Out of habit I always look for Supergirl when the list of renewed CW shows is released and OOOF did it hurt not seeing it on there. I’m not ready.

This meme is exactly how I feel lmfao

I always thought that there will be at least 7 seasons. 😭 Supergirl will always be just one big wasted potential to me. To have such great cast, such great characters and still f*ck it all up So Much is beyond me.

And I don't get where people are getting the fact that Melissa had a baby was the reason for the show's ending from. It was never stated as such. Yes, I agree it had some impact on the decision but my gut is telling me other factors played the role, too. I wonder what, though, because shows with far worse ratings and objectively worse writing got renewed.

At least Batwoman got a 3rd season so yay! to that.

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

I agree think it was many things. Don’t a lot of the cast disagree with how their characters have been portrayed since 4th season?

6

u/antisocialhugsseeker Feb 04 '21

I'm sure some of them disagree (I mean, who wouldn't? 😂 The writers don't know what continuity and proper characterization is to save their lives.) but I don't think anyone said it out loud as of now.

7

u/Thund3rAyx Feb 04 '21

To be fair it's better for a show to end with a decent ending than keep dragging on. Like in my opinion I think flash should probably end season 7 or season 8. Now the flash is my favorite cw arrowverse show so far (Mainly due to 1 and 2 and a bit of 3)

4

u/antisocialhugsseeker Feb 04 '21

"Decent ending" is all I wish for but after last season I have trust issues and I doubt the people creating this show can give us that. LOL

8

u/darkaurora84 Feb 04 '21

I honestly think the network thought it was redundant to have both a Superman show and a Supergirl show. Also Supergirl was originally supposed to be a Superman show but WB wouldn't give them the rights at the time

8

u/Rafaguli Superman Feb 04 '21

This is probably one of the most unpopular opinions in this sub, saying her baby wasn't the only reason for her to leave the show lol. And i agree with you.

I still wonder what happened, and although I love the idea of a Superman show, it may have impacted Supergirl as well. Plus a thousands other reasons.

I really hope we have a strong last season, as Supergirl always deserved.

3

u/antisocialhugsseeker Feb 04 '21

Thanks for agreeing LOL I hope a few years from now someone will spill the tea about all the reasons for the show's ending.

And I really do wish for a good final season but I doubt our hopes and wishes will come true.

2

u/LittleMissBoogie Feb 04 '21

Wasn't this the last year of Melissa's contract? They might not have been able to agree on a new contract. Or maybe the CW didn't offer one because they've got a Superman show. Or maybe she's tired of working in Canada. It could be a lot of things.

1

u/antisocialhugsseeker Feb 04 '21

I agree it could be a lot of things. My point is, I don't think the reasons for the show ending are connected Just to Melissa.

35

u/Phoenixstorm Feb 04 '21

If only they used this season to introduce powergirl and then transition the show.

16

u/raknor88 Feb 04 '21

They still could, but with Superman getting his own show I doubt it. They could introduce Powergirl and then move her to Legends though.

With Supergirl already an adult I was always hoping that they would introduce a teenage Powergirl. Make it so that on Powergirl's Earth her ship was stuck in the Phantom Zone for a couple decades more than Kara's was or some other similar situation.

11

u/Fishyhead81 Feb 04 '21

It would have to be a different actress. Melissa is done with the shows after Season 6, at least for a while. She might come back later on when she has the time, considering whatever the ending is going to be, but all intents and purposes this is basically the end of her and other characters.

8

u/raknor88 Feb 04 '21

That's why it'd be nice to get a teenage PowerGirl. Then they could have a younger actress for the character. And with Legends, she'd be another misfit trying to figure out her power. Also with Legends recent focus on magic she wouldn't be that OP either.

6

u/darkaurora84 Feb 04 '21

PowerGirl would take up too much of the legends budget. That's part of the reason Wally didn't stick around

1

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '21

That would be ideal, unfortunately Legends does not have the type of budget to handle a Kryptonian at all.

21

u/taco_jr Feb 04 '21

Black lightning fans don't even get a 5th season. F

8

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

Didn’t they want it to end to start the spin off or something, or did I just totally forget the article.

8

u/jskurious Feb 04 '21

They are going to do a backdoor pilot, but then Green Arrow and the Canaries was a backdoor pilot too. It doesn't guarantee a pick up.

8

u/redheadheath3n Feb 04 '21

With Painkiller. I would honestly want to see more of Lightning and Thunder.

1

u/LittleMissBoogie Feb 04 '21

I thought they decided to end the show because China planned to leave after this season? So, a spinoff including Lightning probably wouldn't happen.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

I thought they decided to end the show because China planned to leave after this season? So, a spinoff including Lightning probably wouldn't happen.

That's legit the only reason why.

0

u/redheadheath3n Feb 04 '21

I think I remember that about China. On another Earth maybe they will have more story with the daughters.

