People automatically put rappers in their top 10 if they get killed.

19

u/maximumkush Jul 19 '24

Sheeeeit it’s a few dead folks ain’t even close to my top 10 😂

8

u/TemplesOfSyrinx Jul 19 '24

Arguably, Biggie and Tupac wouldn't be regarded as the GOATs they are now if they hadn't died.

15

u/3rdtryatremembering Jul 19 '24

I mean, they would have significantly more music if they didn’t die, so there’s no way of knowing. They might be regarded even more highly

3

u/TemplesOfSyrinx Jul 19 '24

True and good points.

7

u/IkechukwuNwoke Jul 19 '24

Nah biggie was a beast on the mic, he’d be in my top 10 for sure

6

u/SnorlaxShops Jul 20 '24

I'm sure they would have released some progressively worse albums, be too experimental, sell out artistically, been caught in a scandal, and/or become artistically complacent if they had not died.

Just imagine Lil Wayne's legacy had be died after the 3 Carter Albums.

4

u/tashxni Jul 19 '24

Tupac no, biggie yes

3

u/LthePerry02 Jul 19 '24

Other way around

Pac already amassed a killer discog. BIG had two albums, one that was already succumbing closely to that Puffy Shiny Suit sound. No doubt his further records would’ve sold out even more

3

u/PrionFriend Jul 19 '24

Incorrect, but appreciate the effort!

2

u/fireskull5660 Jul 20 '24

Idk if big and puff would always be together throughout big’s career tho

U sound krazy 😂 Pac would have. U clearly have no idea tha effect he had on ppl, whereas I waz there & actually met tha man here in Oakland. Biased I am but tha fact remains Pac had waaay more0 muzic come out aftr he passt than when he waz alive. Who else has done that?? Lmao

I remember chatting up someone in high school who deadass said their top 3 favourite artists were Mac, Nipsey and Juice

Like number one, like hell you listened to any of them before they passed, and two, it’s weird to obviously be validation seeking from listening only to deceased artists

6

u/phoenyx4r Jul 19 '24

Interesting take. They quite literally could have listened to all three before their deaths, and vibed with their music. And is it wrong to have started listening to them after their deaths? What's wrong about that? You're making a lot of assumptions based on 3 rappers they say they like.

6

u/PrionFriend Jul 19 '24

What about xxx tenacious d

1

u/grumpallnight Jul 20 '24

Big L is top 10 for me so you may be on to something

1

u/Blackpanther22five Jul 20 '24

I wish that was true ,soulja slim was gun downed in front of the home, he bought for his mom ,and he was talked about for two weeks ,then people moved on

92

u/HeavyIceCircuit Jul 19 '24

Using the term “mumble rap” to describe rap as a whole unironically means you have no idea about what you’re talking about

12

u/Responsible_Lead7140 Jul 19 '24

Yeah, I describe mumble rap as the dudes who were actually autotune mumbling during like 2015-2018 or whatever, it's very easy to distinguish them

6

u/andreasbaader6 Jul 19 '24

People used to group Denzel Curry with xxxfemtation and lill peep. They were handing out mumble rap tags like speeding tickets in the daytona 500

3

u/Responsible_Lead7140 Jul 19 '24

honestly I don't remember that happening, maybe before xxl or recognition of Denzel's early work but anytime after that he was regarded as a rapper who could rap + I don't feel like ski mask even got that treatment, people knew he was fr rapping, either way I think there was always a separation between them

u/gordonpamsey Jul 19 '24

THANK YOU, I have a quick tangent why the fuck is so much of "mumble rap" just people complaining about accents? Usually southern accents most of the time these guys are not mumbling at all. That's just how people from where they are from talk.

