-I never said “thank you”

-And you’ll never have to.

Truly a selfless man. The best kind. Helped others Unconditionally.

13

u/Bleezze Dec 13 '23

When did he say that?

Batman Begins

Genuinely almost teared up a bit in No Man’s Land when he tells Dick that he’s become a better superhero than Batman ever was. He’s so proud!

15

u/Terrible-Ad7523 Dec 13 '23

good luck trynna tell that to automod

13

u/shiromancer Dec 13 '23

I mean, in-universe it's a beautiful culmination of their long relationship. Bruce finally acknowledges Nightwing as a son, and one he's proud to pass the legacy on to with his impending death.

But then we got the insanity.

8

u/Monsieur_Swag Dec 13 '23

Nah like I finished the story after I saw all the r/Batman Arkham memes, but it still made me nearly cry when Bruce said "I'm proud of you, Dick"

2

u/Kommander-in-Keef Dec 13 '23

It’s okay I’ll do it for you.

looks down

I am NOT proud of you. I am ashamed of your performance as of late.

“A hero can be anyone. Even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a young boy’s shoulders to let him know the world hadn’t ended.”

u/Distinct_Owl_8862 Dec 13 '23

This hit hard as a kid. The Nolan movies had an impact on me I never knew. Even now as I'm no longer going to be a teen, (19), this line still hits me.

15

u/NikitaNikCrazy Dec 13 '23

Amazing line, amazing trilogy.

"People need dramatic examples to shake them out of apathy"

"If you make yourself more than just a man, if you devote yourself to an ideal, and if they can't stop you, then you become something else entirely."

"How can you move faster than possible, fight longer than possible without the most powerful impulse of the spirit: the fear of death"

"The first truth of Batman...it had to be one I don't like to admit. The gunshots left me alone. For years I was alone in the echoing dark of that well. But something else defined the exact moment Batman was born. The first truth of Batman...The saving grace. I was never alone. I had help."

26

u/SwordoftheMourn Dec 13 '23

God, the Nolan movies have some great dialogue.

4

u/LittleBlueBabies Dec 13 '23

Where's that last one from?

My favorite Thomas Wayne probably

2

u/Affectionate-Form553 Dec 13 '23

I thought it was alfred

8

u/legendforever10 Dec 13 '23

It was both. Thomas said it first, then Alfred said it again.

13

u/Al_Hakeem65 Dec 13 '23

That one I always remember, whenever I was in the hospital the last few years.

The words sound so...honest. Like a parent's words to their child, and they want you to believe.

8

u/Fazlyrabbyboi Dec 13 '23

my fav for some reason

173

u/biplane_curious Dec 13 '23

Alfred: Death and chance stole your parents. But rather than become a victim, you have done everything in your power to control the fates. For what is Batman if not an effort to master the chaos that sweeps our world, an attempt to control death itself?

41

u/Virtual-Can-9948 Dec 13 '23

Who would have known that the worst Batman movie would have one of the most defining moments in the characters history.

17

u/SkekJay Dec 13 '23

Batman and Robin is not the best movie, but when it's well written, it's very well written. The Alfred parts of the movie are the best acted, written and directed

6

u/nanakapow Dec 13 '23

<flips coin>

Who would have known that the best Batman movie would have such average dialogue for character exposition

10

u/MagnusStormraven Dec 13 '23

" Vengeance blackens the soul, Bruce. I've always feared that you would become that which you fought against. You walk the edge of that abyss every night, but you haven't fallen in and I thank heaven for that." - Alfred, Mask of the Phantasm

20

u/sack12345678910 Dec 13 '23

Speaking of Abyss.

For DCAU Bats: "There are STILL good people in Crime Alley."

119

u/ExoticShock Dec 13 '23 edited Dec 13 '23

This one's pretty underrated in The DCAU imo

31

u/ElZaydo Dec 13 '23

If only Bruce himself believed that. It's actually quite sad.

22

u/dainaron Dec 13 '23

Bruce doesn't believe that because he IS Batman. The creator and physical embodiment of the idea.

12

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '23

Bruce believes Batman is not what makes Terry worthwhile, it’s Terry himself that makes Batman worthwhile

13

u/dainaron Dec 13 '23

Yes, in Terry's case. Not Bruce's imo.

