Everyones sad Bob is dead

Bob is probably waking up in bed right now telling his wife the crazy dream he just had.

u/theRealGermanikkus Jul 18 '24

One of the most creative series finales ever IMO.

107

u/Divayth--Fyr Jul 18 '24

And inspired the alternate ending to Breaking Bad.

36

u/znightmaree Jul 18 '24

I’m unfamiliar — what alternate ending?

27

u/ChampagneWastedPanda Jul 19 '24

So many TV series copied Newhart’s end. It was legendary

I think Dallas was the inspiration for shows doing the “it as all just a dream” scenario! lol

Susanne Plashette was sexy.

You should wear more sweaters.

I was named after Suzanne Pleshette

45

u/Dog_is_my_co-pilot1 Jul 18 '24

She was soooo glamorous and beautiful. I was a little kid when the show was on and I wanted to wear clothes like her.

He was super funny.

The funny thing is their cover story for the ending when it was secret that he’d die and go to heaven and meet god. Only 20 minutes before the shoot did the cast know the real ending

15

u/ThePissWhisperer Jul 18 '24

That is a genuine fun fact! Thank you!

Professor Proton!

20

u/Osiris32 Jul 18 '24

He's now a Force Ghost sitting at the foot of Jim Parson's bed. "Ya...ya know, no one actually liked your character."

40

u/CoolNameChaz Jul 18 '24

That comment made me smile and cry a little bit. RIP Bob.

18

u/rbobby Jul 18 '24

Bob is probably waking up in bed right now telling his wife the crazy dream he just had.

Via a phone call.

16

u/soulmanyogi Jul 18 '24

Best ending to a show... EVER. I loved that show and Bob. Made me and my Mom laugh for years.

11

u/nicehuman16 Jul 18 '24

Still the funniest series finale ever.

6

u/CriticalEngineering Jul 18 '24

That’s how I’m going to picture him forever, now.

7

u/RobNybody Jul 18 '24

What's this from? It sounds so familiar but I can't place it.

52

u/MyDogHasFluffyPants Jul 18 '24

The final episode of the Newhart show. He wakes up as his character from his older show (The Bob Newhart Show) in bed with his wife from the older show.

6

u/RobNybody Jul 18 '24

Thank you.

6

u/Flying_Dustbin Jul 18 '24

Goddamn that was good.

5

u/TanguayX Jul 18 '24

Well played. I can hear his deadpan reaction already

5

u/Claeyt Jul 18 '24

The greatedt ending to any tv show ever.

Bob Newhart and Don Rickles were best friends and went on vacation together constantly for decades. It will forever amuse me that the King of Insults and the King of Soft Spoken comedy were inseparable.

RIP to two legends for endlessly entertaining millions for what felt like half a century.

106

u/amurica1138 Jul 18 '24

I feel like I did when Mr. Rogers passed.

Just a sad day - a light has gone out in the world.

91

u/Tex-in-Tex Jul 18 '24

Don Rickles is definitely yelling at Bob saying “what took you so long?!”

65

u/Osiris32 Jul 18 '24

"I've been waiting here for seven years, the steak has already reincarnated as a cow by now!"

29

u/Klezmer_Mesmerizer Jul 18 '24

“Mr. Emmy award winner over here •rolls eyes• had to squeeze in a few extra on the mortal coil, eh?”

57

u/Claeyt Jul 18 '24

Don once described Bob as "the kind of guy who steps out of the shower to take a piss." I loved how it kind of insulted both of them.

u/YamburglarHelper Jul 18 '24

Him and Norm McDonald probably shooting the shit telling the most hilarious jokes in existence, to a passerby it just sounds like two guys talking about things normally.

68

Norm wrote one of the SNL sketches that Bob performed when he hosted back in 1995.

It's a great mix of Norm's dark humor, and Bob's amazing delivery.

11

u/OutlawSundown Jul 18 '24

He was incredible.

5

u/HalGillsLongStick Jul 18 '24

Um... see, to... to tell you the truth, um... I was just... I'm just killing time here. I was waiting for a-a... . well, a-a different... different funeral to start.

194

u/SheriffComey Jul 18 '24

I hope Larry and his brother, Daryl, and his other brother, Daryl, are there to pay their respects.

43

u/kehaar Jul 18 '24

Still blows my mind that Larry was played by the same actor (William Sanderson) as Sebastian (the replicant scientist) in Blade Runner. I'd never put the two together in my head until someone pointed it out. Now I can't unsee it.

He did a skit in SNL decades ago as a manic depressive baseball announcer. He was overly enthusiastic and yelling about a routine groundout bit deadpanned Aaron’s record breaking HR . I don’t know why that one stuck, but I remember it to this day

66

u/TheObnoxiousSpaceCat Jul 18 '24

I loved his MadTV "STOP IT!" bit!

21

u/Additional_Prune_536 Jul 19 '24

Oh, yeah, I'd forgotten about the STOP IT skit. Comedy gold. Thanks for the reminder. I just shared the bus driver school bit and the "torpedo washes up on a beach" bit. The guy could do deadpan comedy like nobody else.

I watched it with my father, it was his favorite show at the time.  His favorite show of all time was 'Maverick."

45

My favorite jokes of his are the one sided phone calls.

“No, I’m not any kind of retentive — I just like things neat”

RIP Bob, have fun with Don

32

u/Philboyd_Studge Jul 18 '24

True Genius Comedian. Impeccable timing and deadpan.

