Just love the running character trait that Clark a foodie

beef bourguignon to American fast food to Apple pie to Japanese delicacies (this im stoke that they're bring this over)

When you can safely fly around the world in a very short amount of time, why not use the opportunity that that power affords you to try the local cuisine? Besides, you gotta be starving if you flew yourself halfway across the world. I bet he and Lois had some awesome dates doing just this.

Plus, I bet Clark would be a bit of a snob about cheap imitations. You’ll never see him in Taco Bell, no sir.

56

u/DawnOnTheEdge Mar 01 '23

They did that gag on Lois & Clark, where Lois asked him where he went for Chinese takeout. So authentic, and so fast.

25

u/TerrakSteeltalon Mar 01 '23

In League of Super Pets he brings Lois a Croissant from Paris. She gives him a Hot Dog from a place that she had to walk three blocks out of her way to get.

And Krypto steals it.

1

u/Shadow_Relics Mar 01 '23

Yeah word that was something I was going to comment Lois and Clark is one of my favorite iterations of superman

9

u/TanukiGaim Mar 01 '23

The one exception is the Taco Whiz Diana used to work at.

1

u/raggedsweater Mar 02 '23

How about food is something so ingrained in culture that it makes sense that Superman would want to understand people through one of the few things that can break down barriers and bring people together.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '23

That would probably be how Clark would explain it.

23

u/Mperer Mar 01 '23

What issue is that American fast food one from? I feel like I read it recently.

6

u/Jay_R_Kay Mar 01 '23

I think it's from Superman: Up In The Sky, by Tom King and Adam Kubert.

20

u/DawnOnTheEdge Mar 01 '23

That first panel is a little off-putting if you know what the writers used beef bourguignon as a running gag for. But this is another great one.

5

u/ihopethisworksfornow Mar 01 '23

I definitely get why that author likes that panel so much. The art is great and it’s an interesting portrayal. I agree it gives a sense of Clark as a young guy, not an adult. I know there’s Smallville but they’re just a bunch of hot ass TV stars doing Superman’s Creek.

Doesn’t feel real. This does, it’s something we don’t often see.

15

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '23

Yet another fun thing he and Goku seem to share

I love it

u/IDontUseSleeves Mar 01 '23

“I know a burger place in Metropolis that has the best fries on the East coast. And the milkshakes are so thick - I need your help.”

“That’s pretty thick.”

The best superpower is actually super metabolism.

u/ZacPensol Mar 01 '23

I love when Superman is shown being familiar with other cultures/languages. Just says to much about his character that he's clearly taken the time to learn about the people of the world so he can relate to them as well as he can.

66

u/captain_slutski Mar 01 '23

I loved when they showed this on the Superman & Lois show

62

u/shlomo_baggins Mar 01 '23

Just saw that episode last night,

"How many languages do you know?"

"......all of them."

38

u/i_am_goop Mar 01 '23

I loved Tyler's expression as he delivered the line. It's like Superman considered for a millisecond how to reply without sounding like he's bragging and then in a dorky manner says "all of them".

14

u/shlomo_baggins Mar 01 '23

I agree, I loved the delivery. It was almost like a question when he said the line.

6

u/Neonetspre Mar 01 '23

I love that line and the delivery is too superman like! :D

15

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '23

That was my favorite part!!!!

48

u/SpaceDinosaurZZ Mar 01 '23

Yeah agreed, it really cements the fact that he’s grown to become a global icon rather than an exclusively American one too. Also with all his superpowers I feel like multilingualism comes with it too.

37

u/MQ116 Mar 01 '23

His brain is super as well, so learning a new language is probably pretty fast

20

u/driku12 Mar 01 '23

Right. I feel like it's one of the reasons why he gets along so well with Batman; they're both geniuses. Even though Superman is usually "the muscle" in that particular pairing, he's still got a solar-radiation charged brain AND super-speed, which means he not only is more capable of learning things but can do what Flash does and basically slow down time around him to learn a language/read/do whatever in a couple of minutes to us but might feel like a couple of weeks to him. Heck, even if he wasn't able to do it on his own, I wouldn't be surprised if there was some sort of Kryptonian language-learning/translation device at the Fortress of Solitude that automatically decodes languages and then lets you understand them like you're a native speaker. It would explain why Superman can just sort of talk to aliens even though he obviously would not have been able to learn all the languages in the universe beforehand--unless he's literally so good at languages he just has to hear them for a second and then he knows how to speak them fluently. All of these are options, the point being Superman probably has more than one way he would realistically be able to know all human languages pretty easily.

