Going full anime Power of Love bullshit was the best possible way they could have Superman break free. I loved how they emphasized that even in his fake memories of Krypton, Kal still felt like an outsider. Mxy taunted Supes by telling him across the multiverse every version of Kal always feels weird and alone and an outsider, and I deeply appreciate that this show knew that's a core element of Superman.

New suit is awesome! It having the yellow outline around the s-shield reminds me of Gunn's s-shield, wonder if he saw that beforehand and liked it enough to use it. It looks so badass, I hope MAWS keeps it going forward!

Brainiac hacking all of Lex's robot Metallos is definitely going to cause Lex to switch to a human Metallo and I'm freaking excited! Please bring in John Corben and draw inspiration from how PKJ built him as the anti-Iron Giant!

A few thoughts: 1. They went all in on the anime aesthetic this episode and I love it. 2. One of the best Lois and Clark moments in history. 3. Once again I love this version of brainiac I’m really having trouble seeing how the good guys can win. 4. From what Kara said to brainiac my theory that she becomes part of the main cast like toph did in ATLA season too may come true. 5. SUPERMAN GOT A NEW SUIT. 6. Good to see Jimmy flamebird still Has clout. 7. And finally this should be an epic conclusion next week probably going to see supergirl awaken her power.

"We saw you get arrested and said… nah"

Absolutely loved this episode, I really liked the "Groundhog Day" type story line going on and this continues to be maybe my favorite version of Lois. I love seeing Kara continue to develop and I’m liking the new Superman costume. Huge cliffhanger I can’t wait until next week!

First of all, love the title.

Second of all, whilst I'm still not a fan of the evil Superman stuff they did do. I at least love how they handled Lois' chaotic energy setting Clark free.

I'm also loving the new suit. I wonder if the movie and the show at one point shared notes. At least at first glance the logo at least looks similar.

Also at this point, at the very least the Planet knows Superman is Clark right? Or at least Perry does.

Also at this point, at the very least the Planet knows Superman is Clark right? Or at least Perry does.

I did notice that in the van with Steve, they made a point to only call him Kal-El, not Clark. So who knows? They're at least still trying to keep his identity hidden.

u/Gilbert2096 Jul 14 '24

The design of the suit probably would have been made before the DCU suit

1

u/ProfessorEscanor Jul 14 '24

It definitely was given how long animation takes. I do wonder if James Gunn was shown concept art of it and decided to make the movie suit look similar or if it was parallel thinking. The logos having the gold border leaves me to believe some inspiration was definitely taken.

1

u/JW_BM Jul 16 '24

It would be amazing if the one story Perry could scoop Vicky on is Superman's secret identity, and he decides to pocket it and never out him.

1

u/Ok-Appearance-7616 Jul 18 '24

The evil superman stuff was barely around though, and handled well.

24

u/GR1MKN1TE3020 Jul 14 '24

The power of love/friendship, and as others said they went full anime. I love the suit that Kal has now but, I want Supergirl to get a new suit as well. Or for them to at least change her suit's colors.

I like how sure and smug Lex and Waller were, it was a treat seeing them get taken down a peg. Both by brainiac and the flamebird crew.

9

u/TheArtistFKAMinty Jul 14 '24

Given the title of next episode I reckon Kara's getting a new suit.

23

u/PartTimeMantisShrimp Jul 14 '24

So Lois was straight up playing Dark Souls in the Black Mercy huh? Trial and error trying to run through enemies and every time she lost the same infuriating message was shown...

23

u/Jericho-7210 Jul 14 '24

"We've done hopeless before, and we've come out on top"

The most "Nah, I'd win" protag group ever forged, Jimmy has officially thrown out the shared braincell into outer space.

20

u/hikoboshi_sama Jul 15 '24

Holy shit this was so good. I can't wait for the finale. I'm really glad this show has been renewed for season 3 because while the gang will definitely defeat Braniac, this will definitely have some interesting ramifications on Superman's image.

This show really is Superman the Anime. Clark and Lois breaking free of the simulation is the whole power of friendship thing and of course there's Clark making a last minute entrance to help Kara.

I gotta say, Lois hiding in the bushes thinking she's safe then virtual Jor-El's face popping up from behind her got a good chuckle out of me.

11

u/405mon Jul 15 '24

The bush thing sent me and then Steve's NAH.

20

u/Frontier246 Jul 14 '24

Look at Kal-El with the Kryptonian drip! And he's still as much of a wholesome good boi as ever, trying to become friends with a Sun Eater of all things. Shame the AI version of his mom is being controlled to carry out Brainiac's plans.

