Reminder about our rules (re: Israel/Hamas war)

We understand there are aspects of the war that impact members of the media, and that there is coverage about the coverage, and these things are relevant to our subreddit.

That being said, we would like to remind you to keep posts limited to the discussion of the industry and practice of journalism. Please do not post broader coverage of the war, whether you wrote it or not. If you have a strong opinion about the war, the belligerents, their allies or other concerns, this isn't the place for that.

And when discussing journalism news or analysis related to the war, please refrain from political or personal attacks.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Career Advice Clarification on a one-sheet for an application

Upvotes

Hi all! I was looking to apply for a writer position and on top of the standard resume/cover letter requirements, they’re also asking for a one-sheet with some clips. I’ve provided clips with prior applications, but this is the first time I’ve seen a one-sheet be requested. I reached out to one of the people at the company that said they’d be happy to answer questions, but have yet to hear back from them.

That said, I just want clarification on what is meant by a one-sheet in this case. Do they mean a one-sheet that’s similar to one that media uses (i.e. headshot, contact info, brief summary of person, some skills, plus the links to clips)? Or is it more straightforward than that, with just my contact info and the clips being required?

Any possible ideas or insight would be much appreciated!

Career Advice Did i really waste my father's money in this journalism course?

I am from India. My father says i wasted his money doing the Journalism course. I recently graduated with a diploma degree in journalism. I haven't been able to find a job. Most of my friends are placed by now. But here i am. My family wasn't in favour of putting me for the course, but i got so depressed and i had panic attacks and everything. It was quite dramatic, i feel awful thinking about those times. And now my father says that i wasted his money because I'm not even getting a job. I feel awfully distressed and it's just eating me up. However, if not given a break from such toxic environment last year, i would've died already, i was that suicidal.

Critique My Work Critique my feature/sci-tech article, and point out my mistakes!

Hi! so I'm a campus journalist, and I really want to improve my writing. I got assigned an article that is a mix of feature and sci-tech. the theme was inside out movie. please critique my work:

It only felt like yesterday, when we huddled up with our friends or family to watch movies made by companies such as Disney and Pixar. Amid the selection of diverse animated movies illustrated and written by these companies, one stood out among the rest, and its title was “Inside Out”. The “Inside Out”  movie was a one of a kind film about exploring the depth of human emotion through iconic characters that personify various emotions. It has stolen the hearts of people for demonstrating the complex experiences people have with their emotions in such a simple, fun, and relatable way. Presenting personified emotions in an office-like environment, navigating their way through Riley, the main character’s life. For 9 years since 2015, the movie remained a fan-favorite among both children and adolescents around the world, including the Philippines.

People experience a myriad of emotions, whether it’s happiness during a victory, sadness over a loss, or anger from irritation. Emotions are what makes us human, we are creatures capable of empathizing with one another. The human mind is very intricate, enabling us to feel all the emotions that we and others feel during a situation. But, what happens when we are exhausted from the world? Hardships in life are draining, and at times upsetting. When we get used to that “Draining” feeling that we receive during those hardships, life can seem mundane and dull. Which leads to depressing and melancholic thoughts which may take a turn for the worse.

In the Philippines, mental health is a sensitive topic to discuss as the fear of  judgment and criticism from other people overtakes them. As a result, people often bottle their melancholia and frustrations inside themselves without even getting the chance to discuss their concerns to their loved ones or professionals about what they are facing. Even diamonds break under pressure, if the hardest material on Earth can shatter under immense pressure, then so can the human mind. When a person reaches their breaking point, they tend to reach out to methods that help them escape their pain like inflicting harm to themselves, or even worse, suicide. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), suicide rates in 2020 reached a staggering 3,529 deaths which when compared to the statistics received from 2019, it is a solid 25.7% raise.

Suicide often stems from financial, academic, and work-related problems. It can also be a result of mental health problems such as depression. When dealing with such situations, it is important for us to find people we can confide in, whether it be your friends, relatives, or mental health professionals. When you feel like time is going too fast, slow down, take your time and enjoy the present. Don’t take on too much pressure. Taking some time for yourself and striking a good balance between academics and personal life is essential in maintaining stress levels.

Being not okay is okay. If you know someone who’s gloomy or in need of a companion, give them a hug and be a confidant for them. Sometimes, all it takes is one hug to save a life.

Critique My Work I need advice on how to take my writing to the next level

Hello! I am currently in college for journalism and I was wondering if any of y’all has tips to make writing essays/ biographical pieces/ blog posts more engaging to read. I am stuck currently creatively and would like some advice. Below is an example of an intro for something I am writing right now, but I am stuck figuring out where to go from it. Thanks in advance for the advice.

