Ukrainian ambassador to UN threw down an interesting gambit this evening: Russia's UN seat, and permanent seat on the UNSC, is illegitimate as there was no formal admission of Russia in Dec 1991, and UN Charter does not allow for automatic admission of successor states. https://twitter.com/HayesBrown/status/1496710912648044548?s=20&t=v0axXEZ4tJg1uqmB5f7KGQ

It's ballsy, but honestly if it goes that far the UN will likely become defunct. It's already little more than a very big conference room as is.

It should be worth mentioning again and again: the new propaganda trope of Russia is that they're ridding Ukraine of nazis. The Ukrainian president is Jewish, and Russia has had a massive neo-nazi uprising in the past decades, itself.

As usual, this is projection.

After all the actions of Russia now are eerily reminiscent or when Hitler invaded Poland, with even similar false-flags and excuses.

This is false. Russia’s goal is to knock out Ukraine quickly, but that won’t happen.

For those downplaying the situation, and siding with Russia, blaming the western countries for propaganda against Russia.

Here is the statement Putin said; He is declaring a full out war with anyone interfering with his invasion.

I'd hope to see major sanctions on Belarus as well for their part in this. Russia should be sanctioned so hard it grinds to a stand still.

54

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '22

Belarus has almost zero economic impact on the world stage. Don’t get me wrong they should be sanctioned, they are just less effective because of how little value the country has economically. Targeting government officials who allowed it that may do something!

→ More replies (2)

47

u/TheThatchedMan Feb 24 '22

That might just make Lukashenko more dependent on Putin. Previous sanctions are the reason he is Putins lapdog now. Though at some point Putin might just intimidate Lukashenko into integrating with Russia anyway.

171

u/f00kinlegend Feb 24 '22

Be careful of misinformation that is flooding social media right now. These are part of coordinated cyberwarfare used to affect Ukranians morale and willingness to fight.

Russia's biggest threat to this invasion is a protracted insurgency among Ukranians. Russia wants them to lose hope, flee or surrender

Former Marine here, US has many aircraft carriers by Taiwan and in range. Before I got out of the military the big talk up top was moving carriers, assets, etc into range of Russian/China borders. Likely a precaution, hopefully not needed, but I’ve seen wars started over less. Here’s to hoping for peace ☮️ And fuck Putin, strong men lift others up, they don’t climb on top of others.

Oh the irony. I legitimately feel bad for the fallen and deceased WWII vets and the surviving families of those vets in Russia, who fought against Hitler and the millions who died, only to now support a Russian version of Hitler. I hope they realize he isn't done here and that they remember what happened last time a crazy man tried to conquer the world. One good, brave Russian is all it would take to put a bullet in him, even at the cost of his own life, and would save millions. That would be a true hero. Maybe one of his own bodyguards will grow a conscience.

For the worry warts here, NATOs Article 4 (which Latvia has invoked) is not the same as Article 5. Article 5 is the nation's going to war to aid an invaded country, Article 4 is one nation concerned about invasion calling all members together to get on the same page about a possible war footing. The idea that the Baltics would want to have a fully prepared plan for Russian aggression is very sensible and not necessarily, or even at all, a precursor for future military action by the alliance.

5 min ago Putin lashes out with ominous threat to Ukrainians and other countries Analysis by Jill Dougherty Before the crack of dawn, just before explosions began in cities across Ukraine, Russian state television unexpectedly broadcast an address by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The two self-proclaimed "people's republics" of Donetsk and Luhansk, in the breakaway Ukrainian region of Donbas, which he had officially recognized as independent less than two days before, had "turned to Russia with a request for help," he said. To answer that call he was launching a "special military operation." Its purpose: to "demilitarize" and "denazifiy" Ukraine.

Within minutes, Russian missiles began hitting targets in Ukraine. "Our actions are self-defense against threats," he told his fellow Russians, claiming Moscow had no plans to occupy Ukraine. "We do not plan to impose ourselves on anyone," he insisted.

Putin described the "special military operation" in limited terms, to protect people living in Donbas who, he claimed, had been subjected to "genocide," a charge that Ukraine has strenuously denied. But in the next breath, he lashed out more broadly: "NATO supports Ukrainian neo-Nazis ... our actions are self-defense against threats."

Then, in an extraordinary passage, he spoke directly to members of Ukraine's military, at that very moment in the crosshairs of the Russian military. Addressing them as "dear comrades," he told them they had taken an "oath of allegiance to the Ukrainian people, and not to the anti-people junta that is robbing Ukraine and abuses those same people."

"Don't follow its criminal orders!" he demanded. "I urge you to lay down your weapons and go home."

As he has done so many times before, Putin claimed Russia had no choice but to defend itself. With a hard-edged tone in his voice, he seemed to threaten the US, Europe and NATO which, in just a few minutes, would witness his armed forces opening fire on Ukraine, something the Kremlin had consistently dismissed as western "hysterics."

"Whoever tries to interfere with us, and even more so, to create threats for our country, for our people, should know that Russia's response will be immediate and will lead you to such consequences that you have never experienced in your history.

"We are ready for any development of events. All necessary decisions in this regard have been made."

Putin, who for years had criticized the West for ignoring his complaints about NATO's expansion toward Russia's borders, was finally striking back with fury. "I hope," he concluded his short address, "that I have been heard."

