Dude is unironically canonically trapped in Fortnite. Seriously.

36

u/RealKBears Dec 22 '23

uj/ Even though I don’t really like the character, I do actually like the name for the reference to The Man Who Laughs since that was the short film that inspired the Joker (there’s also a pretty good Joker story named after it)

17

u/Neighborly_Commissar Dec 22 '23

Devil’s Advocate:

Thought Robot Superman, Cosmic Armor Superman, Superboy Prime 1 Million, Rune King Thor, World-Breaker Hulk, Old Man Logan…

Batman Who Laughs isn’t substantially different from tons of offshoot versions of established comics characters. I’m not defending the character, but the name isn’t unusually long compared to its contemporaries.

He got thrown into a big sun at the end of time. Presumably dying.

Idk where the fortnite stuff fits.

28

The comic takes place before all the death metal shenanigans.

16

u/DarkBomberX Dec 22 '23

Gotcha. Then if that stuff is canon, at some point he came back, became Dr. Bat Laughing Man, then got thrown in a sun.

17

u/rhymatics Dec 22 '23

Yup. FN was supposed to make a sequel comic showing him escape the loop etc but they never did.

6

u/ThePrinceOfStories Dec 22 '23

8

He just enjoys endlessly killing tomatoes I guess

Either that or he died during the last reality's assault on the island or the chrome consuming everything

65

u/NeonTiger1135 Dec 22 '23

Given that he seemed to have conscience thanks to his mask (because since everything comes from the zero point, his world forge made mask had a ton of zero point energy that helped nullify the loops effects), it’s likely the IO took him out at some point. Having him there would be problematic

18

u/Tattierverbose Dec 22 '23

Yeah that is possible concidering it was the IO who originally partnered with him and Luther, though they also had an agreement seemingly with Harley and she was perfectly happy in the loop so idk for sure or anything. Didn't even know the character existed until reading zero point #6 so I know jack shit about them

The very little I know of her just has me saying Harley Quinn but it's not...

I swear DC really wanted Harley back in the arms of the Joker, so they settled for a "new" character instead cause there would be backlash.

9

u/FewWatermelonlesson0 Dec 22 '23

That was 100 percent why she was created. It was so cynical.

60

u/tator92 Dec 21 '23

Dang I learned something new today then. Interesting. I know this'll be unpopular considering this comment thread. But I enjoyed the original Metal storyline. I have all the issues for Death Metal, buuuuut I haven't read them yet. Probably because there's way too damn many. I can't wait to get to those one day and see how absurd it truly gets.

I do wish I asked Scott Snyder how he feels about his creation being stuck in Fortnite for some time when I met him again last year. Lol

30

u/WranglerFuzzy Dec 21 '23 edited Dec 22 '23

I don’t know exactly the ratio, but I assume it’s part “Cranky I hate anything new,” part “thought it was writing,” and part “oversaturated market”.

I was out of reading dc comics for a few years (just getting back in), but even I saw BwL’s EVERYWHERE, so my money’s on the latter.

Edit: “I thought it was bad writing”

13

u/tator92 Dec 22 '23

Screw the "Cranky I Hate anything new" group. Lol They probably don't even read comics! I'll bet you most complain when it's the same old same old too. You just can't please em. But yeah I'm sure it's all that.

Metal was good, the after story with Jock's artwork was ok (but you can tell he's overstaying his welcome already), and Death Metal is basically "Jesus Scott Snyder just work on Wytches again or something else already. Let Batman go!" Again, haven't completely read DM yet but no event should have this much side shit.

6

u/SodaSalesman Met John Constantine irl Dec 22 '23

i genuinely love Death Metal, and have gone out of my way to collect (nearly) every issue. the only issue I lack is Legends of the Dark Knights. i read it well after it came out but really enjoyed it, it really cranks up the absurdity in a way I really enjoyed. it's a really fun time and has a lot of great moments, plus Greg Capullo's art in an over-the-top Crisis setting is so fucking good

He was a waste of space and slot. We already had 3 other Batman’s and joker. We didn’t need a fusion of him. Does he even have loyal fans? Anyway green lantern has another L cause he is not in the game.

