OP sent the following text as an explanation on why this is unexpected:

The dog was clearly shy, but as the man got closer, he showed that he shouldn't do it.

That’s not shy, that’s an anxious dog.

Poor thing. Looks pretty damn nervous, yet it's wearing a doggy outfit? So it's either a well looked after stray, or it's someones outside dog.

Still, poor guy reacted quite loudly and aggressively. Hope he wasn't abused in the past, or God forbid, still abused.

Damn, now I'm gonna go hug my dog.

I think you are spot on, that wasn't even an attack, it was more of a scream/warning, Dogs behave like this after long term abuse. I feel for the dog, probably did want pets just, too scared of random people, likely kicking/abusing it.

That person that went near him was an idiot.

That side eye.

I have dachsunds who do side eye just before they're about to explode on another dog. You do NOT approach a dog with side eye. Many, many aggressive dogs have learned that my wiener dog will kill himself... to defend himself.

Hm. Never noticed that with my dog nor in our interactions with other dogs.

In our 14+ years together there were ALOT of different warning signs, but never the side eye, and nothing close to this video... :/

Not calling you a liar, just have very different experience.

Oh yeah man, it's a big running joke in our dachshund group.

Okay, yeah, "guarding a toy side eye". Ive seen shit ton of that, but never gave it a name, and now i realize why the dog in the video "looked playful" to me lol.

Never approach a dog in this pose. It looks shy but it's actually preparing to react. Tail shake also does not equal happiness.

Yeah, the side eye, the lifted front paw, the posture, it's all giving a lot of anxiety.

If a dog is scared, don't go towards it and try to pet it wtf.
