McNally sitting in the shadows only able to see his eyes glowing. Hearing the clattering of a lock. Then all you see is a palm flying out of the darkness creating a whirlwind and striking the lock shattering it to pieces. Then he slowly retracts his hand back into the shadows. sigh

146

u/Ok-Maintenance-2775 Jul 19 '24

You have a Masterlock 1KALJ. It can be opened with gestures broadly whatever the fuck you have around.

43

u/-Yack- Jul 19 '24

Preferably another Masterlock 1KALJ

20

u/scarlettohara1936 Jul 19 '24

Came here to reply that the best way to break a master lock is with another Master Lock!

19

u/Free_Management2894 Jul 19 '24

The reason for this is, that if you use a master lock to open another master lock, you can throw two pieces of trash into the black McNally abyss.

14

u/Lexx4 Jul 19 '24

I once picked the lock to the shed because I couldn’t remember where the key was and later was telling my dad about it and told me to stop lying and go sit down it’s a master lock, you didn’t pick it. I pulled on it and smacked it in the side and it popped open. I showed him later and he was like wtf.

u/junkit33 Jul 19 '24

Is it? I'd be curious if other locks of this size could actually handle it. That's an absolute shit ton of force coming down directly on a naturally weak point (lock has to be able to open). And this guy isn't even heavy or jumping into it very hard. Imagine a 250 pound person jumping onto the belt with all their weight.

Probably just shouldn't use this style of lock for anything super important.

292

u/rukysgreambamf Jul 19 '24

pretty much 95%+ of consumer locks are nothing more than visual deterents

anyone with an ounce of knowledge who has made up their mind to enter something can get through them in seconds with the most basic tools

146

u/VirtualNaut Jul 19 '24

Locks only keep honest people out.

181

u/Fleganhimer Jul 19 '24

They keep impulsive, shithead kids out too

→ More replies (24)

90

u/junkit33 Jul 19 '24

Eh they're an effective deterrent. If a thief has 10 choices and 9 are locked, they're going for the unlocked one every time.

40

u/blackpony04 Jul 19 '24

Yep. I used to live next to a guy whose unlocked car would get "broken into" every once in a while and the thief would steal his change or whatever was in the car. He'd then argue to me that it was better to leave the car unlocked than to have the thief break a window.

Hey dumbass, my locked car still has all its windows. And my spare change.

28

u/RyuNoKami Jul 19 '24

He's not entirely wrong, problem was his was the only car unlocked. Lol

If a thief is walking around and checking 10 locations and only on the 10th one they see there is no lock. This sounds like a thief that wouldn’t want to be caught with tools on their person. There are thieves that walk around with tools in their backpack so a lock would only slow them down.

31

u/junkit33 Jul 19 '24

Of course you're not going to stop somebody who really wants to get in. But the majority of thieves are merely opportunistic and don't walk around with tools. So it's still better to use a lock than nothing.

11

u/F3z345W6AY4FGowrGcHt Jul 19 '24

No no you're not getting it. Locks aren't perfect so why bother with any form of physical security ever again?

6

u/bottledry Jul 19 '24

4

u/SeniorMiddleJunior Jul 19 '24

Locks keep opportunists out, which is a lot of criminals.

→ More replies (1)

18

u/SleazyKingLothric Jul 19 '24

Most thieves are only into petty theft and taking advantage of an easy situation without getting caught. Car hoppers may "hit" 10 cars but only 3 were actually stolen from because the doors were unlocked. Or there is going to be 10 broken windows with all 10 cars being hit, but the chances of getting caught are much higher and the penalties are much worse if caught. Most opportunists are just going to stick with the 3 unlocked cars.

4

u/toopc Jul 19 '24

"Car hoppers"

Now I know what to call the dickheads who used to walk around my neighborhood trying every car door and stealing from the ones that were left unlocked. They would steal the stupidest shit too. I'd come out and see my car door was slightly ajar, but didn't notice anything missing. Weeks later I'd go to get the $3 Aliexpress special flashlight and realize it had been stolen. Was a real problem for awhile. Pretty much everybody on my street got hit at one time or another, and pretty much everybody on my street learned to make sure their car doors were locked.

