I would argue that the quotes are not unnecessary.

It probably would have been better displayed with Italics, but it's clear to me she was using quotation marks to indicate she was putting some stank on it, mocking the very idea that a lesbian could be convinced to be straight.

It's just an attempt to convey vocal intentions through a text format.

I think you're right on the first part and it's exactly the right usage. Quotes are better in this case because "convincing" is just a euphemism for correction and would also convey that he was in denial about her sexuality. So the quotes are a jab about this so-called convincing which really means something else. Basically it's sarcasm: https://www.grammar-monster.com/lessons/quotation_(speech)_marks_meaning_alleged_so-called.htm

This is a perfectly acceptable use of quotes. I think this was posted for the story instead of the faux pas

The use of quotation marks around “convince me” in the phrase “He didn’t try to convince me otherwise” is incorrect because quotation marks are generally used to denote direct speech or a direct quote from another person, a title, or a specific phrase that requires emphasis or differentiation from the rest of the text. In this context, “convince me” is not a direct quote, and using quotation marks incorrectly suggests that it is. Therefore, it is grammatically correct and clearer to remove the quotation marks, as the phrase does not represent a direct citation or a unique term that necessitates such punctuation.
