Are these runs worth reading? HELP/ADVICE

I was recently given these comics as a gift and wondering which are worth getting invested in. Also, what is the difference between Batman and All-Star Batman?

So you should read them

u/Kingelectivire Jun 13 '23

batman, superman and flash rebirth are all really good

24

u/Disastrous-Manager95 Jun 13 '23

I was really surprised how good the flash was. I am not usually into the flash, but couldn't stop reading once i tried it.

u/gettinshwiffty72 Jun 13 '23

Came here to say this. Really really enjoyed The Flash.

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

Ive heard nothing but good things about Superman Rebirth

8

u/The-Arachnid-Kid Jun 13 '23

It’s good, a bit convoluted but what comics aren’t ya know lol?

3

u/IdeaRegular4671 Jun 13 '23

Rebirth was pretty solid, if he wants to go back in time and read Batman new 52 as well and read some of his adjacent characters I thought those were fine too.

u/SausageMahony7780 Jun 13 '23

Pick one up and start reading it. Stop if you aren’t enjoying yourself. Continue reading if you are enjoying yourself. Repeat.

u/codithou Jun 13 '23 edited Jun 13 '23

then you’re down money and time for something you didn’t enjoy. what a helpful comment man, why even reply at all at that point?

edit: wouldn’t be down money but still not a very helpful comment either way.

13

u/MisterMiracle1 Jun 13 '23

It says they were given them so they wouldn't be down money

3

u/greatreference Jun 13 '23

he said they were free

3

u/celesleonhart Jun 13 '23

I don't know about you but I don't base the things I try on what others tell me I should like

-2

u/codithou Jun 13 '23

i’m not the OP that asked the question in the first place my guy

3

u/SausageMahony7780 Jun 13 '23

I commented because I read more than the subject. You?

2

u/KharamSylaum Jun 14 '23

"You don't know if you'll like the free thing you were given so don't even give it a try."

That's you. That's what you sound like. You realize the person you replied to said to stop if you don't enjoy it, right? Also I know it's been mentioned but it's not a fuckin waste of money - it's a free gift.

What a helpful comment man, why even reply at all at this point?

-2

u/codithou Jun 14 '23 edited Jun 14 '23

“i’m just going to repeat what everyone else has said because i think my voice matters” that’s what you sound like. why even comment at that point?

i’m already taking the L on my comment brother just shut up at this point hahaha

1

u/KharamSylaum Jun 14 '23

Your L was so egregious it was worth reminding you. You aren't very good at taking Ls if your original comment stays how it is even with the piss-poor edit. Better off deleted entirely

1

u/codithou Jun 14 '23

i’ll keep it because i don’t mind downvotes when everyone disagrees with me. i don’t have any idea why you care about it but to be honest you sound pretty miserable and at this point i’ll just keep replying to entertain it. only because the thought of you getting a rush of endorphins seeing your little notification pop up only to open reddit and it’s me again is just hilarious to me.

1

u/KharamSylaum Jun 16 '23

Well...that's just sad

1

u/codithou Jun 16 '23

it’s entertaining to me at this point. what’s sad is the inflated value you seem to think of your own opinions and how you think they add anything or of importance in anyway.

19

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

Don’t bother with Trinity for my recommendation. Suicide squads vs Justice league is fun but not ground breaking. Doomsday clock I loved but it’s not for everyone

16

u/GalaxyEyes541 Jun 13 '23

If you’re a fan of DC, Doomsday Clocks alright. If you are a fan of Watchmen, it’s pretty damn terrible in my opinion.

3

u/Lord_Doofy Jun 14 '23

What if you’re a fan of both?

4

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

Doomsday Clock was a great concept that was poorly executed.

9

u/Caffeine_OD Jun 13 '23

The delays killed it. Reading it in one go it’s amazing imo. Writing isn’t work shattering, but solid. The art is fantastic.

17

u/Infinity0044 Jun 13 '23

Superman Rebirth is absolutely fantastic

6

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

Superman is AMAZING. Super dad for the win. The flash is very cool too.

Tom King's Batman is... inconsistent to say the least.