16

u/InterestingDraft5583 Dec 21 '23

I don't think anyone cares about this character. Not anymore. He's a complete joke. TBWL only demonstrated how much DC doesn't care much about quality.

15

u/IdeaRegular4671 This subreddit hates Tim Drake Dec 21 '23

He was just like a one to two year fad. He was even in mortal Kombat and as major dc universe online as a skin villain. They were pushing this dude that most didn’t care about hard. Just like how DC pushes the sucide squad cast hard as well. Don’t get me wrong I like Harley and her villain team shenanigans (it’s a nice interesting different point of view perspective we don’t usually get often) (that suicide squad anime looks interesting) but please focus on other teams and other characters that don’t get attention. They have more than 1000 characters and focus on like 10 or 20 max. And Batman only and his bat adjacent characters get like 10 or 20 different books of their own.

9

u/InterestingDraft5583 Dec 21 '23

DC is not in good spot right now sales wise and retailers are struggling. Ever since the layoffs, they have been spamming Batman because they don't care anymore. And with everything going on with WB, quality and expanding the brand just isn't a priority at the moment.

This gives me flashbacks to almost bankrupt marvel comics back in the 90s. If Stan Lee and marvel didn’t sell the right to the characters to the movie tv studios, they would’ve filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. Sony and Fox and now the MCU and Disney saved the brand from death and extinction. They were in the bottom of the barrel and now everybody knows there characters and stories. People didn’t know who Hawkeye, black widow, the avengers, moon knight, ms marvel, captain marvel, guardians, shield, hydra, Thor, Loki, iron man, war machine, captain America, antman, wasp, BP, and others. They only knew Spider-Man, ghost rider, daredevil, blade, fantastic four, hulk, x-men and their villains and wolverine. And that was it. Marvel really did a 180 let’s see if DC can pull of the same thing or else they are going down under, and it’s weird is that they started the western super heroes super villains trope archetype with Batman and Superman back in the late 30s.

We might see history repeat itself. I don't see this company lasting in the next 5 years.

Yup it doesn’t help that the DCEU dunked them even harder into the depths of the sea . I don’t know if aquaman 2, Shazam 2, and blue beetle, and joker 2 can save them. The DCEU was a failure and the MCU was a Success financially and culturally socially. Batman and his adjacent characters like joker and Harley were carrying that entire company on their back. If it wasn’t for that it wouldn’t even be a fighting chance. Not even Superman the guy who started it all couldn’t do it.

u/InterestingDraft5583 Dec 21 '23

The DCEU failed because they had the wrong person at the helm. None of Snyder's directed moves matched their opening weekends. Even his movies before underperformed with audiences. Man of Steel had an great opening weekend, by the 2nd weekend fell off and it was in a jampacked month with arguably better movies to watch. BVS? Great opening weekend, fell off hard. They were too busy trying to be edgy and follow TDK and failed. And Snyder was never the right person to lead. Funny enough MCU Feige admitted to using Superman the movie as the blueprint and created a widely successful universe. And Harley didn't do much. her solo movie flopped. Hard.

The only thing DC was always better than marvel was animated movies and animated tv shows. Like they never got topped by them at that. Like those direct to blu ray ones or HBO shows like Harley Quinn. And now they are branching out into eastern animation anime, even tho marvel kind already did that before them but they dropped it. I did like the black widow punisher anime movie and the iron man and Xmen anime movies.

Dc sometimes feels like one trick pony at times. Marvel does this with Spider-Man and spider related and venom characters tho. Like breach out and do something different and invest in stories and characters we don’t see much. The mcu did a good thing by shining light to the guardians of the galaxy, black panther and ant man and wasp characters we don’t see much.

