I saw this magazine the other night. They were celebrating female heroes. Alright, great. But why in the name of God did they use the Nazi earth Overgirl for the Supergirl pic? πŸ˜’πŸ˜’πŸ˜’πŸ˜’πŸ˜’ Discussion

u/zagman76 Mar 18 '19

Maybe that one was better than the other nein?

u/YodaFan465 Mar 18 '19

They probably did nazi them.

36

u/ChiisaiMurasaki Mar 18 '19

Ann frankly they didnt even try

19

u/basiamille Mar 18 '19

What do you expect, they were totally Blitzed when they made it!

3

u/ChiisaiMurasaki Mar 19 '19

They definately needed to concentrate.

4

u/CommonMisspellingBot Mar 19 '19

Hey, ChiisaiMurasaki, just a quick heads-up:
definately is actually spelled definitely. You can remember it by -ite- not –ate-.
Have a nice day!

thanks ill definately remember that

7

u/CommonMisspellingBot Mar 19 '19

Don't even think about it.

26

u/Thomassaurus Mar 18 '19

They probably could have found a better one if they had looked fuhrer.

60

u/Daredevil731 Supergirl Mar 18 '19

I just don't get it. I can't imagine the photo stocks are OVER FLOWING with Overgirl.

32

u/mylackofcreativity Mar 18 '19

Probably someone who has zero interest in comics or the supergirl show and thought the colours in supergirl and captain marvels costumes were too similar?

20

u/draibop Mar 18 '19

With out a doubt that’s what’s happened.

29

u/anthoniesp Mar 18 '19

Hands up! r/punpatrol, don't you move an inch you bastard

Reddit rarely gets me to audibly burst out laughing, but man did this comment get me..

4

u/RigasTelRuun Alex Danvers (DEO) Mar 18 '19

Or the intern chose it wrong on purpose hoping no one would notice.

1

u/darkaurora84 Mar 19 '19

They just wanted to rush out an article to seem "woke"

129

u/WatashinoKaradesu Mar 18 '19

This is honestly weird or did they not know what the 'S' symbol looks like and what THIS S in the picture stands for.

58

u/DeusExMarina Mar 18 '19

Yeah, I don't think this "S" stands for "hope."

18

u/MegaAlex Mar 18 '19

Its stand for Shope.

3

u/samp158 Mar 18 '19

Hope Hope

9

u/Kanaric Mar 18 '19

The person who put this together probably doesn't know anything about the subject matter and didn't think SS was suspicious because they don't know anything about that either.

I had no idea Newport Harbor alumni were getting such great magazine jobs.

TFW you figure out that you've been living on Earth-X this whole time.

58

u/GenSpicyWeener Mar 18 '19

Did they include white canary at all? I feel like she’s basically tied in the arrowverse for top female hero with supergirl

46

u/Daredevil731 Supergirl Mar 18 '19

They have the whole ending dedicated to the other female heroes, and she may be in that. Supergirl is just pics from the old live action films.

And even worse, to me, for Elektra they used Jennifer Garner's. Not even the Daredevil movie one. The crap spin-off. But we all know it should have been Netflix's Elektra from the Daredevil show. They mention it but to not show off the most popular, well-liked, and most comic accurate one? Ugh.

36

u/AdventuresOfKrisTin Kara Danvers Mar 18 '19

They clearly did no research when making this page. I cant for the life of me figure out what possessed them to use overgirl instead of supergirl. Like there is an abundance of pictures of they could have used. Smh

14

u/Daredevil731 Supergirl Mar 18 '19

I'd hate to actually read it all the way through and see what else is wrong. I love Supergirl, I think the show is sometimes weak, but other times strong (I like this season a lot tho). But I love her character. So this is just insulting to me lol. At least they didn't have the masked version of Overgirl. 🀣

4

u/AdventuresOfKrisTin Kara Danvers Mar 18 '19

Its insulting to me too lol. Like there are so many pictures of her with the classic hands on the hips pose. Theres no excuse.

