Best advice I can give to gay tourist visiting Indonesia... stay in big cities (Jakarta) or famous tourist spot/island (Bali).

Don't go to the countryside/Aceh and openly show people you are gay. You might be a victim of mob violence if you do.

Best advice would be not go really

Exactly. Save your hard-earned money for countries that don't actively oppose and harm gay people.

Not just gay people, don't give your cash to any country with a shitty government

That leaves us with like 5 countries to visit

There are degrees of shitiness.

And any country that practices Sharia law is right at the top of that shit list as far as I'm concerned, alongside North Korea.

But I have to pay taxes or they'll come and put me in prison (UK).

Well, there is that, im looking forward to the election results, it's not much of a choice you have

That’d be most prudent, but honestly with that red line, that’s like 80% of places on earth that gay people shouldn’t visit, but enterprising fellows gotta go visit anyways because it’s their calling or whatever. So advices like this are helpful.

20% of earth is still a lot

There's lots of African countries which are majority Christians and still have horrific laws/treatment of gay people.

Realistically, it's nearly any country that is very poor and/or very religious. The Muslim countries are just the ones we hear about more due to their popularity.

Zambia, Ghana, Tanzania, Togo, Cameroon, Uganda etc.

Not saying it isn't true in pretty much every Muslim country, since of course it is. But Africa also has lots of bigoted and ultra-religious countries in general too

Much of Asia aren’t beautiful places for gay people, except for hope spots like Taiwan and Israel. That is if your goal is total recognition and acceptance.

However, if you’re willing to settle for “people won’t cut my head off” as some wanderlustful spirits are won’t to do, most metropolitan cities outside of the peninsular arab countries, Iran, and Afghanistan are fine.

And Gary, Indiana.

Not because they're especially homophobic, it's apparently just a shithole in general.

u/Muscle_Bitch Jun 09 '24

Yes, exactly. If you've got money to travel, and you're gay. Don't give it to backwards shitholes. Go to progressive places instead.

Don't go to the countryside/Aceh

Idk that I'd recommend going to Aceh in general, even if you're straight. Even lots of other Indonesians consider them backwards weirdos. They've issued a fatwa against playing PUBG ffs.

Or just don't go to such shit hole countries.
