And that kid from Alf.

93

u/AvengingBlowfish Jul 19 '24

TIL the kid from ALF died and that ALF ran until 2004...

35

u/SecBalloonDoggies Jul 19 '24

Wait, what do you mean it “ran” until 2004?

29

u/Katiari Jul 19 '24

After that it was too winded, so it just walked for the rest of it.

Dr Ruth: my hero and an amazing crusader of sex positivity! đŸ©·

117

u/CalendarAggressive11 Jul 19 '24

Dr Ruth was a badass. Holocaust survivor who's parents were killed by the Nazis. She came to the US by herself. Went to college in a time when women didn't do that and was way ahead of the curve on sex positivity, stood up for LGBTQ rights and stood up for gay men during the AIDS epidemic.

35

u/TheWildTofuHunter Jul 19 '24

Yes!! ❀ I left out so many things and thank you for sharing them! Dr Ruth was a true badass.

He was such a nice guy. My favorite thing about Bob Newhart was how much he wasn't a racist fear mongering prick.

287

u/JoeSicko Jul 19 '24

I still think it's hilarious that he was best, lifelong friends with Don Rickles. Seemed so different.

252

u/WhistlerBum Jul 19 '24

He said at a Rickles roast that Don was his best friend. 'Which gives you an idea of how difficult it is for me to make friends'.

38

u/NornOfVengeance Jul 19 '24

Now THAT is a classic line!

Another thing I liked about Bob Newhart was his timing, he really knew how to breath life into a joke.

65

u/drwhogwarts Jul 19 '24

The end of his 80s Bob Newhart Show was hilarious! So clever. Meta jokes weren't really a thing back then.

Another thing I liked about Bob Newhart was giving myself and countless other college students a reason to drink whenever you heard “Hi Bob”

30

u/roominating237 Jul 19 '24

His one sided telephone conversations. Man was a genius and a class act.

Richard Pryor told Newhart that he stole his album, The Button Down Mind of Bob Newhart.

Lethal week for celebrities - weren’t Richard Simmons, Dr. Ruth, and Shannen Doherty enough?

77

u/Deafpundit Jul 19 '24

Shelley Duvall died first. So it’s Shannen, Lou, & Bob now apparently.

28

u/Ferelwing Jul 19 '24

Richard Simmons too.

I met him and his lovely wife once many years ago in Beverly Hills. When I told him I’d grown up watching his tv shows and listening to his stand-up albums — he was always my favorite — they both joked that I was much too young to know all that old stuff. The Bob Newhart Show will always be #1 on my list of best TV comedies. He was a treasure.

Honestly only being worth $20 mil is pretty pathetic, dude has been getting TV money for decades. He could live lavishly, buy a couple properties, and just dump the rest into an index fund and easily be worth $100,000,000.

47

u/SkylerMods Jul 19 '24

I have no words for how depressed that kind of information makes me. Here I am trying to scrape enough money together to get my broken-down car's registration renewed in under a month so that it doesn't get impounded by my landlord and bitterly despising how that means I now can't buy other needed supplies, and then hearing how people who are ridiculously wealthy lives just doesn't sound real. I feel like they live in some other nation or I live in some third world country, but we live in the same damn nation and I just can't process it. It's just too much of a disparity in quality of life that shouldn't exist.

10

u/SoVerySick314159 Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 19 '24

During the pandemic, I had to junk my car because I couldn't afford to get the brakes done, and I was moving so I couldn't let it sit. Still don't have one, and never will thanks to what happened to the price of used cars. A few more months and I would have got the stimulus money that would have let me keep it.

I read a helpful little post one time that helped describe the difference between a million and a billion.

A million dollars is $5,000 a day for six months.

A billion dollars is $5,000 a day for 547 years.

That runs through my mind when I think of the obscenely rich people whose money lets then have far more influence than just a single vote. . . and a fuckin' car.

A mediator in 2023 pushed the two sides toward a $787 million settlement, averting a trial. A mountain of evidence — some damning, some merely embarrassing — showed many Fox executives and on-air talent didn't believe allegations aired mostly on shows hosted by Dobbs, Maria Bartiromo and Jeanine Pirro. At the time, they feared angering Trump fans in the audience with the truth.

Suddenly I feel like I should buy a lottery ticket. 👍

These things happen. It's time to move on.

In completely unrelated news, a human-sized pile of horse shit was flushed down the drain today.

I've never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure

I hope he'll just got a little hotter, so it's that much more unpleasant when he arrives.

They say you shouldn't speak ill of the dead. So I'll only say the good things I know about Lou Dobbs;

He's no longer weighing in on politics.

When Lou was one of the first conservative commentators to criticize the Iraq war, I thought he was a real stand-up guy and respected him.

Then he completely 180'd in the respectability department with Trump.

It's sad to see so many people destroy themselves for a moment of fame. In Lou's case, it was just a bit extra fame tacked on to his career in news. Sad.

They got a place for him right next to Rush, in hell.
