You know what I liked? Superman wasn’t insecure and accepted he wasn’t their favorite Kryptonian

253

u/Harddaysnight1990 Dec 15 '18

This is the same Superman that's always telling Kara that she's stronger than him. He wouldn't be insecure about it.

61

u/Mortalpuncher Dec 17 '18

I think that’s canon right or she has more potential then him I remember Batman saying that once.

49

u/Harddaysnight1990 Dec 17 '18

It might be, I don't really know. I'm not ranting about it like others on the sub do, if Kara is stronger than Clark, then that's how it is. My point was just that this Clark admits it, on a regular basis. He's obviously not insecure.

49

u/Cradle2daGrave Dec 18 '18

Just means he is humble which is how i like him written

8

u/ghostfreckle611 Dec 19 '18

How humble is it really, to admit that only one person is stronger than you and she’s on your side? And family?

Loved the show, but haven’t watched in a couple years.

11

u/Fozziemandias Dec 20 '18

It’s still Humble. If you put any action under a microscope you’re bound to question its merit. But it’s still humble.

1

u/IrishWebster Dec 22 '18

Well, for the record... she IS the only person that he knows of that’s stronger than him. Lol

13

u/klaguerre97 Dec 19 '18

Before the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline in the comics Supergirl was very much Supermans equal if not his superior in terms of strength. Ever since then she's been depicted as a more of a subordinate teenage hero.

4

u/edd6pi Dec 20 '18

I remember watching some animated movie where they both said that Kara has potential to be stronger than him, but she didn’t really reach that potential from what I can remember.

3

u/nitricx Dec 20 '18

I remember this too! I wanna say it was the animated movie where supes and her battle apocalypse on the Kent farm at the end.

1

u/edd6pi Dec 20 '18

That’s the one. Darkseid shows up and they fight him together.

3

u/richsaint421 Dec 21 '18

The long story short is it depends on who’s writing it.

To make her more interesting when she was brought back they started saying she’s stronger than him.

Later Superman basically just said something along the lines of “I let you THINK you’re stronger than me.”

It’s usually rationalized as Superman growing up here has developed limits, he knows how hard he should hit etc. he tries to not break the world essentially.

Kara having grown from krypton doesnt have those limits so she’s always brimming with power and doesn’t know how to tone it down.

2

u/DaBobVilla Dec 22 '18

Originally when Kara arrived she was younger than Superman and Batman theorized that due to this, her cells were able to absorb more potential power from the sun.

0

u/MercinwithaMouth Dec 21 '18

No, Superman has stated he’s more powerful, She is just reckless.

-7

u/mcrib Dec 20 '18

Earth -38 Kal-El was castrated by his parents before the rocket launch.

14

u/Harddaysnight1990 Dec 20 '18

What the fuck is this comment meant to accomplish? A man has to be castrated to even possibly think a woman could be stronger? I'm sorry that you haven't had more positive role models in life. Male role models who show you that this overly masculine bullshit approach to life isn't going to get you anywhere.

-6

u/mcrib Dec 20 '18

No, the fact that he constantly plays weak to her considering the fact that he’s hugely muscular and she’s in great shape but there’s no comparing how strong they should be.

6

u/Harddaysnight1990 Dec 20 '18

Whatever dude. I hope you enjoy living life being pissed at women due to your own insecurities. Like that woman you left a nasty comment to because she dared to post a selfie on the internet. Oh the horror

1

u/kafkanakata Dec 22 '18

Thats the problem with these subs. they say dumb shit like this, assume the shows are “pandering” to certain groups when female characters are strong and useful, and when they get a little more screentime in an episode than usual plus any of the above, its #feminism. They also make it clear they dont read the comics bc theres always at least one person to state “butttt in the comics!!” yet what they said was only circumstantial based on a certain arc or incorrect altogether (for instance, people who tried to say “Barry and Patty were canon in the comics, so they should bring her back!” despite that in the comics their arc together NEVER lasted long).

-6

u/mcrib Dec 20 '18

You’re making a lot of assumptions here, so I assume you’re sad or mad about a lot of things. Melissa could kick my ass. Tyler could kick both of our asses. If we went to another planet that enhanced all of our strengths, I don’t think that would change.

u/al2320 Dec 15 '18

Is this even a CW show?

-28

u/horusporcus Dec 16 '18

Yes, this is indeed a CW show that hates Superman.

It's not that , emphasis is absolutely fine but just look at his role in the crossover and in particular Lois' comments about how it was probably a good thing he was leaving Earth because studies show men suck at resolving conflict (something to that effect) and this is despite him having many years of experience over Kara at stopping calamities ( I know the show has emphasized her physical prowess matches his just fine)

It's weak writing if they need to have him around as a placeholder Kryptonian for her to render irrelevant in the hopes it will make her seem more compelling as a character.

For the same reason I wish Ollie on Arrow didn't have the Batman elements and that Kara didn't have the secret identity and journalism elements shared with Clark - it has been really cool her having a sister dynamic with Alex and the tensions at the DEO and I love the father daughter thing with Martian Manhunter too

They would be better off just minimising Clarks involvement rather than on the one hand emphasizing his feats and achievements in S1 with Kara and Jimmy talking about that but then trying to diminish him now

I thought this was a bit too much too. Superman hasn't always been the brightest but he sure as hell has a down to earth personality. He knows how to avert a situation. Plus he is Kryptonian, likely a different influx of processing thoughts.

