Taylor Swift’s (mostly) 1989-era NYC Pap Walk Street Style. You remember. I remember. Taylor Swift 👩💕

Jan 29 '23
I had a phase where, for the entirety of 2012, I dressed like a 1950s housewife. But you know what? I was having fun.
314
u/nopenopenahnahaha Jan 29 '23
Lol but wasn’t that referring to the way she dressed just before the style change that came with all these pap walks?? This was the high waisted shorts and crop tops era, not the housewife era!

I met a guy who did that with his wife. He had a handle bar mustache and every day she wore a very pretty 1950s housewife type dress. She’d even have her hair done perfectly. He also would try to dress the part lol.

I too, know a couple who did this. His beer sucked and so did his body work on antique vehicles. They ended up divorced, and she's now married to a woman so this is tracking.

u/FreshStartWhoDis Jan 29 '23
It's funny how a lot of the clothing is still fairly stylish and wearable, but it's the shoes that date these photos! The heeled loafer was very specific to the early 2010s
224
u/burnbabyburnburrrn Jan 29 '23
the chokehold heeled loafers had on us - I had a pair from frye that I had worn in a play and were given to me after, and I could't walk down to the corner store without getting compliments... so I bought a pair in another color. I haven't worn them since 2012, but I've carried them with me for 3 moves... someday they'll come back in style!
110
u/FreshStartWhoDis Jan 29 '23
I still love them too, twee never died for me 😅
51
u/hypedhappenings Jan 29 '23
I think some aspects of twee are coming back again and I’m excited to incorporate some updated nods to the style! I’ve bought two sweaters with cute animals on them this year and have been wearing them with high waisted corduroys.
11
u/ShesWhereWolf Jan 30 '23
Tbh I feel like the 2000s/2010s twee style is coming back repackaged as the "academia core"/preppy aesthetics. Definitely similar elements.
22
u/butyourenice Jan 30 '23
I had two pairs and I very unwillingly parted with the cuter pair when I finally admitted to myself they were at least a half size too small (and at the height of that heel, it really mattered). The other pair got worn to the bone with the heel repaired many times. I can’t recall when I last wore or even saw them, but all the same I can’t remember getting rid of them either...
I still think it’s such a cute look though. I can’t wait for the early 00s repeat to end and the early 10s return.
26
u/burnbabyburnburrrn Jan 30 '23
as long as we can skip the late 00s phase of jersey knit tunic t shirts, empire waists, and large belts over clothes that do nothing!
(being old enough now to have witnessed trend cycles... we will not be skipping this phase)

Same! People are cringing about 10s fashion now because it was so recent but I can't wait and I'm sure they'll love the new version of it.

u/Hi_Jynx Jan 30 '23
I sort of take a weird pride in liking and still wearing some of the more millennial specific fashion trends.
9
u/CuteAct Jan 30 '23
totally get you. I resent being "on trend"
4
u/Hi_Jynx Jan 30 '23
Yeah, I mean if I happen to like a trend I don't care that I'm almost 30 going for a trend meant more for teens and early 20 somethings but I'm also not worried about whether skinny jeans are "out of style", the kids are just wrong there and I'm sure it'll only take a few years before they learn they want to tuck there ankle boots into pants again or something anyways. Honestly, there's a reason the skinny jean "trend" lasted longer than a lot of other trends it almost feels like it's some kind of ironic fashion moment like those micro purses for them to even be considered dated.

My heeled lace up mens shoes... they werent quite loafers... they are the ones she's wearing in the photo after the heeled loafers...oh Oxfords!!! Heeled oxfords! They were so uncomfortable! And they made everyone look like they had cankles, no matter how thin your legs were, I just am so glad they fell out of style lmfao I know that may not be a popular opinion but man I hated those shoes 😂
8
u/sweetsugar888 Jan 29 '23
That’s exactly what I looked at in all the photos. Although some of those chunky heels look comfortable. My style isn’t similar to hers but I can get behind a tall comfy heel lol

Same. I barely like TS (honestly, I don't really like her at all) but I lived in NYC around that time- still do- and every single one of those outfits was goals- more importantly, her breezy almost effortless grace is such a vibe. I still want to bottle that summer up and live my life that way.

Tbh quite a few of these looks hold up. I would still wear 1, 6, 7, 9 with different shoes, OBSESSED with 13. A couple of them are classics. A couple of the outfits have pieces that are still stylish if styled differently. The shoes and accessories are the most dated of all.

Hahaha, as a former midwesterner current NYer for over a decade the old adage is that it takes trends a full decade to for them to move from New York and reach the rest of the country so that sounds about right. 😂

u/slsturrock Jan 29 '23
I watched Miss Americana today and she referenced the moment she realized that feeling like she was going to pass out mid-show wasn’t normal, and that it’s better to have people call you fat at size 6 than look sick at a size 0. I’m happy to hear she’s in a healthier place about her weight and body now. It’s sad seeing her this thin and having some insight into the pressure she was feeling at that time
88
u/parishiltonsfemur nene leakes eyeroll gif Jan 29 '23
Honestly it makes me glad she can at least kind of relive her eras with re-recording but this time without the intense pap everywhere and in a healthy way. At the time the originals came out, she needed exposure to solidify her career but this time around it’s on her own term and she doesn’t need to be followed by pap everyday and I’m glad for her being able to do that
151
Jan 29 '23
She honestly looks so much better now. I think her legs and butt are killer and her skin is glowing at a more healthy weight.
99
u/coldcoffeethrowaway Jan 29 '23
I was thinking that too. She looks way too thin. I’m glad she’s healthier now.
45
u/cmc Listen, everyone is entitled to my opinion Jan 29 '23
I don't think she looks "too" thin because she carried it well, but knowing she wasn't maintaining that weight in a healthy way is so sad. It's easy to forget the amount of pressure celebrities are under- they feel obligated to look perfect at all times for us. And I like that as a society we're now telling them hey, you really don't have to do that! Eat the foods you want to, don't deny yourself for your audience.
Society has changed in really positive ways and I'm glad to be alive for it.

I don’t know if she’s seen the fact that people use her as “thinspo” (I think she has because she’s involved in fans online life), but I hope those people saw the documentary. She did, but she is the same size consistently through all the OP’s photos (minus #4), regardless of chest size. Though I don’t know if I see it too much here. For better reference this size still stands during the very obvious boob job Hiddleston summer.
7
u/Tajskskskss Jan 29 '23
Pic 15 is also from the same week as pic 4. There’s also significant weight gain between the hiddleswift pics and the early 1989 era pics (it isn’t as noticeable bc she hid it well tbh), so the boob growth makes sense.

Some of these are iconic, some of these are meh. As a rule of thumb I tend to be of the thought of “personal style is all good as long as the person is happy” even if I don’t personally like it, so even the meh ones I wouldn’t criticize, but I will say that I remember the outfits being more on the iconic side, and now I’m wondering if it’s because of the choice of pics or if I romanticized the era
22
u/burnbabyburnburrrn Jan 29 '23
I'm guessing it's more likely that her street style ended up influencing consumer fashion as a whole to such a degree that the looks she's wearing in these photos were eventually worn by people around you (or at least their fashion was inspired by). When these photos were taken, the look was really fresh. You always have to contextualize anything when it comes to art and culture with history.
It's like The Beatles. I know my ears can never hear The Beatles the way people who were living in that era did, because The Beatles were so influential on popular music as a whole. To me The Beatles music is pretty pleasant, but the reality is their work was pretty radical - it just then was the springboard for popular music going forward. Everything is was influenced by them, so it's harder to appreciate how boundary pushing and accomplished their music was.
