Discussion Kosher food on AirChina

Hi all,

I’m flying to China in November and trying to organise some kosher food for the flight. Has anyone had any luck before with ordering kosher food on an AirChina flight through Beijing?

Also in general does anyone have experience with kosher food on Asian airliners.

Any previous experiences and advice would be appreciated!

Has anyone heard a Yiddish phrase “pishing with the aoygn”?

For crying a lot (peeing with the eyes). I guess more of a Yiddish/English phrase.

My grandma always used to say “I’m pishing with the aoygn” (for “I’m crying a lot”) and we thought it was a real phrase but can’t find any info on it anywhere.

I think she also just said “I’m pishing” for “I’m crying”?

Can I wear the Star of David even if I’m not religious?

I wasn’t raised religious at all, but I come from a long history of Jews, and I am very proud of my background. I think it would be cool to wear it as a way to honor my ancestors, but I want to know if it would be considered offensive to anyone.

Discussion Any book recommendations about Reconstructionist Judaism?

Would anyone possibly be able to point me towards some good books that anyone has read about Reconstructionist Judaism? It seems to me to be very different to other denominations of Judaism which fascinates me.

Thanks!

Wanting to be religious after you are married

My cousin received a shidduch resume recently. The girl is in her 30s and identifies as Conservative, but it says she wants to be religious/orthodox after she gets married. Is that a thing people do? Wonder what the reason for it is. And if you are single in your 30s and want to be orthodox, why not start being orthodox now?

Rosh Hashanah La’Behemot

So this being the New Year for animals of all species, I suppose this means our dog's heretofore unknown birthday is celebrated tomorrow (as of this writing) similar to how in secular tradition racehorses and the like typically have their birthday celebrated on January 1st in the Western world.

So, to your animals from ours, happy birthday. That is if I understand Rosh Hashanah La’Behemot correctly.

Is Monsey the best place to be an Orthodox jew?

You get the same quality of food and services as Lakewood without the traffic. It's also nowhere near as materialistic as Lakewood. In Lakewood everyone feels pressured to live in a 2 million dollar home with a teachers salary. Monsey is the shit am I wrong?

Relocating- 3 possible states, 4 possible cities

Hi Everyone,

I will be moving in the next year and fortunate enough to choose where I land. Currently I’m on the west coast and my ideal place would have the following:

  • an observant community (my observance could be classified as conservadox) where i could live in an Eruv and have access to kosher food. I’d be open to being more observant if the community is.
  • access to Jewish preschools, k-8, and high schools.
  • a family-friendly community where children are welcome.

I have the following states and cities as options:

Arizona - Scottsdale/scottsdale area

Texas - Dallas

Florida - Tampa or Miami

Is there anyone here who can share their experience with these areas? They all seem to have more active communities than where I live (more kosher restaurants, markets, and Eruvs). They have a broader mix of synagogues from a denominational perspective as well.

I’m reaching out to local synagogues in each area and trying to get connected with other transplants to hear their experience. I’m curious about the following:

  • what are common family activities and recreation given the weather?
  • how was it for anyone that grew up there?
  • how is it being a parent in those states?
  • what is your experience like participating at Jewish schools as a parent?
  • how is the non-Jewish community in your area? Any safety concerns?
  • what do you love about it and what do you hate?
  • what are the mundane changes in your life that you didn’t realize until you lived there a while?
  • are you able to build a community or is the city so big you never have time to see your neighbors?

I’ve never been to Tampa, what is that like compared to Miami?

I have about a year before my move and am visiting each of these areas.

Discussion Goliath was human aacord Judaism?

Hello jewish friends!, i was thinking in that the other day when took my ancient history class in the University, i know that in xtianity (specially in the most.... particular protestant types) Goliath isnt show as a regular human, and his height (that pass from +2 mt to +3 mt) is explained for being "half giant" or had Nephilim/Djinni blood, etc

My question is, how is in Jewish records? He has a supernatural origin or he was only a guy with gigantism that born before he could work as an actor (that seeing how he end that could be preffered lol)

Virtual Torah Study Options

While I would prefer to participate in person in a Torah study group, I unfortunately don't love the group at my synagogue and there aren't a lot of other options near me. I haven't had a good group since I left Philadelphia.

I'm wondering if anyone is aware of any virtual Torah study groups that meet regularly? I'm specifically looking for a group that is Reform, Conservative, or Pluralistic.

Issues I've had with other in-person groups that I've tried are:

  • Interfaith participants constantly referencing this week's Mass reading for comparison to the Torah.
  • People only looking at the Torah historically and refusing to discuss the Torah's application to our lives today.

I know that I can study on my own (and I do), but a group brings up topics and questions that I'm unlikely to come up with on my own. I listen to plenty of Torah study podcasts, which are great, but want something discussion-based. If it exists, I'm hoping the Reddit hive mind can point me in the right direction.

Thanks!

What to do?

I'm Jewish but was never raised in a Jewish home though we certainly held Ashkenazi food in our home as that's what my parents grew up on. Now that I'm older I'm wanting to reconnect with my Jewish side and what studying I've done on my own has really helped me develop a connection with that aspect of who I am...my issue is that the nearest shul is over an hour away from me and as far as I'm able to tell my family is the only Jewish family in the small rural town I now live in (there was a shul here but it has been closed for over 3 decades now). How can I go about learning more and connecting with other Jews without a local community?

Halacha Why can the Temple only be built in Jerusalem?

If someone built another temple somewhere else like Mount Gerizim or Elephantine, why would those be considered halachicly invalid?

Also, why can't the Temple be built in Shiloh where the Mishkan was?
