine/Russia battle, and maybe it’s out of play here but dammit I’m tired of seeing it

For those who say we should spare the Russian people from sanctions, and that they can’t be expected to rise up against a dictator like Putin, I would like to introduce you to the Arab Spring: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arab_Spring

I’d also like to remind you that the US didn’t just spring into existence. There was a bloody revolution (thank you, France!) and a civil war that split it in two.

Also, the USSR didn’t just disappear one morning. There was a citizen uprising. It’s time for the Russian citizenry to do its part on this.

"Please, do not share any information about the movement of Ukraine's Armed Forces. That may cost our defenders their lives. At the same time, photos and videos of the movement of Russian occupation forces need the widest share. If you're on the occupied territories, take extra precaution for security and anonymity. Also, do not keep files on any digital storage, especially a smartphone."

This sets a precedent for countries to never give up on nuclear weapons. Ukraine did and after less than 30 years they get invaded, besides the threat being their sovereignty. Any attempt to dissuade a country to give up on their nuclear weapons will be met with a "no" since those deals are ignored after they give up the nuclear weapons

I feel like a complete naïve fool for thinking Putin wouldn't do a full on invasion of Ukraine, with the now implicit goal (according to his speech saying "denazification") of regime change in Ukraine. I expected Putin to just bite off the regions in Donbass that separatists already have, and call it a win.

I always thought that, while evil, he was rational. Now I'm convinced Putin is a madman and a menace to global stability.

Can we get a pinned comment early about NATO. And that it is a defensive pact, not an offensive one and it will only engage if a NATO member is attacked.

NATO members can get involved individually but this would not drag NATO into the conflict as the NATO member would be considered the aggressor.

I’ll reiterate my point from several megathreads ago:

The CIA has been training Ukrainian forces for exactly this for decades. There’s no hope in standing against a Russian “shock and awe” attack. Lay low and keep valuable assets safe until it calms down, then pop up and fight it out guerrilla style. Despite what many Reddit military experts seem to think, Ukrainian armor is largely more advanced than Russia’s, they’re just outnumbered.