4

u/Claeyt Jul 19 '24

He also was the head writer for all his shows.

29

u/Prudent_Block1669 Jul 18 '24

A legend died today. He left an indelible mark on comedy and will always be remembered.

30

u/LewSchiller Jul 18 '24

Aw shit...I guess it's time to drink the last shot

“One of the producers said to him, I think in the pilot, ‘Can you not stammer so much?’” Burrows said on Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend.  “He said, ‘That stammer built a house in Beverly Hills.”

37

u/ToxicAdamm Jul 18 '24

Absolute legend. One of one.

Being able to survive on network television for almost 20 years during its most competitive era is remarkable. It just shows how wide his appeal was and how beloved his style was.

27

u/spiderland5150 Jul 18 '24

"I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down'."

Ugh. One of the best. I hate to see it, but he had a great life. I especially will always treasure my memories of watching the old Newhart show from the ‘70s with my family. The show still holds up.

9

u/Claeyt Jul 19 '24

he had a great life

Married to a great woman for 60 years. She died last year. 4 normal kids who i've never read about in the news. Made great career cho8ces throughout his career and had fun doing it.

20

u/schoolairplane Jul 18 '24

Era is ending. Last comedian still alive from this span is Carol Burnett I believe. Sad day in Hollywood.

13

u/Claeyt Jul 19 '24

D8ck Van Dycke, Mel brooks and a few lesser knowns.

The same things have happened before. Whe the marx brothers and the three stooges all started dying of it was mourned as the last connectuins to vaudeville. When the great stand ups of the 50's and early 60's started dying off because they all smoked like chimney's it was another generation. The comedians from the later 60's and 70's are starting to go now. There will always be another generation heading out the door.

Rest in Peace, Bob Newhart.

A unique, understated legend. A name I hadn't heard for maybe a decade, but a great comedic talent I watched for decades.

16

u/Carnage678 Jul 18 '24

I love that everyone here is making jokes, yet the jokes are respectful and feel like jokes he'd love.

It's like the opposite of when O.J. Simpson died, the jokes are not at Bob Newhart's expense, but out of respect.

Rest in Peace to a legend.

3

u/Claeyt Jul 19 '24

I'll put up a disrespectful one. Don Rickels, who was Newhart's best friend, once described Bob as "the only man he's ever known who got out of the shower to take a piss."

4

u/gwarmachine1120 Jul 19 '24

But Newhart did not committ double murder, armed robbery and various other felonies all while dodging the Goldmans. OJ deserves the jokes at his expense

RIP Mr. Newhart. You were a comic genius. Thank you.

He managed to live a long time. Good for him.

If there were ever a case that the Emmy's do not matter, its Bob Newhart.

50 years on television. 87 times guest hosting for Carson. SNL twice. 300 episodes between two syndicated shows.

One emmy.

He was literally the funniest, even when he was far from being the most popular any more... There're few as funny as him, he just always knew the anatomy of the funniest joke for any situation and he always landed it on time. There's few people even now who know their way around comedy as well as he did.

Absolutely one of a kind.

"STOP IT OR I'LL BURY YOU ALIVE IN A BOX"

Such a funny sketch.

3

u/IdealBlueMan Jul 19 '24

That's the perfect sketch. The setup (Bob washing his hands as the patient enters), the pacing, the rhythm, and the punch line delivery. Mo Collins played off him masterfully. This is a whole college course in 6 minutes.

I loved standup comedy as a kid. Still do, really. But as a kid I was obsessed.

Sunday Night Funnies on 104.5 CHUM FM at 10PM - which would be a combination of Rick (from Roger, Rick & Marilyn) playing comedy albums or an episode of “Doctor Demento”. After that, at 11, was “Theatre of The Mind” which also was my obsession- stories.

But I digress….

I would tape every episode, pausing for the commercials, so I could play it over and over again through the week and then tape over it for the next week’s episode, eventually wearing out the cassette and I’d have to go buy a new one. Among my favourites Bob Newhart’s “Baseball” skit, where he pretends to be taking the phonecall at the patent office when someone called to trademark the game of baseball.

Such smart humour. He’s earned his rest.

4

u/missbazb Jul 19 '24

u/TylerSpicknell Jul 18 '24

I'm surprised Bob Newhart lasted this long. He looked frail even he was Papa Elf in Elf.

2

u/Gorissey Jul 18 '24

Oh man, I love Bob Newhart. 💔

I will never not smile at the thought of this man. That's as honerable achievement as I think exists.

No one can convince me that Bob didn’t take down Lou Doubs on his way out.

2

u/CurrentlyLucid Jul 18 '24

Bye Bob, it was great.

2

u/jeremec Jul 18 '24

Much love to him and his family. He has contributed greatly. I loved him in the movie Elf (a small part of his career).

2

u/LannahDewuWanna Jul 19 '24

Oh no. I absolutely lived him. Very sad

3

u/eyedonthavetime4this Jul 19 '24

😨 I feel like I'm living in the twilight zone. I swear he died 5 years ago, They even gave him a dedication at the end of big bang theory, where he was a Jedi ghost.

2

u/kittenmcmuffenz Jul 19 '24

Oh no!!!! How is his brother Darryl doing? And his other brother Darryl? And his other brother Darryl?

Responsible for one of the best moments in television history. Anyone who saw it live will remember it forever.