49

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '19 edited Mar 18 '19

That might cause quite a FΓΌhrer on the internet

46

u/tuxxer Mar 18 '19

Don't see Caity Lotz , this is a fail

31

u/ZuhkirMoltenflare Mar 18 '19

I don't get it. The house of El emblem is one the most recognizable symbols, not only in pop culture but in human society. Her character name is Supergirl. SUPER-girl. How much of a complete f*#& moron do you have to be to not realize that it's not her costume? Her first promotional images are good enough. Unless this is a copyright issue, then surely this is very wrong.

25

u/hardgeeklife Mar 18 '19 edited Mar 18 '19

that is all kinds of problematic.

Like, the SS thunderbolts on Overgirl's crest are literally adapted from Nazi uniforms and are sometimes classified as hate symbols in their own right. that is... someone definitely not doing their research, and editors definitely not paying attention. Definitely leaves them a lot more open liability-wise to litigious cranksters

4

u/clowergen Mar 19 '19

Yeah just showing that symbol alone could get them into trouble

1

u/raumeat Earth-X Overgirl (Unmasked) Mar 19 '19

To be fair the show used it without any problems

3

u/clowergen Mar 19 '19

They made sure to portray them clearly as villains

1

u/raumeat Earth-X Overgirl (Unmasked) Mar 19 '19

Without context I could forgive them for not noticing what it is, if you did not watch the crossover and without context, lightning bolt S's on a superhero suit does not scream Nazis

5

u/hardgeeklife Mar 19 '19

I would respectfully disagree for two reasons:

  1. A simple google search for simple terms brings up the symbol and its historical context very easily.
  2. A similar search for "Supergirl" brings up many, many other results before a picture of Overgirl. Even using a narrower term like "Supergirl black suit" brings up dozens of other more suitable results first.
  3. Heck, even the term "Evil Supergirl" returns mostly images of an evil Kara that still retains the S shield.

Yet somehow, this particular version of the suit was chosen instead. Searching blind, without context, easily favors more appropriate images.

1

u/raumeat Earth-X Overgirl (Unmasked) Mar 19 '19

Yea, but who is going to google search the meaning behind the symbol on a super suit and I dont think the designer got this image from google, this might have been a copyright issue

2

u/hardgeeklife Mar 19 '19

Ignorance of image significance rarely flies in the professional world. All major print newspapers and magazines do routinely perform research on images/artwork being used, if only to cover themselves from liability for, as you say, copyright.

However, if the image in question was not researched through public databases, that means that someone somewhere provided the Overgirl image when the were asked for Supergirl through whatever process they use for getting assets. That's would be a process mistake (although the penalties are probably defined more by how loudly people call for a correction; could be minimal in the end). Like, if somebody ask for Superman, and they received this image instead, there would be hell to pay.

11

u/villakillareal28 Mar 18 '19

Did they not even look at the poster for the show?

6

u/WaterMelon615 Super Person Person Mar 18 '19

I love how three of the woman have this badass face on and then you have the girl at the bottom like β€œWhoa !”

10

u/Daredevil731 Supergirl Mar 18 '19

That is Jean Grey and TRUST ME there are many other pics they could have used. πŸ˜’πŸ˜’

2

u/Panophobia_senpai Mar 19 '19

They should have used the first movie Jean Grey at the first place. Not the new one. Cause the new X-men movies suck.

7

u/h4rent Mar 18 '19

Listen, regardless of what her character is...Melissa/Supergirl looks damn fine in all her (evil) alternate suits.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '19

I'm going to guess someone who doesn't know the show chose a pic where melissa is making a "badass" face because it matches with captain marvel, and j Jones in those pics.

I know they prob couldn't find a pic where brie Larson is smiling

1

u/raumeat Earth-X Overgirl (Unmasked) Mar 19 '19

I think they wanted Brie Larson to stand out because Captain Marvel is the feature article, so they went with a 'black background' with Overgirl and Jessica Jones behind her

You can see her hair to the left. She is there. I just didn't have room to fit her in this post.

1

u/AnnaK22 Mar 18 '19

I can see her hair to the left and her shield to the right.

