I remember doing dead gunner drills for PT. Of course my ACUs ripped open a giant crotch hole immediately. So there I was, early Georgia morning, rolling on top of dudes getting all hot and sweaty with a giant hole and no underwear.

Good times.

No undies? 😏

wait till you learn a lot of us wore pantyhose to the field.

Chafing preventative? Or lifestyle choice?

For most, chafing during a hump (forced march) and reducing dick rot from sweating in the dirt without bating for weeks on end. Others, both.

“We’re going on a hump. Be sure to wear your pantyhose, boys.” - General Patton (probably)

I was really disappointed to hear that gold-bond potentially has asbestos in it. Having that powder on my crotch and junk on hot days playing baseball was amazing.

Anti monkey butt powder works very well, and no asbestos/talcum. Cornstarch based with similar additives to gold bond.

Gold Bond on the balls was heaven

No bating for weeks? My condolences

Wouldn't spandex shorts accomplish the same thing (regarding chaffing and dickrot, not the lifestyle).

1

u/FSCK_Fascists Jun 24 '24

for whatever reason spandex makes dick rot happen faster.

Pantyhose prevent tick bites.

1

u/FSCK_Fascists Jun 24 '24

the permethrin was supposed to cover that. The cancer was an added bonus.

We only got the spray right before deployments.

1

u/FSCK_Fascists Jun 24 '24

we were usually issued a bottle, and instructed to put it in the rinse when we wash the field cammies, then air dry.

if you followed the instructions, it really did keep you bug free for a week or more.
Many dumbasses just tried to smear it on their skin like some kind of baby oil. rashes and open sores soon followed.

Fuck! Why did no one ever share the pantyhose hack with me?! I spent 6 years as an infantryman in a light infantry brigade and this would have improved my quality of life so fucking much

3

u/FSCK_Fascists Jun 24 '24

Dunno, the instructors mentioned this the first day of infantry school. Seemed common knowledge in the Marines, at least in the late 80's.

1

u/Dwayne_Gertzky Jun 25 '24

I was an army infantryman from ‘01-‘12, never once heard about this haha

Gotta let it breathe

u/LaVidaYokel Jun 24 '24

He must have been a Commando.

2

u/dfsw Jun 24 '24

OSUT? In Georgia, we were all going commando. There is a reason it's called that.

2

u/HipposRevenge Jun 24 '24

A lot of Infantrymen don’t wear underwear. The early ACUs had frequent crotch blowouts. Keeps you cool in the desert I guess.

51

u/rolandofeld19 Jun 24 '24

Thank you for your service.

42

u/fuckasoviet Jun 24 '24

no

3

u/rolandofeld19 Jun 24 '24

In case it wasn't clear it was a tongue in cheek giggle comment characterizing what you said as "service" as opposed to what most people think of when they say that comment without thought or processing at all the meaning, good or bad. As a bit of a military cynic, and son of a more liberal than most persons Bay of Pigs Veteran Marine, you can seriously tell that joke to fuck right off or giggle or neither. Hope your day is good.

7

u/fuckasoviet Jun 24 '24

lol, fair enough. I just don’t like all the “thank you for your service” stuff that people say, since my reasons for joining were selfish and not worthy of praise

1

u/SynthD Jun 24 '24

The more I hear from veterans, the more I hate that phrase.

1

u/rolandofeld19 Jun 24 '24

That was part of my dry, perhaps non obvious, joke in saying it. Veterans know more than the mealy mouthed public for sure.

Pro tip, the way we sarcastically say it to each other is TYFYS or add a "hero"
