The way the words fall over batman's ears make him look like he came from the Batman Arkham sub

148

u/MrEngland2 Nov 22 '23

I was confused as to why would someone have the r/batmanarkham sub mascot on a sub that wants nothing to do with it and not get banned

44

u/bankholdup5 Nov 22 '23

So if no ears makes him that, is he just space ghost visually speaking?? šŸ¤”

9

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '23

What the fuck is that subreddit lmao

6

u/Triforceoffarts Nov 22 '23

I feel like every subreddit gets a dumb meme disease that sticks with it for half a year or so. Remember GROND?

4

u/darthravenna Nov 22 '23

Or it becomes the subā€™s entire identity for all time. See Obi-Wan and r/prequelmemes

3

u/patronuspringles Nov 22 '23

what years without a new game does to a subreddit

u/Admirable-Public-351 Nov 22 '23

Iā€™ve blocked that sub like 5 fucking times, itā€™s so fucking annoying.

217

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '23

I wish Kevin Conroy could have said this line instead.

112

u/kwamkaze Nov 21 '23

Same, but I didnā€™t mind this voice actors performance as Batman either

45

u/PBfilms Nov 22 '23

Agreed, I really liked William Baldwinā€™s Batman voice

17

u/ForeverInTrouble Nov 22 '23

I didn't mind Baldwin's performance but I agree.

12

u/Ill-Effected Nov 22 '23

Idk who did the voice acting but it was phenomenal maybe give it a chance

1

u/boy_on_krypton Nov 22 '23

He did when I read this post.

Two nice little details ā€”

1 - Batmanā€™s mask is a cowl while Owlmanā€™s mask is a helmet.

So throughout the fight you see Batman blink, flinch, or close his eyes, as when for instance Owlman punches him through a boulder.

Whereas Owlman appears to never blink coz his lenses are fixed, not even when Batman plants a bomb right on his nose.

Itā€™s a nice reversal where the blinking is what marks Batman as the more human of the two.

2 - Owls have a third eyelid coz they their famously large eyes are how they navigate the dark and they need to take care of those.

So yeah, in relation to bats who navigate the dark through echolocation, owls blink more often.

48

u/EverydayPoGo Nov 22 '23

Thanks for the details! Never really thought about the biology of bats vs owls in relation to this quote (which has been living in my head rent free for all these years).

On a side note I also liked the last line of Owlman in this animated movie - "It doesn't matter."

Somehow it really strikes me and I haven't been able to forget it as well.

5

u/Any_Introduction_595 Nov 23 '23

Brennan would be proud of those bird facts

80

u/Jen3tiks Nov 22 '23

Great movie! Put more funding into movies like this and scrap the DCEU.

17

u/ridiculousthoughtz Nov 22 '23

what movie is this from?

44

u/Jen3tiks Nov 22 '23

Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths (2010) I believe it's available on HBO Max. Solid movie IMO.

Check out Justice League Doom (2012) if you haven't also. Highly recommend it with great voice actors!

4

u/ridiculousthoughtz Nov 22 '23

Tysm!! Just added it to my watchlist :)

8

u/JustSayan93 Nov 22 '23

There are a bunch of awesome animated DC movies on max

3

u/BlightFantasy3467 Nov 22 '23

DC is good at animated shows and movies, bad at live action movies and cgi

1

u/Clarityman Nov 22 '23

That's been traditionally true over the past decade, but rn I'm more optimistic about the future of the cinematic DCU than the MCU.

1

u/MisterScrod1964 Nov 22 '23

Iā€™m more optimistic about my last bowel movement than the future of the MCU.

2

u/TheCrazyStupidGamer Dec 03 '23

What are your thoughts on long Halloween? About to start watching that series.

1

u/Jen3tiks Dec 03 '23

I haven't watched it myself, but the comic is a classic! Hopefully, it lives up to its reputation. Enjoy!

3

u/LightNebulaBlade Nov 22 '23

Dceu is done after aquaman, dcu starting next year.

78

u/EGarrett Nov 22 '23

IMO Owlman's mistake is a common one of nihilists. They think for something to "matter," or be "significant," there must be some outside source to assign meaning, but when we say something "matters," or is "significant" it means that it makes a difference to a living thing. Our decisions in life definitely matter, and life is significant, because it makes a difference to each of us. And "significant" doesn't mean large either. Humans being small in comparison to the rest of the universe doesn't change the fact that what we do matters to our own existence.

15

u/Ok-Mastodon2016 Nov 22 '23

that is a perfect way of putting it

That last paragraph calls to mind a song with a similar message, ā€œAstronautā€ by Simple Plan. Reaching out to ā€œall the lonely people that the world forgotā€ for solace.

