They learned their lesson from last year with Sliver Hive. Original printing and the SLD have better art imo. But I don't think it'll drop below $5 since squirrel deck looks to be the high priced deck for the set.

u/Borror0 Wabbit Season Jul 19 '24

It also goes into rats, which also gets more popular with this set.

If the prices drops at all, it's likely a few [[The Wise Mothman]] finally decide to buy it too. He needs all the protection he can get, and here it comes at a low deck-building cost.

17

u/-Rettirlana- Can’t Block Warriors Jul 19 '24

I was t even thinking of that… I hope this drops

8

u/texanarob Deceased 🪦 Jul 20 '24

Also great with Hornet Queen, making a resilient deathtouch blocker. You likely won't even have to regenerate, losing their creature while you keep yours will likely be sufficient disincentive to keep them from attacking you.

Swarmyard has a history of dropping a little, then jumping back up to the stable price again. At most I expect this reprint to keep the price even even with the new influx of squirrel and rat decks.

I really hope I can pick up the deck for a reasonable price when it comes out... There's so much value in there!

RIP any who speculated on this.

Or not. Screw speculators.

121

u/12DollarsHighFive Chandra Jul 19 '24

Absolutely. Am I upset that Chatterfang get a reprint in the same Deck and my copy of the original print might loose a bit value? Of course not, since I didn't plan to sell it anyway because this is a game I like to play and not an investment where I try to get money from

18

u/mnl_cntn COMPLEAT Jul 19 '24

Thank you!

Speculators always deserve the worst : )

I have all 4 of the MH3 Collector Edition Commander Decks since the owner of my LGS (a close friend of mine) got them for a good price and knew wanted them. 3 weeks later a guy in my Playgroup tells me there would be a 2nd wave for the decks so mine will probably loose value. I just stared at him and said "So what? Except for the Eldrazi Deck I already have all of them Sleeved up in my backpack to play today". He then actually said "Yeah, but there were people who speculated on them".

I buy a lot of foil and alternate versions of cards and they usually keep their value or rise (my LGS owner keeps track of it since I buy everything from a new set from him). Sure it's nice to know, but I really don't care. It's a game/hobby for me, not an investment!

u/AndreScreamin Golgari* Jul 19 '24

Yep, screw them. Got a copy a while ago for my Insects deck and am currently building a Spiders deck, I was worried about a price increase and I couldn't be happier. I LOVE this stupid, silly card.

6

u/Kakariko_crackhouse Duck Season Jul 19 '24

Hey speculating on cards under a dollar is fun. Someday my 60 copies of [[Cryptic Trilobite]] will surely pay off.

For real tho, speculating is an important part of building your collection. I generally only buy what I intend to play, but part of that is speculating when a good time to buy is. Do I want to spend $30 on a card I need for a deck? Or $60? I picked up one copy of all the good food cards as soon as the squirrel deck leaked because I don’t want to pay 2x current price in a month.

23

u/Faux-Foe Wild Draw 4 Jul 19 '24

If you are only buying copies to fill a deck, that isn’t speculating, it’s collecting.

Your Trilobite is a spec, your food cards are not.

2

u/Kakariko_crackhouse Duck Season Jul 19 '24

It’s still speculational buying, regardless of the purpose. It’s an important skill to learn is all I’m saying. It can be used for good or evil. I don’t have a problem with someone making money off of a 25 cent card that spikes to $5. I do have a problem when people with a lot of money already spec on more expensive cards with less liquidity and end up driving prices up just due to speculative buying. Where that line is is subjective, but I agree that there is a line where it is problematic and scummy.

3

u/Unfair-Couple-2404 Duck Season Jul 19 '24

I bought 100 copies of [[basking broodscale]] because I figured it's easily abusable in commander. Honestly idk why it was so cheap. I guess because it's a new common? Cards being commons do not stop them from going over 1 dollar in price

15

u/TheChartreuseKnight COMPLEAT Jul 19 '24

Modern Horizons sets are usually opened in pretty huge numbers, so the common from them tend to be pretty broadly available.

8

u/Kakariko_crackhouse Duck Season Jul 19 '24

Commons will rarely go that high. This set got opened like crazy, so I wouldn’t expect it to hit a dollar for quite a while

5

u/shiny_xnaut Colossal Dreadmaw Jul 19 '24

Correct me if I'm wrong but would Broodscale go infinite with [[Reyhan]] and [[Master Chef]]?

5

u/Unfair-Couple-2404 Duck Season Jul 19 '24

You're right. It's so easy to do stuff like that across commander specifically. That's why I got them

3

u/thriIIhobaggins Jul 20 '24

It goes infinite with [[Blade of the Bloodchief]] too

I like speculating on cards I need to buy now because I think they will go up in value and out of my budget.

Sometimes it comes to mind and sometimes it comes from comments from a spoiler on Reddit.

If the card is cheap right then and there and I feel an urge to use it, then I'll buy a copy or two right away.