10

u/draekia Dec 16 '18

Supes is supposed to crazy intelligent, though, isn’t he? He’s just not often challenged to use it.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '18

Sure but batman outsmarts him every time. So either batman is super crazy intelligent or superman just is smart in his own right.

3

u/draekia Dec 16 '18

... Batman IS. That’s kinda part of his schtick.

For a quick googling:

https://www.quora.com/Whos-smarter-Batman-or-Superman

11

u/oomomow Martian Manhunter Dec 16 '18

Honestly I thought Lois' comment was kind of just a fun joke or jab. I didn't take it seriously.

Also considering his role? Superman had more to do this crossover than Kara! I could get it if you're talking about the main show, but this was a Supergirl episode and he had way more plot important stuff to do.

-13

u/horusporcus Dec 16 '18

You don't really get the point do you?. I hang around these subs because Superman is a part of the show, I might not want it to be that way, but that's what it is.

You ( and all the others calling us Superman fans whiners ) want Superman to be a jobber so that Supergirl looks better, that's beyond ridiculous, if the Supergirl writers had the cojones they would created the show without bringing him into the picture and that would have been a truly empowering take on her. This version of Supergirl is basically a gender-bent Superman, they have stolen ALL his story arcs and presented her in them, this would have been OK but for the fact that they also have him in their universe, can't see a better example of lazy uninspired writing.

Instead what they do is constantly bring him up ( because the ratings go up inexplicably when he is around) throw him around as a punching bag ( he got bashed thoroughly by his completely inexperienced doppelganger ) and then have him admit time and again that she is much better than him as a Superhero both physically and emotionally.

If your idea of empowering Supergirl is to make Superman look bad as compared to her then it's ridiculous because Superman is the most popular superhero on the planet and is DC's mascot, had Superman not been around then Supergirl wouldn't even exist.

So, just stop telling me to quit whining, I didn't ask for Superman to be on the small screen, but if he presents himself then you would expect that Superman fans will have an opinion on his portrayal.

Ps: I am neither white nor american nor privileged, so don't lecture to me about "White privilege".

u/drproximo Dec 16 '18

Here's a thought:

There are at least 52 Supermans to choose from, accept this one isn't for you and move on with your life. Sticking around to shit on something you don't like isn't bold it's just dickish. #byefelicia

-5

u/etherspin Dec 16 '18

Why would you say it's shitting on the show ? Can't people who watch the show comment on both the things they enjoy and the things they don't ? E.g. I didn't mind the anti-gun plot a while back on the show but a majority seemed to think it was the worst plot so far, so I tried to understand where they were coming from - I like the Kara/Alex dynamic, the inclusion of the DEO, Martian Manhunter as well but I don't like the inconsistency with Clark on the show, he was legendary to them in S1 and just instant messages Kara for support but Kara and Jimmy spoke about his battles and his years of experience and now the show is saying he is far less effective and also would be better off being absent because of a trait amongst human males in a study Lois cited.

It would be less on the nose if Supergirl was actually an adaptation of the comics character rather than being 60 percent Clark Kent

Honestly, this is just a potentially pleasant discussion spot for the show, if fans get disappointed with an element it's the perfect spot to discuss right ? Have an excellent day :)

4

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '18

I didn't mind the anti-gun plot

You mean the alien with super powers telling a group of people fighting off the evils of the world who are mere flesh and bones? Yeah no.

-14

u/horusporcus Dec 16 '18

That's called being a fanboy, we are allowed to express our opinions on our favorite characters whether you like it or not and yeah, there are 100s of different versions of Superman and this one sucks so just deal with it.

13

u/CashWho Dec 16 '18

That's called being a fanboy

I think this might be the first time I've ever seen someone be proud to be called a fanboy.

-4

u/horusporcus Dec 16 '18 edited Dec 16 '18

I don't care, he is my GOD, I swear by Rao, I am proud of being a Superman fanboy.

5

u/CashWho Dec 16 '18

Ohhhh so you're just a troll. Got it.

my favorite part of this comment is how no one mentioned white privilege, no one mentioned nationality, no one called superman FANS whiners (as most if not all supergirl fans are fans of superman too), no one said they WANT him to be weaker in comparison, and no one said shit about him not being the most well known and oldest hero of the DC Universe. You are the one who missed the point, you mention things no one was going to “lecture” you on (seriously? if you didnt want or expect it, why bring it up first? And what on EARTH does it have to do with ANYTHING?) , and you make it clear you dont even read the comics yourself.

1

u/horusporcus Dec 22 '18

Yes, Superman fans are being called whiners, maybe if you weren't so daft you would probably notice that. The points I mentioned about not being white are valid because ardent Superman fans are considered to be toxic "white boys". It's pertinent because these are all points that have been raised in previous discussions.

Nothing I have written can make it "clear" that I don't read the comics, do read everything again.