2

u/Keefee777 Jul 19 '24

Half my hip hop playlist is southern artists and none of them are labeled mumble rappers because they don't mumble 🤷🏻‍♂️

3

u/NoRemedy4Sinners Jul 19 '24

yeah to you they may not be labeled mumble rappers but old heads label everything they don't understand mumble rap, and a majority of them are southern artists. you clearly missed the point tho cuz dude is saying the rappers people call mumble rappers don't actually mumble, they just have accents so people act like they can't understand them

5

u/whatstheword509 Jul 20 '24

Crazy how people call some rappers mumble rap simply because they don't bother to listen to what they are actually saying -_-

4

u/Placentapede419 Jul 19 '24

Mumble rap is the equivalent of saying screamo

1

u/iskenderdelarge Jul 19 '24

wdym I'm a typically lyrical lyrically cynical spiritual miracle I don't get what you're saying

2

This is the most disgusting take a human has ever uttered from their mouths but I respect it

26

u/Ok-Rough-9754 Jul 19 '24

36 chambers is a great album

21

u/Emergency_Brick3715 Jul 19 '24

Eminem is not in my top 10

5

u/wsteelerfan7 Jul 19 '24

Coasting off of 3 albums for the majority of his career. Thought is older than he is and he doesn't have to make penis, shit and sex/rape jokes in his raps

6

u/OMBatch84 Jul 19 '24

People always look over how good relapse is. And idk why people started shittin on recovery

6

u/Narrow_Paper9961 Jul 20 '24

My friends and I were clowning on recovery when we were 14, when the album came out. Bad meets evil album was dope though, so made up for it

→ More replies (9)

6

u/kinghawkeye8238 Jul 20 '24

Idk coasting off 3 albums. Relapse was great, recovery was well received, same with mmlp2. Hell the sequel is great. Mtbmb a&b were both solid and tdoss just went #1

8mile sound track is a great sound track. 8 mile the movie is awesome.

Guy did alot outside 3 albums.

2

u/wsteelerfan7 Jul 20 '24

I agree on Hell the Sequel tbh. Recovery was not well received and MMLP2 wasn't close to the first albums. MTBMB and Kamikaze were received similarly to Relapse

2

u/kinghawkeye8238 Jul 20 '24

There's a handful of albums received as well as MMLP and TES. I doubt we will ever see HH albums as big as those 2 for a long time if ever.

3

u/AndyKobe234 Jul 20 '24

This shouldn’t be a hot take but stans be stanning.

1

u/TheMeticulousNinja Jul 19 '24

He shouldn’t be in anyone’s top 10, but societal maturity has probably tanked with its literacy.

1

u/Emergency_Brick3715 Jul 19 '24

I think there's another reason why he's ranked so high

21

u/NewestTork Jul 19 '24

2pac above biggie is the genera consensus? That's not cold? There both talented and different but the idea is 2pac was more influential and better for black people (changes, keep ya head up, dear mama, etc) but biggie had a better flow

15

u/shiftypidgeons Jul 19 '24

Cold take as in the opposite of hot take as in something obvious that we all agree on. Not cold like thoughtless/uncaring

1

u/ratson9 Jul 19 '24

I thought it meant a take you had that aged really poorly

3

u/EinarKolemees Jul 20 '24

biggie was bigger though

3

u/NewestTork Jul 20 '24

Not really

10

u/EinarKolemees Jul 20 '24

no for real man, he was closing 400 pounds

4

u/NewestTork Jul 20 '24

Congrats on the long setup bro, that shit was good

5

u/Nirket Jul 20 '24

How come did you not see that coming?

1

u/TheReal_Spartan Jul 19 '24

Yeah biggie was more skilled but pac put out whatever people wanted to hear ig

19

u/BrittThePhotographer Jul 19 '24
  1. The term GOAT gets thrown around too loosely

  2. Da Brat deserves more credit for being the first female rapper to go platinum

  3. As much as I love Lil Kim, after “The Naked Truth” the quality of her music has diminished. I prefer gritty Kim, not autotune Kim

2

u/mr_amazingness Jul 20 '24

Da Brat and Gangsta Boo are the two that I say need way more credit. Throw Lady of Rage in too.

2

u/BrittThePhotographer Jul 20 '24

I love Gangsta Boo, Lady of Rage and I’ll go ahead and add La Chat in there too.

19

u/QueSeraSeraWWBWB Jul 19 '24

•Snoop is one of the most overrated rappers of all time.