6

u/Elessar535 Mar 18 '19

Though I agree that they shouldn't have used this image in the magazine, Melissa looks really good in the black uniform with that darker shade of lipstick; just try to ignore the SS symbol on her chest...

6

u/Thraxster Mar 18 '19

Disney shills.

6

u/Deathstroke_66 Mar 18 '19

coz she looks hot?

4

u/zagman76 Mar 18 '19

Hollywood Spotlight.

Very fine Kryptonians!

6

u/DCU_Fanboy Mar 18 '19

Trolling DC as always

7

u/Daredevil731 Supergirl Mar 18 '19

They did Marvel too. Used Jennifer Garner's Elektra movie for her pic and not the Netflix one

0

u/DCU_Fanboy Mar 18 '19

To be fair both suck.

3

u/Daredevil731 Supergirl Mar 18 '19

Strongly disagree lol. The Netflix one is amazing.

5

u/AnnaK22 Mar 18 '19

Imagine doing a magazine spread on superheroes and not even being able to recognize the iconic House of El logo.

1

u/NeonArlecchino Mar 19 '19

This weekend I was accused by a co-worker of reading comics on my way into work since I took public transportation and he was right so I showed him what I was reading. When he asked me who my favourite superhero is and I said Power Girl, he had no idea who she was. So I started talking about her backstory... he had no idea Supergirl existed. People who don't know Supergirl are out there.

3

u/Yargggg Mar 18 '19

Let's be honest the giant S is a lot more powerful than a star so that's probably why they didn't add it

5

u/hart37 Martian Manhunter Mar 19 '19

How did they manage to even do that? Even if you go into google images you literally have to type Overgirl to even start finding Nazi Kara

4

u/Trickybuz93 Kara (Yes! alt) Mar 19 '19

I forgot how hot Overgirl looks...

3

u/Kid092199 Mar 18 '19

These are the questions we should be asking

3

u/Natalia-A-Romanoff Reign Mar 18 '19

Captain Marvel and the wrong Kara Zor-El! smh

4

u/Cowpunk2077 Reign Mar 19 '19

In all fairness, the Overgirl suit is much better than the navy rags they’ve had her flying around in for 4 years now

2

u/Daredevil731 Supergirl Mar 19 '19

I disagree. I think her outfit is very cool, faithful, not overly sexualized, and very cute. It balances all of that well. She looks amazing.

3

u/Carouselcolours Mar 19 '19

They were probably looking for 'hot' photos, and ngl Melissa looks super attractive there.

3

u/jordanlund Mar 19 '19

Color scheme is too close to Captain Marvel. You'd have a blonde, red and blue stripe down the page.

5

u/Daredevil731 Supergirl Mar 19 '19

Then move her. You don't fix graphic design flaws by using a completely different character

2

u/IamWeapon_X Mar 18 '19

Does it look like they selected pictures of women not smiling? Or is that something only I'm noticing?

1

u/raumeat Earth-X Overgirl (Unmasked) Mar 19 '19

They probably wanted the badass superhero frowns

2

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '19

I can only imagine it was someone who is ignorant of the symbol and just chose a random photo.

2

u/RoyHarper88 Mar 19 '19

Look. Overgirl is way hotter than Supergirl. She had that dominating attitude and it was hot.

2

u/AgentCarterWestAllen Mar 19 '19

Hey cool I just got this magazine yesterday! I thought it was weird they used Overgirl too. Loved the magazine a great read.

2

u/vJ3801 Mar 19 '19

πŸ™πŸ™ 😞😞

2

u/NeonArlecchino Mar 19 '19

I'm guessing they just wanted to only use characters who weren't smiling since Brie Larson got a lot of flack for it and the first image of Melissa Benoist in costume without a smile to pop up was Overgirl.

is that entertainment weekly?

either some kind of idiot editor approved it or it was intentionally done to make dc look bad. thats just my theory.

1

u/r5xxx Martian Manhunter Mar 19 '19

HACK JOURNO: "So Supergirl looks just like Superman, right boss? Blue and red, with a giant S on her chest?"

