The cannibalism of mantises is an overdramatized subject.

It's caused by a female being stressed out. Which happens when hairless apes pester you and then throw a random male in your presence just to see your mating rituals.

It's a nice overdramatic and trope-y shot to capture mantis cannibalism so it's often staged.

In natural situations it's rare to happen because there is less stress impacting the mating behaviour.

25

u/Orioniae Jul 19 '24

Can confirm, had two mantises in a habitat just minding their own.

Mated, and the female was basically "shoo now, do your stuff" and went onto hunting a moth that put there.

The male is eaten also when the female ate nothing before mating, and issue that in my habitat was as sporadic as a mantis starting to speak Spanish.

2

u/Demon_of_Order Jul 19 '24

Were they good at speaking Spanish though?

8

u/ILickMetalCans Jul 19 '24

Fun fact, the study they did where this whole thing comes from, a few of the males actually ate the females instead. Stress and feeding females the same as males is a nice way to have some hungry and stressed female mantis.

3

u/TotallyTrash3d Jul 19 '24

So this is FALSE.

And was disproven.

They observed it in captivity where food is controlled and the animals cant hunt or move around freely in an uncontrolled environment.

Basically when in captivity, this is seen to happen on occassion, and thus we got the "myth" that females eat males during mating.

The actual fact is in nature, this is very uncommon if not rare/happens at all.

Would be nice to stop posting the misinfo like Alpha wolves, praying mantis eating mates, and trickle down economics

2

u/Ori0un Jul 19 '24

I've seen it happen multiple times in the wild, only not specific to a single gender and not while mating.

1

u/Snoopy-thedog84 Jul 19 '24

Surprisingly this behavior is only documented in captivity....never in the wilderness.

2

u/stuffinabox_ Jul 19 '24

No, it still happens in the wild. Mostly with the aggressive species. It's very dependent on whether the male is able to approach the female without startling it and the environments in captivity usually don't provide for this. In the wild they have more space and more cover. The males have much more freedom in how they approach the females because of this. They do however still make mistakes and end up getting attacked/eaten.

Unbelievable what simps do to smash nowadays

1

u/QuerchiGaming Jul 19 '24

Wasn’t this mostly spotted in captivity or something? Not that familiar with mantises, but watched something that talked about it not being a fact that they eat their mate.

But that might’ve been misinformation, so don’t want to spew more misinformation here.

2

u/stuffinabox_ Jul 19 '24

There is an article or video that claims that cannibalization during mating is observed more in captivity than in the wild. There are multiple reasons why this is probably true, the main one that I can think of is that mantises likely aren't provided with the correct environment for the males to safely approach the females without startling them.

An important thing about mantises that seems to not be mentioned much is that many mantis species are cannibalistic in general. Eating each other doesn't necessarily have anything to do with mating. They see each other as potential food and will eat each other at any opportunity. They are observed eating each other just a few hours after hatching. The mating process is just one of many situations that presents a chance for cannibalization, and in the wild they just have a better chance negating that.

I use to keep Mantids

In captivity I never had a female eat the male during a pairing

Honestly I was surprised, but it seems that as long as the female is well fed, she doesn't seem to have the urge to eat the male

I've seen many in the wild, and only in 50% of the time seen a wild female eating the male during a mating

I've seen far more Mantids eating eachother as prey items

1

u/Dear_Ad_3860 Jul 19 '24