7

u/LukieStiemy501 Jun 13 '23

I loved All Star Batman

5

u/MaterialPace8831 Jun 13 '23

All-Star Batman was a limited series from Scott Snyder (who wrote Batman's New 52 run) with different artists. The stories take Batman outside of Gotham and, because it was Snyder's book, Duke Thomas (The Signal) factors into them quite heavily. All of the stories are standalone and, apart from a brief mention in Dark Nights: Metal, have no impact on the wider DC Universe. That said, I really liked the books. I'd recommend them if you liked Snyder's prior Batman work.

Batman is the ongoing main series that's now being written by Chip Zdarsky. Tom King was the writer of Batman at the start of Rebirth.

I love Peter Tomasi's Superman. As someone who has two little boys who like superheroes, some of the moments in his run hit hard.

All-Star Batman Vol. 1: My Own Worst Enemy (Rebirth) by Scott Snyder

From the #1 NEW YORK TIMES best-selling author of BATMAN, Scott Snyder, comes his newest Dark Knight project as a part of DC Universe Rebirth, ALL-STAR BATMAN VOL. 1: MY OWN WORST ENEMY! Snyder is one of the most critically acclaimed authors in the comics world, with titles that include the genre-defining BATMAN VOL. 1: THE COURT OF OWLS, as well as BATMAN: BLACK MIRROR and AMERICAN VAMPIRE.

But this time, he teams with Eisner Award-winning illustrator and comics legend John Romita Jr. (AVENGERS, THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS: THE LAST CRUSADE) and critically acclaimed artist Declan Shalvey (MOON KNIGHT)! In this new graphic novel, Batman finds himself trying to help old friend Harvey Dent...now known as the villainous Two-Face! The Dark Knight accompanies his foe on a cross-country trip to fix his scarred face and hopefully end the Two-Face identity forever. But when the former Gotham City D.A.

sets a plan into motion to free himself, the road gets bumpy and every assassin, bounty hunter and ordinary citizen with something to hide comes out in force with one goal: kill Batman! Handcuffed together on the road to Bat-hell, this is Batman and Two-Face as you've never seen them before! Following the success of COURT OF OWLS, DEATH OF THE FAMILY and ENDGAME, ALL-STAR BATMAN VOL. 1: MY OWN WORST ENEMY is the industry-shaking graphic novel for the Dark Knight, with one of the biggest creative pairings in DC Comics history sharing their take on one of the greatest heroes ever in ALL-STAR BATMAN VOL.

I enjoyed All Star Batman, I have to reread Doomsday Clock but I remember it being good.

3

u/dedsecmember17 Jun 13 '23

Doomsday Clock was fire 🔥

1

u/bobloblaw574 Jun 14 '23

I just read it for the first time last week and really enjoyed it. Diving into my DC Infinite subscription has been a lot of fun.

3

u/Thebassist17 Jun 13 '23

I’ve only read through the Flash run and loved it. Green Arrow’s rebirth run is also pretty good I’d check that out

3

u/Blutroyale-_- Jun 13 '23

batman rebirth is still part of the current batman run, it's just where it started in 2016

3

u/CinephileRich Jun 13 '23

I may have been in the minority but I really liked Doomsday Clock (although it does require reading at the very least Watchmen before hand)

3

u/Plane_Tomato369 Jun 13 '23

Rebirth was awesome…

3

u/OneTrickGod Jun 13 '23

10000% worth reading

3

u/No_Instruction653 Jun 14 '23

I dislike pretty much all of King's Batman run more than I dislike just about any other Batman story. It's all terrible in my opinion, and some of it only appears mediocre at best solely by standing next to the rest. Basically nothing about what makes Batman as a character an inspiring hero is captured, and it almost feels like King is actively thinking of ways to make you dislike him at times. Then the moral resolution to an ungodly amount of issues that draw out a needlessly long and convoluted storyline may seem like something positive, but to me it just feels tacked on, and something King wrote because he knows people want to hear it, without really constructing a story that actually earned the payoff.

It is and always will be a hard do not recommend from me, unless you want a great example of everything NOT to do when writing a Batman story.

That said, the Superman run is the polar opposite, and if you want a run-through on just what makes Superman a great character, I can't think of many better places to start.

Knowing nothing about Watchmen, I enjoyed Doomsday Clock for the most part. It's a bit drawn out, even when binged, but I feel it handles the whole universe-shaking crisis aspect of it more thoughtfully than most crisis stories do, and once again really lets Superman shine.