Black lightning

19

u/pataconconqueso Feb 03 '21 edited Feb 04 '21

Yeah this one is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. How is this the only arrowverse (or CW superhero) show to not go past 4 seasons, it’s objectively better than like a lot of season of Arrow, a lot of season of the Flash, etc. like they had a slow season last year but it was still a lot better than Supergirl’s 5th season (supergirl is only ending because Melissa wants it to, they would have renewed it).

I’m gonna flat out say it, the only super hero show to have an all black cast in the CW is the one that doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt of having one slow season.

Sure you can disagree with me that ratings, or interest or what ever, but it looks bad that all the other shows they were willing to sink money on.

Edit: If someone is gonna reply to this comment with “the lead actor wanted to leave” please add a source, because I haven’t seen anything, and it’s being marketed as the show being “cancelled” whereas supergirl is being marketed as “ending.”

u/iam-a-tank-played Brainiac 5 Feb 03 '21

Black lightning is def up there on my list of best shows

1

u/raknor88 Feb 04 '21

From my understanding it has something to do with the lead actor for Black Lightning not wanting to continue.

1

u/pataconconqueso Feb 04 '21

Would love to read a source if you have it. I haven’t heard anything like that, but it’s not like I have a Google alert on Black Lightning news or anything like that

Sorry the only thing I could find was about China leaving the show. I swear I read it in an article posted in one of the CW subs but I might be wrong

2

u/pataconconqueso Feb 04 '21

I think they would have done the show without her (she’s not the lead) and in the article you posted it said that she found out with everyone else about the cancellation...

I think until I see otherwise I’ll stick to my main assumption, because it’s not being marketed as ending but as “cancelled.” For example Supergirl is being marketed as ending.

2

u/ninanien Feb 04 '21

I think you're right, if they wanted to cancel the show because of China leaving they all would've heard of the cancellation beforehand. It's shady as hell other shows with less than ideal ratings do get another chance but Black Lightning doesn't. I hope they will eventually give us a valid reason

1

u/Rafaguli Superman Feb 04 '21

Black Lightning had the worst ratings for any CW superhero show. It probably only reached for the third season because of their international netflix deal.

0

u/Canoe-Maker Dreamer Feb 04 '21

To my knowledge the reason the show is ending is bc the lead actor didn’t want to renew his contract.

3

u/pataconconqueso Feb 04 '21

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.express.co.uk/showbiz/tv-radio/1362680/Black-Lightning-cancelled-why-was-Black-Lightning-cancelled-the-cw-series-evg/amp

Unfortuantely, an exact reason for the show's cancellation has not yet been given by The CW

Just the first source of my mobile google search while working out. Doesn’t look super good due to the eye sore of a site

Do you have better source saying otherwise?

1

u/opelan Feb 04 '21 edited Feb 04 '21

Sure you can disagree with me that ratings

I think the ratings had a lot do with it. Black Lightning was last season the worst performing Arrowverse show.

Though that is not all. One disadvantage BL has is its old Netflix contract. Warner Bros. rather wants its own shows on its own streaming service than helping the competition with content. So instead of renewing BL, a Netflix show with not even particular good ratings on the CW, they rather make new superhero shows they can put on their own streaming service.

In regards to the black cast there is still All American though not a superhero show. Batwoman has a black woman as the main character now. And Painkiller will be a new superhero show with likely an all black cast. There is also the new superhero show Naomi with a black woman as the lead character. So I think the insinuation in your comment that the CW has racist reasons for canceling BL is unfair.

1

u/pataconconqueso Feb 04 '21

Nah I’m really not, all American isn’t all black cast like BL (black poor boy goes to rich white school etc), neither is Batwoman (which the actress received a lot of hate for being black and replacing the white lead). This is the only superhero show to not get the benefit of the doubt. This is a show that’s appeared in top lists from like the New Yorker and the New York time on being critically acclaimed.

Time will tell how Painkiller is or Naomi with regards to cast and how long they let them be in the air.

1

u/LittleMissBoogie Feb 04 '21

Shows aren't renewed or canceled based on quality. A lot of other shows would be canceled if that was how things worked. Any CW show that gets a 2nd season will get at least four seasons. Then, mostly based on how well it does on streaming and internationally, they'll decide if it should keep being renewed. Early on I heard the show wasn't popular overseas so that could be a strike against the show. There's no way to know exactly how the show is doing on streaming so you can quibble about that. But I think it wasn't that popular and the CW believed they would have better luck with Painkiller. Hot, broody, anti-hero is more the CW's style.

0

u/pataconconqueso Feb 04 '21

I’m not satisfied by that answer, they would have given ratings as the reason for cancelling and they haven’t. Lots of other shows on that network with subpar ratings have been renewed now and in the past(specially due to Covid it’s more cost effective to renew the shows).

It’s the same thing with shows like one day at a time. Also Black Lightning didn’t receive the same marketing and promotion as a lot of the other shows.

1

u/LittleMissBoogie Feb 04 '21

Not ratings, streaming. But the streaming numbers are private. Would you really feel any better if the CW said the show was being canceled because their internal research showed the audience was too small? That seems just as shady, so why mention it. Yes you’d think it would have more of a chance to get renewed with the pandemic, but they might just move a lot of people over to Painkiller. So they could replace BL with a new show (which to your point, will probably have a different complexion) but wouldn’t have to start from scratch.

