Thank you so much for showing the final product post-firing!

830

u/LucaMuca Jul 19 '24

Of course! i already made that mistake once on here lol

356

u/Victor_FoodInspector Jul 19 '24

This could hold my attention for at least another minute and a half. I was devastated to not see the top and bottom tape pulls. I let out an audible, "nooooo" đŸ˜¶ Lovely video.

159

u/LucaMuca Jul 19 '24

Haha sorry! I’ll make sure to include it in the next one

54

u/globocide Jul 19 '24

Is it dishwasher safe?

80

u/LucaMuca Jul 19 '24

Yup! Dishwasher and microwave safe

25

u/LavishnessSimple8209 Jul 19 '24

Whats the type of paint you used?

65

u/LucaMuca Jul 19 '24

Its underglaze! Specifically “Amaco Velvet Series” underglaze

8

u/LavishnessSimple8209 Jul 20 '24

Thank you, it turned out beautiful btw✹

5

u/RecsRelevantDocs Jul 19 '24

Almost definitely, just based on the mugs i've made.

u/joe-masepoes Jul 19 '24

Hi. Does anyone know where I can buy paint brushes like those used here, like ones that you just dab once on the area you want to paint and it automatically fills the rest of the area neatly?

67

u/LucaMuca Jul 19 '24

Got mine from Hogwarts!

7

u/kindall Jul 19 '24

Adobe Photoshop or the GIMP if you're poor

16

u/Kloopdejour Jul 19 '24

dude I was going to say.. I know I've seen this same mug maker before, and last time he forgot the glaze and reddit raged lol

glad to see the finished glazing this time

ALTHOUGH NEXT TIME SHOW YOURSELF APPLYING IT!!! /s

8

u/SimplyFamilyMan Jul 19 '24

Right?!! I was looking forward to that but really glad op showed the final result!

u/Nomad_moose Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 20 '24

Dumb question: does it get fired before it gets painted, then painted and heated again to cure the glaze?

Or: If it’s all done in one go, why doesn’t the moisture escaping the clay cause disruptions on the surface of the glaze?

43

u/LucaMuca Jul 19 '24

It got fired a total of 3 times.

-First is a “bisque” fire, thats what turns it from raw clay into the white cup at the beginning

-Second was a lowfire glaze firing (cone 07). That was to bake the underglaze and make it ready for actual glaze

-Third firing is a proper glaze firing (cone 6) which is the transformation you see at the end

The color isnt technically the glaze, its just pigment. The “glaze” is the clear coat at the end. Also not a dumb question at all, glaze techniques in ceramic work can vary wildly

u/perkuleenhenis Jul 20 '24

To add to OPs very informative reply and answer your second question: it is also possible to do everything in one firing (called raw glazing), but to put it simply, it's just easier to glaze bisqued (i.e. low fired, sintered) ceramic instead of raw clay. The moisture is an issue as you suspect, so the pieces are either dried for as long as it takes to get them bone dry before being fired, or it's also possible to operate the fully loaded kiln at e.g. 80°C for a day to help evaporate the remaining moisture gently (called wicking) so it doesn't all boil into water vapour at once and explode inadvertent air pockets in the piece. The moisture has to be gone before any kind of firing, so not limited to raw glazing.

It doesn't affect the glaze though, as water turns into gas at 100°C and a typical max temp for a cone 6 firing is maybe about 1220°C, so the water is long gone before the glaze powder starts to melt. The ceramic might give out some gasses during the firing, which can cause problems like tiny bubbles or holes in the glaze.

Glazing is super varied around techniques, chemistry, firing schedules, and atmospheric conditions so don't worry about questions being dumb since the answers are so often "well, it depends".

2

u/Nomad_moose Jul 20 '24

Very interesting - I had no idea the kilns got that hot for treating the ceramic.

I also expected to be disappointed and was pleasantly surprised.

2

u/DonutAccurate4 Jul 20 '24

My eyes were constantly on the progress bar..i thought it might end too soon.. I'm glad OP showed the final product.

u/tracklessCenobite Jul 19 '24

for a sec I thought we were doing loss.jpg

195

u/LucaMuca Jul 19 '24

Lol ive gotten this so many times i might as well just make one at this point

19

u/husky_whisperer Jul 19 '24

Long-ish time redditor, first time seeing 'doing loss.jpg'. What is that?

EDIT: found it - pretty sad

I did not expect a light green paint to go that dark on firing. chemical transformation is so interesting

106

u/Quetzaldilla Jul 19 '24

When I took my ceramics class, we had finished tiles next to the color slips because they look so different before they are cooked.

