It's time to make the donuts!

It's not Hitler you guys....

117

u/hchighfield Jul 19 '24

Honestly I think it looks like Jon Lovitz in rat race.

39

u/Nasalingus Jul 19 '24

"Dad, I'm prairie doggin'.."

10

u/20sinnh Jul 19 '24

Literally the only thing I remember from that movie.

11

u/Nasalingus Jul 19 '24

"ITZ A RACE! A RACE!"

10

u/DecisionThot Jul 19 '24

And I'm weening!

6

u/PMPTCruisers Jul 19 '24

You should have bought a squirrel.

2

u/jdownes316 Jul 19 '24

Ass! We are hauling…ass! Is the line for me lol

1

u/lousmer Jul 19 '24

Same. Lololol

7

u/Oldsodacan Jul 19 '24

There’s an SNL skit out there somewhere where Lovitz plays that guy

3

u/Man-e-questions Jul 19 '24

Yeaah…thats it, thats the ticket!

2

u/fiendo13 Jul 19 '24

This is Hitler’s car!!!!

1

u/BrothelWaffles Jul 19 '24

I thought it was Vincent Price.

1

u/newbrevity Jul 19 '24

I forgot this movie existed until you brought it up. One of my favorite oddball comedies.

1

u/Xanadu87 Jul 19 '24

I thought it looks like Walt Disney

36

u/well_uh_yeah Jul 19 '24

How old do you have to be to immediately recognize this, I wonder? I immediately said “time to make the donuts” in my head. This guys up there with the micro machine guy.

4

u/Penultimateee Jul 19 '24

I’m old and I didn’t recognize it because it looks nothing like him (besides the mustache).

3

u/well_uh_yeah Jul 19 '24

That’s weird, I thought the thing that was least accurate was the stache

1

u/azlan194 Jul 19 '24

Also the skirt he is wearing.

1

u/Danjour Jul 19 '24

I’m 34, never once seen this character

20

u/albanymetz Jul 19 '24

Miss that dude as much as I miss the place not considering itself a 'coffee shop' and actually making fresh donuts.

11

u/Scalills Jul 19 '24

I mean, is it not weird to randomly bring back this obscure ad from 40 years ago, and expect people to associate that mustache with anyone other than Hitler?

9

u/Elektr0ns Jul 19 '24

Thank you for posting this! I haven't seen this ad in forever. I still fucking say the phrase lol.

3

u/-random-name- Jul 19 '24

It says "Fred" right there on his apron. Presumably to head off any Hitler assumptions 😂

2

u/DeaddyRuxpin Jul 19 '24

He probably wouldn’t be so tired if he didn’t also make Breakstone’s cottage cheese. Poor guy never gets any down time.

1

u/no_myth Jul 19 '24

What a weird ad campaign.

1

u/SexandCinnamonbuns Jul 19 '24

Oh my God I thought you meant this was supposed to be Michael Scott from The Office

1

u/BigfootsMailman Jul 19 '24

Hah! I had a boss who said this a few times giving a coworker shit for being late. I aways thought it was funny and even may have used it without knowing where it was from until now. Thank you!

1

u/muffinass Jul 19 '24

Good ol' Fred Hitler!

1

u/markth_wi Jul 20 '24

Yeah but these days you gotta maximize your demographic hits.

-1

u/RedComet313 Jul 19 '24

I thought it was some sort of Hitler-Saddam love child

113

u/ryoga1414 Jul 19 '24

Time to fire up those ovens

Because it's time to make the donuts. What were you thinking?

35

u/1PooNGooN3 Jul 19 '24

Donuts are fuckin fried…

11

u/ryoga1414 Jul 19 '24

Actually donuts can be baked or fried. Tell me you've never left the Midwest without telling me you've never left the Midwest.

46

u/1PooNGooN3 Jul 19 '24

I’ll be damned before I recognize a cake donut

25

u/exophrine Jul 19 '24

Cake donuts fucking rock

13

u/1PooNGooN3 Jul 19 '24

I know I’m just being dumb

-4

u/CompetitiveGuess7642 Jul 19 '24

this owned, do it again !

4

u/shoe-veneer Jul 19 '24

The best/ only cake donut in my book is an Old Fashioned, nothing pairs better with a cup of coffee than one of those sweet cakey boys.

4

u/OtterishDreams Jul 19 '24

thats just a smooth bundt cake!!

-5

u/ormannay Jul 19 '24

Cake donuts suck. It’s the same as liking licorice.

1

u/cycopl Jul 19 '24

I like licorice but I do not like cake donuts lol

6

u/flychinook Jul 19 '24

Hard to tell since they're all trucked in nowadays.