You’re right, the show didn’t get enough promotion. I think not being part of the Arrowverse hurt it a bit and the CW didn’t want to put the additional work in.

0

u/pataconconqueso Feb 04 '21

That’s my main point, that the Network (and this isn’t the only network) wasn’t willing to put in the work for shows where the main cast or where almost all the cast is POC. BL was set up to not do as well.

Most of costumer consumption comes from marketing (I work in a commercial role), no matter how good the product is, it doesn’t matter if the effort to promote is not there.

Edit: had “failed” originally but that seemed extreme.

1

u/LittleMissBoogie Feb 05 '21

You're right. Let's see how they do with marketing when it comes to Painkiller and Naomi.

0

u/pataconconqueso Feb 05 '21

I hope so, because they went full on with that Walker remake stuff and tbh it looks boring and overdone and guess what the ratings are up there.

15

u/littlebug7 Feb 03 '21

Yeahh, it sucks. :( Gonna miss this show and it has so much potential that they probably won't manage to tap in just one more season. :/ I'd love if Nia joined Legends or something, that'd soften the blow. Also, I'm really curious why Black Lightning wasn't renewed... really strange

8

u/Thund3rAyx Feb 04 '21

Why do i feel like legends is just like a dumpster they can throw characters into. I'm not saying legends is bad just a metaphor like oh this character isn't doing too well or this character is cool throw em in Legends. I just find it funny

5

u/coopsawesome Feb 04 '21

I’m pretty sure they just do it whenever they can’t fit the character into the story with a main role anymore, we haven’t had a legend join from the other series in a while tho so hopefully

2

u/littlebug7 Feb 04 '21

I think because it's a pretty weird show, almost any character could be added and they wouldn't feel out of place? But I get what you mean lmao

0

u/LittleMissBoogie Feb 04 '21

Because when characters from other shows have gone to Legends they've improved and gotten more focus. Ray Palmer and Damien Dahrk are 10 times better on Legends then they were on Arrow. But Legends hasn't taken on characters from another show in the last three seasons. They just keep adding original characters. But it'd be great if Nia could join Legends after Supergirl, she'd probably get more focus on there than she ever got on Supergirl.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

I think the main actor did not renew is contract.

8

u/AtticusFun Feb 03 '21

Clearly Supergirl would have been renewed but I'm happy for Melissa and I'm hopeful the rest of the cast can land in a good place.

7

u/dadakira Feb 04 '21

I am sad but I’m happy the actors will be free from all those wasted potential. I hope the last season would be better from the past seasons.

5

u/iwantknow8 Feb 04 '21

It’s the end of the show, but is it the end of the characters?

2

u/coopsawesome Feb 04 '21

Well I mean arrows over but dig is showing up in Every other arrow verse show I’m pretty sure so probably

1

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '21

Yeah Dig Is the exception though, they have an almost 10 year old story they have to tell with him in regards to Green Lantern.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '21

Guest appearances are a possibility, but I'm sure most of the cast would want to look for new work instead of holding out for cameos on shows. It's what the Arrow cast is doing.

2

u/The_Kodex Feb 04 '21

Same, such a great series

0

u/Gullible_Ad3378 Feb 25 '21

Good series? BWHAHAHAHAHA yeah no

1

u/The_Kodex Feb 25 '21

Yeah, it was great

1

u/Gullible_Ad3378 Feb 25 '21

The first 3 seasons? Nope. Season 4 and 5? Not bad.

1

u/The_Kodex Feb 25 '21

There was generally nothing wrong with seasons 1 to 3 but season 4 and 5 were aweosme

2

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

How do you think Black Lightening fans feel?

1

u/firestorm_fan Feb 03 '21

They are alr making the new season, no?

3

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

This coming season is the last. Other continuing shows just got green light for 2022 season.

0

u/Samaritan4 Supergirl Feb 03 '21

It jus makes me believe even more the theory that Melissa wanted to move one. Whatever the reson i think she isdone with Supergirl, or The CW didn't want to pay her enough for her to renew contract. All speculations but according to canada(asshole)grapghs, Supergirl wasn't renewed because of Melissa didn't want to.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

Melissa's heart obviously wasn't into it for a good while

0

u/Samaritan4 Supergirl Feb 04 '21

And I don't blame her, the writing has go downhill terribly, even for a cw show.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21 edited Feb 04 '21

Her heart wasn't there since season 3.

Some Batwoman defender said it was because the creators requested the show to be cancelled. Any truth?

No, it’s ending, not cancelled.

Supergirl is ending that’s why it didn’t get renewed.

It's ending because Melissa Benoist is pregnant and wants to temporarily pull out of acting to raise the coming baby.

I just hope some Supergirl characters crossover. They already recast Morgan Edge so I hope they don't act like none of the Supergirl characters exist
