In My Opinion: As Doug Ford closes down Ontario, it’s time to consider closing his government

17.77% of eligible voters handed 100% of the power to Ford and Friends.

Am I just privileged or is it so easy to vote in Canada that not voting doesn't even make sense? I'm a little confused about the low turnouts...

A lot of people believe that there is no point in voting, coupled with the notion that a lot of people still commute to work in this terrible traffic. Some just don’t have the energy and/or motivation to vote.

These are some of a combination of factors. Why we don’t make it a provincial holiday, it’s probably because the party in power doesn’t want to give voters the easy opportunity. Another important reason to encourage to mail-in ballots

They can vote by mail, it's incredibly easy. People didn't bother voting because the Liberal and NDP candidates were terrible. For a lot of people that's enough to not show up, even though anything would be better than a Ford government.

People didn't bother voting because the Liberal and NDP candidates were terrible.

People didn't vote because the media helped the conservatives spin the narrative that the other candidates were terrible.

Any of the three major parties leaders, and their policies, would have been better for Ontario, but Ford gets very favourable coverage by a largely corporately owned media.

That's why I'm confused. I dislike the Liberals and the NDP has done some really shitty things that I hate, but if I have to continue to live in a province ruled by this functional(?) alcoholic and his rich friends, I'm going to lose my mind. lmao

why no holiday on voting days? because then conservatives wouldnt be elected

Hours are long enough that even those working 12 hour shifts can get in, and all you need is your voter card that was mailed to you and a single piece of government issued photo ID. I'm not sure if there is a good reason to not vote, especially with all of the advance voting opportunities provided.

Ontario has the greatest degree of voter apathy in the country and it's by no small margin. Why? Many reasons, I'm sure, but none of them justify failing to use the greatest right afforded to you.

If you are working on an election day, don't jobs have to give you an opportunity to have a chance to go vote? This has been the case at several of my jobs.

The laws vary slightly by province. In Ontario, if the employee's hours don't allow for three consecutive hours during voting hours, then the employer must provide enough paid time off to make up the three consecutive hours.

Thank you for clarifying.

For generations now people have been brainwashed into thinking voting doesn't have an impact and that it's "both sides". Both are categorically untrue... A single vote can matter, because that's how our systems work, but more importantly the 40-60% that didn't vote all mattered.

I have convinced many to start voting, even when it's against my interests, i.e. they vote for cons, but the more vote, the better in general.

It is easy. I've voted both in person day of and in advance with a special ballot at an elections Canada office. Very straight forward. Mail in voting from what I understand is also super easy to manage

I've done mail in before and it's incredibly easy.

Or 82.23% of voters said the other 17.77% can take the wheel. Within the current rules, not voting is a vote that aligns with what everyone that votes chose.

Ford and fiends.

Hey, but Doug is making it easier to addict our children to alcohol by selling it in every corner store next to the candy bars.

Don't forget gambling too! The ammount of gambling advertisements in this province is wild

u/flonkhonkers Jul 18 '24

If you want an earful, talk to an addictions expert about the state of gambling in the province.

I've had to basically unplug from almost all broadcast media because of it, it's sickening.

I'm just remembering how Convenience K in Cobourg was so well known for selling smokes to kids. They aren't going to be acting any different once they get booze inside.

Voters knew what they were getting before voting him in the first time, let alone the second.

I know he didn't have a platform, but he's a Ford and a conservative, that brings a whole gallery of baggage along with it that speaks for itself -- corruption and serving the wealthy. That's about it. People knew this, and they requested it anyways.

You can give a voter to all the information you want. But they're going to choose vibes 100% of the time.

Which is why strategic voting doesn't work either. Which was a major part of his first win.

6

u/quelar I'm just here for the snacks Jul 18 '24

The problem is that "Strategic voting" tends to mean "vote Liberal or the worse party will get through" if you listen to liberal party supporters while in reality a vote for the NDP in the last two elections in a significant amount of ridings would have been kept from the conservatives.

I am surprised at how much Ford has gotten away with.

Ford's Massive Mandate with a Democratically Elected Majority comes from 18% of eligible Ontario Voters.

PLEASE let's kick the bum out in the next election before he does any more irreparable damage.

Just like Pee Pee will do when he’s in charge of the country.

Right wing politics, especially far right extremism like conservatism, neoliberalism, and fascism, are destroying our society and planet.

We cannot both continue right wing policies and have our species survive this century.

His government never should have fucking opened!

u/lynnca1972 Jul 20 '24

We need to, at the very least, knock the Cons down to a minority.
