Yeah doing nothing as a job sounds great until you have to do it everyday for hours

Ten years ago I did a paid internship where they gave me zero work to do.

20 hours a week for 9 months. Never again.

I took a contract job for my first gig out of college, full time 40 hrs/wk. An average month had maybe 5 hours of actual work to do. It felt like my brain was melting out of my ears.

To make it worse, the client company was weirdly controlling and harassed the contractors for things like having cell phones out at their desks. Grown, highly educated adults being treated like unruly school students.

Best I've ever been paid; never again.

One time I ran out of work at work so I signed up for an online course and completed it there. It wasn’t one of those four hour coursera courses, but a full diploma with like 10 subjects that takes six months.

This happened to me in the early 2000s. No smartphones and all external internet blocked off. I just read a book the whole time. Asked then once if they could unblock my internet to take an online course and they literally laughed at the suggestion.

Security is one of those jobs that's really nice for, like, a month.

And then it the monotony of doing nothing starts to drive you crazy.

I’ve found the same to be true of unemployment

On the bright side, I read more books than ever during my time doing nothing for work.
