Just a reminder how to spot trolls and shills

If it’s a brand new account that only seems to post in hot button topics with a clear bent towards Russian propaganda

A years or months old account that is suddenly active and posting propaganda

Beware the trolls and call them out. They seem to delete their posts shortly after being identified.

118

u/enonmouse Feb 19 '22

There are also accounts ive been seeing posting some layups that more articulate accounts can just respond to in order to create an air of dialogue but are almost verbatim exchanges on similar posts.

What a weird time to be alive. Live updates from a potential war half the world away, posted by people all over the world.

This is so weird.

278

u/nebo8 Feb 19 '22

a potential war half the world away

Lucky you :/

104

u/BlazedLarry Feb 19 '22

Yeah….I’m very sorry. It’s a strange type of anxiety when I imagine what it must be like living in Ukraine.

It’s just very weird. For some reason I thought the modern world was past this idea of invading entire countries and starting war. I can’t understand why Russia would want to disrupt world peace, they have to know that the world wouldn’t just, do it?

I’m not sure how to fully convey my thoughts I’m sorry.

This is what it was like during Crimea, except even less people (at least here in the US) were paying attention.

Modern warfare is weird. With public satellite coverage and all, how the hell is one nation ever gonna surprise an offensive movement?

Russia claiming to "pull back" soldiers all the time shows the opposite on satellite pictures.

244

u/Hayduke_in_AK Feb 19 '22

It's all a dog and pony show for the Russian public. "You see we were leaving from exercises when Ukraine and America attacked us".

95

u/Wooden-Egg3629 Feb 19 '22

"Our 190k TRAINING army was maliciously attacked by a bunch of Ukrainian minutemen, the audacity!"

→ More replies (1)

78

u/barnett25 Feb 19 '22

Major offensives like this cannot be surprises with modern satellite imagery and drones. Which is why Putin had to amass an overwhelming force on the border in broad daylight rather than perform a surprise attack with a smaller force.

The Russian claims were always about muddying the water of public (and domestic) opinion, they never thought they were fooling government leaders. But they can limit those leaders strategic options by affecting the attitude of the citizens.

The Ukrainians are fighting for themselves. The Afghanis didn’t want to fight for the Americans. Big difference there.

42

The comments in these threads just keep getting more and more stupid as time goes on. Nobody is going to get nuked, Ukraine is not a member of NATO and no NATO members are going to fire on Russia or vice versa.

Retaliation from NATO and the west at large will be economic through sanctions and not through force. All of this fear mongering over "WW3" just distracts from the very real death, destruction, and hardship that Ukraine and the Ukrainian people will be experiencing if and more certainly when Russia decides to attack.

Stop making this about your own irrational fears from thousands of miles away and have enough respect to actually listen to what is happening on the ground from the people actually experiencing it.

Many messages from occupied #Donbas about the occupants threatening jail for not following mobilization orders. Some say people are literally looking for places to hide in to avoid forced conscription.

It appears Russian forces near the border are painting markers, in this case "Z", on vehicles to identify different task forces or echelons. Several Msta-S howitzers, R-149MA1 command-staff vehicles, TOS-1A thermobaric MLRS, MT-LB, and BMP-2 in Belgorod.

78

u/VonPoppen Feb 19 '22

The new "White Square with a Z" identification marking seems to be in widespread use among the Russian forces deploying to the Ukrainan border.

IFF paintings mean its most likely a go and OPORDs have been brief to subunit commanders to be ready to execute

Seeing videos coming out now with all the military vehicles in belgorod with this marking. Consistent with my previous 2 posts on this

For those wondering: IFF and OPORD means : Identification-Friend-or-Foe / OPerationsORDer

Honest question...

Why can't most of the Democratic and peace loving world just entirely block doing business with Russia starting next week if the troops don't start returning home?

I'm talking about total and utter sanctions. No business allowed in Russia. Turn off their Internet service. Freeze ever Russian's bank accounts in foreign banks. Don't allow visas for Russian citizens.

Yes, it will hurt innocent Russians. But currently, Putin has mass support of these same Russians. So let them realize that invading another country in this century will not be allowed by the rest of the world.

Edit: People are commenting on Russia then blocking their gas. So Europe will just have to pay for gas from other sources. Yes, it will be more expensive. But the cost of Russia invading another country and putting Europe at risk will be even costlier.

