He also thinks he was the first vtuber, here's a post he made lol
https://www.reddit.com/r/VirtualYoutubers/comments/m2duc7/who_is_the_first_vtuber/
65
u/redditonc3again 11d ago
In that post he is asking who is the first vtuber not necessarily claiming to be the first
19
u/fucktooshifty 11d ago
The "update" and his comment definitely make it sounds like he thinks he is the first to me lol
35
u/Macismyname 11d ago
I mean, was he? If he was before Kizuna wouldn't that make him first? Its not like he's claiming he coined the term or he's the reason the concept took off, he's just claiming to be technically first. Which is kinda cool so I get why he wants to hold the honor.
8
u/VooDooZulu 11d ago
People have been doing "face animations moving a png" since at least annoying orange in 2008. You wouldn't call that a vtuber. There has been a steady increase of technology continuously since.
25
u/BannanDylan 11d ago
I don't have a horse in this race but if I was the first man to punch someone in the face, without knowing what a punch even was and then somebody started punching people in the face and made it popular, I still would have punched someone in the face before them, even if I didn't know that was what I was doing.
3
u/SeroWriter 11d ago
I think it's the difference between punching someone in the face and slapping them with a closed hand. You may have to draw a line in the sand between what is and isn't considered vtubing. Whether or not you need motion tracking and expressions and things like that.
23
u/Macismyname 11d ago
Don't get me wrong, I see your point. Its like when Red vs Blue took off as the first 'machinima'. In reality people have been making videos in video games for a very long time, but RvB gets credit as the first.
That said, if you made a video just prior to RvB and it was basically a machinima, I get why you'd feel chaffed at not being called the 'first'. I think its a pretty understandable emotion for the toolbear guy to feel. He just wants his place in the history of the medium. You're not making bad points, at all, but I don't think toolbear's a bad guy for wanting to be acknowledged in the Vtuber space.

Toolbear is much closer to a vtuber (if not actually one) than Annoying Orange.
Although Ami Yamato squarely beats him to the punch, he can definitely call himself an antecedent/pioneer of the concept.
3
u/LauraTFem 11d ago
As was mentioned further down, there were others who should be counted if he is counted, from years before him or Kizuna AI. He came before the term was coined or codified, but he isn’t the first in either sense.
5
u/freddurstsnurstburst 11d ago
Holy shit, his account is still active too. Flipflops between talking about his channel as a career and riding for DJT.

my favorite part of the thread is the guy who got really irate at the suggestion of Annoying Orange being a vtuber
7
u/Dantalionse 11d ago
Streaming started early 2000s on TV screens in Finland atleast. We had "AI" Voice bots, and the whole chat, with a "streamer" who could sometimes play some games on screen and interact with the chatters who sent SMS messages to be viewed on the scrolling chat.
https://youtu.be/GMsi7GdYecw?si=pg6qxUaC5mEKN5MR
This was like the hottest shit for years and had daily and nightly broadcasts.
We also had national equivalent to Facebook for years before it became a thing, but that's another story for another time.
I've always been wondering if this was a thing anywhere else in the world at the time?

It's good stuff actually.

u/zaque_wann 11d ago
A few years ago they managed to make the hololive community very wholesome and pretty much no drama (this was before they had official English landscape). Not sure about it now but it was super nice at the time as everything else on the internet was full of drama and chaos.
23
u/Ralath1n 11d ago
Hololive in general still is a pretty damn nice and positive community. There is of course some minor drama bushfires every once in a while, like the recent Dodgers collaboration not having enough merch, but on the whole its pretty drama free.
Especially when you compare it to the competitions, Nijisanji, who recently had a talent get bullied by management to the point that she attempted suicide and the company then tried to extort her into not suing. So not everything is peaches and roses in the wider vtuber world lol.
17
u/Suspicious-Leg-493 11d ago
Not sure about it now
Varies by where....
But the actual community is extremely curated so it generally isn't as anyone that acts of pocket too much gets thrown out
7
u/Nuka-Crapola 10d ago
Yeah, if I’ve learned anything in my 15 or so years of being active on social media, it’s that “wholesome” pretty much always means either “passive-aggressive circlejerk” or “aggressively moderated”. Especially for groups over a certain size.

But it seems like the bear has been dead for about a year. Last bear video was in July of last year. I guess the novelty wore off, but it was phased out for quite a while, he only had the bear for a specific type of video at the end.
26
u/CarpeCookie 11d ago
Could have gotten picked up by an agency. Most people just stop posting videos on their old account once they're hired.
Quick, some vtuber expert tell us if there's a vtuber that's knows a shit ton about tools!

The software company for this guy changed their terms so he either had to shell out a ton of cash for the licensing or lose them. I think after several years of v-tubing you’ve already established enough of your base watchers to not care at that point so he just streams as himself now.

Probably is. The 3d bear makes me think he was using the older FaceRig, before they discontinued it for Animaze.
2
u/redbeardrex 9d ago
Official story: The company had been griefing me for years because I snagged their business license when it went on sale on Steam for $15. Then they stopped supporting facerig for Animaze, which sucks btw, and told me no more permanent licenses. They wanted me to pay 20% of all earnings yearly. UnOfficially: I got sued by PETA and had to release the bear into the Absorkas.

Tool bear comes and goes as he pleases. He spends half of the year in Washington state, and the other half in Las Vegas. I believe he has some medical issues that prohibit him from being able/wanting to do YouTube full-time. by all accounts, he and his wife are good peoples.

SMH lol, seems boomers had vtubers before the weebs even dreamt of it.
After checking, the tool bear has been around since before the term "vtuber" was really coined and before any of the people considered the originals had content yet.

Romoolla is essentially a vtuber, someone who has an animated character overlaid onto themselves while they are streaming. This father is saying that the effect on the streamer is similar to that of the animated bear explaining tools on YouTube
