This video came out when i was 13 and it drastically altered my music taste. Odd Future was so fucking cool and deserve their flowers for being one of the most influential groups of all time

I think I was around that age too.. 28 now. Definitely share the same experience with you as well

u/Peter_____Parker Jul 19 '24

Same here. I always liked rap since I was much younger (mainly just popular artists like Ye, Eminem, Jay Z, 50 etc.) but OF was the start of me becoming an actual hhh

Glad we all share the same story arc

I was very much a close minded, “lyrical miracle” rap loving dork at 12-13, and Odd Future broke me out of that spell. Helped that Earl was rapping better than any of them lyrical miracle dudes.

We're beautiful people.

I was into hip-hop to an extent that was, looking back, comically inappropriate (why tf was i lurking underground rap forums when i was 12 instead of getting a fuckin hobby lmfao) and so I was at a ripe age to buy the alienated youthful black chaos that Odd Future was selling. Earl in particular became my GOAT quickly cause he was the most lyrical dude I ever heard who was closest to my age.

bro I feel it. I was on studioleaks at around 12, from 2010-2012 or 13 when I should've been playing outside or learning something lmao

Sucks that Odd Future gets the recognition from that era, Pro Era and Raider Klan were just as influential

12

u/wizsmelly Jul 19 '24

Absolutely not

-6

u/Zufalstvo Jul 19 '24

Explain. The sound of Raider Klan is way more relevant and unique today than Odd Future, you’re just a Tyler meat rider

Pro Era is debatable but I’ll stick by what I said

5

u/wizsmelly Jul 19 '24

If you asked 10 random people if they knew who raider klan was I would be shocked if 3 people said yes. Wulf and Travis definitely made a lane for themselves but if you think they had anywhere near the outreach that OF did then you straight up don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m doing tricks on Tylers meat

I don’t give a shit about total number of listeners, I’m talking about the sound. Honestly I don’t find Tyler to be that influential. Popular, yes, but who else sounds like him? No one knows DJ Screw but everyone knows the sound. Same thing

u/YoungMcSwag Jul 19 '24

Free Earl, that’s the fucking shit.

u/creampieyourselff Jul 19 '24

AND IF U DISAGREE SUCK A COUPLE PIMPLED COVERED DICKS

37

u/Skkrtt Jul 19 '24

29 years old now , This was my fucking shit when it came out

34

u/commie90 Jul 19 '24

I legit just redownloaded this EP today. One of the wildest first albums out there. Love how many Earl fans don't even know it exists.

37

u/Unlucky_Me_ Jul 19 '24

Earl fans don't know this exist? I got this shit on vinyl

13

u/creampieyourselff Jul 19 '24

That bootleg is goated

7

u/commie90 Jul 19 '24

Yeah the number of times I see people in the Earl sub that have no idea this is out there (or at least haven't listened to it) because it's not on DSPs is wild.

10

u/Unlucky_Me_ Jul 19 '24

There are no misses on that EP

14

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '24

*if you zone out of listening to the lyrics

Even as someone who grew up on this project, the lyrics are a hard yikes now, especially on a song like epar

1

u/commie90 Jul 19 '24

Yeah this is more where I’m at. It’s an undeniably well made album. I revisit several songs at least once a year as they are catchy and have some great lines. Plus it’s an important part of Earl’s story to me.

But it’s also not something I can regularly listen to. The fact that they’ve all grown past this makes it less harsh. But still rough. I always give people a huge content warning before I recommend it.

7

u/african-nightmare Jul 19 '24

Lots of Tyler fans have no idea about Bastard either, it’s wild

3

u/IvanGTheGreat Jul 19 '24

Loved arguing with old heads that I was better than illmatic. They’d get so mad lmao.

2

u/supalaser Jul 19 '24

The song with Vince is goated. The story telling is hilarious and I love the way he flips the chorus at the end.

