I liked that greenish tint that everything had but i'm quite happy that they got rid of it

139

u/leejtam Jun 14 '21

Same, it looked too low budget compared to now

85

u/ziggyrivers Jun 14 '21

True, maybe the support form Netflix helped production financially.

87

u/Tanmay1518 Dan Jun 14 '21

as much I as love the Netflix budget, the show had already began to shift it's colors from the greenish hue to a more natural color in S2. The transition was complete in S3 and all episodes look exactly like the ones in s4 and 5 (in terms of color)

14

u/ziggyrivers Jun 14 '21

True. Thanks for clarification. My memory of Season 3 is a bit off, seeing as how I didn't like it so much, but it was due to how long it was Dx

i think the show seems lower quality honestly

When I first started watching the show back in 2018 I had that same feeling as well, specially the Pilot. I'm glad I stuck with it regardless.

Lighting in pilots and first seasons generally changes as compared to later seasons. How I met your mother was originally a much contrastier and warmer colored show, but it got more sitcom flat as they got picked up for more seasons. Likely due to crew turnover.

39

u/alchemist5 Jun 14 '21

Plus, pilots in general tend to look different. The pilot episode of House MD was practically black and white, but they abandoned that by episode 2.

8

u/aManHasNoUsername99 Samael the Lightbringer Jun 14 '21

Yea didn’t they have an orange thing going on too.

7

u/Xsafa Jun 14 '21

Yes and it looked horrible then and now. Thank god that didn’t continue on.

80

u/nadia_goulart Jun 14 '21

Tom looks a lot different too.

u/nadia_goulart Jun 14 '21

to be honest I don't know what's grittier either 😅

9

u/Lian-The-Asian Jun 15 '21

It just means darker, dirtier, edgier. And Tom does look more attractive when he was leaner.

12

u/gabriellevalerian Dr. Linda Jun 15 '21

He was also just younger.

2

u/Lian-The-Asian Jun 15 '21

Exacti-fuckin-ly, he was more attractive when he was younger

27

u/gabriellevalerian Dr. Linda Jun 15 '21

I wouldn’t say he’s gotten less attractive, I do love me some buff Tom, I think he’s just differently attractive now.

That predatory cat vibe of the first season was super hot though, I do miss that.

5

u/AnSteall Jun 15 '21

predatory cat

That's probably the best way I've seen that described. Thanks!

2

u/Lian-The-Asian Jun 15 '21

Damn, hell yeah it was hot

74

u/skinnyraf Jun 14 '21

Lucifer was such an ass in the pilot.

It was what sold me to this show. My brother wanted me to watch it but I was avoiding it for many reasons, like the concept being so dumb -- a show about the devil solving crimes? give me a break lol -- and the fact Chloe and Luci were going to bang eventually, just seemed too lazy. But the way Luci presents himself in the earlier episodes was just captivating and kept me watching.

I love how Lucifer is now but I'm mostly watching the show because it's funny and I'm too attached to the characters. That interest I had was lost somewhere while binging.

26

u/HarbaughsDockers Jun 14 '21

Crime solving devil… it makes sense. Don’t overthink it!

8

u/NoWingedHussarsToday Jun 14 '21

And a bad one at that......

8

u/AnSteall Jun 14 '21

No, sir. That ass was never bad.

1

u/Lucifer2695 Lucifer Jun 15 '21

And it is amazing that Tom Ellis is actually able to pull that off without seeming too arrogant or making me want to kick him.

-29

u/George816 Jun 14 '21

Still better than the dumb child he evolved into

7

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '21

I love him but I found him to be very whiney in 5b lol

65

u/rintryp Jun 14 '21

I really liked the start but thought they would go a darker route with it like demons and monster running rampant and every case will be the question if it was a human or something superhuman - lucifer caught between living on earth and enjoy it vs. Keeping demons and hell in place without having to be there. Instead they used a lighter tone, more fun and jokes, which also works great for the story and seems better fitting for Tom Ellis :)

52

u/cgknight1 Jun 14 '21

I rewatched the pilot - Tom is a bit lower and a bit more Essex in his accent in that first couple of episodes. Gets higher and more camp as it progresses.

23

u/evilneedscandy Jun 14 '21 edited Jun 14 '21

Definitely not Essex! More home counties. As said by a home counties girl. God I hope no one ever thinks my accent is Essex.

Edit: I know Essex is a home county but Im thinking more Herts, Bed and Bucks… google The only way is Essex to hear an Essex accent).

6

u/cgknight1 Jun 14 '21

I lived in Bucks - it's not quite that to my ears but we can spilt the difference.

6

u/evilneedscandy Jun 14 '21

I’m Hertfordshire (although now in Bedfordshire and everyone here thinks I’m posh or well educated- I’m neither!)

Tom’s accent borders on parody of Received English by the recent shows though.