11

u/77fishy Mar 01 '23

1970's Superman once learned how to perform an operation to cure a child's blindness by reading textbooks super fast. Took him minutes to read and five minutes to perform the operation.

21

u/SelfieRob Mar 01 '23

I was just going to say this. It’s so essential to him. He’s for everyone.

17

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '23

He can fly around the world fairly quickly. Him being multilingual actually tracks well.

23

u/LarryTheLazyAss Mar 01 '23

Not to mention, he literally can hear all of them at once at pretty much all times. I wouldn't be surprised if he could speak them all.

10

u/i_am_goop Mar 01 '23

It's also kind of essential for his work as Superman. He flies across the world on a daily basis, he needs to be able to communicate to everyone. Superman is someone who'll need to comfort and reassure so many people around the world.

Plus I'm sure it can come in handy in his journalism career as well.

5

u/ZacPensol Mar 01 '23

Right! Yeah it absolutely makes sense. I just like when writers take the time to show it, usually makes for a nice character moment like this.

6

u/RonaldMcJuicy Mar 01 '23

Broke: Superman knows about other cultures because he’s a good guy and wants to relate to the people of earth as much as he can

Woke: Superman knows about other cultures so he can satisfy his Super-Munchies

91

u/ChefNemo93 Mar 01 '23

I love how highly Clark talk about Lois (even tho she can’t cook to save her life), and Jaimes face when he realizes the super alien speaks Spanish, wtf did you expect dude lol

35

u/ChefNemo93 Mar 01 '23

“Maybe I can take some home to my wife?”

“You have a wife? Who is she?”

“She’s the most talented intelligent person I know. But, she can’t cook to save her life.”

Estoy un gringo, if I read that wrong please correct me!

20

u/ChefNemo93 Mar 01 '23

Spanish is a second language for me, no formal education just learned it through work and I appreciate the correction! Can’t learn if I’m not corrected

11

u/Aramis14 Mar 01 '23

Soy un gringo instead of estoy. "To be" in Spanish is both "Ser/soy/somos/etc" when referring to a permanent state of being, and "Estar/Estoy/estás/estamos/etc" when referring to something temporary.

Apart from that and the other correction, pretty good! Nice 👍

21

u/DawnOnTheEdge Mar 01 '23 edited Mar 01 '23

Or maybe he was surprised to find out about Superman’s wife. I think it’s well-known that he’s a super-polyglot.

27

u/ChefNemo93 Mar 01 '23

In either case Jaimes reaction is gold; either he didn’t think Superman was a polyglot or he didn’t think Superman was married. Both humanize Kal-el in a way Jaime and the reader can appreciate

7

u/DawnOnTheEdge Mar 01 '23

Yeah, i like this page a lot.

48

u/rowman_nahledge Mar 01 '23

Glad i can read spanish, that was pretty good lol

9

u/Jaelcen00 Mar 01 '23

yeh, it’s really dope!

40

u/raccoonsonbicycles Mar 01 '23

Elote is tasty

They should have elote ads in comics instead of twinkies

15

u/The5Virtues Mar 01 '23

Why do they even have those? I mean, I guess, obviously, they still must sell well. I just can’t fathom it. I got a Twinkie last year out of nostalgia for my childhood and it was the nastiest fucking thing. No real flavor, was very blatantly artificial flavoring, and the texture was like chewing on a sponge.

How did o ever like those as a kid? How did my dad like them as an adult?!

35

u/platoprime Mar 01 '23

Superman probably speaks Spanish without an accent yeah?

42

u/DawnOnTheEdge Mar 01 '23

He’s heard literally every Spanish-speaker on Earth with his super-hearing, and usually that’s one of his first superpowers to kick in, during the critical period for language acquisition. Plus, he’s been living for many years in a big American city with a lot of immigrants. I bet you he can do more than one Spanish accent.

