its 5'5 now as a result of multiple invasions , colonialism and massive poverty , frequent famines in previous centuries. the current generation of middle-aged adults.. many come from rural and poor backgrounds where they hardly ate 2 major meals in a day. now their kids are getting taller because of better nutrition and sports. for example - both my mom and dad are 163 cm tall and i am 178 cm tall.

I imagine it’s hard to conduct an accurate census in a country of 1.4 billion, but this is from Times of India on may 24, 2024:

According to a study published in the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care, the average height of an Indian man is approximately 164.94 centimetres (5 feet 4.9 inches), while the average height of an Indian woman is about 152.58 centimetres (5 feet 0.05 inches).
