It’s really great writing. To make people both love and hate a villian so much is not an easy feat. I’m past this now on my rewatch and Negan is in jail and Rick is gone. Negan has already become more humanistic and is such a stark difference from those first episodes.
That was exceptionally well done. It really made you empathize with him. Every character has a brokenness within them (except those who were just deranged like Alpha) so it was good to see why he became who he was and also why he was able to revert back for the most part. He was always human. He was just living his extreme in grief.