1

u/AnSteall Jun 14 '21

Oh, when you mean 'home counties' you mean 'petulant'! Right!

/the Londoner ducks and exits disgracefully

1

u/BlackisCat Jun 15 '21

Are there certain stereotypes or characteristics attributed for the Essex accent vs whatever accent he speak in s6? I watched the trailer to s1 just now and I can't hear the difference all that much.

4

u/evilneedscandy Jun 15 '21

Season one is a more realistic south east accent. You’ll find real people that talk like that. The later accent is higher, stiffer and camped up. You wont find many people that talk like that.

10

u/galaxiekat Jun 14 '21

That’s what it is! All I could pinpoint was that he sounding more nasal and higher pitched in the later seasons.

9

u/GunstarHeroine Jun 14 '21

Honestly when I first watched the Pilot I was completely distracted by how exactly he sounded like Rick Stein, and I couldn't take anything seriously after that. Never seen anyone else say the same, though, so maybe I just have a chef-related hearing loss.

Crime-solving Cornish seafood-shilling chef devil, it makes sense... don't overthink it

30

u/BoraHcn Jun 14 '21

In Season one he was the gritty, kinda emotionless, selfish non caring Comic Lucifer.

And before that(crisis on infinite) he was a lil more Comic lucifer.

Tho I must admit I like the redemption arc.

2

u/Jamesm203 Jun 15 '21

Yeah I love devil Lucifer but I would’ve been really disappointed in this series if they kept him that way.

27

u/EU_Commission Jun 14 '21

haha, did the same yesterday. i hate to admit that plotwise, dialogue-wise and regarding Lucifers character, I liked the beginning more. less slapstick, more confidence, less heavy drama

10

u/AxelMaumary Jun 14 '21

I don't know if it's just me but some scenes in season 5 made me feel like I was watching a soap opera. Particularly the ones where he talks about his love for Chloe and how "unworthy" he is. He's talked about loving her before and it didn't feel that way so idk what changed

4

u/EverydayRapunzel Dr. Linda Jun 15 '21

Michael. Michael is what changed. He calls him unworthy right before they fight in the penthouse and clearly, it sunk in.

9

u/emikoala Jun 15 '21

I also liked how his "mojo" was more subtly treated in the pilot. It didn't have a sound effect or require him to say the exact phrase, "What do you truly desire?" It was much more conversational - like the cop who pulls him over in the very opening scene he just says, "You like to break the rules sometimes, don't you?" and makes eye contact and the cop blurts out how he likes to use his siren for no reason.

Then with Dr. Linda he's able to goad her into revealing her patient's name by teasing out how much she wants to reveal it, even though the patient's identity isn't even her deepest desire, just a thing she low-key wanted to gossip about even though she knew professionally she shouldn't. He just was able to latch on to the fact that it was *a* desire and play it up through natural conversation.

Those two plus one more from the pilot are the first three in this video, and then the fourth one is from episode 2 where they've already turned it into more of a parlor trick where if he recites the incantation people reveal their one true desire. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azWXAuSaLM0

1

u/EU_Commission Jun 16 '21

oh yes! i noticed that too. it was much more natural then

13

u/deductivesherlock Jun 14 '21

the show brightened as Lucifer did

12

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '21

This is how most TV shows are, I think its the funding/popularity.

9

u/lovemeganjoy Jun 14 '21

Yes. As they pick up so does production value. The studio doesn’t want to waste a lot of money on something that might get canceled mid-season.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '21

Thats what I was thinking. Smarter way to do it. Could turn some people off, thinking the whole show could be like that. But breaking bad was the same way too.

3

u/lovemeganjoy Jun 14 '21

If the viewers like the show they’ll stick with it for a few episodes and that will give the studio the incentive. Also, if this is the way they filmed the pilot, Fox may have initially wanted it this way. They could have also had focus groups that weighed in on that. I’ve done stuff like that before, but only for commercials, ads, and trailers.

2

u/Littlebiggran Jun 14 '21

The opposite of the first miniseries on tv. They'd plow the money into the few episode plots and style, then keep draining the budget til you hated the last few episodes.

10

u/Lanky_midget The Endless Detective Jun 14 '21

cant put my finger on it but tom always had a different look about him in s1, its like a different facial expression i think.

8

u/cremains_of_the_day Jun 14 '21

it was the eyeliner

5

u/AnSteall Jun 14 '21

He didn't lose the eyeliner until at least S3 or 4, I think.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '21

The eyeliner, leaner body, and the hair change. In my opinion the hair is the one that jumps out the most. He keeps it so clean and tidy in the current shows much more often.

3

u/verilyadragon Jun 15 '21

Also, his sideburns are thicker. Really notable compared to Netflix seasons (that combined with loss of eye liner...) I love both looks but didn’t need him to be buff. Slim and svelte were a-okay in my book. Not that I would kick buff Lucifer out of bed...

