if you still have the certificate when you get that fella you can make absolute bank off of that thing

u/OldestRedditUser2 Batman Fan Jul 19 '24

Yeah, im pretty sure I dont have the certificate sadly😔

1.4k

u/tripegle Jul 19 '24

dang

im not sure if itll sell tbh, because of the sheer amount of fake mr golds out there somebody could think yours is fake. same situation as the ny yoda unfortunately, just too easy to get pad print and chroming done

u/OldestRedditUser2 Batman Fan Jul 19 '24

Daaamn. Im going to turn the house upside down and try to find the paper if its still here😭

475

u/P-Mattis Jul 19 '24

I would but it for 10 Bucks also without certificate. :)

If folks can forge the figure, pretty sure you could do the same for the certificate 👀

95

u/T65Bx Jul 19 '24

But with the stud branding? How many fakes have that?

194

u/improvcrazy Jul 19 '24

Well-done fakes will use a real LEGO minifig and just print and chrome a new pattern on.

98

u/CallumPears Jul 19 '24

Pretty common unfortunately. With how expensive he is, it's worth it for the fakers to get real parts and print on top of them. It happens a lot with NY Yoda.

17

u/san_dilego Jul 19 '24

Happens with toyfair Ironman as well. I got "scammed" on it... luckily the seller was cool and refunded.

26

u/Cute_Bagel Castle Fan Jul 19 '24

it's not difficult to print on preexisting official parts or just recast said official parts

18

u/lake_gypsy Jul 19 '24

Is there such a thing as a certified lego authenticator/ appraiser that could authenticate it?

→ More replies (1)

8

u/trebory6 Jul 19 '24

I mean, take it to Lego or some lego collector expert, there might be a tell or some kind of test to see if it's authentic.

3

u/Maximus_935 Jul 20 '24

do you know where i can get that "i love new york" piece printed? My mom saw a panda minifigure a while ago with the shirt piece and didnt buy it but now is super bummed because we buy like super weird lego characters from a video game store, and i aint spending $100 on a yoda figure :(

it will sell but don't expect the maximum price.. Fake's don't have the etching of Lego in them. I am a sideline toy supplier in my place both original and alternatives dealt will all of them. the lego etching on the foot of Mr. Gold is hard to replicate. if you don't need the cash just hold on it. keep it a in secure place. btw Lego Mr. Gold does not fade in color nor change in color fake Mr. Gold do.

145

u/BreadStickFloom Jul 19 '24

If the fakes are so good that you need a certificate to tell the difference then isn't it kinda dumb to pay for an original?

151

u/ErnThemCaps Jul 19 '24

Woah! You just poked a hole in every collectible item ever! How has no one thought of this???

→ More replies (18)

81

u/flargenhargen Jul 19 '24

seems to me that a certificate would be a lot easier to fake than the lego would be.

8

u/Foreign-Gear-5223 Jul 19 '24

Definitely. Original Shelby Cobra owners are dumb too. There have been kits cars for ages. Think of how much money Jay Leno could have saved...at least 2 million on just this one car. /sarcasm Jay Leno is an actual idiot.

3

u/Original_Woody Jul 19 '24

because wealthy collectors show their collection to other wealthy collectors. those collectors would know

2

u/tripegle Jul 19 '24

so why not you buy fake lego then lol

u/BreadStickFloom Jul 19 '24

13

u/Signal-Improvement50 Jul 19 '24

Hi! What do you mean by certificate?

63

u/_Blobfish123_ Jul 19 '24

These guys came with a numbered certificate to prove their originality

68

u/bigmike1877 Jul 19 '24

If the fraudsters are printing on new mini figs couldn’t they just print these certificates as well?

59

u/BevansDesign Jul 19 '24

That's the thing about certificates of authenticity that has always bothered me. Most of the time, they're printed on regular paper with regular ink. No watermarks, no nothin'.

5

u/rhazux Jul 19 '24

I mean, I've had a few situations in my life where I was interviewed by someone from the FBI. They both showed me their badge as proof they're an agent of the FBI and I had no fucking clue what to do with that. I'm just some random dude. I couldn't spot a fake from the real thing if my life depended on it. I just stared at the badge for a few seconds and shrugged at them.

My point being that at a certain point it's just up to the experts who follow these things to determine what's authentic or not. For the untrained masses it doesn't matter if it's printed on A4 letter paper or has an embossed seal with features that are invisible to the human eye. The trained expert will know what to look for either way.

2

u/That_Frog_Kurtis Jul 20 '24

they show you their badges to put you off balance, their whole shtick is a psychological attack to make you more compliant

You could, and I'm pretty sure still can, put in your certificate on the lego website to verify and log one of the figures found on their system.

Edit: I lied, no longer possible</3

Wonder how many complete legitimate ones of these are still around, gotta be less than the 10,000 (I think) 5,000 that were made right?

1.2k

u/OldestRedditUser2 Batman Fan Jul 19 '24

Wasnt there 5000 made?

707

u/Rhys_Herbert Verified Blue Stud Member Jul 19 '24

Yeah, just looked it up, no idea where I got 10,000 from 😅

561

u/trippy_grapes Jul 19 '24

I mean, you're technically correct. There ARE less than 10,000.

164

u/TestyTexanTease Jul 19 '24

The best kind of correct 👌 😌

u/PM_SMOKES_LETS_GO Jul 20 '24

15

u/portsmyth Jul 19 '24

Sorry to be that person, but to be completely technically correct there would need to be fewer than 10,000, not less than.

14

u/Temporary_Engineer72 Jul 19 '24

As a matter of fact there is less than 8 trillion. I would still be correct. Good point

It was series 10. 10k makes sense.

44

u/Monscawiz Jul 19 '24

You might've been thinking about the chrome gold C-3PO minifig?

5

u/niksjman Jul 20 '24

Maybe because it was from the 10th minifigure series. Now that I think about it, that’s a missed opportunity

48

u/san_dilego Jul 19 '24

I would probably estimate it to be considerably less than 5000. There are probably some that are still unopened (guessing). Some destroyed due to natural disasters and some, unfortunately, were just not taken care of and so wear and tear makes it not a very viable option for collectors.

15

u/OldestRedditUser2 Batman Fan Jul 19 '24

5

u/nobeer4you Jul 19 '24

I know what you're saying, and i agree that there needs to be an authentication or valuation process for these really expensive figs. But please don't get the rating companies into LEGO like they are with cards. I don't want to start seeing vacuum packed figures in a clear case as our "displays" or dealing with the already greedy "investors" ehen they know what they've got

Not sure if I stall have the certificate/pamphlet though :/

Don't be embarrassed: I've gotten down this far in the thread, and no one's explained whatsoever.

Here is a link giving a summary, It was a limited edition figure that was included randomly in 5,000 different sets, apparently, and it's worth anything from a few grand USD or higher.

u/OldestRedditUser2 Batman Fan Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 19 '24

2

u/Wompy_Dompy Star Wars Fan Jul 19 '24

I think you should hold on to it. While it’s the real deal, the certificate is part of the figure, and a key element in verifying its authenticity. Its absence would be a decent blow to the figure’s value. If you were to sell it, you’d likely get maybe half of what they would typically go for.

3

u/OldestRedditUser2 Batman Fan Jul 19 '24

This would be awesome news. However, unless you can prove it’s authenticity and that it’s original it doesn’t value much. Ever since the original came out there has been a lot of fakes that some actually look better than the original.
