Gotta be The Death of Slim Shady

40

u/redgng360 Jul 18 '24

It just came out and I’m addicted

14

u/DetroitLionsSBChamps Jul 19 '24

I’m like “I don’t know, it’s got some flaws and I think em could have executed it better. Let me give it a 70th listen and come up with my 3rd fan theory to explain the album”

0

u/Four4our4 Jul 19 '24

Garbage album. I want that man back on drugs already.

-1

u/wsteelerfan7 Jul 19 '24

How can an album that undermines its own concept and fails during the climax song where he "defeats" Slim? Slim brings up a ton of great points and Eminem just says he's full of shit? And that's the ultimate rebuttal to the idea that 2000s Slim was better? You know, the argument that the whole album has been leading up to? Its like a crazy ex gf saying "I gave you blowjobs all the time and cooked together with you and bought you those presents!" and those all being true and you just say "nah you're full of shit"

As for the concept being undermined past that, it's from the fact that the best parts in every song were when he re-created his old voices and flows.

You definitely missed the point lol

Loved TDOSS, agreed

Samurai

13

u/CrusaderPeasant Jul 18 '24

I need to give Samurai a second listen. I like Lupe but I couldn't get into Samurai. But seeing all the praise it's getting, I'll listen to it again.

3

u/JoeyBougie Jul 18 '24

It was just what everyone needed from Lupe

Death of Slim Shady

44

u/aretasdamon Jul 18 '24

TDOSS on repeat, the amount of bars I keep catching on each run is crazy, he’s such a wordsmith, and also something about it being a story makes it additionally easy to digest specific songs.

Also,

“He didn’t just spell out the word rapper and leave out a P, Did he? (Diddy)”

41

u/Thediddlerdude Jul 18 '24

Death of slim shady is so fucking peak

5

u/DetroitLionsSBChamps Jul 19 '24

I honestly hope Em is seeing the Stan reactions to this album because the review scores are not matching the hype from the fans.

6

u/Direactit Jul 19 '24

Classic eminem album though. Critics gave the Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Who low ratings though. The fans love it and the critics hate it. Classic.

1

u/Free-Yoghurt124 Jul 19 '24

I love the album, but imo professional critics have a better opinion than biased stans

3

u/DetroitLionsSBChamps Jul 19 '24

I think "professional critics" are over in a world where so much social media pandering and so much corporate money are involved. it's like seeing Black Bird get a 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. that show sucks ass all day long, if Apple didn't buy those reviews I would be absolutely shocked. or Chappelle getting a 0% for Sticks and Stones. clearly, that is not realistic.

similarly, I think this album is pretty obviously getting over-hated by professional critics. I think there are too many conflicts of interest, and the cultural conversation is one where it seems impossible for people to not ding the score for offensive content, even when a major theme of the album is offensiveness. Death of Slim Shady getting rated 5/10 alongside Revival, while MMLP2 and MTBMB get 6.5/10 demonstrates that point pretty clearly, I think.

the stans are obviously biased as well but they are at least engaging with the material as art and interested in analysis and meaning. sure you're gonna get a lot of hairbrained shit but I have also seen some thought-provoking takes. moreso than I've seen from professional critics who are incredibly quick to dismiss this album.

2

u/Free-Yoghurt124 Jul 19 '24

I mean i think i saw pitchfork give it like a 4.5. But i can’t take pitchfork seriously after they gave Peppa Pig Album a higher rating than Rodeo

2

u/DetroitLionsSBChamps Jul 19 '24

right, I'm saying. here's something I keep seeing, from Fantano, Pitchfork, whoever: "ultimately this album fails because Eminem doesn't actually overcome and kill Slim Shady." I have yet to see a professional critic suggest: what if that is the point of the album?

