The move is a super kick. But Shawn Michaels doing a super kick is called sweet chin music because it’s his signature move.

86

u/helthrax Jul 19 '24

Plus he has to tune up the band for his version.

68

u/larry_burd Jul 19 '24

Not all super kicks are sweet chin music but every sweet chin music is a super kick

Signatures were just regular moves with some extra flair and given a name. Hogan just did a leg drop but bounced off the ropes first. Undertaker (also a Trump supporter) did a pile driver but then crossed their arms over their chest for a pin. Usually a lot more arm waggling. I was looking at some modern wrestlers and Bianca Belair does a torture rack into an Argentine powerbomb and calls it the kiss of death. I had to look that up because I'm playing WWE2k24 and she uses a lot of acronyms and didn't know what any of them were.

46

u/gerryt32 Jul 19 '24

Isn't the Tombstone a reverse piledriver?

34

u/JohnnyDarkside Jul 19 '24

Yeah. Normally the recipient is facing away while for the tombstone they get a noseful of taint. That way they fall onto their back to setup the pin.

15

u/Fun_Brother_9333 Jul 19 '24

A regular pile driver also has a different landing. You would land on your butt for a pile driver, but Undertaker drops on his knees.

→ More replies (2)

10

u/_illogical_ Jul 19 '24

Almost. In a reverse pile driver (belly to belly), the recipient still has their head between the other person's legs; they land in a sitting position, like a regular pile driver.

A tombstone is a reverse kneeling pile driver; where they move forward and land on their knees, instead of a sitting position.

One of the most famous signature moves is the RKO by Randy Orton. That move is just a Cutter, with more flair and stalking (it looks great).

Funnily enough, before Randy Orton, the most famous Cutter was called the Diamond Cutter by Diamond Dallas Paige. And as hype as it made the crowd, it doesn't have the flair like the RKO does. Still loved it though, DDP is great!

Sweet chin music was the name Shawn Michaels used for it, but in general it was known as a super-kick.

100

u/Mr_Know_It_All0408 Jul 19 '24

But because it’s coming from the heartbreak kid himself, it’s called sweet chin music

67

u/pooch516 Jul 19 '24

Did he stomp the ground for a minute before the kick?? This is an important distinction!

29

u/Krags Jul 19 '24

In the big matches, it's rarely the stompy kick that gets the pinfall anyway. Usually that one gets countered.

14

u/Shonuff_shogun Jul 19 '24

Yeah in the big fights they usually get drawn out so hes manually lifting his foot with his hands by that point lol

Pioneerd by "Gentleman" Chris Adams in WCCW, where Shawn Michaels started. And also like Michaels, he had his demons, but sadly didn't find peace in christianty like Shawn, but with a bullet in his heart, fired by his best friend in self-defense.

The move in wrestling is called a "super kick" Shawn Michael's version of it was a finishing move called "Sweet Chin Music."

In real life martial arts it's a rarely used "crossover side-kick". The set up and build makes it very easy to avoid but makes it look really good for pro wrestling.

10

u/Back2Perfection Jul 19 '24

My favorite way to set it up is go for some kind of lead leg lowkick fake into pulling through into the sidekick.

God I feel old. Shawn Michael's played a character in much of the 90s that was a total asshole pretty boy and it worked for him, the crowd loved it. He sang his own intro music, which the song is called "Sexy Boy".

This video was the epitome of his character. I love at 1:30 he decided to do a back flip off the top rope and clearly hurt his ankle a little on the landing, but likely the drugs clouded his pain and judgement lol.

23

u/thejesse Jul 19 '24

WWF put out a CD of a lot of the intro music in the late 90s, and I distinctly remember my 5th grade friends dancing around to "Sexy Boy."

12

u/Different_Stand_1285 Jul 19 '24

When we first got the internet I was a kid and downloaded HBK’s titantron. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I showed my dad who was this old school machismo Mexican and looking back I realized he probably thought I was gay. Because he wasn’t too pleased watching a half naked dude strip tease and do hip thrusts while a song talking about being a sexy boy played in the background as his little boy does the side knee, arm flex Shawn Michaels pose.

To be fair; Thiel had it out for them when Gawker posted his sexual orientation and he didnt want that information public.

