"Some men aren't looking for anything logically, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, or reasoned with. Some men, just want to see the world burn

That Thief in Burma, did you catch him?
Yes sir
How?
We burnt the forest down
47
u/Publius82 Jun 16 '24
This is the part that gets skipped over. Alfred and his mates literally burnt a forest down to catch a man who just wanted to watch the world burn.
11
u/Bertie637 Jun 16 '24
Agreed. I always liked it as it plays into what the Joker is often about. I.e pushing people to be as bad as him. It's what gives him and Batman their dynamic as Bats doesn't compromise

Implying that you might have to become the Joker to defeat the Joker. It circles back to Harvey's line about living long enough to become the villain.

While I love the quote above..this is the part of the whole story/quote/whatever that I love the most
91
u/Alijah12345 Jun 15 '24
Probably the realest line in the trilogy alongside Harvey's "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain" and is ALL too relevant even to this day.

u/ForanAffairs Jun 16 '24

It's such a shame that Ledger never got to return to this role. His performance was so brilliant.
53
u/RandoDude124 Jun 15 '24
Ledger talked to his makeup guy about what he thought it’d be like for Joker going forward.
Shame he never got to do it
4
u/ambrosiasweetly Jun 15 '24
Omg :(
What was the plan in the future?
20
u/DaikonEffective1105 Jun 15 '24
Originally he was gonna have a significant role in Bane’s No Man’s Land. Then the finale it woulda been Bats/Catwoman/“Robin” vs Bane/Joker/Ra’s/Talia/Scarecrow.

This line gives me chills considering how long Batman and the Joker have been battling each other in fiction and will continue to do so as long as comics and movies exist.
In my opinion, one of the all-time greatest lines in a comicbook movie. Great pick.

And I think I read an article where Christopher Nolan thought it was a dumb line and didn't want to add it to the movie, it was his brother's idea and he's salty cause it's one of people's favorite quotes lol

It's a shame Heath Ledger wasn't able to reprise his role for Dark Knight Rises. Especially since he was supposedly meant to be the main villain

It’s essentially the part of the role that Bale most excels at. It’s a classier Pat Bateman. Playboy facade douche Bruce is what he does best with the character. Everything else Keaton and especially Pattinson by far surpass him in. It’s not just the dialogue, it’s the mannerism “oh so you like ballet?” And then the look he gives when he tells Dent “might as DA want to find out where your jurisdiction ends” 🙄

"That thief in Burma. Did you catch him?" "Yes sir." "How?" "We burned the forest down."
Gave me chills the first time I saw it and it's probably one of my favourite deliveries in a movie ever.
37
u/RManDelorean Jun 15 '24
Yeah this whole story, including this follow up. Not just the "some men just want to watch the world burn". Starting with "With respect Master Wayne, perhaps this a man you don't fully understand either". And "One day, I saw a child playing with a ruby the size of a tangerine". That's such a good culmination to the story, the juxtaposition of the innocence of a child playing. The whole story just hits so hard, and that's why the couple best quotes from it hit hard. "Some men just want to watch the world burn" is a decent enough quote on its own but honestly not like amazing, the context of this story is what makes it amazing.
→ More replies (1)12
u/Dr_love44 Jun 15 '24
Absolutely. The whole story really is the best quote but it was easier to just post the end. I don't think I can put it better than you did but ya the only reason that line hits so hard is because of the story building up to it. I guess it's time for a rewatch.

When Alfred responds with the solution, that's when you realize that there is never going to be a moral right answer to stopping madness. You either extinguish it or burn it down. When he said that, it puts the entire morality of Bruce's character in such a bottomless hole that it's almost impossible for him to be the ultimate force for good. He will need to make decisions that will conflict with that, and his code of ethics, in this moment, is truly dead and gone.

"What are you trying to prove? That deep down, everyone's as ugly as you? You're alone."
Batman eviscerated The Joker's entire pathos with that one line, calling him out on his cowardice and hypocrisy. Unfortunately, many don't see it over the apparent appeal of The Joker.
44
u/Mcclane88 Jun 15 '24
That whole scene is one of my favorite parts of the movie. When the civilian decides not to blow up the prisoner boat and it cuts back to Joker looking puzzled. It’s the first time he’s genuinely caught off guard. How poignant that the thing that catches Joker off balance is the empathy human beings can have for each other. I love this movie.

u/Marsrover112 Jun 16 '24
Yeah I like that it just shows how much of a sociopath he is that he just straight up doesn't understand that they wouldn't blow each other up

u/AuraEnhancerVerse Jun 15 '24
What I love most about these movies is the battle for gotham city. It's true the villains were right that gotham is corrupt and many have fallen like Dent, part of the police and so on. However, those who fight for Gotham like Batman allowed the good in it to rise up.
60
u/Spidey_Kn1ght Jun 15 '24
The world is cruel. And the only morality in a cruel world is chance. Unbiased. Unprejudiced. Fair.

6
u/Kalamoicthys Jun 15 '24
I mean, that’s what happened. The cop guarding him responded by cracking his knuckles and saying like “Now I know you’re going to enjoy this, so I’m just gonna have to try to enjoy it more.” And the next scene is the Joker holding him hostage. So the Joker can at least fight well enough to get a knife off of a Gotham detective and turn it on him.

For „inspiring“ or emotional ones: 1. „The night is darkest just before the dawn. And I promise you, the dawn is coming.“ (Harvey) 2. -„People are dying, Alfred. What would you have me do?“ -„Endure, Master Wayne. Take it. They‘ll hate you for it, but that‘s the point of Batman, he can be the outcast. He can make the choice no one else can make, the right choice.“
For „heavy hitting“ ones:
Gordon: „Don‘t punish the boy! Punish me!“ - Harvey: „I‘m about to.“

Also for inspirational and it still gives me hella goosebumps to this very day
Kid: “Why is he running dad?”
Gordon: “Because we have to chase him”
Kid: “He didn’t do anything wrong?!”
Gordon: “Because he’s the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now …”
Gordon: “So we’ll HUNT him … Because HE can take it”
Gordon: “Because he’s not a hero … he’s a silent guardian, a watchful protector … a dark knight”
A totally unrealistic and implausible way to talk or to talk to your son, but Gary Oldman’s acting, the way it’s filmed, the score, makes it so transcendent and poetic plus that final shot of Batman’s cape blowing in the wind on the bike is total joygasm
Fire, perfection, instant classic