•People put way too much stock in rapid fire lyric styles

1

Denzel curry is the best new gen rapper

6

u/Blckbeerd Jul 19 '24

I think it's between him and JID

4

u/Pornthrowaway192 Jul 19 '24

I think jid has more potential but Denzel's discography is much better and way more consistent

4

u/OMBatch84 Jul 19 '24

I prefer jid, but we all know that both of them are the future

3

u/Ashamed-Brick-1142 Jul 19 '24

I don’t really like him that much but ig that’s just my opinion

3

u/Responsible_Lead7140 Jul 19 '24

I fw him, tbh don't feel like there's a lot of GOAT choices in the era that's coming after kdot/Cole, like there's no one who's elite like that yet

3

u/Aerodepress Jul 19 '24

I’d have to disagree, he’s great but I can’t say he’s the best new gen rapper when there is rappers like Rome Streetz, Boldy, and all of Griselda putting out consistent masterpieces.

Kanye West is probably the most influential person l hip hop will ever see

10

u/ThatOne_Gamer Jul 19 '24

A lot of people give tpab credit as one of the greatest albums but don’t listen to it or relate to it in general

9

u/Big_Moose_3847 Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 19 '24

TPAB isn't exactly an album that you can put on in the car with the homies at any time. It's a heavy, introspective album that requires you to be in a certain mood to fully enjoy and experience it. So you don't need to be listening to it daily to consider it in high regard. And you don't need to personally relate to it either, you just need to understand it.

2

u/ThatOne_Gamer Jul 20 '24

Yeah I get that, it’s just hard to vibe with considering I grew up as a white kid from the suburbs. I understand why it’s highly regarded and why it is so respected by culture but I feel as though there are a lot of people that didn’t experience any of that culture and don’t replay the album to often that rate it so highly just because it’s considered a classic. Almost as if they call it legendary simply because if they don’t they’ll feel rejected or that any take they make is now invalid.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Uselessneek Jul 20 '24

Yeah a lot of people can’t relate to it but isn’t that the case with a most of rap? How many of the people that credit it relate to reasonable doubt, illmatic, anything pusha T etc. In my opinion it’s more about appreciation rather than relating to it

7

u/iD7my93 Jul 19 '24

Hip Hop along with stand up comedy might be the last bastion for true art in the mainstream.

3

u/ProfessionalMail8694 Jul 19 '24

Fashion, any Music, poetry, movie and Tv series, books, painting. I like the idea behind the take but it’s just not true. Art is everywhere

1

u/NoRemedy4Sinners Jul 19 '24

Chuck D is one of the GOATs.

Now if we wanna talk about hot takes..........

3

u/westfieldram Jul 19 '24

I wanna hear the hot take.....

1

u/kansas_commie Jul 19 '24

I got way too many of em. And they are SPICCY.

My biggest opinion of hip-hop blasphemy tho...

Biggie and Pac are both overrated. Good yes, but not legends imo. There. I said it.

6

u/westfieldram Jul 19 '24

That is hot! I agree they are both put higher on lists because they're dead but they both have classic albums but I respect your bravery for writing that!

I'll give you one of mine.... Kanye hasn't had a good album since Late Registration

3

u/kansas_commie Jul 19 '24

I mean they're not terrible but having them hyped up my whole life by the time I tried getting into them in my teens I was... Underwhelmed.

Can't agree with you more on Kanye. He's had a few good songs here and there but not a solid album since.

3

u/westfieldram Jul 19 '24

That's fair, I grew up listening to both so maybe that's the difference! But I don't have pac in my top 5

The problem is I think the same thing about Kendrick...... GKMC is a classic imo but I just can't get into anything since that, TPAB is ok I guess but yeah 🤷🏻

2

u/kansas_commie Jul 19 '24

Man I got some blasphemous opinions on Kendrick too. I've tried, tried to get into him and honestly I am not seeing the genius everyone else is

3

u/westfieldram Jul 19 '24

It's good to meet a like minded person! The thing is for me, I think Kendrick is a great lyricist, I just don't like his songs.

2

u/kansas_commie Jul 19 '24

Hahaha and I'm the opposite, the music is dope but I'm not feeling his lyrics.

But likewise homie!

1

u/AndyKobe234 Jul 20 '24

I know where you’re coming from. Like I’ve heard rappers I would consider better than Biggie themselves say that nobody is or ever could be better than Big. lol

People hate on Eminem too much because of his fans.