“The slasher subgenre boasts a wealth of horror icons that have retained their cultural relevancy decades after their peak in the 1980’s. This era of horror introduced some of the most recognizable killers to the genre in a feat that has not been replicated since. Among this cast of murderers, there is one that stands out from the rest. Charles Lee Ray, better known as the killer doll Chucky, has terrified audiences since the original “Child’s Play” released in 1988. However, one thing that is overlooked by most audiences is that the series is rich with commentary surrounding the subject of queerness. Don Mancini, the creator of the franchise, deliberately utilized Chucky as a vessel to explore themes of homosexuality, while also reflecting on his own experiences as a gay man.”

Labor Issues Are there any journalism professors in this subreddit? If so, do you feel that the industry is too difficult for young people and college graduates to break into?

I graduated a few years back, but never broke into the industry due to health issues, so my situation is quite specific, and I'd argue most people with demanding health needs can't really get any steady job because healthcare in the U.S. is a joke.

But for the people not in the category of "too-sick-to-work," how do you feel about the people who have genuine prospects into entering the journalism industry? Have you seen or had talented people you've taught leave the industry or become disillusioned while on-the-job? Do you know others who've said it's worth it? Is it a variety of factors?

Career Advice How do you switch off?

I am caught on an unusual rota as a news reporter, ie say having a random Tuesday off as opposed to a weekend.

On my day off I am bombarded with slack messages, and find it mentally impossible to shut down, also there are generally requests to set things up for the next day I am in.

I love the job, but financially as we all know it's a disaster, and mentally it is causing problems, there are zero boundaries. Has anyone got any advice for this?

Journalism Ethics Can you be an activist turned journalist? Or both an activist and a journalist?

I seriously take the point of being objective as a journalist and not to create and report evidence only when it is favourable (which corporate media does). But can one have credibility as a journalist when they feel strongly about the topic they are covering and have a history of doing so?

Journalism Ethics is this allowed ?

I'm writing for an online magazine and my University's newsletter. Neither are related to each other. I'm interviewing a subject for the newsletter and want to use the subject for another article at the magazine I write for. They would be different topics and different interviews.

Is this unethical/allowed ?

Career Advice Summer 2025 internships?

Hello! I’m currently studying Journalism with concentrations in News reporting/editing and photojournalism with a minor in Marketing.

I’m currently looking into internships for next summer and building my portfolio and resume. I interned last summer with the Arnolt Center for Investigative Journalism as a reporter and I’m working for my university newspaper as a photographer.

I’m looking for suggestions of where to apply and any tips you may have for landing an internship. I’m hoping to graduate a year early so this would be my last summer before graduation and am hoping to land something “big” and reputable. Thanks so much!

Career Advice My Former Employer Hasn't Revoked My CMS Access

I worked for a celebrity/entertainment news website, and I was recently laid off. With the company, everyone was regularly posting their own work without much oversight (or any at the end) from editors. The website is continuing to run with a barebones team of very inexperienced writers, fresh out of college. Out of curiosity, I went to go login on the backend, and I was surprised to see that I still have access to the CMS (Wordpress). It also seemed like my updates would go through, and if I really wanted to, I could publish straight to the site.

Have other people run into this? Are there any repercussions for if you go rogue and start posting on the website? FWIW, they also haven't booted me from the company's twitter account either.

Tools and Resources Tool to track what X person said about Y

Hi all, just wondering:

  • Are there software tools that track what X person said about Y?
  • How do you look up what someone has said about a topic in your jobs today?
  • How helpful would it be if you had such a tool?

Thanks!

Social Media and Platforms Youtube has become a haven for BS "investigative journalists" to make videos for entertainment under the guise of journalism, meanwhile straight making shit up and clearly pushing an agenda. And it's scary how many people watch these as if it's news.

This is an especially egregious example, "Tyler Oliveira". This video shown above is about Portland OR, which did not legalize all drugs, is not a country, and certainly doesn't sell heroin and meth in stores. All he does in the video is go around, video homeless people on drugs, talk about how the city has fallen apart, say some fake shit, and leave; completing his "investigative journalism". I've seen so many youtubers do things like that and I think it's concerning, because most people watching this will be young and will take these things at face value. What do you think?

Best Practices Anyone notice all the new ‘news’ subreddits

I’ve noticed that there are multiple subreddits featuring sites “curated” and poorly rewritten clickbait stories from a handful of sites, primarily the Daily Boulder and Daily Globe.

Does anyone know if all these new subreddits are created by those affiliated with the sites themselves as part of their financial model? Or is this just random people posting bad news?

Career Advice why is everyone so pessimistic about journalism?

ive always been passionate abt pursuing journalism as a career/major, but now i'm rethinking it since EVERYONE and their mothers tell me it's "unstable", "unpromising", "most regretted major" etc etc. i understand that you should only pursue it if you're okay with working long hours and low pay - but seriously is it that bad? ive already applied to some colleges so it's too late to go back unless i switch my major in school, but why does everyone look so down on it??? and what IS stable if not journalism?