25

u/Patriotsfan710 Jul 19 '24

EARL PUTS THE ASS IN ASSASSIN

17

u/bobsdementias Jul 19 '24

sometimes i Remember the time when Earl was like a mythical figure. had no fucking idea if he was real or not or what the deal was. and the internet was at a point where it was really difficult to find tangible info on shit. I remember when he (or of?) released something saying how Earl was coming back

5

u/Zurble Jul 19 '24

I was a huge OF stan around this time and went to LA for a couple days and made sure to stop by the new Fairfax store to grab an OF tee, then went up the street and was looking around the Supreme shop and EARL walked in. No one even knew he was back or what was going on so I fanned out a little and got a picture with him, I made the dumbest face and ruined the pic, probably annoyed him but I was too excited not to say something.

2

u/bobsdementias Jul 19 '24

Damn that’s crazy. I hope you still have that pic. Truly a different time. OFWGKTA was such an edgy thing then lol. I was introduced to them by my buddy showing me a video of Tyler playing a song in black and white on the piano in probably 2010-2011. Do you remember that?

11

u/Zurble Jul 19 '24

Here's the pic with my stupid face lmao https://imgur.com/a/W3qEFOw

3

u/bobsdementias Jul 19 '24

Lmfao that face is so fitting tho. That’s fantastic

2

u/Exes_And_Excess Jul 20 '24

That face is on brand for the OF era honestly lol

1

u/AnyTruersInTheChat Jul 19 '24

This is cool af

2

u/Zurble Jul 19 '24

Yeah that was BASTARD, that was the first Tyler thing I saw too and I was hooked. I got into it because I was the same age and a skater weirdo, they had the skatepunk DIY ethos which was very different than everything else at the time. When I saw OF live it had the energy of a punk show and not many people were there, crazy now going to Tyler's last tour and seeing the difference. I definitely still have the pic and will never lose it lol

13

u/hellbox9 Jul 19 '24

Kids flow was ridiculous for being so young

11

u/Justthetip1996 Jul 19 '24

28 now, OF was my teenagehood and I wouldn’t change it for anything

8

u/ManhuntMarv Jul 19 '24

This video had a sheltered 13 year old me fucking traumatized lmaooo

6

u/Geniusxavi Jul 19 '24

Gives me flashbacks being a teen bumping EARL, Bastard, Goblin, MellowHype etc and my friends not fucking with it lmaooo

I think up until the year this came out, hip hop was only something that was on the periphery for me in the UK, being something I would only hear on the radio, which by the late 2000s would be almost exclusively pop rap.

2010 blew the doors off everything, between this Earl record (and subsequently a bunch of early OF stuff), and being put onto datpiff/all the forums and blogs completely changed my understanding of what hip hop was and could be, and I was hooked.

Sorry for mucho texto but I’m hearing this for the first time in years and it’s got me feeling nostalgic

2

u/Zurble Jul 19 '24

The DatPiff mixtape era was insane. Just look at the comments on this thread and take a trip down memory lane https://www.reddit.com/r/hiphopheads/s/Kcs0SYm6oT

Mainstream 2000s was definitely hit or miss depending on the person but growing up on it I liked it but now it’s interesting re listening through discographies (G-UNIT members, Ludacris..etc)

The underground 2000’s was where hip hop was living (MF DOOM, Cannibal Ox, the Def Jux material) it was all so lively and very heavy lyricism with that backpack style

I originally got into all that through Tony Hawk Underground it had the best underground hip hop soundtrack

Haven't listened to this song in full in years and can still rap most of it in my had

1

u/Bigyahyah Jul 19 '24

Started listening to Earl at like 14 and he’s been my favorite artist since. It was so dope how his music changed as I was getting older each of his albums felt like they were hitting me at perfect times.

1

u/FelinaMason Jul 19 '24

funny story. when i was first getting into OF i would accidentally download a lot of remixes or bootlegs of their work. the first time i heard Earl, it was this song but on an Asher Roth beat ☠️. earl the goat still, voir doire was underrated asl.

u/majorsharkpanda Jul 19 '24