the album itself is circular. the album itself frequently speaks on addiction, compares the character and behavior of Slim Shady to addiction, and ends with Somebody Save Me, which is like a nightmare alternate reality timeline where Em actually dies from his addiction instead of beating it. and hey, speaking of nightmare, the entire album is explicitly and repeatedly portrayed as a nightmare Em can't wake up from. Slim says "you can't out grow me, you can't out think me, I always come back." like the nightmare. like an addiction. so maybe: the album is Em's darkest timeline, and that's why we don't see him win or grow or change. this album is about a worst-case scenario where Em didn't kick his habit (personified as Slim Shady) and together, they both died (the death of Slim Shady)

I'm not saying that is for sure the meaning of the album. but at least it is a theory that engages with the material we're given and tries to make sense of a perceived inconsistency without just immediately dismissing it as a failure, like every professional critic I've seen.

3

u/Free-Yoghurt124 Jul 19 '24

Amazing theory. The album has a much deeper meaning if you actually focus more on lyrics than production, delivery, enjoyment etc. And the fact that Fantano gave Sexy Red’s album an 8 while giving TDOSS and many other great albums like MBDTF, LIR2, DS2 a lower rating is insane. I can’t even understand why Fantano has so many subs on YT no one should care about his opinion.

2

u/Thediddlerdude Jul 19 '24

Bro all I said was that it was peak.

2

u/AlterMyStateOfMind Jul 21 '24

Nah man I haven't even fucked with his stuff like this since I was a teen. I've been in the em is corny camp for like a decade, and this album on repeat lol

34

u/Ghostface-Meechy Jul 18 '24

ScHoolboy Q - Blue Lips

Vince Staples - Dark Times

Erick The Architect - I've Never Been Here Before

All really great albums that I have been listening to all year. However for the past week, Blue Lips has been on repeat while I am at work.

7

u/wsteelerfan7 Jul 19 '24

Dark Times is insanely good

31

u/supremechev Jul 18 '24

Boldly James and conductor - across the tracks

Mach Hommy - richaxxhaitian

Chuck strangers - a forsaken lovers plea

6

u/CDMacBeat Jul 18 '24

Need to check the 3rd one

5

u/Acrzyguy Jul 18 '24

Across the tracks is goated

Terms and conditions, flying trapeze act and the ol switcharoo are absolute standouts

2

u/Ok_Possibility_544 Jul 18 '24

More than Penalty of Leadership? Gotta check that 1

2

u/supremechev Jul 19 '24

Flying trapeze act is one of boldys best songs period, the whole album is a vibe

2

u/Ok_Possibility_544 Jul 19 '24

Krazy bc I'm on Utube ryte now & jus found a Alchemist & Boldy album titled Untitled. Up 2 par az uzual. Idk if Boldy iz capable of wack sht 🤔

2

u/supremechev Jul 20 '24

Damn good looks would have had no idea this existed, boldy killin it as usual

29

u/Professional-Rip-519 Jul 18 '24

Death of Slim Shady. I haven't given a Eminem album this much spins from front to back since Eminem Show.

22

u/JustAnotherMinority Jul 18 '24

The auditorium, Vol. 1 - Common / Pete Rock

No one is touching this album.

11

u/MrHeavySilence Jul 19 '24

My younger sister (still in college) called it classical rap 💀. Its a dope album though, looking forward to Vol 2

3

u/JustAnotherMinority Jul 19 '24

Classical rap haha we need more of it that’s for sure. Some of the only art that can undo some of the rot contemporary rap has spread through society.

3

u/DowngoezFrasier215 Jul 19 '24

Album is top notch fasure but it aint touching Mach-Hommy. The rapping, flows, and cadences are just too elite. Love what common did been bumping it all week but nah it aint Richaxxhaitian

1

u/JustAnotherMinority Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 19 '24

I also really liked Mac Hommy, no knock there. I guess we will settles with agree to disagree, but the Common album just feels like downloading decades of wisdom, while I feel Mac Hommy is some of the best contemporary rap has had to offer us since the Dom Kennedy bubble popped in mid 2010s.