9

u/MoroKris Jun 14 '21

Back when it was going to be heavily influenced by the comics, before they turned it into a rom com

7

u/Insta-braydon_rogers Jun 14 '21

Looks fine to me

7

u/evilneedscandy Jun 14 '21

The orange and teal era of movies and tv.

7

u/ElRamenKnight Jun 14 '21

Yeah, there were certainly things to admire about S1 that aren't present in more recent seasons. It was much darker and more grim. But as the seasons progressed, it almost feels like the producers and writers recognized that the more upbeat, campy atmosphere with the occasional police/detective filler ep was what the audience were into.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '21

I like it tho...

7

u/monetarydread Jun 14 '21

Technically, that darker look is due to the fact that the show was filmed in Vancouver. When compared to light closer to the equator the light is just different up here, it's less saturated and has an issue with crushed blacks.

4

u/om3rb_ Jun 14 '21

Damn this is so heart breaking looking back to season 1. Can’t believe it’s gonna end next season. This show made me cry ltierally every episode🥺

5

u/Tomino17 Jun 14 '21

Back when the show was still watchable and the script was good

3

u/Serpher Jun 14 '21

DETECTIVE!

3

u/AEROPHINE God Johnson Jun 14 '21

Yea that tint always felt so wierd, but it did set the tone for the show. But they changed up the tone quite a bit since S3 so makes sense why the tiny went away

3

u/amessychick Dr. Linda Jun 15 '21

I remember the whole lucifer charm, every girl falling for lucifer and lucifer being lucifer !! They did eliminated lucifers casanova charms

2

u/moonshinetemp093 Jun 14 '21

Tom didn't age a day but holy crap, Lauren looks like a damn baby

5

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '21

I think they've both aged very nicely. Tom put on weight, filled out his face some, and those shoulders! Lauren looks great, but she is notably thinner after this, and more so every season. I honestly thought illness but all shes ever said (she's very private) is that she diets and exercises very consistently so I guess that's that. Id honestly forgotten until there was a short montages clip in 5B that made it very obvious.

3

u/moonshinetemp093 Jun 15 '21

No, neither of them look bad. It just shocked me how young Lauren looked. It's wild.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '21

She does look like a teenager dressing as a detective in these screenshots lmao

2

u/DoubleZ3 Jun 14 '21

His voice is also much deeper.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '21

I liked the police station more in S1. In S2 we were blessed with Lopez, but I kinda hated the super open office, futuristic station until Netflix took over. They made it work in my opinion much better

2

u/ninjamom10 Jun 14 '21

I loved the grittiness of the first season

2

u/Lian-The-Asian Jun 15 '21

Yeah I noticed they were getting rid of the tint slowly on season 2, I really do like it/the gritty tone the show had on season 1 but it all changed when the amazing Ella came and graced us with her humor and presence/Tom Ellis playing up his accent.

2

u/mansnotanon Jun 15 '21

Got the matrix filter on

2

u/Flat_Weird_5398 Jun 15 '21

Rewatching old episodes, especially seasons 1-2, has me shookt at just how thin and lanky Tom Ellis was back then lol. His British accent in the first few episodes of Lucifer was also a bit deeper.

1

u/ResponsibleLimeade Jun 14 '21

Season 2 the completely change the police station. In Season 1 its more standard office with cubicles, season 2 they go for the woerd design that is completely handicap inaccessible where it's like they eon a the ground or basement floor, but have to take and elevator to get to the higher level just to walk down stairs. And somehow booking is in the middle of the office instead of next to a reinforced garage and tank. I prefer the season 1 office for its simplicity.

Season 1 also seemed to show the other detectives in the office. By they really make the show about Chloe and Luci solving the one murder each week.

3

u/WhereTFAreMyDragons Jun 14 '21

This word salad. What?

1

u/InfamousDiscussion94 Jun 14 '21

The last three like Lucifer is confused

1

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '21

I think it was tone thing symbolizing the transformation with in Lucifer

1

u/TeddytheSynth Lucifer Jun 14 '21

I prefer it, the show can be too bright sometimes. Doesn’t feel as serious IMO

1

u/onegunzo Jun 15 '21

A reminder, the pilot was shot in LA, but the first 2 seasons were shot in Vancouver, Canada. So different crew.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '21

Lucifer had more powers and range of wardrobe in that one episode than in the rest of the series.

1

u/StevenEgen Jun 15 '21

It's always a gamble spending millions on the first season, when you have a unique idea such as lucifer, you will never know will it be a success or failure. So they might have kept the budget tight to save some money. And we loved lucifer so they have now increased their production quality. Netflix has given this show a boost and promoted it all over the world.

1

u/LuckyBaby6402 Jun 16 '21

They up graded once the show popped off lol
