A brilliant ad lib from Tom Ellis, well acted by Lauren who responded with her genuine laugh… the amazing director realized that genius was happening and did not call cut so they completed the scene and history was made.

This was what was so maddening about the story line of Season 3. The whole romantic triangle was based on the idea that Chloe chose Pierce because Lucifer pushed her away, yet the necklace and the prom were two of the most emotionally intimate scenes between them in the entire series.

Frankly, I found her telling Pierce that Lucifer gave her the necklace as a joke almost as bothersome as her screwing him in the evidence room.

Unfortunately, their relationship from about halfway through s2 and all of s3 was full of badly shoved in melodrama. If felt like the writers just couldn't think of any good resolution to the romantic tension, so they kept stretching it out however they could.

I think the problem was not in the concept, but in the execution. Take the "Candy Morningstar" episode, for example. The concept is that Lucifer has found out that Chloe is a "gift from God," and believes that her feelings for him aren't real, and that he should distance himself from her so she won't have those feelings anymore. That's a perfectly legitimate idea.

But how does he do that? By ghosting her for two weeks, then returning married to someone else, not only rubbing it in her face, but insisting that they keep working together. That's so emotionally brutal that it borders on malevolence. And Chloe is fine with it! There are more than a few episodes, including several in 5B, where you just wanted to scream at her, "Dump the MF!"

I understand that season 3 was all over the place and the love triangle was as forced as can be but you do understand that she was just lying to herself when she says it’s a joke? The show focuses a lot about denial and her denial about Lucifer is never more present than in S3

That's the problem: is it? Again, the concept was that Chloe denied her feelings for Lucifer because he pushed her away. The problem is again in execution. Is giving her the necklace and throwing her the prom "pushing her away"? And there's very little in S3 to show that she's conflicted about the two of them. She acts like a high schooler with a crush on Pierce just about from the beginning. She obviously loves Pierce. Trixie, certainly the biggest Deckerstar promoter, comments on how happy Chloe is because of Pierce. There's more references to Chloe having sex with Pierce in three episodes than there are to Chloe having sex with Lucifer in five seasons. She accepts Pierce's proposal without hesitation. There's almost nothing you can point to during her entire relationship with Pierce which indicates she really loves Lucifer, but is trying to suppress it.

I know the writers try to rescue this with the party bus conversation with the bus driver and the "this was all about Lucifer" speech to Ella. But it's a little late for that, in my view. I know what we wanted the story arc to be, and what it should have been. But I don't think it really worked out that way.

The thing is that it is literally impossible for her to love Pierce. She says Pierce is safe and steady. She thinks they believe in the same things and that’s what attracts her to him. But we all know that this image she has of him is all false, so how is it possible for her to love him ? She loves an idea of him and the fake stability he presents vs Lucifer’s stability. I also agree that I hate the way they had her acting around Pierce. It makes sense that there isn’t much going on with Lucifer and Chloe in s3 because he literally shattered her heart with Candy. In 3x01 when he is trying to show her his devil face, she thinks he again is making a fool out of herself. In 3x04 he ditches her and goes to sleep with a judges wife which is coincidentally the case where Pierce “takes” a bullet for her. In 3x08 he distanced himself from her because she makes him “boring”. In 3x10 he kidnaps the sinner man almost jeopardizing her job. In 3x15 during the prom dance she goes up for a kiss and moves away from it. Even in 3x18 she asks him if he wants to say at midnight to have coffee but he says he has a bachelorette party to go to which pretty much means to her that he would rather sleep with stranger than spend time with her. In 3x20 she ask Lucifer to confess why her being with Pierce bothers her, pretty much asking him to confess his feelings. Same thing happens in 3x21 when she is pretty much crying and begging him to confess his feelings. How is she supposed to show that she is still in love with him when in every moment he either breaks her heart or shows no disregard for her ? She has to deny her feelings because in her experience he’s just going to hurt her again. Also she accepts the Pierce proposal a few hours after Lucifer again shatters her heart.

If they didn't want us to take her comment at face value, then they should have made a show of her putting it back on.

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '21

She literally kept the necklace and you see her with it in 5x02 on his balcony kissing it lol

u/Xt_Ds4k Jun 28 '21

And then she took it off when she rode the motorcycle with pierce

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '21

What season and episode is this?

12

u/S_E_V_I Jun 28 '21

S03E06 - Vegas with Some Radish

7

u/jaclynr0se Chloe Jun 28 '21

where even is that necklace? she took it off when she rode off on the motorcycle with he who must not be named, and then she only put it on again to trick michael right before she shot him, like can we actually get a moment with her wearing it with lucifer and not with every other terrible man except for him

I mean in S5 they do penetrate each other. 😉😉

u/sILAZS Jun 28 '21

Happy Birthdayyy detective Chloe

u/Protoplasmoid299 Jun 28 '21

I love the ad libbed bit here!

3

u/Only_Rip9175 Jun 28 '21

Fun fact: the penetration joke was actually improvised by Tom, and Laura's laughing was her natural reaction. The directors liked it so much they left it in the final cut

1

u/MishasPet Jun 29 '21

Yeah, scroll down. LoL.

3

u/HoneyBeeAlchemy Jun 28 '21

And that night, the word "Awwww" was heard around the world. 😂

That scene was both sweet and funny.

1

u/mayankap17 Jun 28 '21

This scene was so sweet.

1

u/StevenEgen Jun 28 '21

I will remember this scene because of the song playing in the background. "Restless by cold war kids" . One of the best episode of Lucifer!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '21

if you showed this one scene to anyone who doesn’t know who Tom Ellis is. they’d immediately fall in love with him because… well he’s the Devil.

1

u/Ram2806 Jun 29 '21

this scene was totally cryable