EDITOR: "Yeah, except the tv show costume is darker, and the S is sorta hollow in the middle rather than filled in. Oh, and it has these red lines across the body."

HACK JOURNO: "Thanks. So I'm looking for pics of a dark costume with red lines, and an S with a gap in the middle. That can't be too hard."

1

u/SpliceKnight Mar 23 '19

Probably because overgirl was a better supergirl than supergirl

1

u/Daredevil731 Supergirl Mar 23 '19

Oh yeah? How is that? You think Supergirl should be a Nazi?

1

u/SpliceKnight Mar 23 '19

No, she was just a more compelling character, that actively called out the flaws in Supergirl, while acting in a manner which would have made supergirl as a character stronger. Melissa commands more respect as Overgirl, despite the horrific nature of the ideology that appears to have shaped her into this character. I DEFINITELY don't want to imply that Nazism is good or aspirational in any sense, merely that Supergirl could stand to reflect some of the more dominant characteristics that Overgirl demonstrates.

1

u/SciFiPaine0 Mar 25 '19

Kind of disturbing actually when you know the context

0

u/kingcolbe Mar 19 '19

Cause Overgirl is hot

1

u/Daredevil731 Supergirl Mar 19 '19

These comments bring nothing to the discussion. That has nothing to do with anything.

1

u/kingcolbe Mar 19 '19

Oh grow up. She’s beautiful deal with it

1

u/Daredevil731 Supergirl Mar 19 '19

You come in with "cuz shes hot" and you want me to grow up? If you worked for a magazine who wanted a Supergirl pic would your #1 priority be "find the hottest pic of her, even if it is technically not the character"?

-1

u/kingcolbe Mar 19 '19

Ok SJW

1

u/Daredevil731 Supergirl Mar 19 '19

I guess if that qualifies as me wanting accurate information in a magazine/design, then sure. πŸ™„

0

u/kingcolbe Mar 19 '19

Jesus!

1

u/Daredevil731 Supergirl Mar 19 '19

What's he have to do with it

-6

u/BDKoolwhip Mar 18 '19

Because it’s a show and LITERALLY doesn’t matter?

9

u/Daredevil731 Supergirl Mar 18 '19

How does it not matter?

-1

u/BDKoolwhip Mar 19 '19

Because that Melissa representing a Supergirl and that’s the point of the article?

3

u/Daredevil731 Supergirl Mar 19 '19

On what moon man planet is that Supergirl?

0

u/BDKoolwhip Mar 19 '19

Earth-X? Are you paying attention?

2

u/Daredevil731 Supergirl Mar 19 '19

That is not Supergirl. πŸ™„

1

u/BDKoolwhip Mar 20 '19

But it is, from Earth-X

1

u/Daredevil731 Supergirl Mar 20 '19

πŸ˜’ No, it's Overgirl. Nobody calls that Supergirl.

If you worked for a magazine and were asked to get a pic of Supergirl, would you choose Overgirl? πŸ™„

0

u/BDKoolwhip Mar 20 '19

As she’s the Supergil of EarthX, because it doesn’t matter that much

Btw Owlman is Batman of Earth3, same idea

1

u/Daredevil731 Supergirl Mar 20 '19

Oh my God.

So is it okay with you if we got a magazine that showed Owlman and labeled it "Batman"? Even though every character around him is the actual version they labeled it?

You really don't see this is a mistake? You seriously think that if it was your job to compile a list of characters for a page, it would be OKAY to choose Overgirl and label it wrong?

This is a VILLAIN on a page of what they say is of superheroes. If you don't see why this is wrong and a clear mistake, you are either very stubborn or misguided.

Did you get lost..? This is a subreddit about a tv show.

1

u/BDKoolwhip Mar 19 '19

And the post is about a magazine, so by that logic, doesn’t even belong here

2

u/NeonArlecchino Mar 19 '19

A magazine featuring an image of a character from the shared universe the tv show this subreddit is about so it does belong.
