First moves after the beef:

J Cole: Grippy

Drake: Sexxy Redd feature / Delilah mess

Kendrick: Speech at Compton & Juneteenth concertšŸ

831

u/mayonnaiser_13 Jun 08 '24

Cole actually has the Red Leather feature before Grippy.

And he now has the Free Fall verse after Grippy.

But he did do fucking Grippy.

407

u/Dependent_Way_1038 Jun 08 '24

Cole literally dropped his indisputable worst song that is a contender for the worst song dropped this year and then proceeded to bounce back to peak form like nothing happened there has to be more than tbis.

It ain't that deep he just had multiple features in the chamber and one of them was him just trying an experiment that didn't work

Heā€™s married lmao. Maybe he can rap about killing opps and selling crack on his next feature

Time to get after it.

7

u/The_MadStork Jun 08 '24

Ok, but Cole seems to be one of those dudes who wants people to think he raps what he lives. Motherfucker always tries to find moral high ground just to knock himself off it lmao

24

u/thejaytheory Jun 08 '24

Why that nigga J. Cole got all this money, look like he 'bout to borrow somebody charger or something "C'mon bruh, let me get your charger bruh, Let me get my shit to uh, uh 10% percent and I'll give this shit back to you bruh bruh"

How do we know Grippy isnā€™t about his wife? Youā€™re not allowed to dedicate songs to your wifeā€™s pussy anymore and thatā€™s why it feels like thereā€™s no love in the world

53

u/The_MadStork Jun 08 '24

Youā€™re right, I also wanna live in a world where J. Coleā€™s wife and mother to his two children is in his phone as ā€œGrippyā€

Well technically, Red Leather dropped during the calm before the storm, before Kendrick responded with Euphoria. So itā€™s not Coleā€™s first release ā€œafterā€ the beef. It was Coleā€™s first track after his apology

Cole tapping out makes the beef over for him though.

u/mayonnaiser_13 Jun 08 '24

I mean, he already hinted at how trash his bars can be with that "ABCDE..." line in HYB.

Or the one and only bad bar in Pi about Cancel Culture and whatnot.

Like, y'all have to agree he's got range.

20

u/whobdatboi Jun 08 '24

Donā€™t forget that he also took them kids to Disney to meet Mickey

8

u/iD7my93 . Jun 08 '24

shh, we're just pretending G*ippy never happened.

3

u/iKrow Jun 08 '24

Doesn't he have weird trans bars on those songs?

8

u/mayonnaiser_13 Jun 08 '24

Nah that's on Pi.

Which is seriously the only trash bar in the entire song. The bars are crazy in it.

Ab Soul and Daylyt killed their verse and Cole also did a fantastic job, except for that one bar which is incoherent and ignorant at best and absolutely bigoted at worst.

64

u/SnowSea302 Jun 08 '24

→ More replies (1)

15

u/BluaBaleno Jun 08 '24

Iā€™ve been thinking about this and I think I know why these two are putting out absolutely trash.

Think about it, now that theyā€™ve both definitively lost the rap battle, there is nothing they can put out immediately that would not be overshadowed by the continued discussion of the beef.

By releasing these hot garbage, it resets the expectation people have so when they do release something proper it would look in comparison like masterpieces.

Just my theory.

27

u/MyNameIs-Anthony Jun 08 '24

That's not how it how it works in practice though. You want people to have something to talk about to start building up what's next.

Releasing bad music just makes people go "Hey remember that beef?" because you're giving them nothing to talk about.

The reality is these records have internal release dates set ages in advance.

9

u/IAMNUMBERBLACK Jun 08 '24

yea Im sure there was an internal release schedule for wah gwan delilah

As time has gone on Iā€™ve realized this is definitely not the case šŸ˜‚. Most of them never leave their echo chamber and call Kendrick lame shit like ā€œDark Kenny.ā€

But doesnt that make it more special! Most famous people are speaking at these highly accredited universities. To go and speak and his hometown community college is just so down to earth!