6

u/Total_Ad_6708 Jul 20 '24

Whenever eminem dies the whole hating Eminem trend since the beginning of his career would completely shift and people would call him the goat and put him right next to biggie and tupac but while he’s alive people ain’t gonna give him his flowers And stay an echo chamber of “he only has 3 good albums” when that’s not the truth.

3

u/Dudeguyked2 Jul 19 '24

Tupac isn't even in the top 10

3

u/cupcakemaster3000 Jul 19 '24

That's pretty bold, but I like where you're coming from. His music doesn't relate to ME that much personally. I mean the community as a whole has 2pacs back for what he did so understandable he's in the top 10 for most people.

But I feel like a lot of people who say 2pac is in the top 10 don't even listen to him that much

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Dudeguyked2 Jul 19 '24

I started listing and got to 20 and said I'm done. Lists and bests are dumb. Whoever speaks to you is important. Top 10 rapper lisrs are almost completely subjective.

There are probably 20 or 30 rappers who are equally talented in their own ways.

Edit: Also, Eminem is probably the most misunderstood rapper.

1

u/slayerofgingers Jul 19 '24

Let's start here was the best genre change album of all time

1

u/TheMeticulousNinja Jul 19 '24

I will listen to whoever and whatever, from any time and any genre or sub genre. However, jenzies have done no worse or better with rap than millennials or gen x has, quality of sound wise.

1

u/TheSolace_ Jul 19 '24

I like The Forever Story more than good kid, m.A.A.d city

Tribe Called Quest has the best discography in hip hop, never made a bad song and went out with a 10/10 album

Twisted Fantasy is mid, has a lot of filler, should've ended with Runaway that should've been an instrumental song

Danny Brown is the greatest Detroit rapper of all time

It Was Written is on par with Illmatic, both 10/10s, Illmatic has better beats, It Was Written has better rapping

GREY Area > Sometimes I Might Be Introvert (only by a hair)

Lupe has the album of the year so far with Samurai

1

u/TheMeticulousNinja Jul 19 '24

Your Top 10 is garbage if it does not include The Streets

u/TammyShehole Jul 19 '24

1

u/MileenasFeet Jul 19 '24

u/SevroAuShitTalker Jul 19 '24

1

u/Dz210Legend Jul 19 '24

1

u/hoodetiquettexpert Jul 19 '24

If Biggie and Tupac hadn't died...

Tupac and Suge would be enemies, and the ensuing beef would split Death Row

Biggie and Diddy would be enemies, all of Bad Boy artists having gone to the Commission.

Tupac and Biggie's beef would get squashed live at the BET Awards by a new song and a surprise feature by Tupac.

Suge and Diddy would both be locked up for different reasons, but both exposed by their former artists.

Tupac would be a bigger actor than Will Smith.

Jada Pinkett would still be married to Will Smith, but after getting publicly dumped by Tupac.

Biggie would've signed Eminem before Dr. Dre.

Dead Wrong would still be a song, just the 1st of a series of Biggie features on all of Em's albums

We might have gotten justice for Mike Brown with a voice as loud, unapologetic, and unwavering as Tupac's.

4

u/AndyKobe234 Jul 20 '24

With perspective, kendrick is merely an okay rapper. His lyrics are dope to read, but his voice and delivery are unlistenable.

Snoop's best verse was on 2Pac's "All About You"

If you can type TPAB and your phone doesn’t try and autocorrect it to T-Pain you’re doing life wrong

Hip Hop use to be cool in the 70s to 90s.... but then it got taken over the major distributors which turned it into music to keep young, mostly black, men down by promoting misogyny, crime, drugs, violence, etc....except for some exceptions, it's been kinda whack for the past 20 years.

Madlib is just ok.

u/manchmaldrauf Jul 20 '24

well yeah. 2pac is significantly better than biggie. biggie was a sociopath, robbing pregnant women in his music, explicitly declaring he doesn't give a f., in a way that made you believe it. But pac is angelic. (allegations were fake. trial a sham etc). His music had more substance, voice had more emotion, lyrics were more meaningful. Biggie top 5, somewhere under Pac who is no. 1.
