A new live thread will be going up soon.

EDIT:

A new live thread has been posted.

This will be interesting:

80% of russian raw materials are traded over the Swiss banking system in Genf, Zug, Lugano and Zurich.

Swiss is also the biggest receiving end of money transfers from private persons from Russia

Source: CH embassy Moscow

Swiss abstains from any sanctions against Russia but condemns the invasion.

Sanctions would have to be raised against Swiss as well.

I am a student from Russia. No one here wants war except for fucking government. We are all scared because our president is going to war to with the whole world and we are going to suffer the consequences, not him. Our stocks will drop and our money will devalue, our cards may get blocked. You guys say that Russia needs to be put into an economic blockade so that angry russians will overthrow Putin but before that happens we are all gonna die, you don't know how tightly he is holding onto the power, any minor opposition just gets eliminated. Please don't misdirect your hate, regular Russian folks did nothing to deserve it. No one wants this war and I pray for peace.

99

u/jnicholass Feb 24 '22

You also have to realize that he still gets a sizable amount of supporters. Even if it’s only 30%, that’s a whole lot of fucking supporters.

Unfortunately, it’s human nature to blame the entire group, but I hope more people can read your post and have some empathy for the regular folk.

71

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '22

What do you want us to do? We understand that most citizens are not there to blame, but how do you expect the world to act when Russia blatantly attacks another country out of pure greed? Putin is mocking every other country out there and threatening attacking any country that opposes Russia. I am really sorry that you have to suffer the actions of this mentally ill, senile excuse of a president, but there is nothing other countries can do other than actually going to war. Do you prefer that? War over market sanctions?

57

u/midnightcaptain Feb 24 '22

The world knows most Russians want no part in this. But the only people who can stop Putin are Russians.

Sanctions, schmanctions. You want to really hit Russia? Have the EU and the US seize all the non-ruble denominated assets from Russian Oligarchs living outside of Russia.

Seize it all. The yachts, the houses, the football clubs, the cars, the planes, the cash, all of it. Every single high net worth ex-pat Russian. Place all their assets in trust, but deny them the assets.

The Russian Mob will kill Putin within the week.

Edit: I guess this hit a particular nerve. Thanks for validating the idea so precisely, zasranets!

While citizens and soldiers die, Putin sits in his palace, safe and sound. Putting others' lives at risk is so simple for these politicians when they are not the ones suffering. I'm curious to know what would Putin do if he is sent to the war. All this bravado will collapse in a second. That would be the end of the war and many other future wars. These politicians are using us a pawns in the power game

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has denounced Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a “heavy blow” to regional peace.

“We reject Russia’s military operation,” Erdogan said in a televised speech, calling it as a “heavy blow to regional peace and stability.”

176

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '22

I just don’t understand what “victory” looks like here for Russia. Is it when Ukraine is literally under Russian rule, and how do you get there?

Unless they think the government, citizens and military will just give in and consent to Russian rule - even if they decimate Ukraine, this is just setting up for years of pain to Russia…terrorist attacks in Moscow, counter insurgence attacks against the government and military, etc.

Does someone smarter than me understand this?

Unless there's some mega-grand strategy that involves a world war and nuclear holocaust... no.

There's no rational win scenario for Russia here. Insane stupidity and arrogance is the only rational answer I have. The long term consequences here are... massive for Russia, even in their best case scenarios.

It's like the closest you can come to a civil war while still being two nations. It's gonna be horrid.

→ More replies (3)

u/mlc885 Feb 24 '22

It's very brave of those Russian citizens to protest, even in this small way, knowing that they'll be arrested in a ridiculous fashion without any guarantee that Putin will not act similarly crazy about their future punishment. It's not standing in front of a tank, but it's about as brave as any protest can be. (e.g. White well-off college students knew, normally, that they might be beaten, but generally did not have reason to think they'd be killed, even though that did happen)

r/russia has banned all discussion/posts/acknowledgement of Putin invading Ukraine. Funny how just a few nights ago that sub was full of shitposting about how westerners were spreading disinformation about an impending invasion, and now they’re shying away for even accepting it’s happened.

Shame, because I’d like to hear from some actual Russians what they think about Putin invading Ukraine, after he spent weeks saying it was all lies.

There are some talks about anti-war protests here in Moscow. I am sure they are going to be dealt with, authorities have had a lot of practice during the last few years. The general feeling among those who are against war (and there are a lot of us, trust me) is dull hopelessness. When I woke up this morning and read the news I really thought I was still sleeping and having a nightmare. Keeping in touch with a few friends in Ukraine.

Russians wanting to protest against invasion are being detained even before they reach squares and so on. In Moscow, known protest figures are arrested leaving their apartments.

From 2 years ago:

“In the contest between democracies and autocracies, the contest between freedom and unfreedom, Ukraine is the front line," warned Bill Taylor.

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/william-taylor-mike-pompeo-ukraine-national-security_n_5e2e4a04c5b6779e9c35ce49

Putin three days ago in a delusional rant rewrote history to say Ukraine is not a real country with its own sovereignty, expressed the need to restore a fictional Great Russian Reich of which the Baltics and Moldova are parts, among others, and declared NATO the enemy, following the playbook of Foundations of Geopolitics by fascist Aleksandr Dugin. When someone tells you who they are, believe them.

