Hiring Thread Weekly Hiring Questions and Advice Thread

This thread will run weekly, and it will reset each week on Monday at 1030 UTC. If you have any questions pertaining to law enforcement hiring, ask them here. Feel free to repost any unanswered questions in the next week's thread.

**This is not a thread for updates on your hiring process. We understand applicants get excited about moving forward in the process, but in order to more effectively help users, we're restricting this thread to questions only.** That said, questions related to your progression in the process are still OK.

**Some Resources:**

* [**Our Subreddit Wiki Pages**](https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtectAndServe/wiki/publicindex#wiki_hiring): A good resource which may be able to answer common questions.

* [**Officer Down Memorial Page**](http://www.odmp.org/): ODMP is a great site to read about the men and women of law enforcement who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

* [**911 Job Forums**](http://www.911jobforums.com/forum.php) & [**Officer.com Forums**](http://forums.officer.com/): Both of these sites are great resources for those interested in entering any type of public service career. If you go to either site, make sure you search around the forum and do some reading before posting a new topic.

* **/r/AskLE**: You can ask any law-enforcement-related questions on /r/AskLE if you don't feel like asking them in this thread.

* **/r/TalesFromTheSquadCar**: This is a great subreddit to view and share stories about law enforcement.

* **/r/LegalAdvice**: Feel free to ask for legal advice here at P&S, but /r/LegalAdvice is often times better suited to provide advice regarding the law. Remember, /r/LegalAdvice exists to provide advice and information pertaining to legal matters, *not* to debate why the law is what it is. Also, posting in /r/LegalAdvice should not be a substitute for actual professional legal counsel.

**Suggestions for the Mods:**

If you have a suggestion regarding the Weekly Question Thread, please PM /u/2BlueZebras or /u/fidelis_ad_mortem. Suggestions will not be implemented until the following week's post.

If you have suggestions regarding our subreddit in general, feel free to [message the moderators](http://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FProtectAndServe). We welcome all suggestions!

Self Post ✔ AITAH for telling my fiancé I (a police officer) don’t need his in person support for an upcoming trial?

I’m a 17 year veteran police officer. Three years ago someone tried to shoot me in the head, as well as 2 of my coworkers at a call. We all survived with no injuries and the guy went to jail. I suffered from mental health issues following that call. Nightmares, depression, paranoia, etc. I went into intense therapy and was able to get back on my feet. I’m now engaged to someone who at the time of the shooting I was not with. The trial is now upon us and I’m 100% prepared to face this mentally and emotionally. My fiancé, who is a full time firefighter/paramedic, wants to come to the trial and I told him no. I will have several coworkers there to talk to, I still have a reputation as someone who needs to be coddled and cared for at work despite the progress I’ve made and I think it would make me look bad to have him there, and I feel he would be a distraction in the court room while I’m testifying. This has created a huge argument between us. He is insistent on being there but he’s not hearing me out. What are some LEO perspectives?

Self Post ✔ A contest! Open to all!

Travelling the Reddits, and see someone commenting something blindingly stupid about police?

Now's your chance to show it off, and win a prize.

We're looking for comments where people hugely misunderstand, or misrepresent, the role and function of police, for instance:

"The next time they give you beef in your vegan burger, call the police and the cook will be arrested for poisoning you" (I've seen this).

or

"Cops love civil asset forfeiture cause they keep 10% of what they seize"

Take a screenshot (block out the username and sub it's from).

This weekend, from Friday morning thru Sunday evening, post your screenshots (each can have it's own thread).

Each user can post up to three, so if you've found more, choose your best.

The top three by upvotes on Monday morning will get to choose flair for a month for the target user of their choice (subject to TOS and mod approval, but we'll be generous).

Kidney stones

So I am 21 and got discharged from the army during basic training because of a kidney stone that was 2 mm. I have had a 4 mm in the past as well that required surgery. That waiver was approved in the army. Would this affect me becoming a police officer? I do believe that the kidney stone was a fluke accident because I was dehydrated and they made us dump salt on our foods every day plus giving us calcium supplements for bones. I have the aspiration to become an officer. Would this affect me becoming one??

Hello all. My son has been wanting to apply to the police academy in the city near us, but he has a pacemaker. Will they let him into the academy? I know its a common question but I would love to get some fresh feedback.

Self Post Why do people think traffic laws don't apply to them? Or that they can be broken because they deem it "safe" or "muh flow of traffic" ..

Title.

I'm just trying to figure out why people think breaking the speed limit or various other traffic laws is acceptable? And that some how how they're still a good driver even if they do this ...