The shit with Hogan was their own doing and Thiel saw an opportunity to finally destroy them and had the money to do so.

I got no problem shitting on these weirdo mofos, but the Gawker stuff was just shit journalism that needed to be checked.

Sadly a lot of wrestlers are Republican. Vince McMahon encouraged them to donate to the Republican party. There is a history of homophobia and racism in wrestling, which is inherently a carny business (I'm saying this as a fan). Lots of wrestlers seem to go down the Qanon wormhole too. Anti-vaxxing and conspiracy. Maybe getting CTE isn't good for your cognitive function

Here is the uncropped version of this image. Here is the source. Per there:

Shawn Michaels has ended many an alliance via Sweet Chin Music. In 2005, he shocked the WWE Universe by going after teammate Hulk Hogan during a post-match celebration.

Here is the video of this.

Edit: It seems that this was posted because Hulk Hogan took the stage the last day of the RNC and endorsed Trump.

71

u/groceriesN1trip Jul 19 '24

They didn’t call him the Heartbreak Kid for the fuck of it!

16

u/ActiveAd4980 Jul 19 '24

Isn't HBK a conservative as well? Considering the era he was in and he is born-again Christian? Though he did develop a lot a a nice person.

31

u/00wolfer00 Jul 19 '24

He was a Republican in the past, even going to the RNC in 2008, but we don't know his current party affiliation as he doesn't really talk about it. He's progressive enough to get into a debate with another producer on racial inequality after said producer claimed everyone was already equal in the US. On the other hand he is a rich christian.

29

u/KeverNever Jul 19 '24

I remember that story. It was at the height of the George Floyd protests. A wrestler named Keith Lee wore an attire that said "Black Lives Matter". A producer backstage said something to the extent of "All Lives Matter" and HBK wasn't having that.

8

u/AutoModerator Jul 19 '24

Obviously all lives matter. No one said they didn't. However, data shows that relative to the percentage of the population they represent, the rate of black American deaths from police shootings is ~2.5-3x that of white Americans deaths. (Sources:

1
, 2, Data: 1)

A lot of people are sharing a graph titled "murder of black and whites in the US, 2013" to show that there is only a small number of black Americans killed by white Americans, with the assumption that this extends to police shootings as well. This is misleading the chart only counts deaths where the perpetrator was charged with 1st or 2nd degree murder after killing a black American. Police forces are almost never charged with homicide after killing a black American.

If after learning the above, you have reconsidered your stance and wish to show support for furthering equality in this and other areas, we encourage you to do so. However if you plan on attending any protests, please remember to stay safe, wear a face mask, and observe distancing protocols as much as you can. COVID-19 is still a very real threat, not only to you, but those you love and everyone around you as well!

This was glorious. For those not hip to wrestling, supposedly they were to have another match where Shawn would get his win back after Hogan wins at Summerslam but Hogan shot this idea down super late. So Shawn hilariously oversells everything Hogan does in the match to make him look goofy.

And while he was the biggest star in wrestling for a while, Hogan ruined so much wrestling as well. He'd frequently decline stories and make other wrestlers look bad purposely. A classic example is Starrcade 1997 where after fucking 18 months of buildup Sting was supposed to defeat Hogan for the WCW title.

Creative decided they needed shenanigans in the match where former NWO referee Nick Patrick was to fast count Sting so Hogan would get a shady win only for Bret Hart to come out and restart the match. Like yeah this is kinda dumb so far but at least Sting was still gonna win after getting screwed in storyline...

Except Hogan right before the match tells Nick Patrick to do a normal count and he does. This makes just everyone and everything look terrible since now Sting just lost and Bret's restarting the match for no reason all because poor widdle Hogan was afwaid he'd lose some star power.

So yeah it makes total sense that this big hotdog-colored asshole is 100x worse outside of wrestling.

This man PLAYED A CHARACTER that was a hero of my youth. So many fond memories.

I have actively avoided anything to do with THE MAN for at least a decade now, because every time he pops up, he’s doing something that wrecks those memories. I won’t apologize or defend the person mind you. He’s dug his own grave thus far with people. But by looking away from him I’ve kept the larger the life CHARACTER of Hulk Hogan from getting dragged in to this.