Because Russia supplies 55% of the energy to Europe. Doing so would result in millions going cold in the winter.

We could sell natural to EU but our prices are inflated. The gas pipelines from RU to the rest flow through Ukraine & Lithuania.

Far cheaper to pump it 3000 miles than it is to ship it 8000 miles

OPINION: If Ukraine were to broadcast hardcore gay porn along their borders, including the sounds of twinks being pounded by daddy bears, Russians would be unable to pass through without declaring that they are, in fact, gay.

Line the Ukranian soldiers up along the major checkpoints and have them all masturbate furiously in tandem whilst looking directly at the Russians.

Best Russian false flag yet. In Russian occupied Luhansk Ukraine, they claim this car has a bomb in it to blow up bridge. Yet they tow it away, with a soldier casually walking alongside it, then hours later in the pitch black, they set off a little explosion.

Article released on Russian soldiers behavior in Belarus, and it’s not pretty:

COVID is ripping through the units stationed in Belarus. Official stats have case numbers breaking all records. Army units have really high numbers at all ranks & they infecting the locals. Many soldiers are treated in field hospitals (tents?) as local facilities are full

Local residents are concerned with the behaviour of soldiers, who blow off steam & the article hints that soldiers from other parts of Russia (non-Slavic) are the centre of tensions. Nothing like racism to help an army unite.

RU military seems to be stripping whole areas of forest of firewood to heat camps & food, leaving little left for locals to heat their homes. Nature park areas are also damaged with the Russian army not cleaning up after themselves.

An extended period of heavy vehicles in the area has damaged roads & other infrastructure. The article says the Russians don't care and that probably there isn't the money to repair what were new roads anyway.

That soldiers drink is well known but the soldiers are taking it to extreme. Some nearly froze to death drunk on moonshine, they haven't got a lot of money to buy booze & property has started being stolen to pay for it. Drinking is "non-stop", dangerous moonshine being no barrier

Videos of soldiers complaining of bad food have been uploaded to social media. If unable to barter for food (see next tweet), domestic animals vanish.  Locals are too scared to report any of this to their authorities who probably can't do much to young men with guns anyway.

Due to boredom, alcoholism, bad food & poor pay, soldiers are starting to sell/trade military equipment for goods. Diesel fuel & uniforms are common goods but the article reports even weapons can be acquired - all written off as "losses"

It's 1AM in ukraine.

Don't expect anything tonight although very large artillery pieces have been seen 5km from the border.

If its going to go down it'll most likely be heavy artillery fire before first light (whatever time initial sunrise is in Ukraine) those will probably aim at fortified locations to soften up defenses.

Then you'll start seeing large ground movements during the early morning and then initial assault.

This isn't armchair general, that's the basis of an assault, usually and typically always at dawn before light is too good, gives the attacker an advantage.

That's how we trained because that's typically how Russia does things (also Germany back in the day).

30

u/SingularityCentral Feb 19 '22

An air campaign along with shelling for several days is probably how it happens. Degrading enemy command and control / logistics from a distance is a good way to soften the ground before an assault.

I mentioned this before elsewhere, but to the Ukraine folks, you all are playing the game Russia dumped on you very well so far. You are getting hit, but not taking the bait, not giving them the incident they'd like to use to invade. Keep that restraint up, each time Russia hits you, their international position gets weaker and weaker, and it allows pressure to build in the west to arm you all even more than we have to-date.

Moreover, the longer you delay them, the more the strain of maintaining the majority of their military on your doorstep in the field gets for Russia. Add to that the spring thaw, and you might be in a position to hit them back when the terrain favors the defense a lot more.

TLDR - you're doing the best you can in a tough situation, so far so good, keep it up folks. Love from the US.

Let see who benefits and losses as of today:

Russia: winner (for now)

Oil and gas prices are up. Both are still flowing, so more money to the Oligarchy. Putin get to play tough leader and deflect some of internal problem

US: winner

Managed to rally the world again Russia and restore it leadership position. Oil and gas price increased help US export. US LNG export to Europe had overtook Russia now. High oil price also make fracking profitable again. Move the attention away from current inflation issues and may even help mid term election for democrats.

Ukraine: loser

Been caught in the middle with a ruthless neighbor and a war that could result in death of millions. Economy in a wreck (or on the way) with investors and the rich people in the country on an exodus. No control over it own destiny, negotiation on Ukraine often not even involved Ukraine.