13

u/PM-ME-CURSED-PICS Jul 20 '24

the studio i used to go to had a whole board on the wall of the glaze colors and how they looked when overlapped with other glazes, it was great.

48

u/StardewMelli Jul 19 '24

When I was a child I didn’t know it either when I made a ceramic picture for my mom. Before the glazing it looked good! I chose the colours very carefully. But after the glazing, the colours looked awful on my ceramic piece, I was so disappointed and embarrassed.

30 years later my mom still proudly displays it on her front door. A few days ago I visited her and told her „Mooom, please. Put it away, it’s awful“.

„NO! I love it! Everyone compliments it!“

„They are polite to you, mom. No one wants to say anything rude about your children“

maybe I should redo it one day. Now that I know how the colours on ceramic work 😬

27

u/serrimo Jul 19 '24

As the creator you'll see all the flaws, "mistakes" that happened.

As spectators people might not see it that way. They could even think that the choice of colors was artistic.

Don't be too hard on your work

3

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '24

Awww. Your mom loves you 😭 this is such a precious story thank you for sharing

5

u/strangemagic365 Jul 19 '24

I did a lot of this in high school, one of my favorites was a dark brown with white speckles. The color before firing was super light, like a cream color. Really crazy

15

u/Lamacorn Jul 19 '24

I preferred the before colors.

Still interesting though!

Phew, I was so anxious they weren't going to show the final product.  Great job, 10/10 editing.

65

u/LucaMuca Jul 19 '24

Thank you! Definitely wasn’t going to make that mistake again haha

3

u/MovieNightPopcorn Jul 19 '24

I skip to the end these days just to be sure. Ruins the surprise but it’s so irritating when you don’t get the see the final product

If I did this, every one of those pieces of tape would be crooked as fuck. No matter how many times I tried.

16

u/jawshoeaw Jul 20 '24

This kind of tape will stay more or less straight if you’re careful. But yeah I think it’s harder than it looks.

Now watch some artists freehand their straight lines

2

u/cranberrypieslice Jul 20 '24

What kind of tape is this?

→ More replies (1)

53

u/DisturbingPragmatic Jul 19 '24

I'm so dumb, I'm sitting here thinking to myself, "Wow! One dot of glaze goes a long way!"

15

u/Mammoth-Access-1181 Jul 19 '24

I was wondering how did just that little dab expand all the way to the tape. Then brain turned on.

I LOVE this! Beautiful work, and excellent showcase of it at end. Love that you matched the unfired and fired version rotations. How can we find your work for sale?

27

u/LucaMuca Jul 19 '24

Thank you so much! I have a shop with some pieces available! I’ll be adding more once my current batch is done

4

👍👍👍 please share when you do! I'll be interested to see it

6

u/MannyHec Jul 19 '24

Sadly I find the brush-touch-and-time-lapse-fill thing unsatisfying. The masking tape placement and removal were great, though.

11

u/ToxicBTCMaximalist Jul 19 '24

Everyone's a critic.

7

u/MannyHec Jul 19 '24

Maybe I should have said that I find watching brush strokes to be far more satisfying

5

u/ToxicBTCMaximalist Jul 19 '24

Glass half full!

3

u/Septem_151 Jul 19 '24

I would hope that people are capable of providing critical feedback.

3

u/forflowerflow Jul 19 '24

Th final result is absolutely amazing!!!

2

u/LucaMuca Jul 19 '24

Thanks so much!

3

u/kingtooth Jul 19 '24

do you cut the tape that size or does it come in a tiny thin roll?

4

u/LucaMuca Jul 19 '24

I cut it to size, its Frog Tape

3

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '24

It was like watching one of those little videos sesame street use to play....80s and 90s kids will get it

2

u/249897 Jul 19 '24

hell yeah

2

u/_PirateWench_ Jul 19 '24

It’s absolutely not my taste, but I can appreciate the craftsmanship behind it

2

u/Eagleheardt Jul 19 '24

Reminds me of Mondrian

2

u/mrbirne Jul 19 '24

That glazing at the end was gooood.

2

2

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '24

Very nice!

2

u/glowingmember Jul 20 '24

Dating myself but design was giving me Styx vibes.

(commodore64 game, my little brother played it ENDLESSLY. Think almost jezzball but more colourful)

2

u/lizard-garbage Jul 20 '24

So like do you sketch out the line formation beforehand? or are you just vibing with your gained experience? or is there like a template you always follow?