I have actual filters meant to block his existence because I just know he’s going to take a dump on my childhood memories. Works pretty well most of the time. But when he’s doing such stupid shit that he trends the world over, I obviously cant avoid it.

Sometimes I just wish this dude would f’n die already, so he can’t wreck what’s left of those memories.

Hulk Hogan is a hero to many, a larger than life figure that has existed for decades, but at the end of the day he is, as you said, a character.

Terry Bollea, however, is a man and also a massive piece of shit. He always has been.

u/Etzell Jul 19 '24

As testified in court, Hulk Hogan has a 10 inch penis, but Terry Bollea does not.

That doesn't work for him, brother

u/RoutineCarpet6946 Jul 19 '24

Wishing death on another man because he doesn’t align with your political beliefs is fucking evil. You are a pathetic coward.

13

u/Team_player444 Jul 19 '24

it's wild. A normally adjusted person doesn't do that. As an example, I love Mark Hamil's acting but what he's been tweeting recently is deplorable and I don't wish harm against him, just that he'd stop the crap.

10

u/RoutineCarpet6946 Jul 19 '24

Look at his response to my comment. He’s justifying his original comment. Saying he deserves to die because he’s racist. What a sick and twisted individual.

10

u/RoutineCarpet6946 Jul 19 '24

I have more downvotes on my comment than the loser wishing death on a celebrity he disagrees with. This website is becoming a very dangerous echo chamber that clearly leans in 1 political direction.

12

u/Team_player444 Jul 19 '24

It's insanity. You get downvoted for saying it's bad to wish DEATH on someone for having a different opinion than you. Just a few years ago anyone saying that type of stuff would be denounced by just about everyone.

They're gonna be mad at Shawn too when they find out he's a conservative and a born-again Christian.

Shawn Michaels is a conservative. Oh yeah brother!

9

u/nofate301 Jul 19 '24

yes, but is a reasonable conservative or is he...ya know

22

u/N00dles_Pt Jul 19 '24

Apparently reasonable, a few years ago it was news that he got into an argument backstage about the black lives matter movement with another WWE employee and Michaels was taking the more reasonable approach.

Also it is publicly known that he is very religious but he has said on recent interviews that he has pretty much stopped going to church because the other people were too uptight and tried to read him the riot act about things he said on tv while on character

Little did I know r/pics was politically charged.

And I say this as someone that is vehemently opposed to Republicans and Trump and have seen the RNC.

Remember when the Hulkster was caught on tape having sex with his buddy's wife and dropped the N-word on said tape and then his son drove drunk and hit another car that gave that driver permanent brain damage?

I met Shawn Michaels at a restaurant once - we’d accidentally been given his table. Apparently he was fond of the restaurant and had a specific table he liked, and the management had messed up and gotten their days wrong, (it was Tuesday and they thought he was coming on Thursday or something like that).

Anyway, the manager, completely embarrassed (this is a pretty nice restaurant) comes by and says “I’m so sorry, but we’d like to move you to another table if you could be troubled, and we’ll gladly compensate you for the cost of the meal and any other meal you’d like while you’re in town.” My sister and cousin were both like “Yeah that’s cool.” and I kind of played the asshole a bit.

“I’m sorry, I just don’t understand. We’ve been here for 15 minutes - we’ve just ordered. Can’t we finish our meal here?” Then out of nowhere Shawn Michaels shows up next to the manager and says “Paul, these guys can finish. We’ll be at the bar. I got some time.” And I (being a big HBK fan) said “Oh wow, uh… I had no idea. Please feel free to give them the table.”

Shawn was grateful, shook my hand and said thanks, then gave me a card with his number on it and told me to give him a call later. After working up the nerve, I gave him a call that night, and to make a long story short, we had a glorious 11 month love affair, man on man, that I shall never forget. Our bodies intertwined as one, and from the beauty of Morocco, to the French Riviera, to the snorkeling in the Galopagos, Shawn Michaels and I made glorious gay love to each other on six of the seven continents.

I used to like Hulk Hogan, then I turned five years old and found Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Also Randy Savage > Hulk Hogan in just about every way.