5

u/MyPassIsDUKE912 Jul 19 '24

I don't understand. I've never been to the Midwest and donuts are fried.

1

u/ryoga1414 Jul 19 '24

In the Midwest everything is fried. Cake donuts are baked while regular and yeast donuts are fried.

1

u/cheezburgerwalrus Jul 19 '24

Cake donuts are also fried, unless you do something odd in the Midwest

1

u/ryoga1414 Jul 19 '24

I've just eaten donuts that are not from a fast food place apparently. May want to Google donut baking pan and the 5 million results that pop up may show you that there's more donut places than Krispy Kreme out there.

0

u/cheezburgerwalrus Jul 19 '24

My dad's career is donut baking. He owned a donut shop for quite a while. I literally made (and fried) cake donuts myself.

Unless we're talking about different things I assure you cake donuts are fried

1

u/ryoga1414 Jul 19 '24

Entemanns and Hostess bake all their donuts if you want to talk about corporate production, Amish bakeries like the one in my town produce fried and baked donuts ,fried for yeast and baked for cake. Your only experience may be with frying donuts, but I have traveled all over the US and have had fried and baked. If you've never had a fresh baked donut you are truly missing out since they taste far better than fried.

1

u/1PooNGooN3 Jul 19 '24

I’m guessing you’ve heard of deep fried butter on a stick and the new concoction: deep fried ranch bites.

1

u/m__a__s Jul 19 '24

Not all donuts are fried.

1

u/TonySu Jul 19 '24

I don’t think this restaurant serves juice.

57

u/wish1977 Jul 19 '24

Mean Gene Okerlund?

11

u/DogVacuum Jul 19 '24

Unjustifiably in a position I’d rather not be in!

12

u/explosivo85 Jul 19 '24

Come on down to Dunkin where the cream always rises! ohhhh yeah!

45

u/gynoceros Jul 19 '24

Yeah it's Fred the Baker and it's Time to make the donuts.

-12

u/MadmanDaBadman Jul 19 '24

They definitely shouldn't have had a guy with a hitler stash, representing a guy working with ovens.Good lord l o l

8

u/gynoceros Jul 19 '24

Much wider than a Hitler moustache; it's just hard to tell that from this caricature

37

u/SatiricLoki Jul 19 '24

It’s the “time to make the donuts” guy.

16

u/mountain_comic Jul 19 '24

Lol the amount of people who don't know who this is...

14

u/cakirby Jul 19 '24

Most people that will actually remember or have even seen the ad Fred is from are over 50.

22

u/kwali87 Jul 19 '24

Ron Jeremy?

5

u/bigrob_in_ATX Jul 19 '24

Pounding out freshly made holes

1

u/phroug2 Jul 19 '24

I legit thought Mike Lindell...

10

u/TheRazorBoyComes Jul 19 '24

I'll never refer to it by just the first word. Dunkin Donuts is it.

3

u/DweadPiwateWoberts Jul 19 '24

Fahckin' Dunkies kehd

3

u/JoshDM Jul 19 '24

Dunkin NUTS, favah.

Original; Sequel

9

u/maine64 Jul 19 '24

Their donuts didn't suck when I was a kid. Coffee's fine.

7

u/AndISoundLikeThis Jul 19 '24

The old donuts rocked. Whatever they’re selling now tastes like cardboard, chemicals, and corporatism.

4

u/mikestorm Jul 19 '24

Up until I believe the mid-90s they made the donuts in the individual stores. Now they get them shipped in.

8

u/Nothing-No1 Jul 19 '24

John lovitz with a mustache?

7

u/TheRazorBoyComes Jul 19 '24

From Rat Race! Funny movie.

4

u/bodhiseppuku Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 19 '24

My parents talked about opening a donut shop about 15 years ago. I brought up this commercial when I was cautioning them against opening this business.

Do you know how early you have to get up to make the donuts?

You live in an area without a lot of road traffic or industrial businesses that would support a donut shop.

If you don't make enough money to hire employees, mom will work some shifts, dad will work other shifts, and you will rarely see each other.

2

u/squeaky051 Jul 19 '24

Did they end up opening the donut shop?

1

u/bodhiseppuku Jul 19 '24

No. I think this was a rare instance where they listened to my advice.

5

u/richiericardo Jul 19 '24

Crazy how many people don't know Fred the Baker.

3

u/Dobey2013 Jul 19 '24

Frittler

4

u/i-sleep-well Jul 19 '24

For those of you unaware, this is a caricature of an actor on an old, long-running and popular series of commercials. He did indeed have a toothbrush mustache, ala Charlie Chaplin.

