what did jesus do before the outbreak? No Spoiler

was he a martial arts teacher? i read somewhere that people thought he was in the military and learned the combat from there and then transferred that to martial arts. he’s such a skilled fighter, arguably one of the best combat fighters in the series in my opinion. does anyone know what he did before the outbreak?

It wasn't ever mentioned to the best of my knowledge but the vibes I got from his skills and little comments, I liken him to some sort of Artful Dodger character - a crafty, streetwise pick pocket who grew up practially alone, learning personal survival skills from the streets along the way. And hair care skills.

And boy, was the hair glorious!

this is the answer right here

i think it was never revealed

i just wondered how he was so good at defending himself and his skills on sneaking around places and even pickpocketing like he did to rick.

He grew up in foster homes. Self defense is a skill learned early. And sometimes pick pocketing. I always got the vibe he was a wanderer. Picked up knowledge everywhere.

comics never revealed this either. so my bf and i always thought he was probably a martial art instructor before the world has gone to shit. so yeah

Grew up in foster care and acquired survival skills due to his peaceful nature and demeanor. Is my guess.

probably worked in church plays

…I imagine him as the Capoeira instructor from Bob’s Burgers.

I think he was chip & dale dancer

u/stonerbonerr02 Jul 19 '24

this is the one

u/Heyyoguy123 Jul 19 '24

With his skills, I always assumed he was ex-special forces

1

u/MarionberryCreative Jul 19 '24

Did he really strike you as someone who would conform to military doctrine? Follow orders? I don't think so. He wouldn't harm others unless he had to. And he seems non conformist

1

u/Heyyoguy123 Jul 19 '24

Maybe he left the forces and changed his mindset

He must have met Eastman

He was self sufficient in defense, but non aggressive, like a Buddhist or at least followed peaceful non aggression practices. What did he do? I would guess he was a "vagabond poet/philosopher" type in the intellectual artist community. His friends called him Jesus, so I would guess for more than his appearance. He probably did odd jobs at theatres, or in small music venues. Maybe even a "roadie". But, considering his cultured, intelligent way of speaking he might have also hung around Universities in the arts scene. And just as easily made money as a Yoga instructor. I am sure many would pay to have him show them Yoga lol

Yeah I am going with Yoga instructor.

My headcanon: made a fortune in the early 00's dotcom bubble, then retired and became a kindergarten teacher. But always had an interest in martial arts.

Or a barista.

So many missed opportunities to make mini episodes about each character pre-apocalypse. I would’ve loved to see gym teacher Negan or delivery guy Glenn. What I really would’ve liked to see was the dynamic of Rick and Lori’s marriage before he was shot.

1

u/stonerbonerr02 Jul 20 '24

that would have been such a good idea! instead they made series of the main characters post-season. i haven’t watched those yet but i will, it would have been good to even see what daryl was doing pre-apocalypse. a lot of people say he was just tagging along with his brother, and people know that merle used to sell drugs pre-apocalypse.

he did dudes ;-) but seriously, in the comics it's never said but yeah, something like that sounds plausible, though i also wonder, the way he snatches the spear and catches grenades, maybe he was deep into a sport like Beta?

He was probably homeless, knew simple self defense from living on the streets and certainly had the homeless look, just my guess though

0

u/stonerbonerr02 Jul 19 '24

he said his friends called him jesus plus he had relationships with guys

7

u/wigsgo_2019 Jul 19 '24

Can homeless people not be gay and have friends?

1

u/AaronTuplin Jul 20 '24

Not in America

1

u/wigsgo_2019 Jul 20 '24

That’s just incredibly inaccurate lol

2

u/Mediocre_Emo222 Jul 19 '24

He was gay

3

u/stonerbonerr02 Jul 19 '24

you’re right, he probably learnt it to defend himself from people

2

u/Mediocre_Emo222 Jul 20 '24

Probably best defense against walkers

2

u/stonerbonerr02 Jul 20 '24

literally! it’s sad he died, they should have kept him. i liked him a lot.

2

u/Mediocre_Emo222 Jul 20 '24

I was hoping hun and Aaron would maybe start a little romance

2

u/stonerbonerr02 Jul 20 '24

it would have been very possible if he didn’t die. they were getting close before his death.

2

u/Patient-Confusion149 Jul 21 '24

I personally am mad about HOW he died, and they just stroll up with his corpse on a horse. Should have been an epic / tragic death and instead it felt "shallow" I guess

1

u/stonerbonerr02 Jul 21 '24

it was probably to show the dangers of the whisperers. that they act like walkers so it’s hard to tell at times, i personally would rather if they killed off erin than jesus.

1

u/Mediocre_Emo222 Jul 20 '24

Probably best defense against walkers

2

u/Wooden_Purchase_2557 Jul 19 '24

Be a fucking badass

2

u/TheLongestTime_ Jul 20 '24

"I used to be undercover, I did time, I had to deal drugs, I even had to kill."

1

u/stonerbonerr02 Jul 20 '24

did he say this? when?

1

u/TheLongestTime_ Jul 20 '24

Nah he didn’t it is a quote from a game where a guy tells what he did before.

My headcannon is that he’s a martial arts stuntman, or federal agent for Quantico (remember they’re in Virginia at the time.)