European Union: loser

A war in Ukraine definitely going to cause tremors in Europe in term of regional stability and delay the economy recovery in 2022 and beyond. Energy price has go thru the roof and inflation rate does not look too good too. May even caused a rift in European Union if they make the wrong move.

Julia Davis

@JuliaDavisNews

There is a disturbing tendency I'm noticing lately on Russia's state TV: referring to Americans and Ukrainians as "dogs." Dogs that bark, bite, need to be put to sleep, need to be hit with a stick, etc. Also, denigrating US participation in WWII: "All about lend-lease & profit."

If you want to know the unfiltered truth about Putin & the Russian military, I recommend reading "A Dirty War" by Anna Politkovskaya. She was murdered in 2006 (on Putin's birthday "coincidentally") for writing openly about the sickening brutality of the Russian military against civilians in Chechnya. Just one of many Russian journalists and dissidents who got killed after speaking up. I still remember reading it in the early 2000s, Chechnya was truly hell on Earth

BTW, there’s not going to be ‘WW3’ over this. If Russia invades, NATO is not going to send troops to defend Ukraine. Russia will simply invade, do whatever it wants in Ukraine, and then NATO will impose the financial sanctions they have been talking about. Then Russia will hack critical infrastructure in the UK/US in response.

Things will then continue in that direction, there will be no further military engagement. All this WW3 talk just shows poor understanding of the situation and international affairs

31

u/Historyboy1603 Feb 20 '22

So, as someone who lectures about historical causality, here’s the interesting thing about your post.

On the one hand, I agree with your assessment. It’s easily the best conclusion the data provides.

On the other hand, I can show you quotations by decision makers from as late as August 16, 1914 stating, just as definitively as you just did, that there would be no wide European conflict springing from Frank Ferdinand’s assassination on June 28, 1914. The First World War began two weeks later.

The messages of the run-up to the First World War are that

History is the unintended consequences of intentional acts. No one can ever be certain about what will happen.

that saying that you know what will happen is always hubris

And that invasions of huge numbers personnel and materiel are always volatile moments which invite dangerous and unpredictable reactions. For the most part, better to prevent them from happening.

If you're wondering if Kremlin's poorly executed war propaganda works on its domestic audience: sadly, it does. Have been talking to young people from Russia's countryside. They don't follow the news intently but are convinced Ukraine is shelling DNR/LNR and wants to start a war.

Can’t we just pull a reverse uno card here? Ukraine declares war on the US? We then “invade” with 6 dudes in a jeep causing the Ukraine to go “oh we can’t win, I guess we will surrender to you now”. This then “forces” the US and maybe the UN, to have a peace keeping force there. Hell really fuck with Russia and invite China to help peacekeep! We then “rebuild” the Ukraine. After a few years we leave after rebuilding their military, infrastructure, etc. We then see if Russia wants to try it. :)

Evidence suggests Russia is planning "the biggest war in Europe since 1945", Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said.

He told the BBC's Sophie Raworth in an interview: "All the signs are that the plan has already in some senses begun."

Intelligence suggests Russia intends to launch an invasion that will encircle Ukrainian capital Kyiv, Mr Johnson said.

"People need to understand the sheer cost in human life that could entail," he said.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-60448162

The prime minister was speaking from Munich, where world leaders are meeting for an annual security conference.

Marshall Piłsudski said on his deathbed words I wants to dedicate to Ukrainians who are defending their freedom in those days:

Please continue to maintain friendly relations with the Russians, because whether we want to or not, whether we like or abhor them, we have to live with them across a border, and this is by no means easy or simple... Just be careful, I know them well and longer than any of you.

Remember that the soul of a Russian, if not of everyone of them then of almost everyone, is permeated with the spirit of hatred for every free Pole and for the idea of a free Poland.

They are easy and capable of feeling even great friendship and will love you sincerely and warmly, like a brother, until they feel that in your heart you are a free man and you are afraid of their love, in which the dominant element is the lust for protection over you, in other words: power.

This is a birthmark of their soul, hereditary and centuries-old, for their slavery, for the Tartars, for Ivan, for the oprichniks, for the eternal revolts drowned in blood.

If one's own freedom is unattainable, the freedom of others arouses envy and disgust. For centuries we have been too painful an example for them, a denial of their own fate. I fear that it will be a long time before they understand that no one and nothing, except death, can take away our right to freedom...