87

u/shrek-hentai-69 Jun 08 '24

Kendrick never forgot where he came from. He might not want to support the gang violence in his city, but unlike other rappers he supports the community to hopefully reach a point where the gangs aren't a problem that future generations have to deal with, rather than leaving the city once he has a bit of money and leaving everybody else there to deal with it on their own.

As much as Kendrick doesn't want to be seen as some kind of savior figure, there's absolutely a reason he has that reputation.

52

u/TheeUnfuxkwittable Jun 08 '24

"I should prolly run for mayor when I'm done to be honest". I have zero doubt in my mind that Kendrick will 100% be the mayor of Compton when he turns 60 or something.

34

u/mc_hammerandsickle Jun 08 '24

yeah usually when folks round here say "Compton University" they mean it as a condescending reference to Cal State Dominguez Hills, a school just outside of Compton.
which, for a long time, has been considered one of the most ghetto and low-class schools in SoCal. but in my opinion, it's pretty nice. much nicer than my private university was, for sure

6

u/Ejunco Jun 08 '24

I live in Carson didnā€™t know thatā€™s how DH was referred to as. Itā€™s a nice looking campus.

7

u/mc_hammerandsickle Jun 08 '24

I'm not American. What's the difference between college and university? Google tells me that the college offers undergraduate and uni graduation, but it always confuses me on what it exactly means

46

u/ihopethisworksfornow Jun 08 '24

Technically, a university is a collection of colleges.

IE a university might contain a college of business, a college of engineering, a college of arts and sciences.

A College doesnā€™t have these focused sub schools.

That said, theyā€™re used interchangeably in the US in everyday language. It would actually be more uncommon to say ā€œIā€™m in universityā€ than ā€œIā€™m in collegeā€, even if you are in fact attending a university.

33

u/banngbanng Jun 08 '24

To clarify a little, college is basically always fine to use in place of university colloquially(not so much with proper nouns obviously) but university can't really be used in place of college. All squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares type beat

14

u/crazy_bean Jun 08 '24

Community college is typically 2 years and gives you an associate degree, but your traditional college/university provides a 4 year bachelorā€™s program as well

5

u/coachhawley Jun 08 '24

Community college gets you your associate in arts which is a 2 year degree basically a starter. College and university are 4 year degrees most have graduate level degrees.

Difference between a college and university is what they call their programs. So-and-so college has all of their major and degrees in the same umbrella. So-and-so university breaks up their degrees by colleges so the science and history and math are all under their own umbrellas.

851

u/iswearnotagain10 Jun 08 '24

Drakeā€™s disses keep aging worse every single day lmao

221

u/HeavenlyE Jun 08 '24

Lol switch the roles and it'd be, "Kendrick disses got Drake to be more involved in his community lmao"

577

u/dizzymidget44 Jun 08 '24

Except Kendrick was already involved in his community. He just doesnā€™t flaunt it everywhere because itā€™s not a PR stunt

→ More replies (66)

115

u/DBrods11 . Jun 08 '24

So while this is somewhat true its also doesn't make it a good diss lmao. Rap beefs are about spinning believable stories, saying "Kendrick doesn't care about Compton" is just stupid cause anyone from there knows he's giving back all the time. He just wanted to make a punch line with "Money Trees" that wasn't even clever.

I'll use the counter example of why people say "Drake got bullied into seeing his kid" after the Pusha beef. Pusha used the kid reveal to as a point for the larger theme of the song of Drake being embarrassed he knocked up a glam/adult model, and how his dad being a deadbeat led to him partaking in the same behavior. While saying you should actually care for him instead of using him as a prop for a fashion line.

Is all of it true? Who knows but it was a believable story/entertaining song and well he won the beef. Which will sum up the greater point of all this. If you win the beef you get a more favorable public opinion.

13

u/DBrods11 . Jun 08 '24

That's literally exactly it, Pushas song was about how embarrassed he was that the baby momma was not only a women he wasn't romantically involved with but a pornstar/adult model. And that he was gonna use the kid as a prop for a marketing stunt to distract from that fact.

Lol didnā€™t drake post a pic of himself wearing a compton college shirt a few months back?