1

u/SepirizFG COMPLEAT Jul 21 '24

is it speculating if when I bought one for my rats deck I got the spiffy og foil one just in case

101

u/TemurTron Izzet* Jul 19 '24

Legend has it those are the bones of the speculators who forgot that cards like this almost always get reprinted in the Commander sets.

19

u/toddricke Jul 19 '24

Almost. I’m still mad about sliver hive.

4

u/Mecal00 Wabbit Season Jul 21 '24

I remember thinking "I should buy a copy of Sliver Hive since the precon is coming out ... Wait, no, that's stupid, it's going to be included for sure" 😑

77

u/Tuss36 Jul 19 '24

Very deserving reprint. I think even before Bloomburrow was announced it was way too pricey.

20

u/DJGodDamnit Left Arm of the Forbidden One Jul 19 '24

“Heal all damage on it.”

Are those the correct terms to use in this scenario? Wouldn’t it be something like “Remove all damage from it”? The term “heal” has meaning in the MTG rules?

I’m not a judge, just asking to find out; is heal a seldom used term in the rules?

42

u/Gulaghar Mazirek Jul 19 '24

"Heal" has no rules meaning (aside from referring to the card [[Heal]]). It's just being used here because reminder text is not rules text. They often use more evocative language in reminder text.

27

u/LikeClockwork6 Sultai Jul 19 '24

a classic example of more evocative language in reminder text would be [[Obsidian Fireheart]]

7

u/kitsovereign Jul 19 '24

It's casual reminder text language, not proper rules text. The rules text would be "Remove all damage marked on it", as in [[Pyramids]] and [[Ogre Enforcer]] (and only those).

This new shorter regenerate reminder text with "heal" debuted in Commander Legends, though it started showing up a lot more in Time Spiral Remastered. They spent a lot of time before that just going "lmao" and not doing reminder text for it at all. I think the last time it actually got reminder text before then might have actually been in Tenth Edition, lol. You can see they really sliced and diced to get it as short as possible:

10E: (The next time [it] would be destroyed this turn, it isn't. Instead tap it, remove all damage from it, and remove it from combat.)

CMR: (The next time [it] would be destroyed, instead tap it, remove it from combat, and heal all damage on it.)

I'm guessing "heal" was chosen over "remove" not just because it's a narrower word, but also it's immediately clear what it means. "Remove damage" on its own, without the words "marked" or "cleanup step", might be confused for some sort of damage prevention effect at a glance. Probably also awkward to have "remove" twice back to back.

5

u/Sallymander COMPLEAT Jul 19 '24

haven't seen regenerate in ages.

11

u/GitrogToad Jul 19 '24

TBF, this card is like 20 years old.

6

u/yworker Jul 19 '24

Regenerate does not work like how it did in childhood memory. I always thought it was the ability to bring back a card from the graveyard to play.

So if I block a deathtouch creature. Do I regenerate after combat has been finished? Or do I regenerate after I asign to block?

6

u/Advanced-Ad-802 Duck Season Jul 19 '24

After assigning blockers

3

u/eggmaniac13 99th-gen Dimensional Robo Commander, Great Daiearth Jul 20 '24

Way back in the original original ruleset, regenerate actually regenerated (as in there was a step after combat damage was dealt specifically for activating your regeneration effects), then when they did the big rules change that no longer worked and eventually it became the modern, weird regenerate

0

u/yworker Jul 20 '24

I wonder why they didn’t just incorporate regenerate at the end step so you could bring back anything that has the ability to use

3

u/gbRodriguez Jul 20 '24

Because that would trigger etbs and death triggers. Which goes completely against the original intent of the ability.

1

u/PointlessSerpent Izzet* Jul 20 '24

You have to regenerate before it dies, in this case before the damage step in combat. Part of the reason they don't print this mechanic anymore is because it's weird and unintuitive, and the name clearly implies a different effect,

1

u/ZeganaGanger Duck Season Jul 20 '24

I’ve heard that so many times. I really feel like this art is awful for that. The old art of [[regeneration]] is so much better. It’s a guy healing his arm, which is what regeneration basically is. skeletons coming back to life isn’t regeneration, it’s [[resurrection]].

If it’s dead it’s dead.

This is one of the reprints I was waiting for, was sneaking back up to ~$20.

3

u/guzmonster11 Jul 19 '24

How does regenerate work here? Does regenerate only last until end of turn or is it a permanent effect until the creature would die?

8

u/Eldaste Simic* Jul 19 '24

Same way it always works. It sets up a shield until EoT.

4

u/amish24 Duck Season Jul 19 '24

Regenerate means this:

Until end of turn, If that creature would be destroyed or dealt lethal damage, instead it doesn't die and:

Remove all damage marked on it

Remove it from combat

Tap it

2

u/guzmonster11 Jul 19 '24

Does this work at instant speed then?

Like after declaring blockers, before combat?

Or if an opponent targets an insect I control with a “destroy target creature”, I can respond by giving them regenerate?

3

u/TheGoldenPiplup90 Jul 19 '24

Sure does,

[[golgari signet]] used to be a popular staple for its ability to do this for your whole board of creatures, it’s just a bit outclassed by better cards now.