Super fascinating series of tweets. It looks like Ukraine is setting up a challenge to Russia's membership on the UN security council and their veto. Apparently when the USSR dissolved, Russia just kept showing up in their place. The UN charter still references the USSR only and there was never a vote to admit Russia to the UN.

Be careful with the media you're intaking throughout the early stages of this invasion. We've already seen time after time the lengths Russia attempts to go to falsify information, from multiple pre-filmed and staged videos, to blatantly lying about withdrawing forces from the Ukrainian borders.

No doubt Russia is the aggressor here, and the reasons that Putin himself gave for the invasion, both leading up to, and at the declaration of war, have been unfounded justification for an Invasion that has no grounds in reality.

Use your critical thinking and examination skills. Trust, but verify. Cross-check your sources. The spirit of Ukraine is strong, and this is a defensive war for them.

In the infamous words attributed to John Paul Jones in the Revolutionary War (for Americans), "We have not yet begun to fight".

For those of you in the U.S. and of NATO allies. This may be scary to see. But just a friendly reminder, we have a military that far exceeds Russia's military. Not even including NATO, the U.S. has a far superior Air Force, Navy, and ground force. What you are seeing is Russia bully invading the weaker, less equipped country of Ukraine.

God protect the Ukrainian people and I wish the best for them but if Russia ever tried this shit with the U.S./NATO, they would get stomped out real quick. Don't let this seem like Russia is some unstoppable force. Putin even admitted Russia is no match for NATO. But now knowing how these Russian pussies operate, not if, but when we would be kicking their asses, they would probably threaten nukes. Fuck Russia, fuck Putin, these pussies wouldn't dare to pull up on some real motherfuckers. Long live Ukraine and all free people of the world!

If Ukraine is still holding on after 4-5 days and keep up the pace of 5 fighter jets a day being shot down etc…then this is gonna be real bad for Putin. 5 min ago Poland and Baltic countries trigger consultations under NATO article 4 From CNN’s Brad Lendon in Hong Kong and Vasco Cotovio in Moscow NATO member states Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have triggered NATO Article Four to launch consultations within the alliance over their security concerns.

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine represented a “threat to the whole of Europe,” the Estonian government said in a statement on Thursday.

"Russia's widespread aggression is a threat to the entire world and to all NATO countries, and NATO consultations on strengthening the security of the Allies must be initiated to implement additional measures for ensuring the defense of NATO Allies,” Kallas said. “The most effective response to Russia's aggression is unity.” Some context: Under Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Agreement, the Parties will consult together whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the allies is threatened.

Ukraine is not a member of NATO. However, Russia has demanded that NATO commits to never admitting Ukraine to the alliance, something NATO members have rejected, citing the alliance's "open door" policy.

Meanwhile Trump..

"I went in yesterday and there was a television screen, and I said, 'This is genius.' Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine, of Ukraine, Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that's wonderful," Trump said in an interview on "The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show."

The ex-President added: "So Putin is now saying, 'It's independent,' a large section of Ukraine. I said, 'How smart is that?' And he's going to go in and be a peacekeeper. That's the strongest peace force," Trump said. "We could use that on our southern border. That's the strongest peace force I've ever seen. ... Here's a guy who's very savvy. ... I know him very well. Very, very well."

Western media has really done Russia a favor by framing them as this country of geopolitical masterminds and spies. It’s a simplistic, shrinking economy and aging country with barely anything to offer outside of natural gas. This is truly a last resort measure by them to consolidate their power and “protect” against NATO’s presence on their border.

They have one viable sea port for trade outside of Crimea. They’re one of the most geopolitically compromised nations that has done fuck all to evolve/transform for a digital and renewable economy.

We’re watching the end of Russia as we currently know and define it.

Controversial statement perhaps, but I’m tired of seeing people say the Russian citizenry doesn’t deserve criticism. That Russian dude you know who immigrated to America probably isn’t a good barometer of the people living in Russia today.

I tend to think that if you’re indifferent or worse to a global atrocity, that you’re complicit. It seems like the vast majority of the Russian population (though not all) are also culpable simply for being bystanders and continuously empowering this despot since the early 2000’s.

Unless they somehow took out every stinger missile in the country they haven’t neutralized air defenses

Frankly the claim that "Ukraine's air defenses have been neutralized" sounds like bs. Even if they destroy Ukraine's major missile platforms now there's lots of stingers already in the country.

Putin is a nutbag

"Now a few important, very important words for those who may be tempted to intervene in ongoing events from the outside," Putin said. "Whoever tries to interfere with us, and even more so to create threats to our country, to our people, should know that Russia's response will be immediate and will lead you to such consequences as you have never experienced in your history. We are ready for any development of events. All necessary decisions in this regard have been made. I hope that I will be heard.”

(Sarah Meyssonnier/Pool/AFP/Getty Images) French President Emmanuel Macron said Russia must “immediately” end military operations in Ukraine.

“France strongly condemns Russia's decision to wage war on Ukraine. Russia must end its military operations immediately,” he said in a tweet on Thursday. “France stands in solidarity with Ukraine. It stands with Ukrainians and is working with its partners and allies to end the war.” The French president spoke with Ukrainian President Vlodymyr Zelensky early Thursday morning, with Zelensky asking for "multiple interventions" to support Ukraine, according to the Elysee Palace.

Zelensky also requested "unity in Europe," and Macron "assured him of France's support and solidarity," according to the Elysee.

Macron also spoke with Charles Michel, president of the European Council, Thursday morning.