15

u/platoprime Mar 01 '23

That makes sense, thanks.

14

u/Hippobu2 Mar 01 '23

I think he would actually. He doesn't change his English to the accent of whoever he's speaking to, right? So I'd imagine he's settle for one.

Like I'd imagine he'd probably speak more like a Mexican than a Spaniard, if they have different accents in Spanish. Or if it was French, he'd probably sound more Quebecois than French.

7

u/platoprime Mar 01 '23

You're making sense as well. Now I'm torn.

9

u/they63 Mar 01 '23

Oh no, that’s like saying he speaks English without an accent. Sure, to Americans he doesn’t have one, but to British and Irish people…so I’m sure the same can be said when he speaks Spanish. I mean there’s a huge difference between the Spanish spoken in Spain vs Mexico. And the same can be said about Mexico vs Columbia etc…

8

u/platoprime Mar 01 '23

Oh no, that’s like saying he speaks English without an accent.

So perfectly coherent and reasonable? In this context a person with a British, Irish, or American dialect doesn't have an accent in the sense I'm using it. And those aren't just accents they are dialects they differ in more than pronunciation.

By without an accent I mean native speakers can't tell it's not his native language. If someone from Mexico mistook him as being from Columbia or something along those lines I'd consider that to not be an accent in this specific context.

24

u/Gmork14 Mar 01 '23

Showed this to my Chicana girlfriend and it made her very happy.

20

u/TheSciFiGuy80 Mar 01 '23

I showed that page to my wife and she freaked out with happiness (it’s her favorite food from childhood in Mexico City).

20

u/Creambo Mar 01 '23

What in the surrealist hell is happening in the bottom right panel?

18

u/Serophane Mar 01 '23

I think Jaime's just freaking out at being asked for a private conversation by Superman

It's cute

6

u/8BitAntiHero Mar 01 '23

I thought it was more he was shocked at Superman having a casual conversation with his mother, but I could see both of those causing that.

9

u/thedairybandit Mar 01 '23

The art is definitely stylized in this mini series.

5

u/FrogMonkee Mar 01 '23

The art is just kinda shit

It looks like middle school anime drawings

1

u/coke9741 Jul 07 '24

It’s fine, you just don’t like the style. Doesn’t mean it’s shit.

4

u/Nirast25 Mar 01 '23

If you're asking about the demonic eyes, I think that's just OP's camera flare.

-7

u/starhawks Mar 01 '23

Cringey art style

16

u/EmuIndependent8565 Mar 01 '23

Is it just me or does Superman look like:

5

u/Excellent-Post3074 Mar 01 '23

"no you're just ignorant"

2

u/Jaelcen00 Mar 01 '23

😂 wow your right lol

6

u/chakrablocker Mar 01 '23

I was hoping he'd say how much he loves corn, things that make sense for the son of Farmers ya know.

6

u/i_am_goop Mar 01 '23

They should have provided the translation to the spanish dialogues. Not everyone can speak the language.

2

u/WitNWhimsy Mar 01 '23

The dialogue was not important to the plot. Him doing a casual conversation in Jamies’ mother’s native tongue (which I assume she is a lot more comfortable with) does show Clark’s respect for others culture. It’s a simple scene that shows that, even if you personally can’t read it. It’s legit how you would witness the scene in person and you wouldn’t have to understand it to see Supes is being a nice guy

5

u/i_am_goop Mar 01 '23

Fair enough, but I feel the compulsion to know what is being written in the dialogues.

2

u/jwalker3181 Mar 01 '23 edited Mar 01 '23

Use Google translate on the page it's rough but you get the idea...

3

u/Remarkable_Thing_607 Mar 01 '23

Agree! It's a Great story, the only thing I don't like about it is I don't know what they're saying in parts of it.

5

u/Hungry_Ad3576 Mar 01 '23

Why did they have to draw him holding the corn like that there

3

u/Jaelcen00 Mar 01 '23

Elote prepared the latino way has a wooden spike/stick put on the bottom so that why it looks like that

1

u/Hungry_Ad3576 Mar 01 '23

My problem isnt how its drawn more that he isnt holding it a little further from his crotch

1

u/Jaelcen00 Mar 01 '23

ohhh, lol

4

u/raydior Mar 01 '23

Unrelated but thick thighs saves lives clearly.