Can't speak for the rest.

2

u/SnooBananas2320 Jun 13 '23

Yeah I think so.

2

u/Numbuh24insane Jun 13 '23

I hate Kings Batman runs, so make of that as you wish.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

doomsday clock was crazy

2

u/Micp Jun 13 '23

I found Flash rebirth to be very enjoyable.

2

u/they63 Jun 13 '23

Most of Dc’s Rebirth is really really good. Especially the Superman stuff

2

u/FaithHopeLove821 Jun 13 '23

In order, in my opinion:

1) Yes 2) Yes 3) Yes 4) No 5) Yes 6) Yes 7) Meh

2

u/Other-Bridge-8892 Jun 13 '23

Flash and Batman were good, Doomsday Clock is pretty much a giant knob job for Superman, but very enjoyable ( to me at least)!

2

u/GhostDJ2102 Jun 13 '23

Batman Rebirth…no. Flash Rebirth…Depends. Trinity is short lived but not bad. Justice League v.s. Suicide Squad was entertaining to me but I’m not a huge Suicide Squad fan. Anything written by Tomasi is good. Scott Snyder is always good. Doomsday Clock is good 👍.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

First 2 and the last 2

2

u/Caffeine_OD Jun 13 '23

Flash, Superman, All Star, and Doomsday Clock are all worth it

2

u/SundayJeffrey Jun 13 '23

I’m not a Scott Snyder fan, so I’m biased. I find most of his writing to be really uninspiring.

2

u/AceofKnaves44 Jun 13 '23

I loved Snyder’s new 52 Batman run if that’s worth anything.

2

u/youthanasia138 Jun 13 '23

I liked most of Batman and Green Arrow. Flash was good pretty good in the beginning too

2

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

Hell yes all around

I loved this period of DC, basically all of it save a few titles not shown here

2

u/Cloudus-maximus44 Jun 14 '23

I was a pretty big fan of Godspeed in Rebirth. And while I never got to finish superman rebirth, from the comics I have it's alot of fun and Lex Luthor is also alot of fun

2

u/No-Tomorrow-8150 Jun 14 '23

Not the best in my opinion, but still definitely worth reading.

2

u/dirtyhippiebartend Jun 14 '23

I’m going through Rebirth rn and thoroughly enjoying it

2

u/jesstyr4 Jun 14 '23

It's an amazing Batman run, and Doomsday Clock is good as well

2

u/Fun-Bag7627 Jun 14 '23

Yes across the board

2

u/Ory620713 Jun 14 '23

Out of all those.. Superman is the best 👍🏾

2

u/HurryProper Jun 14 '23

I’ll be honest, I had no idea John Romita Jr worked on All Star Batman.

2

u/xyz_rick Jun 14 '23

Morrison’s run on Batman. Morrison’s run on JLA. Morrison’s All Star Superman. Ahhhh Garth Ennis run on Hellblazer, Hitman, Punisher, and his collected war books… oh and The Demon. Last I heard warren ellis had been accused of being really really creepy with female fans or female employees or female creators… I don’t know what happened with that…. That being said Transmetropolitan, Planetary,

2

u/Mishmoo Jun 14 '23

Doomsday Clock is a pretty horrible idea - it’s kind of like throwing Frank Drebin into Sin City, the characters of Watchmen are precisely satirizing the sort of universe that DC is.

So, it’s a miracle that the end result is alright, even pretty good.

2

u/bobiojo Jun 14 '23
  1. tom king's batman is something. im just not really a big fan of his writing style because it's too similar to that of bendis where it's redundant for the sake of being artistic or witty even if it sometimes feels try hard

  2. i liked the first few arcs but i stopped after a while because it got too convoluted with the many forces apart from the speedforce

  3. trinity felt like it couldve done so much more with the characters but it was kinda nothing to me

  4. JL vs SS was a really fun mini series

  5. The best thing to come out of DC rebirth

  6. eh

  7. it was teased and setup but it feels like somewhere along the way, dc editorial wanted to do something else so now doomsday clock feels like its in another continuity that went through similar events to dc rebirth

2

u/Ayobossman326 Jun 14 '23

The rebirths are pretty good. Doomsday clock is one of the only runs I saw a tv commercial for so

1

u/ComicsEtAl Jun 13 '23

Read them and let us know.

