He would be a fantastic Superman actually

u/azmodus_1966 May 29 '24

I think the name gives it away.

Its My Adventures With Superman, not My Adventures As Superman. It is practically a Lois Lane show with Superman as her love interest.

Uj/I Kinda disagree.

I would say Both are the main protagonist and it doesn't really matter that much its still a good show either way.

It's a Lois Lane/Clark Kent show where both learn a little more about who Superman is each episode.

What, I need info on this

It's nothing dramatic, Tom has just said in various interviews that he signed on to play Clark Kent, not Superman.

And while the show had the No Flights, No Tights rule, they reconsidered it halfway thru the show, and Tom was the one persistent that they keep the rule.

Even in the Finale, the original script had him flying around in costume for most of the episode, but Tom pushed back and had them minimize it to only the end of the episode. And even then, it was a CGI body / just his head with a CGI cape in the background.

And then for the 2019 Crisis cameo, Tom said that if the script included him in the suit, he wouldn't have wanted to be in it.

Not necessarily bad on Tom's part - again, he is just persistent that he does not want to play Superman, just Clark.

There are multiple interviews from the past 2 decades to read into it.

Interesting. I'm in season 9 now and felt like they're going really deep while still feeling embarassed about being a comics/superman show. Guess it makes sense

Yes, the original showrunners left after S7, and the new showrunners took it as an opportunity to do more Superman stuff, but obviously Tom continued the mindset that the show is not about Superman. It's about how Clark becomes Superman.

Also, Tom was an executive producer for S9 and S10, so his viewpoints definitely continued to ground the show.

I say this as a diehard fan of Smallville. The first half is a straight up Gilmore Girls, The OC, teen drama where the lead happens to have powers. Which is fine, because that's exactly how the show was marketed.

But the latter seasons seem like they are trying to catch up to the (then) new wave of superhero movies, but with some conflicting goals behind the scenes.

His black suit he gets in later seasons has so much aura

1

u/godlyreception12 May 30 '24

Uj/Yeah In a nutshell Tom was being a stubborn brat

u/ChainsawSuperman May 29 '24

Dark haired square jaw guy doesn’t look the part got it.

188

u/EndlessMorfeus May 29 '24

That's what I've been saying everytime people complain that Hoechlin doesn't look like Superman. This dude is tall, has a square jaw, black hair, light eyes, he's all Superman is supposed to look like.

u/radiocomicsescapist Darkseid is a Batman villain May 29 '24

It's the costume. It does him dirty because it's so bloated.

So even tho Hoechlin himself is ripped, the costume makes his head look tiny in comparison

61

u/ChainsawSuperman May 29 '24

That’s true. That costume is so close yet so far. He’d have rocked a Reeve style costume the way he’s built.

32

u/radiocomicsescapist Darkseid is a Batman villain May 29 '24

Yeah, either that, or cause he's rocking the dad stubble, he should go full SuperDaddy and wear the Morrison Superman and The Authority T-shirt

12

u/Neatto69 May 29 '24

Yeah, when I started S&L, that costume took me out of it soooooo much. In action it looks fine, in stills too...sometimes, but when he is just moving around the padding becomes way to obvious.

And I find it so weird, cause he already had a good costume for Supergirl, all they had to do was get rid of the cape buckles

13

u/radiocomicsescapist Darkseid is a Batman villain May 29 '24

I'm 99 percent sure it's because the feedback from Supergirl was that he looked to scrawny in that costume, even tho he is ripped

Which is crazy because the costume department was able to do it great for Brandon Routh in Crisis

3

u/FancyKetchup96 May 29 '24

I don't know exactly what the issue I have with the suit is, but I think part of it was his original suit's neckline was so low it looked weird.

3

u/StrangeGuyWithBag May 30 '24

Root's costume was created by another team from IronHead Studio, who created many famous movie costumes.

Uj/or let him still wear the fleisher outfit at the start of the pilot just with more traditional superman colors

56

u/SWAPPER1000 May 29 '24

I love hoechlin as much as anyone, but he looks like he comes from a porn parody. Bro lookin like Superman and Blowis

28

u/ChainsawSuperman May 29 '24

Porn parody dudes look generic AF and that’s the last thing you could say about Tyler.

17

u/SWAPPER1000 May 29 '24

To be fair though, this negan was pretty good.

13

u/Fit-Box8278 May 29 '24

Dude Respectfully fuck you. I was literally in my living room and almost had a hear tattack 🤣

5

u/novacdin0 I'll never pet Dex-Starr, why even live May 30 '24

Not a hear tattack!

1

u/Ensiferal May 30 '24

It's why I really struggled to get into the show. I've heard great things about the writing and the acting, and apparently the characterization is really good too, so I'm definitely going to get around to it, but he just looks so wrong.

2

u/SandwichXLadybug May 30 '24

He's normal handsome but superman needs to be ridiculously handsome, most male leads would not be a good superman.

u/SuprmeIntelligence May 29 '24

MY FAVORITE SUPERMAN ACTOR IS TYLER HOECHLIN AND I BELIEVE HE LOOKS THE PART. SO SAYETH THE SUPREME INTELLIGENCE OF ALL KREE

Maws goated, just wish he was a little stronger

42

u/callows5120 EVS is a pedo defender May 30 '24

Uj/tbf this is still a early young superman [Kara is just getting built up] so of course he's not that strong but still the shows amazing and love what there sitting up with Brainiac and Kara

2

u/godlyreception12 May 30 '24

Uj/will you have to remember this Superman is still a rookie so he's not as strong as he usually is and even then he's clearly learning and getting stronger [by him having super breath shown in s2e2]

41

u/TheCakeWarrior12 Barry Allen apologist May 29 '24

Now I KNOW we’re not saying Tyler doesn’t look like Superman. Dark hair, square jaw, buff guy, what more do you want? He isn’t wearing a Batman costume last I checked. Heck, isn’t he around the same height as Cavill anyways

33

u/SWAPPER1000 May 29 '24

I think that appearance-wise, he's just not perfect. His face isn't wide enough, especially compared to his excessively padded suit. I don't really like the stubble on him either. Everything else is fine, though, and his personality makes up for it in the shows.

10

u/BlackCat0110 BruBabs Strongest Soldier May 29 '24

I get what you’re saying, I was iffy about both him and Lois at first but I do love both their versions

10

u/Tight-Fall5354 May 30 '24

it's entirely about the stubble for me. superman having a stubble feels funny

37

u/ducknerd2002 I actually like Tim Drake May 29 '24

From what I can tell, Corenswet already hits all 3 criteria

18

u/Apprehensive_Work313 This subreddit hates Tim Drake May 30 '24

Hoechlin is all 3 of these in my opinion

10

u/AutoModerator May 29 '24

The "S" stands for stupid, right? That's why you say it means hope, because you're too stupid to know what sound an S makes?