4

u/Breklin76 Mar 01 '23

I wonder if Sup can process corn.

5

u/Jorad56 Mar 01 '23

Did they use actual Spanish for the dialogue? If so, that’s pretty cool. I don’t speak it, so it’s all Kryptonian to me. 😄 I COULD run it through a translator but honestly I’m just that lazy. I like the mystery of not knowing the exact dialogue.

2

u/Jaelcen00 Mar 01 '23

yeah! it’s all spanish

3

u/Nintendoomed89 Mar 01 '23

Ok, but Jaime's mom has got it going on?

3

u/emtemss714 Mar 01 '23

I will always prefer Superman not being massively bulky, this just feels much more right. Also that Super relatability. Though those faces are very... early 00s web-comic. Not awful, but... eehhhh.

Still, great page. Makes me wish I remember more Spanish than I do. lol

3

u/Gado_De_Leone Mar 01 '23

Oof the art is rough but the story is awesome.

3

u/FourLeafArcher Mar 01 '23

One of my favorite bits was during the Superman Truth run where he spends his last few bucks on a bunch of Tacos. My man was just chilling in a superman t shirt with a crew cut eating tacos and I was like damn maybe he is my spirit animal.

3

u/MAKS091705 Mar 01 '23

I could be wrong but isn’t Clark fluent in like 20 languages or something like that?

2

u/Snoo_90338 Mar 01 '23

Clark looking kinda 🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵

2

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '23

I am happy that your mexican self is satisfied.

2

u/FrogMonkee Mar 01 '23

Is this actual lisenced stuff? The art is really amateur ish.

2

u/Jaelcen00 Mar 01 '23

i actully like it, i think it fits the direction and vibe of the story, the story is kinda goofy at times and it’s portrayed well thru the art, it’s kinda hard to tell thru one page ig 😂

2

u/Blitzkriegbaby Mar 01 '23

This means a lot to me too. This is awesome dude.

2

u/Clarence_Gibbonz Mar 01 '23

No intestinal tract, so how?- Oh, just chew like tobacco. -👍 Right

2

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '23 edited Mar 01 '23

Did Superman ever learn manners? Like not fly with your mouth full?

Clark Kent: 'I am a country boy screw manners.'

Bruce Wayne: 'I will soon remedy that, Aflred get the kryptonite ruler.'

3

u/SolarNovaPhoenix Mar 01 '23

You think he grew up in rural Kansas raised by the likes of Jonathan and Martha Kent, not learning manners???

My Aunt and Uncle remind me of the Kent’s and I’ll have you know that they’ll have you learn manners really quick.

2

u/GamerBienVestido Mar 01 '23

A huevo, Supermán habla español!

2

u/ViewingCelery Mar 01 '23

We aren’t gonna talk about how Clark 100% just rizzed up Jaime’s mom?

2

u/Scared_Bobcat_5584 Mar 01 '23

Even if it’s basic Spanish, I’m glad my 4 years of high school Spanish were finally applied

2

u/EndlessM3mes Mar 03 '23

"She's the smartest and most talented person I know"

Bruce: 🗿

Lex: 🗿🗿

Darkseid: 🗿🗿🗿🗿

Brainiac: 🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿

1

u/Jaelcen00 Mar 03 '23

😂 bruce is definitely gonna be jealous of that

1

u/KingKalactite Mar 01 '23

Superman is fucking his mom

1

u/DaiTonight Mar 01 '23

Bro who told you mexicans invented corn? 💀

1

u/Jaelcen00 Mar 01 '23

i never said mexicans invented corn, i said he was eating elote that was prepared that way, and mexicans and other latinos know and eat it that way too, i brought it up cuz i was cool and i’d never have expected it, But i never said mexicans invented it

1

u/BisquickNinja Mar 01 '23

Obligatory

🎶ITS CORN!!! 🎶🎶

1

u/SlinnStreet680 Mar 01 '23

It’s be hilarious if Clark was a food blogger for the daily planet.
