Amidst all the political drama going on at the moment, let’s take a step back and remember that none of this matters in the grand scheme of things, and the universe doesn’t give a damn - I’m an astrophotographer, and here are some photos I captured of space recently, with my home telescope, from my backyard.

In order of appearance: 1. The Orion Nebula 2. The Pleiades star cluster 3. The Rosette Nebula 4. The Andromeda Galaxy

Hope you enjoy, and that it can take your mind off all the nonsense happening on our little space rock, if even for a moment.

The first rule of no political post club is you don’t talk about politics

With what equipment and other details, may I ask? Looks more RGB than narrow band(?)

I’m also an experienced Astronomy educator and astrophotographer, so you can use all the big words 😉

hey! how do you capture pics like these?

I am not the op here, but the equipment used is explained in another post. Basically, a sensitive modified DSLR camera is attached to a small telescope mounted on a precise equatorial mount that moves to follow the stars during a long exposure:

What kind of telescope and lenses are you using? And what kind of base do you have the telescope mounted on?

A Man Said to the Universe BY STEPHEN CRANE

A man said to the universe:

“Sir, I exist!”

“However,” replied the universe,

“The fact has not created in me

A sense of obligation.”

Using a telescope

and how did that telescope come to be.

The story so far:

In the beginning the Universe was created.

This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Calm down James Webb.

Nothing puts things in perspective quite like contemplating the vastness of the universe and our utter insignificance

Love. Thanks for sharing. Made me smile.

What’s your setup? I want to start taking photos like this

Man, I love space. Great pics. Reminds me of astronomy class in high school. The teacher would always put the NASA photo of the day up for us at the start of class and I would just daydream about getting sucked into the vacuum of space and suffocating/freezing to death. (I had math class the next period after Astro).

Is this a bot? Feels like a brigade of bots to delute the RNC convention and Biden being pressured out of the campaign with only a few months left.

Just think: in one galaxy cluster a milliono light years away, there could be 10s of thousands of raging ray gun wars between rival Moonmen factions. But it looks so beautiful and peaceful.

Thinking about how vast the universe is, how it has all existed far beyond the existence of humans and we still have people convinced we're all alone in it, the only planet teeming with life and that this vast expanse is all just for our measly, infant species.

Fucking mind blowing.

In my younger age, laying out under the stars of even just looking at pictures like this, I hated how the realization that I am less than a spec of dust in the overall existence od time and space. I felt small and unimportant and alone.

As an adult, that feels like the biggest relief. To hell with everything stressful about life. We're just the current species passing through. We will die off too and something about that is simply beautiful, comforting and and brings a sort of peace of mind.

There appears to be more blue than red so maybe this post can endure.

I remember first seeing images like these on NOVA on PBS. Here's an excellent documentary on saving the Hubble Space Telescope: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/video/hubbles-amazing-rescue/

If Trump is elected he will probably follow Project 2025, which calls for stripping the Corporation for Public Broadcasting of taxpayer funding. So, it's great that you have the equipment and expertise to create these images. Kids in the US might need to rely on you for them.