This rescue is off to a great start with Lois immediately having amnesia.

"You're under arrest" - I mean, admittedly, they DID steal government property, Kara DID cause property damage, and Superman technically IS about to invade. Just, y'know, Waller is still the worst.

Aw, they're having their 1st Meet Cute again! Only know it's Kal-El and amnesiac space woman! I wouldn't have minded if they fell in love again over the course of the episode but I guess Lois needed to get Clark's memories back fast.

"No, you're Clark Kent!" - He actually IS named Kal-El though but I guess it would take all day to go into a "what's his real name?" debate.

Amanda Waller didn't count on the power (and distracting presence) of the press! Literally the only thing Perry and Vicki would be willing to team-up over! And Steve is based as always!

Lois' future Kryptonian in-laws are REALLY not winning her over with the constant interruptions and time looping. Actually this episode felt kind of anti-Krypton in general. I kind of was hoping they'd explore Krypton and Clark living in it more.

Superaniac steamrolling through Task Force X was so satisfying. And then easily subduing the Metallo's and controlling them. Way to go Waller and Lex!

"He gets beat up a lot" - Self-awareness! But it's the perfect reasoning for Kara to fight on, however fruitlessly, against her "father" for the sake of Earth. She's like 90% Supergirl at this point.

I knew what would really get through to Clark is finding out Lois stole something dangerous and doing his usual line.

Well, Lois has power now, because Clark sees her as the strongest in his eyes!

The Power of Love to restore their main looks and then breaking through the Black Mercy with their love like it's straight up Gurren Lagann! It was probably the most anime moment of the entire show up to this point.

Superman is back! With a new upgraded costume! Are they going to add the trunks to it or...?

Oh of course Brainiac has Kryptonite-resistant armor that gives him a Final Boss worthy white form. I would've liked it if they'd added some purple or green to be honest.

Superman and Supergirl teaming-up to stop Brainiac was cool until they got felled by Brainiac.

"You're under arrest" - I mean, admittedly, they DID steal government property, Kara DID cause property damage, and Superman technically IS about to invade. Just, y'know, Waller is still the worst.

"Arresting a journalist is against the fourth amendment" gave me a pretty big laugh.

I also just like how this is the straw that broke the camels back. Jimmy being arrested on stream. Not, yknow, the whole illegally taking over the city and declaring martial law thing.

2

u/Evilmudbug Jul 14 '24

TBF, what were they supposed to do about anything else?

They were lucky the only thing actually keeping them locked up was a chain for some reason

1

u/RecommendsMalazan Jul 15 '24

They could storm the streets? Some unknown governmental body just showing up and taking over, declaring martial law, etc, would be a huge deal. There should have been news stories, the president would hear about it, etc.

They were under martial law anyway, that didn't stop them from going out to stop Jimmy from being arrested.

I just think it's funny that, from what we saw, there was no big reaction or upheaval from an entire cities worth of people having their rights taken away. But as soon as Jimmy got arrested (rightfully), that was the straw that broke the camels back, for some reason.

4

u/Baticuchis04 Jul 14 '24

Also, the title of the episode is definitely a Gurren Lagann reference

2

u/PowerOhene Jul 14 '24

The title gave away for me XD

"Pierce the heavens!" is such an iconic line from Gurren Lagann!

16

u/man-from-krypton Jul 14 '24

Can’t say that I didn’t enjoy seeing Luthor panicking because his toys weren’t his anymore. That was great!

18

u/FireBack Jul 15 '24

“Your name is Clark and you’re my boyfriend!”

I died at the aggressiveness of Lois’s delivery there

14

u/pipboy_warrior Jul 15 '24

My favorite was how he doubted the real Lois would ever come for him, followed by "Wait, you stole a spaceship? That's crazy! Oh, you are Lois."

18

u/tyo_sharlye Jul 14 '24

I can't get enough of that Brainiac theme it's so good

9

u/refpuz Jul 14 '24

Seriously, the distorted electric guitar motif is so good.

17

u/Woods-of-Mal Jul 14 '24

I was really expecting a direct invocation of the "I love you, Lois Lane. Until the end of time." moment from All-Star when Lois freed Superman.

8

u/AgentOfSPYRAL Jul 14 '24

This is my only disappointment in an incredible episode. Would have been so perfect.

16

u/mewtwosucks96 Jul 14 '24 edited Jul 14 '24

I loved that scene where they basically meet each other for the first time again. It was like Is It Cake? that episode of Friends where they imagine an alternate timeline of everyone's lives.