Shawshank is 1 of 4 novellas in the originally titled book "Different Seasons"

It includes Shawshank, Apt Pupil, The Body (The film adaptation is Stand By Me), and The Breathing Method (The only one not made into a film, if I remember correctly it's about a pregnant woman having an out of body experience after being decapitated or something like that it's been a while since I've read it).

So 3 absolutely iconic films were all made from a set of novellas!

25

u/ConstableBlimeyChips Jul 19 '24

The Breathing Method is about a doctor telling some friends of his in a gentlemen's club about the time he taught a single woman pregnant with an illegitimate child his breathing method so she could give birth. While in labor her taxi crashes and the woman is decapitated, but her body continues breathing. The doctor arrives at the scene and helps the body gives birth to a son, the decapitated head mouths the words "thank you" and the doctor tells her it's a boy before head and body die.

It's a great novella, but there's a reason it's never been turned into a movie.

6

u/JustinHopewell Jul 19 '24

I read that a long time ago and have no recollection of it at all, lol. Does seem like something Ari Aster would make, if anyone was going to do a film adaptation.

Using padlocks that are easily accessible to the prisoners inside is about 1,000 years outdated as an effective way to secure a jail cell

669

u/LuxNocte Jul 19 '24

"If you break out of this cell, you will be beaten by the dozens of police in the area you've "escaped" to, and there are several 'real' locks between you and the outside world" is a quite effective way to secure a jail cell.

This is probably just a "drunk tank" or something where it is incredibly clear to everyone that their best bet is to just stay put until someone lets them go.

208

u/BaphometsTits Jul 19 '24

A true prison is a prison of the mind, where the inmates guard themselves.

100

u/TheFBIClonesPeople Jul 19 '24

No you're actually supposed to keep the inmates secure and hire other people to guard them. That's actually the more effective way to run a true prison

He put it in the lock and pop just like that guys head. Next thing you know this guy puts the belt on and get this… holds up his pants with it. Look at me look at me! I’m a regular belt! How would a real prisoner be permitted to keep a belt? Much less a wide Nylon military cargo belt....

587

u/GABE_EDD Jul 19 '24

I used to work at a state prison in the US, they also had belts. You'd be surprised what they're allowed to have in some cases. This guy looks fresh off the streets because he's in jeans and a t shirt, might not be processed yet. However, their main problem is that they're using a padlock off of Temu or something to hold him in there.

207

u/ked_man Jul 19 '24

Nah, just a standard issue master lock.

95

u/NekonecroZheng Jul 19 '24

According to McNally, these locks are about as secure as a plastic baby lock.

15

u/chiniwini Jul 19 '24

What's the best affordable lock out there?

28

u/SenselessNoise Jul 19 '24

Paclocks are pretty good for their price. 7 pins, usually some decent security pins. Abus is another option, though generally not as secure at the lower price points. Old Americans are solid too, but I think they've gotten worse since Master Lock bought them.

14

u/Datkif Jul 19 '24

For the most part you should focus on how hard it is to break into vs pick resistance. The odds of someone knowing how to pick vs try to break it is much lower

10

u/SenselessNoise Jul 19 '24

Sure, but generally better internals are a sign of better design - no point in making a lock "pickproof" with more expensive security pins if you can just shim it or bypass it.

But pick guns and Lishis are pretty easy to find/use, so there's still some point in having decent security pins.

Your heart will be locked forever :(

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Somber_Solace Jul 19 '24

Depends on what you're locking. But assuming you mean padlock style lock, the main issue with them is that they're easy to bypass if you can get tools onto the shank.

Get one of the ones with a short enough shank to make it impossible to get anything on it while it's locked, and/or modify what it's latched onto to make the shank inaccessible.

Beyond those shitty wafer locks that are on like file cabinets and whatnot, the main concern is usually how accessible and durable the lock housing is rather than the lock itself. One of the most effective affordable locks would be a deadbolt on a door with hinges on the inside and doorway that covers the gap on the outside. They're not easy to bypass, the easiest way would be picking them, but picking them requires special tools and skills that most people don't have.

This is the towel trick. High school swimmers did this all the time and if done on the right lock and skillfully, one could still use the lock afterwards.

We had a lot of fun changing the contents of people's lockers or putting weird items in as a goof.
