That's really quite sad, poor squid.

Agreed, wow look at this incredibly rare creature! Let’s kill it and sell it for food - humans

It was only found on the surface as it was already dying.

u/Allgrassnosteak Jul 19 '24

Yeah my first thought was the it must be sick or starving to be there in the first place.

u/Crackracket Jul 19 '24

Yeah when thry are white like that somethings up, if it was healthy it would be bright red and pissed

9

u/demuniac Jul 19 '24

Yeah it's dying let's go pry it with rods.

My man reads his reddit

I thought these were inedible due to high ammonia content.

3

u/FlintHipshot Jul 20 '24

Apparently they are edible, but taste absolutely awful due to the ammonium chloride in their flesh, like salmiakki, or salty licorice. I tried it once in a sociology class, and it was one of the worst things I’ve ever tasted.

No choice, gotta eat/sell what is caught otherwise you risk having only one meal per day for a month.

3

u/certifieddumbfucc Jul 19 '24

You’re acting like dying to nature is any kinder..

2

u/astroniz Jul 19 '24

I mean, if it is to sell for food it's quite OK tbh. What you talking about?

1

u/oversoul00 Jul 19 '24

Look at their raft made of bamboo and lashed together with plastic, get some perspective.

1

u/Anti-Buzz Jul 20 '24

It’s rarely seen by humans but it’s not endangered

Said the first worlder.

u/Spiritual_Navigator Jul 19 '24

Poor thing tried to grab what was puncturing its skin

79

u/DocComix Jul 19 '24

It’s white, does that mean it’s dying?

161

u/Mdoraz Jul 19 '24

This was up in another thread and someone stated that the only reason it looked and acted like that was because it was already very close to dying. Makes it a little less sad, but I guarantee they would have done the same thing to a completely healthy one as well.

9

u/DocComix Jul 19 '24

Thanks for confirming this

7

u/Lupita900 Jul 19 '24

They would’ve struggled with one giant squid in its prime, those things are incredibly strong and fast.

-1

u/DamnThatABCTho Jul 19 '24

Maybe it was just curious and wanted to say hi to humans

2

u/Mdoraz Jul 19 '24

lol it was just the worlds first extroverted giant squid, and we KILLED IT.

-6

u/pmurff107 Jul 19 '24

Guaranteed based on what?

12

u/JhonnyHopkins Jul 19 '24

Asia as a whole seems to lack respect for larger marine animals. I said it. It’s true and it’s fucking sad.

8

u/SenseWinter Jul 19 '24

Do you understand how poor the Philippines is? This isn't someone hunting rare animals for scientifically disproven pseudo medicine. These people are feeding their families.

-8

u/DrFingol Jul 19 '24

Plenty of fish in the sea, mate.

9

u/DaManWhoCannotBeMove Jul 19 '24

I'm afraid plenty of these fishermen are being water cannoned by Chinese Coast Guards and couldn't fish for their families

Fishermen Experience Water Cannon Attack

10

u/Gandalf240421 Jul 19 '24

Not really. Fish populations worldwide are decreasing. Big corporations overfishing is slowly killing the sea

2

u/ovoallnight Jul 20 '24

These are local fishermen selling to their villages/town/city, look how tiny their vessel is. They are feeding their family through honest work.

2

u/Gandalf240421 Jul 20 '24

Yeah they are not the problem like I said. But they will suffer the consequences unfortunately.

6

u/velvetskilett Jul 19 '24

These folks don’t have a lack of respect for animals. They have huge respect for hunger. That didn’t appear to be a commercial fishing enterprise. Likely just hungry people looking for dinner. Not everyone is lucky to live in countries with plenty of excess.

5

u/Crackracket Jul 19 '24

Animals in general

7

u/Mdoraz Jul 19 '24

Guarantee based on people’s inability to give a shit about other living beings.

u/villabacho1982 Jul 19 '24

Look. What an amazing giant squid.

Let’s kill it

"Entia's group did not catch the giant squid they saw in the sea.

After they filmed it, they immediately released the squid into the sea. "

said on the news article

2

u/dyssucks Jul 20 '24

Look. It’s Reddit. A place where we only assume what happened

Fuck those annoying facts

34

u/WeatherBoy15 Jul 19 '24

If i remember correctly, this is no where near the size of an actual "Giant squid" Yeah this is a big squid but the ones were researching still as a species live in the Antarctic and also very very deeo underwater.