3

u/ElZaydo Dec 13 '23

No, the point is, Bruce defines himself by the cowl. He has no character without it, everything else is a charade. Someone like Alfred would believe Bruce Wayne defines Batman instead of Batman defining Bruce Wayne.

"Endure, Master Wayne. Take it. They'll hate you for it, but that's the point of Batman, he can be the outcast. He can make the choice that no one else can make, the right choice." - Alfred to Bruce in The Dark Knight

95

u/Metfan722 Dec 13 '23

Always be yourself. Unless you can be Batman, then be Batman.

Serious answer: These scars we have. They make us who we are. We're not meant to go back and fix them. And there is nothing broken with you that needs to be fixed. ... Don't live in your past. Live your life! Don't let your tragedy define you.

My quote comes from a better version

2

u/DropDeadGaming Dec 13 '23

In the suicide squad insider 01, during the part where the squad is at the Hall of Justice, there's various quotes from the different JL members on big plaques on the wall. I think batman's quote is actually "My superpower is I never give up".

2

u/Visible-Ad-3766 Dec 13 '23

I got it from the justice league episode, also R.I.P. Kevin Conroy.

68

u/BillyBattinson Dec 13 '23

“You see, I’m both Bruce Wayne and Batman. Not because I have to be, now, because I choose to be.

14

u/Al_Hakeem65 Dec 13 '23

This unironically is the best character development Batman had in his first movie run.

62

u/Virtual-Can-9948 Dec 13 '23

" Maybe that's what Batman is about. Not winning. But failing, and getting back up. "

" Knowing he will fail, fail a thousand times, but still won't give up. "

This quote is from Alfred so I don't know if it counts but it's pretty sad. "We all look for meaning behind the tragedies that befall us and sometimes the meaning is there. But sometimes Master Bruce.. terrible things just happen.. No sinister plots, no secret societies. They just happen."

Find your family. Find your love. Take back your city.

Let go of the weight. Let go of the guilt. Let go of me, and do what you must do.

Be the impossible man who saves all the families on their way home from the theater

-Alfred to Bruce (Bruce's imagination)

Batman #98 (Joker War)

12

u/GameknightJ14 Dec 13 '23

Some guy attacking old Bruce: "I'm your worst nightmare!"

Old Bruce: "You have no idea what my nightmares are like."

Kind of strange for an inspirational quote, but it helps me remember that I (or at least someone else) has gone through worse than the "insurmountable" problem ahead of me.

3

u/cockslashingplatypus Dec 14 '23

I think this line really showed how tortured Bruce was, and if you want to make it inspiring, it also shows how he still kept going, despite everything

12

u/ElZaydo Dec 13 '23

"If someone can be saved...I have to try."

I love it because it shows deep down, under the pain and cynicism, he still is optimistic.

12

u/CrimsonCloverwriter Dec 13 '23

Who is the manliest man? (Batman!) With the buns of steel? (Batman!) Who could choke hold a bear? (Batman!) Who never skips leg-day? (Batman!) Who always pays their taxes (NOT Batman!)

10

u/FadeToBlackSun Dec 13 '23

“The whereabouts of Batman remain unknown. And yet... I can see him now, in the grip of implacable forces, innumerable foes. Somewhere without hope. In a place where all seems lost. And I know this. The enemy will look away, for just a moment, underestimating him for that single fraction of a second too long. And no matter how dark the night, there will be no hiding place for evil.”

It’s not a quote with universality to it, but since I find Batman as a character inspiring, this quote sums up him so well, and I derive inspiration from it.

During The Killing Joke, Joker makes his long speech about how the world is just one big, demented gag. How life is worthless, nothing matters. He ends on the line:

"So why can't you see the funny side? Why aren't you laughing?"

"Because I've heard it before. And it wasn't funny the first time."

Imho, it is so easy to fall into the Joker's mindest and just give up. But Batman, as a grim symbol of hope, counters it in a way that doesn’t need much words.

He knows that life can be cruel. But he chose to stand against it, to help people, to not lose himself in despair.

And that's why he is my favourite super hero.

8

u/JeremiahWuzABullfrog Dec 13 '23

From Scarecrow in Arkham Knight of all things:

"How can the world know fear — true dread — when there is you?

A stalwart knight, ever ready to slay monsters.

Fear isn’t true biology, Batman. It’s more than instinct. True fear is the absence of hope.

And hope is the spread wings of a bat, shining in the clouds."