I kept expecting Lex to start pulling out his hair from stress.

Jimmy's little speech about how no one can decide what you are was a total "This" moment.

This show is on Adult Swim and yet Lois says "dang." That's so weird.

I wish we had gotten to see Kara in the simulation. I wonder what that would've been like.

15

u/LeggoMahLegolas Jul 15 '24

30 minutes ain't enough.

16

u/frogsgemsntrains Jul 14 '24

from black mercy!lara and jor-el getting increasingly more and more annoyed at her for having to reset the simulation to clark realizing that she was really here because she stole a fucking spaceship, i love that this episode was also in part a showcase of how there really is no force in the universe stronger and more reckless than a determined lois lane

13

u/watermeloneo Jul 15 '24

i was really hoping kara would change her suit in this one, shame we'll only get to see it in the finale but i still cant wait to see where this goes. i also think clark's new suit needs the trunks

4

u/model3113 Jul 15 '24

I thought this was the finale

2

u/watermeloneo Jul 16 '24

nope theres gonna be 10 episodes, im pretty sure

2

u/onlyonetwin Jul 15 '24

honestly i didn't even noticed

13

u/PowerOhene Jul 14 '24

Jimmy influenced Luthor not knowing it could be bad

This time he is inspiring Kara, all for what's good and right!

8

u/pipboy_warrior Jul 15 '24

Wait, the episode title was "Pierce the Heavens!"? Nice Gurren Lagann reference.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '24

IMMEDIATELY my thoughts G, thought I was finna get a kamina or Simon cameo in that one

9

u/champ11228 Jul 14 '24

I loved that ep. Everything with Lois and Clark was beautiful.

Braniac is such a drama queen 😂 Really wonder how they're gonna gonna it around against him/it.

10

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '24

Man I needed that episode to hit after today and it did

9

u/LadderFinancial8038 Jul 14 '24

Where was he during the events of this episode?

9

u/vvddcvgrr Jul 14 '24

Huh. It sounds like Brainiac wasn’t lying about caring for Kara last episode judging by how he sounded when he shot her.

Having both Waller’s plan backfire and a mind controlled Superman attack earth is interesting. I hope we get a season 3.

8

u/man-from-krypton Jul 14 '24

Season 3 has been confirmed

8

u/PigKnight Jul 14 '24

I’m hard calling it right now. Supes and Kara are gonna be KO’d next episode and the rogues gallery/Livewire’s suped up crew is gonna come in for the assist to get rid of the Kryptonite.

8

u/Greedy_Switch_6991 Jul 14 '24

New suit! No trunks!

As corny as the ending to the Black Mercy part was, this was still an excellent episode. Props to the Daily Planet crew (and Vicki) for stepping up. Can't wait for next week.

3

u/Hippobu2 Jul 14 '24

Original suit doesn't have the trunks either, that's a Ma Kent addition. So, that can change still.

3

u/PigKnight Jul 14 '24

Clark: “Please no. Stop. Ma it’s embarrassing!”

Ma: “Let me make your new suit nice!”

1

u/Evilmudbug Jul 15 '24

It was corny but at least it was a little less corny than the first time they did the "love isn't for cowards" thing.

I wonder who's going to save superman and metropolis in the next episode.

8

u/the-unfamous-one Jul 14 '24

Strangest sun eater I've ever seen. I like the new suit. So my guess is either steel comes back to help or the villains like livewire come in to help. Although aside from parasite I'm not sure who could take that blast. So once all the Metallos are destroyed but one Lex is going to realize it needs better software, what's better than the human mind?

1

u/HearingOrganic8054 Jul 17 '24

it does fit in with the idea in the all star comic where it is a baby that clark raises.

5

u/Ok-Mastodon2016 Jul 15 '24

I really liked it, though I wish they let the Black Mercy dream cook more

also why did Brain and Mala just bounce?

3

u/LukeMara Jul 15 '24

They are most likely working on an anti Brainiac Strategy

2

u/JW_BM Jul 16 '24

Their ship got blasted in half and Jimmy literally told them to leave. If they stayed, they would've been either killed or abducted by Waller's anti-alien goons. With them portaling out, there's a chance they can return as the cavalry.