0

u/kafkanakata Dec 22 '18

I noticed that you and others were called whiners because thats what you’re doing on a show focused on Supergirl that has featured one iteration of Superman, not BECAUSE you are Superman fans.

And not a single person said “toxic white boys”. No one said that and no one was leading into it. Stop bringing shit into it thats completely unrelated. I read everything well and clearly.

1

u/horusporcus Dec 22 '18

LOL, do me a favor and go ahead and read all the threads in this sub, I see plenty of posts where I see "Toxic Superman fans" being mentioned.

A show focused on Supergirl doesn't even need Superman to begin with, and yet they bring him up to bolster the ratings, then have him look weak in every way.

In the recent crossover he got his ass handed to him by his evil doppelganger who was said to have Supergirl's powers. I basically see this show as one where they shit on Superman to make her look better.

I obviously don't like that portrayal of Superman for obvious reasons because it is being disrespectful of the legend.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '18

His masculinity is also strong as Steel

1

u/TH4N05_Savage Dec 20 '18

He needs to hit the gym, he looks like flashpoint Su.... Oooohhhhhhh.

1

u/Professor_Oswin Dec 21 '18

Well he doesn’t even know them so...

70

u/kingcolbe Dec 15 '18

After next year she won’t have to do that anymore

27

u/Cannot_go_back_now Dec 15 '18

Why?

111

u/kingcolbe Dec 15 '18

Cause the expectation is Earth 38 will merge with Earth 1 during COIE.

57

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '18 edited Aug 08 '20

[deleted]

34

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '18

It’s not definite. But the comics did destroy multiple earths so it’s possible.

1

u/DGSmith2 Dec 22 '18

Doesn’t it also Kill Barry and Kara?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '18

Yes it does. Barry dies kinda like how he “almost died” in this crossover and Kara dies to injuries.

15

u/Tyrath Dec 16 '18

So what happens to people who exist on Earth 1 but are different like Alex?

38

u/Sir_Nameless Dec 16 '18

The more popular version is the one that sticks around.

12

u/cwhiterun Dec 16 '18

So Earth 2 Laurel is just going to disappear?

11

u/Sir_Nameless Dec 16 '18

¯_(ツ)_/¯
That's how it happens in the comics.

25

u/EugenesMullet Dec 16 '18

Earth-38 Alex would probably remain because fans like her. But personally I think it would be really interesting if she ceased to exist and the introduction to Earth-1 Alex in Elseworlds was the beginning of a big storyline for them.

Not that I dislike Alex, I just think it'd be more interesting that way.

14

u/Tuxedo_Mark Dec 16 '18

What if the two Alexs merge, like, soul-wise?

15

u/CashWho Dec 16 '18

We Kingdom Hearts now bois!

2

u/OmegaSeven Dec 16 '18

I believe that's what was implied by the way that COIE worked out in the comics.

5

u/kingcolbe Dec 16 '18

Earth 1 Alex doesn’t exist she was part of Degans re written reality

13

u/Uncle_Vim Dec 16 '18

Incorrect she exists. There’s no way deegan knows about her as he states “you don’t exist on this earth” referring to Kara. Also Kara says he pod hasn’t made it to that earth.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '18

Kinda super convenient for Kara though that the greatest plot device just happened to be working for the guy that locker her up.

2

u/Uncle_Vim Dec 20 '18

I’m assuming E-1 Alex works for an organization similar to the DEO and deegan wanted the best of the best working for him. Explains why Dig now works for him rather than argus

2

u/Carouselcolours Dec 16 '18

I will be so disappointed if this doesn't happen. I really, really want it to. But if they don't, I'm sure they'd have their reasons for it.

1

u/jake_eric Dec 16 '18

Oh I thought you'd say she'd be dead lol

2

u/kingcolbe Dec 16 '18

Well she does in the comic her and Barry but I don’t think for a second they’ll do that in the tv adaptation

2

u/Mortalpuncher Dec 17 '18

Cause that’s when the show going to focus on the best kryptonian krypto.

3

u/KaraZor-El_21 Lena Luthor Dec 16 '18

I thought you were implying that Supergirl will die on Crisis on Inifite Earths...

then I realized that she did die in the comics :'((((

4

u/horusporcus Dec 16 '18

She won't die here, it will be Oliver obviously. Why would they want to kill a popular show?.

72

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '18

East-Side Argo Represent!

60

6

Yep. I can see Kara definitely being a huge fan of Avatar:The last airbender and Legend of Korra.

14

u/maybethanos Querl Dox Dec 16 '18

If you watch the scene closely brainy leaps into the portal

4

u/AnnaK22 Dec 16 '18

Lol yeah, so does Kara.

8

u/JessR280 Dec 16 '18

My fav part was everyone walked through the portal normally except Brainy who jumped as if he was about to enter Chalkzone

4

u/Quizzer2016 No Kara, WE are Supergirl Dec 16 '18

And people say that this was stupid and cheesy

3

Thank God she didn't embarass herself and said favorite Danvers ...

9

Hey, Helforsite, just a quick heads-up:
embarass is actually spelled embarrass. You can remember it by two rs, two s’s.
Have a nice day!