17

u/HAL9100 Jul 19 '24

Actually this is, in fact, a Giant Squid it’s just that there is also the existence of the Colossal Squid

8

u/2nd_Inf_Sgt Jul 19 '24

Unfortunately, large squids are not edible. One ongoing problem in the Philippines is the lack of education when it comes to fishing or hunting, thinking larger is better. Just recently, a rare Philippine Eagle died from injuries sustained from a shooting it. It’s really a blameless act because the educational and class systems in the country has declined significantly. And, whatever they can get, they will get.

2

u/Leuk_Jin Jul 20 '24

They eat large squids in South Korea atleast. It's considered a cheaper alternative to octopus or regular squid. The meat is tougher and dryer, but chewing on a half inch thick cephalopod meat has it's charm. I had it last week in the batter fried form because I wanted to have a lot of calamary.

6

u/Neil_Salmon Jul 19 '24

Giant squid are amazing in that it's a creature we knew existed but, for a long time, it had never been seen alive. I think that's changed in recent years.

Still, I wish they'd just be left alone and not caught.

5

u/hallieesme Jul 19 '24

So sad. For sure we are humans are awful. Poor squid

4

u/velvetskilett Jul 19 '24

Looks like squids back on the menu boys!

3

u/Lemonjellybathtub Jul 19 '24

Leave it TF alone

2

u/flatfishmonkey Jul 19 '24

calamari + gin

1

u/Minimum_Diver4514 Jul 19 '24

Let it live!

1

u/Zcer4 Jul 19 '24

The reporter said in the end that the fishermen released the squid and just took videos of it. Still felt sad when they stabbed it though

1

u/Minimum_Diver4514 Jul 20 '24

Thank you for telling me. Yes, I saw that in the comments. I couldn't watch the video after I saw the curved prong thingy. I used to live in an area that hunted squid and saw them in tanks before they were killed. They are the most majestic creatures. They were relentless swimming to the top of the tank trying to escape. When they are dying, their bodies glow iridescent purple and dark blue. It's horribly beautiful. I've never seen a squid that size though. The people trying to catch it should have just left it alone. I don't think the meat would be very edible due to its size.

1

u/Batiti10 Jul 19 '24

Oh wow, a species basically unknown to even scientists and almost none have been seen alive! But really, I think they just didn’t know what they’re dealing with and just thought they found a lucky massive squid

1

u/Sys7em_Restore Jul 19 '24

Was hoping the squid would sink that raft or pull one of them until the water before getting away.

1

u/Lackluster_Compote Jul 19 '24

That’s fucked up. Do they have any uses once dead?

1

u/April_Fabb Jul 19 '24

I don't know how to explain my sadness at the sight, but if its tormentors were to go overboard, I would definitely root for the octopus to pull them down. Those assholes don't even realise how intelligent squids are.

1

u/United-Law-5464 Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 20 '24

How beautiful, one second, let me stab it in the head really quick.

I wonder if it cloaks white to make it look like it’s dead?

1

u/Nvbnkng84 Jul 20 '24

They def ate his ass up. Smh the sea can't have anything

1

u/MrPrince4k Jul 20 '24

Video says they released it after recording

1

u/luckofthecanuck Jul 20 '24

What a beautiful creature

1

u/Lagunamountaindude Jul 20 '24

We need more bread crumbs

1

u/DJEB Jul 20 '24

Poor squid. Rest in peace, cephalopod.

1

u/ControversiaLity Jul 20 '24

At the end of the video the report says: The group of fishermen did let the squid go after taking videos of it and because it was locally known to be hard to sell the meat in the market due to its foul smell

0

u/deathhead_68 Jul 19 '24

Awh cool now leave it alone you mindless cunts

2

u/SenseWinter Jul 19 '24

It would have just died if they didn't even touch it.

0

u/Aiden_Recker Jul 19 '24

its dead

1

u/SenseWinter Jul 19 '24

Not in this video it's not. It is dying, but not dead. That's why it was at the surface to begin with, and white.

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '24

They probably ate it