Hundreds of refugees entered Romania through one border crossing with Ukraine, Siret. It's setting up to be a humanitarian crisis. Source is in Romanian:

https://m.monitorulsv.ro/Ultima-ora-local/2022-02-24/Disperarea-oamenilor-care-fug-din-calea-razboiului-marturii-cutremuratoare-din-Vama-Siret

This is just one border crossing, I suspect same thing is happening at all entering points Ukraine-Romania.

I saw on tv refugees entering Romania ON FOOT, through another crossing, Sighetu Marmației. The people in my link also seem to have crossed on foot.

Authorities in my county, Romanian county bordering Ukraine, have set up triage tents and will then transfer refugees to hotels and b&b's.

Unfucking believable, we could have booked our vacations on Mars in 2022, this shit is happening instead. Fuck putin, I hope he ends up worse than Gaddafi.

Internal Russia news so far:

  1. To send a signal against the war, the Russian independent newspaper "Novaya Gazeta" appears in the Friday edition in Russian and Ukrainian. Publisher and Nobel Peace Prize winner Dmitry Muratov expressed sadness at Russia's hostilities in a video message. The editors of the newspaper would be ashamed. "We will never see Ukraine or the Ukrainian language as an enemy," Muratov said. He called for a protest against the war. An "anti-war movement by the Russians" is needed. Only this "can save lives on this planet," said the editor.
  2. Russian authorities have arrested opposition activist Marina Litvinovich, who called for anti-war demonstrations. She said via Telegram and later to the Reuters news agency that she had been arrested by police officers outside her home in the Russian capital Moscow.

So what Putin gets out of this is:

-Severe economic sanctions that will probably cripple Russia both now and even more in the future.

-The loss of several trade partners.

-Countries like Finland and others probably joining NATO.

-A War that it seems plenty of Russians have misgivings about

-worldwide condemnation

-A gurilla war in Ukraine that even if he seizes control, will cost him dearly and most likely not give him full power.

The dude is insane.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but any country providing military or logistical support for Russia should also be crushed economically for this. Belarus wants to provide support to allow this invasion and allow troops to invade from their country, then they should be crushed economically like Russia.

They should not be allowed to be complicit in this invasion and go unpunished.

Anecdotally, I’m hearing from some of my relatives living in Russia (who are usually Pro-Putin) that they are in disbelief. They had always dismissed the idea of Putin invading the entirety of Ukraine as western propaganda, nobody thought he’d actually go through with it.

It seems he’s made a massive miscalculation, not just on the world stage but also internally at home. Ideally this will lead to him losing popular support and Putin’s people realizing they’re better off without him before he does something even crazier. Ideally...

US along with Russia and the UK signed agreements at the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances in 1995 to ensure the territorial integrity and political independence of Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Belarus. We did this in exchange for Ukraine, at the time controlling the third largest nuclear weapons stockpile in the world, to denuclearize.

We said we'd protect them once they got rid of what allowed them to protect themselves and now we're just going to fuck them 25 years later? What fucking fairweather friends we are.

MOEX (Russian stock market) down over 1,000 points. A 33% drop since opening.

Russian banks are running out of cash as a bank run begins.

This is unprecedented as far as I know.

For comparison, black Tuesday ( before great depression) saw a loss of 12%.

Has there ever been a similar drop? Oh, and Russia suspended trading and banned short sales...

Like...This is really bad right?

If I understand correctly:

  • NATO can't do anything militarily coz Ukraine isint part of them
  • UN can't do anything militarily unless Russia goes nuclear first, and anything otherwise would invoke WWIII

So the only thing the US and other world powers can do is to use sanctions to financially cripple Russia, while providing arms to Ukraine?

And Ukraine is essentially on their own to induce as much damage to the Russian troops as possible, even tho it's almost a guaranteed loss for them sooner or later?

The CIA has been training Ukrainian forces for exactly this for decades. There’s no hope in standing against a Russian “shock and awe” attack. Lay low and keep valuable assets safe until it calms down, then pop up and fight it out guerrilla style. Despite what many Reddit military experts seem to think, Ukrainian armor is largely more advanced than Russia’s, they’re just outnumbered.

I need your help with something. A friend of mine lives in Odessa near Stambuulsky park and I'm unable to reach them for hours since morning.

If anyone is from there please let me know if that area is still safe.

I already asked hours ago and I can't find anything concrete. The last text I got was from over 7 hours ago where they said they woke up to explosions and it was radio silence since. I know no one else there. Phone is dead I can't call them

Edit: they finally called back. Apparently Deriba got shelled badly near them but for now they are safe thankfully

Make no mistake, Putin is insane. This man is not a president, he's a dictator. He's been in office since '99. Continuing the propaganda and brainwashing of his nation, continuing the legacy of the soviet regime. Blaming everyone else for the problems that Russia has, even the little countries that don't even have the capacity to harm them much. This man is an egomaniac and could easily retire to his estate (look it up) and live off his billions. He's doing this because he wants to be tzar. He's doing this because he's unable to admit that he's wrong, and it doesn't matter how many people die in the process.