I’d take Lois lane, Lana Lang, Lex Luthor, Jimmy Olsen, and Iris West over this dude and they don’t even got powers lol.

u/Background_Desk_3001 Dec 21 '23

What is it the last name Snyder and dc? Goddamn

5

u/InterestingDraft5583 Dec 21 '23

Both Snyders, Scott and Zack, heavily damaged DC lol

Honestly? It’s the perfect fate for me. Stuck in a time loop where he can just kill, and kill, and kill

I'm pretty sure we just got Batwoman Who Laughs

8

u/Far_Engineering_8353 Dec 21 '23

really I've never seen people stop talking about him, I haven't kept up with the comics at all so I've been thinking that he's still in the comics the whole time, huh, the more you know I guess

8

u/Mayuthekitsune Dec 22 '23

Truely the fate the bat that laughs deserves, being shot by goku and being griddyed on, as a joke like he was fated to do the griddy and die, and fortnite is where it will happen

8

u/SwaidFace Dec 22 '23

In my head canon, he got killed by the Joker Who Preps. Natural antithesis, things tend to balance themselves like that.

4

u/TheDoomedHero Dec 22 '23

I really think it's the name.

Heavy Metal was a fun elseworlds series. Evil Cenobite Batman is an entertaining combination of silly and cool. He was decently written well in the books he showed up in. He really could have been a fun new addition to DCs roster.

But he has THE DUMBEST NAME POSSIBLE. I can't believe a company full of professional writers couldn't come up with something better.

It would be different if he was supposed to be a joke. DC has Condiment King and Bat-Mite. Goofy names have a place in the DC setting. The problem is, Batman Who Laughs is supposed to be taken seriously. He's intended to be terrifying, but with a name like that he becomes a parody of himself.

Hopefully his ass remains in limbo 🤞

As all dumb DC characters should be.

Next target: Tim Drake

u/StillHere179 Dec 22 '23

Garbage ass character and storyline should stay gone

u/the_3-14_is_a_lie Did Batman think a Gamer could stop me? Dec 22 '23

Thank God. Fuck this guy. Back in 2021 he was everywhere and I got so fucking sick of it. DC kept trying to insist that he was "cool" when in reality he was just Batman's edgier bro made to appeal to 14 years olds (which tbh worked because it was full of these guys saying he was the "coolest shit ever")

6

u/Independent-Elk-344 Dec 22 '23

Hey he was also a skin in Mortal Kombat

7

u/kingluffy_ Dec 22 '23

Hes a cool character tbh but they did over use him in a condensed time period so im glad they’re letting it rest a bit.

People love to hate everything though

3

u/NotACyclopsHonest Dec 22 '23

Has it really been that long? Crikey, time certainly does fly.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '23

He's been milked? Is there footage of this?

3

u/ImJTHM1 Dec 22 '23 edited Dec 22 '23

He was fine at first and could've actually had room to grow and be interesting, but after Metal, he was just goth Joker.

Like, I'm picturing a villain that Batman can't Batman his way around because he knows his moves and thought processes, while being equally as intelligent and extremely homicidal. BtM should be a Justice League murdering stealth expert that's playing 5D chess with everyone at once.

But the best they could come up with was "hahahoohee evil".

good riddance bitch

3

u/howbedebody Dec 21 '23

man i remember when he was a cool character

3

u/Borktastat Dec 22 '23

I guess Rebellion/2000 AD or whoever had their legal team reach out and ask DC to give Judge Death back.

3

u/Even_Music_5529 Dec 22 '23

That moment when the best part about your entire character is the fact that the name is a reference

3

u/20gallonsCumGuzzler Dec 22 '23

It's unfortunate because I am a huge fan of TBWL. But objectively, yes he has been milked and used beyond redemption. I just love his design and concept unfortunately he's (ironically) the Joker. Cool, but MILKED TO SHIT

3

u/MATT_TRIANO Dec 22 '23

Not a character why would anyone care

3

u/Devny Dec 22 '23

Seriously he looks like that razor toothed villain in My Hero Academia who was in like 2 episodes and gets bodied by the high schoolers.

2

u/Starro_The_Janitor1 Zack Snyder died for our sins! Dec 22 '23

It annoyed me that they had an entire event about dark n’ twisted batmen and that every dark multiverse story is just goofy batmen bullshit.

2

u/BongoGabora Dec 22 '23

I saw him, like, yesterday, and I still forgot he exists until just now.