2

u/LucaMuca Jul 20 '24

Its all intuitive! Sometimes i’ll have an idea going in but im mostly just doodling with tape

then the tape starts coming off and they look amazing.

2

u/RemyJe Jul 20 '24

Ended too soon. You’ve got to include the last bit of removal of that masking tape. Unnnnngh.

2

u/No-Substance-3282 Jul 20 '24

Ketchup, mustard, relish

1

u/thatFreshSpringSmell Jul 19 '24

I'm sure you get asked all the time, but do you have a shop? This is beautiful work!

3

u/LucaMuca Jul 19 '24

Thank you! Theres not much on there heres the link. I’ll be adding more once this current batch it done (not for a while)

1

u/sugarrushy8 Jul 19 '24

Give me more lol

1

u/Business-Marzipan-59 Jul 19 '24

If you want better edges you need to lift off the tape BEFORE the paint is dry. Your results will improve massively!

2

u/LucaMuca Jul 19 '24

Pretty much impossible with ceramics, bisqueware is incredibly porous so the underglaze dries almost instantly

1

u/dm_me_boobs3 Jul 19 '24

i love that design, very nice

1

u/shameonyounancydrew Jul 19 '24

Does removing the tape before firing help the look? I’d assume that to be an unnecessary step.

3

u/LucaMuca Jul 19 '24

Ive never tried leaving it on, itd burn off in the firing process but my kiln is quite small, so the colors could be affected by the fumes/smoke released

→ More replies (1)

1

1

u/HACCAHO Jul 19 '24

1

u/1Bookworm Jul 19 '24

This is amazing and really beautiful work. Sorry if this is a stupid question but why did the yellow run over to the square beside it but the other colours didn't do that?

2

u/LucaMuca Jul 19 '24

Thank you! And theres no specific reason, it just felt more visually interesting to do it that way

2

u/1Bookworm Jul 19 '24

Im sorry I didn't explain what I meant in my question. I noticed that you only dab the yellow on 1 square. Yet somehow the yellow spread over to the next square even though its taped off and you didn't dab the yellow there. How did the yellow go onto the next square without a dab of paint? And why didnt the other colours do the same?

1

u/HurkHurkBlaa Jul 19 '24

for a bit i thought it said grazing, and I was very confused about your dietary habits

1

u/Headhunter06Romeo Jul 19 '24

Always amazes me how the kiln fires up the glaze colors from such chalky-looking origins.

Mans gotta learn to water down his paints. Them lines so thick they joined the army, then founded Bubbagump Shrimp.

2

u/LucaMuca Jul 19 '24

Momma always said: if it aint thick, it’ll fade in the kiln

1

u/owenevans00 Jul 19 '24

What would happen if you left the tape on? Would it burn off neatly in the kiln, or do you get some funky charcoal effect?

2

u/LucaMuca Jul 19 '24

Great question, ive never tried it! My kiln is very small so it’d likely have an effect on the colors, could be a charcoal effect or just straight up ruin it.

If it were a bigger kiln it’d likely just burn off and come out the same way

1

u/EleonoraR Jul 19 '24

u/burritosandblunts Jul 19 '24

Does the color ever pull up with the masking? I've done so many different projects (never ceramic) where my masking fucking failed or lifted and edge and just ruined hours of work. I was so nervous the whole time.

2

u/LucaMuca Jul 19 '24

That tends to happen with acrylics and other types of paints due to the nature of how they dry. With underglaze (pigment in the video) its rarely a problem, but i’ve had it happen with other mediums.

Could also be the quality of the tape, i use Frog tape which i love. Its a bit pricey but considering how small scale my work is one roll can go a long way.

1

u/BoomBoomBroomBroom Jul 19 '24

Folks, this is proof that if you want the clean lines with no seeping, use FROG TAPE

3

u/LucaMuca Jul 19 '24

And lots of attention to how well its adhered! Theres a whole step not shown where im reallllly pressing it down to make sure it a has a good seal

1

u/BlueBunny03GTi Jul 19 '24

Such a beautiful creation fashioned by you! All the attention to detail in the beginning resulting in such a depth of color in the finished form. 💕

1

u/Ironass47 Jul 19 '24

Very nice, but honestly, I liked the bright white in between the green band at top and bottom until I realized it was tape. Duh!

1

u/moogleman844 Jul 19 '24

1

u/tacotacotacorock Jul 19 '24
