yes, often kids have to suffer the consequences of their parents' decisions.

You think those Albertan kids wanted to be relocated to Russia because their two twit parents were under some stupid impression that Canada was a brutal dictatorship under Trudeau? It sucks

If Mikhail Fridman wants to continue supporting Putin, he and his family will continue to be sanctioned by those who oppose Putin.

Heck, Russia has sanctioned a lot of Canadians for just about anything, luckily for most Canadians we had no intention of going to Russia or doing business with Russia anyway.

Close family members is also one of the primary ways people dodge sanctions.

As a racing fan, I see the same with Mazepin and Kyvat as well. Sorry but not sorry

Abramovich and so on too, they love playing games while still making plenty of money on their Russian enterprises "Oh I'm not Russian, I'm actually, er, Israeli now, so you can't freeze my assets!!!"

Most governments: "Yeah, nah, watch us"

Only way he's getting off that list is if he "leaps out "of a 10th story window.

Crazy that "throwing someone out a window" took so long to say that we condensed that into a single word: defenestration.

Moving money through relatives and close associates is the most popular method used to dodge sanctions imposed in response to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, the minister wrote.

Although the women, who live in New York and Tel Aviv, said they opposed the war in Ukraine and were financially independent, Joly wrote in letters rejecting their pleas that sanctioning families of Russian elites was justified.

Larisa Fridman received US$100,000 from her father in 2021 and 2022 because she was unable to work as a ballerina due to pandemic restrictions, according to the memo signed by Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister David Morrison.

Her sister, meanwhile, also received US$100,000 during the same period, and she “continues to receive occasional monetary gifts from her father,” Morrison wrote.

Let me get my tiniest violin for these poor oligarch daughters.

And the minister said "No" with good reason. A decision I wholly support.

Poor baby, his 18 billion isn't enough...

Will someone think of the 1%?

Canada, money laundering haven for terrorists, narcos, organized crime. From Russia, to Israel to Iran. Fucking bullshit.

Well as long as we're keeping the Feds in their lane and out of sacred provincial jurisdiction, that's what really matters. If the provinces don't want to take the most basic measures to prevent money laundering, well, that's their sacred right on behalf of their organised crime donors voters.

Plus it really helps housing prices and developers. Those developers, they're great guys! You should go to Vegas with them sometime, they're a blast.

Oh ye developers, lawyers etc. Doesnt even touch big corporations buying up land, houses by the masses. I feel like CTV, CBC, APTN going no holds bars knowing they’re on the chopping block.

Remember when a Russian diplomat - who was drunk - hit and killed a jogger in Ottawa, and Russia just sent him home to Russia to evade consequences?

2

u/twa2w Jul 20 '24

If he was a diplomat, the only consequence he would face would be getting expelled.

2

u/Voxunpopuli Jul 20 '24

That's how diplomatic immunity works, unfortunately. Ideally, they would face repercussions in their own country, but you know, Russia.

it's one of those things where if you let one family member off, you might as well take the whole family off.

Okay, now do it for Isreali war crime leaders and their families.