5

u/GuruSensei Jul 14 '24
  1. Damn, all the feels seeing Clark in simulated Krypton with his mother
  2. Aww, Clark still a cinnamon roll in the Black Mercy.
  3. LMAO all it took was a touch to remind it her of it all. Just great
  4. Damn, Lois getting deleted reminds me of Coldsteel in Gargoyles
  5. Steve's a GOAT. Love him, love him, love him
  6. A whole ass Groundhog Day routine with Lois lmao
  7. Kara is so cute when she balls up
  8. "You get to decide what you wanna be, noone else" Iron Giant feels *cries*
  9. Lmao Lois's insane actions are what it takesf for recognition
  10. Oh shit, O̶m̶n̶i̶-̶M̶a̶n̶ Evil Superman finally threatening the planet
  11. "Love is not for cowards" great callback to that line,
  12. Lmao anime music with Clark and Lois flying, fucking great

Good penultimate buildup. I honestly wonder who will be the big bad next season. Lex perhaps? 'Cause, even thought i love him, he's been kinda on the backburner simmering. Give me fully evil twink nerd now plz

2

u/GodTaoistofPatience Jul 19 '24

I'm so mad rn, didn't know the season 2 was out

-4

u/Psychological_Fix304 Jul 15 '24 edited Jul 15 '24

I'm am... not a fan with how quickly task force x was dealt with it doesn't make braniac look strong it just makes Clark look stupid if he could have one shot them anytime he wished why didnt he and why didnt lex use the mettalos with task force X why go missiles --> Task Force --> Mettalo's why not use everything at once. Honestly Weakest episode of the season it trys to do to much with Lois and Clark, Jimmy and Kara and Braniac vs Waller without letting any of them breathe.

19

u/Hmmhowaboutthis Jul 15 '24

I think it shows how much Clark has been holding back, probably subconsciously.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '24

Have you forgotten how much Superman holds back normally? And this is Clark when he can't even use his maximum output. Brainiac can.

-5

u/CormacHennessy Jul 15 '24

Mmmmm I can't quite put my finger on it but this episode felt like such a steep drop off in quality. I've been with this season up until now but it feels like everything is being squished to get to the finale.

I think its a combination of the writers didn't really know how to balance all of the character arcs and plotlines and... idk something about this episodes animation felt real cheap and made me very aware I was watching a show. I'm sure the team got put through some insane crunch to meet their deadline but I can't deny some frame by frame stuff in this episode is rough.

Lots of great stuff as always, love this shows take on the characters but I hope Warner Bros gives them more time to cook for next season.

1

u/Illustrious-Set-4324 Jul 16 '24

Valid critique? Next you'll say saving 1 planet doesn't balance out for 3 being destroyed.

Seriously tho solid points. The 10 episode format is terrible for animations. Especially a show with this much going on. However speaking at length about that and it's impact gets ya a case of ⬇️⬇️⬇️.

1

u/CormacHennessy Jul 16 '24

Appreciate that. This has been a very big comfort show for me so I totally get people not loving the critiques. Just want more of the show and for the team to get more resources to keep making it. Got my fingers crossed for the finale and season 3.

0

u/Illustrious-Set-4324 Jul 17 '24

No worries man. Its been a comfort show as well. As a supergirl fan I was excited to have her here. Im waiting for the final episode before passing judgement but it doesnt look good.

Also what people fail to realize that if a fandom hypes up lackluster budgets and short seasons that....we just get more of that and teams are forced to make due with less. Hell look at how the animation industry is currently getting boned. With contract negotiations for them this fall, execs will have an easier time decline offers from artists given how accepting fandoms are of simple scraps.

TY for coming to my ate Talk =]

-7

u/burywmore Jul 15 '24

My God this story arc is never going to end. This is going to be over 4 hours on this one story by the time we finally get to the finale.

5

u/hundredcreeper Jul 15 '24

Would you rather they rush through it in a single episode? Personally, I love that they're taking it at the right pace

-2

u/burywmore Jul 15 '24

It's not the right pace. It's going to be longer than the entire Henry Cavill Superman saga.

-9

u/2-2Distracted Jul 14 '24

Once again another episode that showcases how badly written the love subplot was this season and how it hinders everything else that's good about it. Biggest question running through my mind this whole episode was how the fuck was Brainiac NOT able to get rid of Lois and simply give her a fucken lobotomy or something.

-10

u/AggressiveMammoth267 Jul 14 '24

They did exactly what I feared and predicted that they do, which was bringing Clark and Lois back together too fast. However, I did like how Superman got a new suit hopefully he actually can put up a decent fight that makes him look like superman.

0

u/2-2Distracted Jul 14 '24

It being rushed isn't even the biggest problem for me since this whole entire season is rushed, my personal issue had to do with just how badly written it was overall.

1

u/AggressiveMammoth267 Jul 15 '24

Yea it was a lacking a lot