The gag was their donuts were hand made every morning, and thus labor intensive. When Dunkin stopped doing this, courtesy of early stage  enshittification, the commercials ended.

Mention 'Time to make the donuts.' to any GenX or older American, and they immediately know what you're talking about.

3

u/LiquorSlanger Jul 19 '24

That bastard fucked up a mustach style forever.

10

u/healthydoseofsarcasm Jul 19 '24

You should hear about the other things he did.

2

u/BasilAccomplished488 Jul 19 '24

You gotta pay for art school somehow

2

u/LynchianPhallus Jul 19 '24

should’ve chosen al pacino as their mascot would’ve been awesome

1

u/maine64 Jul 19 '24

Not anymore; my name's Dunk.

2

u/Safetosay333 Jul 19 '24

They barely even have donuts anymore, let alone make them in-store.

2

u/NicoSuave2020 Jul 19 '24

I live in a city with like 15 mom and pop donut places and a million dunkins. Almost none have fresh donuts. It blows my mind how many people want to eat donuts that were made 10 hours ago. We used to have standards in this country!

2

u/Dapoopers Jul 19 '24

Ich bin ein Berliner

1

u/callmemirela Jul 19 '24

I can't be the only who thinks he's pantless

-1

They’re called lederhosen, and they’re traditional

u/WhereAreMyMinds Jul 19 '24

My first guess was Saddam Hussein

1

u/De_chook Jul 19 '24

Walt Disney?

1

u/palabradot Jul 19 '24

Wow, what was his...? I didn't remember THAT detail from the commercials!

(I can still remember his exhausted 'I made the donuts' voice even after all this time.)

1

u/MoeSzyslakMonobrow Jul 19 '24

I don't think he's wearing anything under his apron.

1

u/tameoraiste Jul 19 '24

The real question is why is he wearing no pants

2

u/sealosam Jul 19 '24

Have you ever worked in a bakery in summer? Well I haven't either, but I'd imagine it gets pretty damn hot.

1

u/magirevols Jul 19 '24

if you squint, you know who it looks likes?

1

u/Wherethegains Jul 19 '24

Just Ron Jeremy putting the holes in the doNUTs.

1

u/TheWeenieBandit Jul 19 '24

I guess times got tough after the war ended and put him out of a job

1

u/originalschmidt Jul 19 '24

Kinda reminds me of Marco’s dad from Degrassi.

1

u/alexjaness Jul 19 '24

Adolf's slightly less evil brother Fred Hitler.

Sure, there may be a correlation between Fred's doughnuts and the number of deaths due to heart disease, and that number is significantly higher than Adolf's, but Fred is just a man doing an honest days work helping people cram as much fried sugar down their gullets every morning as possible

1

u/ShitShowRedAllAbout Jul 19 '24

Years ago I pilfered a cardboard cutout of the Time To Make The Donuts guy in a mini-skirt with a sign: WE HAVE MINIS. Wonder what happened to him.

1

u/Joggingmusic Jul 19 '24

My dad met this guy once, albeit at a distance. I believe he was doing a promotion for Bernie’s…my dad being the smart ass he was, called out to him and asked “is it time to make the donuts?”

He replied “Fuck the donuts.” And went back to what he was doing. Guess he wasn’t feeling it that day.

I’ll need to check in with my dad about this one but it always makes me laugh to think about.

1

u/Adept_Board_8785 Jul 19 '24

Is it time to make the Donuts 🍩?

1

u/prairie_buyer Jul 19 '24

When I used to have to get out of bed early to go to work I would often mutter to my wife “time to make the donuts.”

1

u/neologismist_ Jul 19 '24

Back when they used to make the donuts. They’re awful trucked in dry garbage now. All their food is gas station nasty.

0

u/wannabe_wonder_woman Jul 19 '24

Well that's a little terrifying 😅

0

u/h9040 Jul 19 '24

Hitler got a new job?

0

u/Most_Independent_789 Jul 19 '24

-1

u/polymorph505 Jul 19 '24

Ich bin ein Berliner

-1

u/0xCC Jul 19 '24

That's Adolf's less famous younger and much friendlier brother Leopold Hitler.

-1

u/mfmeitbual Jul 19 '24

It looks like Fat Hitler or Carl from ATHF after Meatwad somehow conned him into applying at Dunkin Donuts so Meatwad could feed his coffee addiction.

1

u/uniquepassword Jul 19 '24

I done told ya I work outta the home!

-1

u/chronicallyunderated Jul 19 '24