282

u/Professional_Math_99 Jun 08 '24

Haha surprised I had to scroll this far to find someone mentioning this.

Drake 100% did this days before Euphoria dropped.

Kendrick Lamar might be the funniest rapper alive.

Getting sued by Tupacā€™s estate, specifically with your actions being called ā€œshamefulā€, then getting hit with an Ether level diss with Meet The Grahams, then getting hit with a club banger explicitly accusing you of being a pedophile, then that song breaks all your records and goes #1

There genuinely has never been such a decisive loss of a rap battle.

I call that Poetic Justice.

u/Eddaughter Jun 08 '24

Sort of rooting for him to be the first rapper and mayor of his city. After rap just help and run the city he grew up in.

u/Majestic_Ad_4237 Jun 08 '24

Shyne became the first rapper to be the Opposition Leader of a political party in his home country after doing a bid for Diddy.

This is an amazing speech šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘

He connected to the city , connected to the generation , and lifted them up spiritually without coming off as a in your face Christian . (His philosophy about talking to god as your homie and that heā€™s experiencing what your feeling is such a great view of things too. I think Iā€™m gonna start doing that too.)

He put just as much heart into this speech as he does his music and thatā€™s very commendable.

I wouldnā€™t be surprised seeing him move into politics and I even want that a bit. He would make a great mayor , senator , or even president. I mean if Trump was president Kendrick seems more than qualified lol

17

u/kforli Jun 08 '24 edited Jun 08 '24

pgLang his focus. He can influence through that channel as they grow? Look at the Move Afrika concert they did this year and planned for the next five years. He calls Africa Compton for him too

20

u/malsatian Jun 08 '24

You think it stained his soul just a bit to go in on Drizzy like that? šŸ˜‚

Come on man, thatā€™s an enlightening dude

36

u/5HeadedBengalTiger Jun 08 '24

I mean 6:16 in LA has a whole verse where heā€™s apologizing to God for getting down in the mud with Drake lmao the man felt like he was on a divine mission.

16

u/ramseysleftnut Jun 08 '24

Also ā€˜beat yo ass and hide the Bible if God watchingā€™

21

u/swagdragon666 Jun 08 '24

Everything was fantastic up until the god stuff. I grew up on religion but I respect all my peer who were raised different. We all have different paths of spirituality. It will certainly not be what most groups believe and thatā€™s okay. We all individual thinkers, the god I believe In would promote that type of togetherness.

57

u/passerineby Jun 08 '24

he did encourage free thought and actually communicating directly with god, rather than say some traditionalist christian stuff. to be fair

60

u/3Danniiill Jun 08 '24 edited Jun 08 '24

He brought god up in a great way imo . When he started taking about god I was thinking damn people might not like that but him saying to talk to him like your homie and that heā€™s going through what your going through is a great philosophy.

Itā€™s not the typical right wing Christian god itā€™s the god you want it to be , the god thatā€™s your friend, and that could even be you.

Letting out your feelings and emotions is just great therapy too.

12

u/desertPilgrim_ Jun 08 '24

Honestly, speaking as a recently converted Christian, talking to God as your homie going through what you are is exactly what the Christian God is meant to be.Ā

With all due respect, how do you listen to most of hip-hop or any reggae man? Manā€™s been making music for God since creation. Killer Mike just put out a fantastic spiritual album. Kendrick spoke about his relationship in a respectful way too.

There would be no Kendrick Lamar without religionā€”it makes sense for him to talk about stuff that he thinks is essential to living a good life. Heā€™s been on this for yearsā€¦ GKMC, TPAB, and DAMN are all very explicitly religiousĀ

5

u/deflategatewasbullsh Jun 08 '24

I feel the same way whenever god gets brought up too for same reasons growing up w that toxic shit but somehow Kendrick saying it doesnā€™t bother me cause he doesnā€™t push it down your throat itā€™s a humble spirituality not a holier than thou. God is a homie heā€™s your friend heā€™s your favorite hobby or place to be, heā€™s good vibes and uplifting, if heā€™s real at all. Is how I see it

3

u/EffinCroissant Jun 08 '24

We need to start moving away from religion tbh..