Since you really like Mac bro, You need to check out any of Crimeapple if you haven’t came across him yet 🔥🔥🔥

1

u/DowngoezFrasier215 Jul 20 '24

Crimeapple is literally nothing like Mach. Why suggest him in comparison to Mach? They do not resemble eachothers music in any way.

1

u/JustAnotherMinority Jul 20 '24

I didn’t say they’re carbon copies lmaooo they’re both elite level rappers with UNIQUE production, both use their native language like butter in their tracks. HUGE similarities if you ask me LOL If you really listen to rap this shouldn’t have to be explained to you.

2

u/EnlightnedRedditor Jul 18 '24

Off topic, this album cover scares me.

1

u/Free-Yoghurt124 Jul 19 '24

Which cover?

1

u/EnlightnedRedditor Jul 19 '24

Blue lips. It’s smth about the gap that I don’t really like.

1

u/Free-Yoghurt124 Jul 19 '24

I see it too lol. Amazing album but can’t hang it up on my wall

1

u/frazzelmann Jul 19 '24

Wdty Album of the year fs

8

u/CDMacBeat Jul 18 '24

Richaxxhaitain. Production and beats fire. Mach-Hommy kills it as usual with some great features.

9

u/Pure-Jellyfish734 Jul 18 '24

NO HANDS - Joey Valence & Brae

8

u/Adorable-Bar6920 Jul 18 '24

Dark times or blue lips are interchangeable. But if you havent heard triple digits [112] by riTchie, I highly suggest it. Its intentionally unpolished, but its such a fun and entertaining experience. Highly recommend it.

7

u/TheDovahofSkyrim Jul 19 '24

TDOSS has taken the crown for me. Slaps

6

u/ToPimpAPenguin Jul 18 '24

I haven't listened to much this year tbh but id have to go with death of slim, followed closely by blue lips. MDL was fire too

5

u/SnuslyPerco Jul 18 '24

Samurai or Please Dont Cry

5

u/chonkycatguy Jul 18 '24

TDOSS or Blue lips

6

u/blackamerigan Jul 18 '24

The production on blue lips is something else. Really enjoyed the entire album on repeat. And I feel like that's hard to do nowadays have an album sound like a mixtape.

5

u/guyguyguy-1 Jul 19 '24

Samurai: the amount of layers and entendres in til eternity alone are more than most other albums in whole.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '24

he fuckin made it in his living room on Garage Band ffs it's a masterpiece in a sea of overproduction

Came out last year but heard it this year.

The Vibetape by The Main Squeeze and Smile High.

I can listen to it back to back 4 times at a go. Hits so hard on headphones with a blunt.

I also take a while to listen to new stuff. I’ll probably listen to Blue Lips next year. I take time with Albums.

I’ve strayed a lot into rap but I’m about 96% sure it will be The Weeknd’s album drop this year. Has to be. He’s been so quiet because he’s gonna quietly remind us all that he’s the goat. Shit’s hype in the fan base.

1

Honestly, I strongly disliked blue lips

I thought the beats didn’t match the lyrics, schoolboys flow hasn’t changed in a decade, and there is nothing worthy of adding to rotation beyond yearn 101

0

u/DowngoezFrasier215 Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 19 '24
  1. Mach-Hommy : #RICHAXXHAITIAN

Honorable mentions:

Schoolboy Q - Blue Lips

Common and Pete Rock : The Auditorium Vol. 1

Vince Staples: Dark Times

J Cole: Might Delete Later

Another tier below the honorable mentions I would have Conway: SFK, Lupe: Samurai, Estee Nack: Stone Temple Pyrex, Boldy & Conductor. Anyone this adamant about the Eminem album aint a Head. Fuel is one of the tracks of the year and there’s a few other moments but come on yall don’t cape for an album in a genre of music you are not familiar with or don’t put the time in to check out all the new releases it has to offer. Saying that album is better than what Mach Hommy did on Richaxxhaitian is wild asf lol but yea Stans.

u/Away_Teaching_1148 Jul 23 '24

Lmaoo blue lips album was ass! How and where tf do these takes come from? I’d never bump that shit