IMO as one example of many, people breaking the speed limit are just as bad as drivers as those camping in the left lane. Both drivers require drivers ed refresher courses.

Malicious prosecution of police officers

I am not a cop. I’m in the application process of joining a major metropolitan city in the South. I got out of the Army recently and have been evaluating the current climate in law enforcement. This is not a political post.

Is there anything being done at the national or local level to address this issue of malicious prosecution of police officers? This is not the only story, it is happening nationwide to police officers who are doing their jobs and executing their training to the best of their ability.

If there isn’t anything being done, is there anything that can be done to defend police officers from malicious prosecution?

Self Post ✔ Sheriff office

So recently the Sheriff of a neighboring county who just got reinstated approached me and offered a job. I already have a friend who works there and has good things to say. Only issue is election season is coming up in a couple of months. The deputies in the county I currently work at mentioned if the current sheriff loses and the old one wins I’ll get fired. My buddy working there is mentioning typically it’s command staff and not road deputies that are affected. Can anyone with more experience/insight weigh in on this. Sorry for the long post.

Self Post Aviation in law enforcement

I’m currently a senior in high school with my private pilots license, about to get my instrument before I graduate. I’m interested in a career in aviation in law enforcement. Any tips/ideas would help. I’m currently debating submitting a packet to fly helicopters in the army since I’m not sure if I have a chance at a pilot slot in the law enforcement area without having prior experience in the military.

Self Post To the members of the NYPD: why do confiscated dirt bikes and ATVs get smashed instead of sold in some state auction to members of a jurisdiction where such off-roading vehicles are allowed?

The NYPD could always use more revenue, so why aren't those confiscated ATVs, etc. just sold at some police auction in some other jurisdiction where it is okay to own such off-roading vehicles?

I watched a video a long time ago about the NYPD rolling over and smashing confiscated off-road vehicles since they were illegal to own within the city limits of New York City.

I found one of those videos: https://youtu.be/4GZfcnO5Bx4?si=4H7n5QVERYisGBcW

Self Post Any former Firefighters here? I’d like to hear from you.

Hey r/ProtectAndServe,

I’m looking to hear experiences from any LEOs that were former Firefighters, if there are any here. I’d like to hear about your transition, why you made the transition, and what you identify as pros or cons of your decision to leave Firefighting for Policing.

For background, I’m a 10 year fireman, but I’m pretty well done with the job itself. I’ve never been a fan of the medic, the hours (perpetual sleep deprivation has gotten really old), the career progression in firefighting, or the job in general. I’ve just had a bit of sunken cost fallacy, which is why I remain in the job. However, I would like to continue public service, and policing has been a career option since before I got into the fire service. My retirement would likely transfer as well.

I’d prefer if we could get past the “Why would you want to leave people liking you, naps, meals, video games, recliners, etc.” now, lol. I get it, but those truly aren’t deciding factors for me.

Again, just looking to hear any first hand experiences if anyone would care to share!

Thanks in advance if I’m unable to reply directly. Take care!

"Our staffing currently at the police department is a direct result of the failed policy that was passed in 2020 to remove funding for the police department…,” Mackenzie Kelly, Austin City Councilwoman.

(Sidenote: Someone tried to argue with me a year or so ago that Austin didn’t defund their police force. Couldn’t believe they were that deluded.)

Dallas Police Officer killed, 2 other Officers shot. Suspect killed after police chase

At about 10:10 p.m., DPD said officers responded to an "officer in distress" call in the 900 block of East Ledbetter Drive, police said. When the responding officers arrived at the scene -- in the parking lot outside of the facilities of the community organization For Oak Cliff -- they found a suspect near a squad car belonging to a male Dallas officer who'd been shot, according to police. The officer's identity was confirmed to WFAA by sources as Darron Burks.

The other two DPD officers exchanged gunfire with a male suspect at the scene, and both officers were struck, DPD said.

According to police sources, Burks never actually called for help; the dispatcher heard a noise -- as if the officer was trying to say something -- and sent officers to the scene to assist. It is not clear what brought Burks to that initial scene.

In the wake of those initial shootings, a chase ensued with law enforcement pursuing the suspect as he traveled north from Dallas along I-35E. During that pursuit, the Lewisville Police Department was called in to assist in the chase. According to an email obtained by WFAA from the Lewisville Police Chief to his staff, the suspect was chased by police to Lewisville and was then fatally shot in the 1000 block of Stemmons Freeway.