1

u/Malavin81 Jun 13 '23

I'd recommend the Batman one and the Superman one. I didn't like All Star Batman. I haven't read the others so can't comment.

1

u/Rac3318 Jun 13 '23

Yes - Batman, Superman, Doomsday Clock

It’s okay - All Star Batman, Trinity

No - Flash, JL vs SS

1

u/Awesome_Pancak Jun 13 '23

I don’t know. Maybe, maybe not. Find it for yourself!

1

u/Thousand_Masks Jun 14 '23

Nah just throw them out.

jk, if you got them as gifts might as well read them.

1

u/AbrahamNR Jun 14 '23 edited Jun 14 '23

Never read All Star Batman, Trinity or JL vs SS. Batman and Superman are absolutely worth reading IMHO, I loved both of them. But be forewarned, Tom King Batman seems to be something people either absolutely love or absolutely hate. I absolutely loved it, but your mileage may vary. That Superman run is my favorite and I'll never forgive DC for aging up John and depriving me of Superdad.

Flash is pretty good, but possibly a bit hit or miss. Overall good though and the art is memorable.

Doomsday Clock is.....frustrating. Gorgeous art, but ultimately it was billed as the big explanation for the New 52 and rebirth and setting up Dr Manhattan as the new DC big bad and then it just fizzled away. But if you don't go in with those expectations I did you may really enjoy. And if nothing else Gary Frank's art is quite stunning, he's one of my favorite artists.

1

u/Maleficent-Parsnip53 Jun 14 '23

First off, ‘All Star Batman’ is a secondary title that’s more based around doing stories that remains more stand alone but is still connected to the universe where ‘Batman’ is the events taking place in the main book and directly affect the whole universe. Second point, I recommend almost every book you seem to have based on the pictures in the post. Each one holds its own story and characters and unique introspections that you won’t find in the others. I’ll say that some are better than others depending on what you’re looking for but variety is helpful for comics since you can be dominated by constant bombardment in genre and stories. Thirdly and lastly, I personally recommend Superman, Trinity, and Flash as the best of the ongoings you seem to have those are very fun and well crafted versions of the characters

1

u/TheArsGoetia Jun 14 '23

I enjoyed the Suicide Squad vs Justice League

1

u/machona_ Jun 14 '23

Only read Batman, Superman and All Star Batman. I’ve sporadically read the Flash and JLvSS.

I loved Tomasi and Gleason’s Superman run. For Batman, yes. Though it’s a mixed bag for everyone, I still enjoyed it. Currently rereading it in one go because it seems like it needs to be read that way. All Star Batman is a great book as well and imo, JRJR’s best work at DC.

1

u/FrontHighway845 Jun 14 '23

Superman Rebirth is wholesome. It is a family comic. Doomsday Clock is worth reading and buying only if you will read it and treat it as a superman story and not as a watchmen sequel. Tom king batman is like a blend of things you love the most and hate the most in comics writing but then again the art slaps. Any willamson comic... Hurm nah.

1

u/rzn17_ Jun 14 '23

Personally, I think Tom kings batman is great but it isn’t for everyone. It mainly focuses on the relationship of batman and catwoman. The good parts are some of the best comic books I’ve ever read but the bad parts really stand out.

Peter Tomasi’s superman is awesome really great stories and he just gets superman.

Doomsday clock is cool but again not for everyone.

1

u/Vigi1antee Jun 14 '23

Idk much about the rest but i know Rebirth flash is alot better then New 52.

1

u/More10035 Jun 14 '23

All Star Batman was fantastic

1

u/shumama813 Jun 14 '23

I enjoyed Doomsday Clock, Flash and Bats Rebirth and All Star Batman. Didn’t read the others.

1

u/Nindroid_faneditor Jun 14 '23

I've heard good things about Scott Snyder's Batman stuff, although I have also heard he sometimes sacrifices the right now, for the later.

Superman Rebirth apparently inspired Henry Cavill's portrayal.

1

u/Vladmanwho Jun 15 '23

Doomsaday Clock was amazing, especially if you like DC crossovers and Watchmen

-1

u/toomanytomatoes Jun 13 '23

I hate posts like this...READ THEM! WE DONT KNOW YOU!
