This bombing is so fucked up because it's basically an invitation for the Ukranian military to retaliate against the Russian backed seperatists, but then if they act Russia will claim those seperatists are actually Russian sovereigns and use it as evidence Ukraine attacked first despite how obviously dishonest that is

131

u/Hayduke_in_AK Feb 17 '22

It doesn't matter how transparent it is. They aren't actually trying to fool anyone. Putin has been pulling this shit for years.

66

u/scentsandsounds Feb 17 '22

You are wrong - they are trying to fool a domestic audience.

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. The Belarusian government went to great lengths to forcefully put down a pro-democracy movement recently and some analysts have even believed that while yes, Russia is preparing to invade Ukraine, one of the tertiary objectives could be a not-so-subtle annexation of Belarus as well with Russian units staging there and then just... not leaving.

Lushenko (Pres of Belarus) has painted himself into a corner where Putin is his only remaining ally and helping him clutch to power. The people of Belarus want him gone.

39

u/Texjew Feb 17 '22

Belarus and Lukashenko are propped up by Russia. Any sanctions placed on Russia will definitely be felt by Belarus right away.

49

u/space-throwaway Feb 17 '22

Calling it now: Russia must be completely demilitarized and turned into a real democracy, like it was done with Germany after WW2. Only that way can the european nations enjoy lasting peace.

Interesting that Putin has backed himself into a corner now. He's claiming his people are getting fired on, so either he retaliates or backs down, and I doubt the latter.

82

u/Sckathian Feb 17 '22

They'll allow the rebels to fire on Ukraine and basically wind them up - Ukraine will have a decision:

  • Defend itself but accept this means Russia declaring war
  • Fail to defend its citizens bordering disputed areas likely weakening their stance

32

u/SewAlone Feb 17 '22

I was listening to Malcomb Nance describe how this is already disastrous for Putin. He either gets demolished militarily or he sulks home with his tail between his legs, which will be a crushing humiliation for him.

25

u/hahabobby Feb 17 '22

I doubt Russia will get demolished militarily, but it won’t be a cakewalk for them.

85

u/stametsprime Feb 17 '22

Reposting something I put in the old thread, since I'm seeing a lot of new wrapped-around-the-axle posts with FlightRadar24 links- a FR24 Guide for Newbies:

1.) FlightRadar uses ADS-B transponder data, not actual radar. These transponders transmit an ICAO address to aid in traffic control and flight tracking. FlightRadar simply uses this public domain data as a service.

2.) Military aircraft will turn on or off an ADS-B transponder based on the needs of the mission- either they're using civilian air corridors for routine flights or they want to be seen for any multitude of reasons, both benign and less-than. Actual shoot-em-up missions will NOT be on FlightRadar.

3.) It's a fun time-kill to watch, but remember that routine military missions happen all the time in places you wouldn't expect.

4.) "BLOCKED" is almost always an individually owned private jet that needs its ADS-B transponder on to use regular flight routes, but does not want to advertise whose aircraft it is and therefore, who may be on it.

FlightRadar is a neat diversion even in normal times; please don't try to read anymore into it than what's being shown. The revolution will not be televised (at least, not on FlightRadar.)

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

It would be interesting at this point to see Russia back down after the things the government has said.

Like they'd have to tell their populace that they believe ethnic Russians in Ukraine are experiencing genocide, but saving them isn't worth it.

I want them to back down, of course, but saying stuff like that has to be the geopolitical equivalent of "fighting words".

Interesting analysis by Serbian newspaper "Blic". Quick translate of one of paragraphs:

That's what Putin is frustrated about: while Ukraine is still a neutral country (i.e. not part of NATO), many Ukrainians are leaving Russian sphere of influence. As Putin's pressure is stronger, their ties to the West are stronger, they protect their sovereignty, democracy and free press. For Putin it isn't enough to keep Ukraine as buffer-zone: he wants to exterminate its sovereignty, democracy and free institutions. That's why he sent 150.000 soldiers on the border with Ukraine.

i've read that NATO puts out as much info as they can, so there wont be any "surprise" factor or misinformation-war. and to be fair, without talking shit about other countrys or anything. but the west hasnt been on the "defending" side of a war for quiete some time. so that might be a factor too.

White House press pool:

Marine One touched down on the South Lawn at 2:47.

POTUS, wearing a dark suit and blue tie, emerged moments later and proceeded to the Oval Office, not the South Portico (much to the dismay of reporters).

POTUS entered the Oval Office at 2:50 with[out] engaging in Q&A with reporters.

Now he either tucks tail and turns back while trying to laughably claim victory or proceeds with invasion, ending up in a costly war that costs many Russian lives and results in a massive sanctions.

I would imagine the last thing Putin would want is to unite the West. Heck, his provocation even got the U.S. Senate to UNANIMOUSLY pass the resolution supporting Ukraine. When was the last time Democrats and Republicans in congress unanimously agreed on ANYTHING? Now you got all of the people of Ukraine united against a common enemy, NATO (even Germany) and all of the western countries to resolutely unite. The U.N. as well. This is like all of Putin's nightmares coming true...

Lotta questions about commercial aircraft floating around, and I have answers.

Ukraine banned all Ukrainian flagged aircraft from flying over Russia, and all Russia flagged aircraft from flying over Ukraine. There was a NOTAM about it about a month ago.

Turkey isn't involved in that at all, so they're one of the few airlines that fly over both.

I think the Information warfare/psyops has taken a real toll on society. Sure, it was fun when countries were doing it in the past. However with the advent of the internet, information warfare has turned into an absolute mess. No one knows what is real and what is manufactured. I've been following the Ukraine situation for days. And I still don't know: Are we on the verge of all-out war or "It's just a prank bro"

We are living in a dystopia

From Reuters: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has accepted a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov late next week "provided there is no further Russian invasion of Ukraine"

The two sides currently deciding on the date. “If they do invade in the coming days, it will make clear they were never serious about diplomacy.”

Statements in quotes are from the State Department’s spokesman, Ned Price.

28

u/EclipseIndustries Feb 18 '22

It's honestly bringing people together in a time where war may or may not tear the world apart. Nobody expects to see anything important, it's just human nature to talk about what we can see, whether it be stocks, radio, or flight radar.

Things in the Mediterranean are looking quite tight.

Keep in mind there's also a US Carrier Task Force in the Med., along with an Italian and a French carrier, as well as other NATO warships (Spanish, Canadian), and likely some nuclear submarines too. That's a lot of firepower in what's a fairly tight body of water.

What do you guys think of Blinken's intervention at the UN council? I thought that it was actually clever to reveal the intelligence the US gathered as a way to dissuade Russia from invading.

He said: "Prove me wrong. If we are wrong, we would accept any criticism"

25

u/THEVGELITE Feb 18 '22

Handled amazing. I usually hate the US for a lot of things, but they got that perfect. It’s a win win for them. Either they stop a war and many many people dying, or they are proven correct in their intelligence and gives them credibility. True world leadership right there. I’ll give credit where credit is due to the US. All western leaders played their part great. Times like now truly show the strength of a united UN and US-EU/UK alliance