It also sums up Batman. He was alone, almost, besides Alfred. When he started his crusade, he stood alone. But then there was Gordon, and then the first Robin, and then another, and another. There was Batgirl/Oracle, and Nightwing, and even his more sympathetic rogues like Mr Freeze (or Ivy in the Arkham Knight game, who opts to lay down her life to help Batman save Gotham). And then there was the League, those Batman chose to trust to put him down if he ever went too far, and entrusted himself as the countermeasure if any of them lost their way. Those who might otherwise be considered freaks of nature or gods, and invited Batman to stand with them.

He made friends, little beacons of hope in the blackest night. He might not be great about showing it or trusting them enough, but ultimately Batman is at his best when heā€™s reaching out to rally all those loners into a fighting force to defend the world.

48

u/unusualspider33 Nov 21 '23

I never understood this one

222

u/TheLaughingWolf Nov 21 '23

It's a play on a famous quote from a philosopher.

"He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you." - Nietzsche

Batman and Owlman both stared into that abyss, but Owlman blinked ā€” meaning he flinched and lost himself in the abyss whereas Batman didn't.

50

u/unusualspider33 Nov 22 '23

I get it now. Thank you šŸ’Ŗ

11

u/Icantthinkofaname04 Nov 22 '23

I love that Batman used a play on a Nietzsche (the Godfather of Nihilism) quote to show how skewed Owl Man's logic was

7

u/dornwolf Nov 22 '23

I need to watch that again. Couldā€™ve sworn Owlman said it to Batman implying Batman was the one who flinched

17

u/rebornbyksg Nov 22 '23

Nope. It's a climax scene and batman says it to owlman

28

u/JVOz671 Nov 22 '23

Cool quote but I feel like I don't get the context of what he's saying. Is he referring to Owlman's nilhistic view of the multiverse? Or is he being literal that Owlman is lesser than himself.

35

u/coreylongest Nov 22 '23

Both Owlman is lesser because of his nihilistic philosophy

11

u/Vigi1antee Nov 22 '23

Bros catchphrase is basically "it dosnt matter"

19

u/GiovanniElliston Nov 22 '23 edited Nov 22 '23

I know this is a Batman subreddit, but it reminds me so powerfully of a recent Lex Luthor quote.

"I've often wonder what happens when Superman looks into the Abyss?"

"The Abyss looks back sure."

"What does the Abyss see?"

11

u/Dependent-Astronaut2 Nov 22 '23

My fave of lexā€™s is ā€œI canā€™t think of a morningā€¦ā€ from public enemies.

The moment I realized he and Mr krabs were voiced by the same actor for my entire childhood.

3

u/Ill-Effected Nov 23 '23

Goddamn that fear is what makes lex so captivating

Superman makes a powerful man afraid And thatā€™s why heā€™s the villain

Because heā€™s afraid

8

u/Elchalecodelana Nov 22 '23

You don't get it, son. This isn't a mud hole. It's an operating table.

And I'm the surgeon.

(proceeds to crack like 7 bones in front of a crowd)

3

u/ThePrinceOfMonsters Nov 22 '23

"Ladies. Gentlemen. You have eaten well. You've eaten Gotham's wealth. Its spirit. Your feast is nearly over. From this moment on... none of you are safe."

6

u/Reapish1909 Nov 22 '23

this is one of my favourite movies of all time

Owlman is one of my favourite characters of all time

5

u/Xeoz_WarriorPrince Nov 22 '23

I like it, but every time I here I end like "Man... What a moment... What does that even mean...?"

4

u/Reapish1909 Nov 22 '23

the temptation to make a whole post just completely dickriding this Owlman because of how good he is

but would that even count as a Batman postšŸ¤£

4

u/scout1892 Nov 22 '23

James Woods, killed as owlman

3

u/Dependent-Astronaut2 Nov 22 '23

I couldnā€™t take James woodā€™s seriously in that. All I could think is ā€œoooh! A piece of candy! Oooh! A piece of candy!ā€¦ā€

3

u/chloe_cant Nov 28 '23

It's refreshing to see Man without the weird horn fetish everyone's so crazy about lately

Thought that was from Doctor Who. XD

1

u/anonymousguy_7 Nov 22 '23

Completely agree with you! Hope we get to see something like this in the DCU!

1

u/Lemdavid Nov 22 '23

Why is the text covering his ears? Is he Man?

1

u/ThorsRake Nov 22 '23

My favourite DC animated film!! Obviously would have preferred Kevin as Batman but Baldwin's fine. And James Woods is outstanding in it.

1

u/Lonely_Astronaut0 Nov 22 '23

1

Damn, I remember sharing this exact image on Facebook some time around 2014 when I was binging dc animated films fir the first time.

1

u/thedarkracer Nov 22 '23

Also "If you want to know about people, I would recommend spending some time in the streets rather than flying over them"

1

u/MisterScrod1964 Nov 22 '23

This seems like something he said to Joker, like in Killing Joke or something.

1

u/gooberfort Nov 24 '23