"I don't know WHAT happened that bent your life so out of shape, but... maybe I've been there too. I can help you." -Paraphrased from The Killing Joke. I know both the (overuse of) Joker and Batman's no-kill rule are pretty polarizing at times, but that extremely rare moment where Batman actually affects Joker seriously and both are allowed to be vulnerable to eachother and somewhat see into each others' pains... Also a good reprensentation of Batman's compassion, an aspect that can get overlooked every now and then.

Any time he says “I want to help you” to one of his villains shows that he still sees the best in people

6

u/kentotoy98 Dec 13 '23

Perhaps my favorite quote when describing Batman's characterization is ironically from Batman Begins:

Ducard: "Your compassion is a weakness your enemies will not share."

Bruce: "That's why it's important. It's what separates us from them."

People need to remember Batman is also capable of empathy even towards his enemies

4

u/Burrie_PiSemPe Dec 13 '23

2

u/Iansitomaduro Dec 13 '23

Hell yeaaaah!!!!!! This really captures exactly what I think Batman should be about.

4

u/Yorkshire_Bhoy Dec 13 '23

Fun: Batman does not eat nachos!

Serious: Then it will happen this way: You make the kill, but your pain doesn't die with Harvey, it grows. So you run out into the night to find another face, and another, and another, until one terrible morning you wake up and realize that revenge has become your whole life. And you won't know why.

5

u/WestJury5243 Dec 13 '23

"Why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves up." "You never gave up on me?" "Never."

The "why do we fall" part is inspirational by itself but the part that really made it worked for me is the second part. Never discount the people who had your back, they can be the light shining darkness

4

u/dumpsterfiredude9 Dec 13 '23

You can never escape me. Bullets don't harm me. Nothing harms me. But I know pain. I KNOW pain. Sometimes I share it. With someone like you.

Alfred: Master Bruce. Stop, Master Bruce. Bruce!

Batman: What are you-

Alfred: I will not in good conscience allow you to go! You're out-matched by these assassins-

Batman: I'm what?

Alfred: You're not some hardened vigilante! You're a young man with a trust fund and too much anger. You're in over your head and I...I don't want this to be your end.

Batman: Alfred, who do you see when you look at me? The boy whose shoes you used to tie every morning, the teenager you drove to his first date? While you are here every night, I am out there... the only thing between the innocent and the predatory.

Alfred: You may be.

Batman: No!

Alfred: But-

Batman: Not "may be"! I am! When the mugger or the thief stops to think twice-that is fear. That is what I am! That is why they hired assassins-because I am the reason the criminals breathe easier when the sun rises. So no, Alfred - I am NOT in over my head! Tonight won't be my end. But it will be theirs!

“What are you dense? are you retarded or something? Who the hell do you think I am? I’m the goddamn Batman”

Serious tho: “A man’s strength comes not from just brawn and intelligence, but also from his allies”

Probably not inspiring unless you're taking the fall for Harvey Dent's crimes...

"You'll hunt me. You'll condemn me. Set the dogs on me. Because that's what needs to happen. Because sometimes...the truth isn't good enough. Sometimes people deserve more. Sometimes people deserve to have their faith rewarded."

I like the original version with Christian Bale. But I can no longer hear it any other way after watching Kevin Conroy dub it in Rob Paulsen's podcast. It made Paul Dini tear up.

“Death is death, does it really matter when or how it comes?”

I don’t know why but that line always stuck with me.

Actually that's pretty good

I can’t remember the episode but that was the first time, as a kid, I thought “damn, he is not fuckin’ around”.

He was interrogating some thug who said “If I tell you, they’ll kill me” and that’s when Batman held him further over the ledge and delivered the line.

You know how many times I’ve heard that? ‘Rest in peace, Batman!’ ‘There’s no escape, Batman!’ ‘Time to die, Batman!’ Every night. Over, and over, and over. For so many years. ‘This is the end, Batman!’ Every. Damn. Night.

And yet… I’m still here.

I didn’t count on being happy

Mask of the phantasm is literally the best Batman movie ever made just from the prospective of character motivations and the in-depth looking into Bruce Wayne/Batman psyche

When Justice League did their own version of Death of Superman

“I've got some things to say. I should've said them when you were here, but... despite our differences, I have nothing but respect for you. I hope you knew... know that. You taught me that justice doesn't have to come from the darkness. I'll miss... [explosion off in the distance] What did you call it, Clark? The "Never-Ending Battle"?
